The NIKKOR brand
As the brand name for Nikon lenses, NIKKOR has become synonymous with high-performance, high-quality SLR lenses. The NIKKOR name comes from adding “R”—a common practice in the naming of photographic lenses at the time the name was established—to “Nikko”, the Romanized abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku K.K. In 1933, the large-format lens for aerial photography was released with the name Aero-Nikkor.
NIKKOR has always been ahead of the times. The OP Fisheye-Nikkor 10mm f/5.6 fisheye lens for SLR cameras, released in 1968, was the world’s first lens to incorporate aspherical lens elements. What’s more, NIKKOR lenses for the latest SLR cameras utilize a number of Nikon’s own cutting-edge technologies, including Nano Crystal Coat, which virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths.
The current lineup of more than sixty NIKKOR lenses for Nikon SLR cameras offers a rich variety of lenses, including fisheye lenses, super wide-angle to super telephoto lenses, micro lenses and PC-E lenses.

Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lens cameras that propose new forms of imaging expression and enjoyment
TOKYO-Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the first two models in the new Nikon 1 series, the J1 and V1. Nikon 1 is an advanced interchangeable lens that proposes new forms of imaging expression with a new super high-speed AF CMOS image sensor, the new high-speed image-processing engine, EXPEED 3, and the new Nikon 1 mount lens system.
Development Background
As a manufacturer of optical devices, Nikon has long developed products equipped with innovative new features based on technologies originally cultivated decades ago for film cameras. The many cameras released by Nikon over the years have continuously expanded photographic possibilities. Even with the nearly complete transition to digital that we see today, Nikon has continued to expand its lineups of compact digital cameras and digital-SLR cameras. Nikon’s COOLPIX-series cameras are user friendly compact digital cameras, while the D-series line of digital-SLR cameras supports the needs of an incredibly wide variety of photographer, from the beginner to the professional. Nikon will celebrate its 95th anniversary next year, and is extremely proud of its record of having utilized its optical technologies in the development of many innovative products over nearly a century. So that we may continue our role as a leading company in the imaging industry in this age when digital technologies have become so common, Nikon looks forward to proposing new forms of imaging enjoyment and value over the next century as well. The first step in this process has been the development of a new type of camera that creates new imaging possibilities never before considered with conventional compact digital cameras or digital-SLR cameras.
Nikon 1 J1 / V1 Primary Features
- The world’s smallest and lightest*1 interchangeable lens digital cameras that propose new forms of imaging expressionFaster image processing and superior reproduction characteristics have been achieved for both still images and movies through the combination of the CMOS image sensor and image-processing engine, both developed by Nikon. The cameras are also equipped with Nikon’s newest lens mount system. Despite the new lens mount, the mount adapter enables the use of existing F-mount NIKKOR lenses*2 with the J1 and V1, for excellent compatibility with equipment users may already own.
- Nikon 1 mount, Nikon’s new compact, high-performance lens mount systemThe Nikon 1 mount is the new lens mount system developed for compatibility with Nikon’s new imaging format. The new mount not only supports the dedicated 1 NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6, 1 NIKKOR VR 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6, 1 NIKKOR 10mm f/2.8 and 1 NIKKOR VR 10-100mm f/4.5-5.6 PD-ZOOM Nikon 1-mount interchangeable lenses, but also F-mount NIKKOR lenses*2, manufactured by Nikon for more than half a century, when the new FT1 mount adapter is used. This enables users to enjoy tremendous variety in their imaging expression with the ability to choose the lens best suited to the scene, subject, or their own creative intent from a broad lineup of standard and special-purpose lenses.
- The world’s first*3 cameras to be equipped with a new super high-speed AF CMOS image sensor and offer focal plane phase detection AFThe new super high-speed AF CMOS sensor is a Nikon CX-format CMOS image sensor. - New EXPEED 3 image processing engineThe cameras are equipped with Nikon’s latest image-processing engine, EXPEED 3, which is based on EXPEED, Nikon’s exclusive comprehensive image-processing concept, and optimized for the Nikon 1 system for increased speed and performance.
- Simple operation with compact and lightweight bodies that make them perfect for everyday useThe J1 and V1 are compact and lightweight cameras that you can keep with you at all times, making them perfect not only for vacations and special events, but also for quick and easy capture of everyday scenes or unexpected episodes.
You can easily record photos or movies with four shooting modes (Motion Snapshot, Smart Photo Selector, Still image, Movie). - A new advanced hybrid autofocus system that enables the world’s fastest autofocusing*1 with the world’s most focus points*2The advanced hybrid autofocus system combines phase detection AF, which enables faster focusing and superior subject tracking performance with moving subjects, with contrast-detect AF, which performs well in low-light conditions. This hybrid system ensures optimal focusing under a variety of shooting conditions.
As the world’s first*1 interchangeable lens cameras to implement focal plane phase detection AF, the J1 and V1 have achieved the high-speed autofocusing needed for certain capture of even the most unexpected photo opportunities. This enables certain capture of the perfect photo opportunities when shooting moving subjects and subjects such as children and pets whose movement is very difficult to predict.
What’s more, at 10 fps, the cameras also offer the world’s fastest continuous shooting rate*3 with AF tracking, and the world’s fastest high-speed continuous shooting rate*4 of 60 fps.
The J1 and V1 also boast the most focus points*2—73 with phase detection AF—available with any interchangeable lens digital camera currently available.- *1Among interchangeable lens digital cameras available as of September 21, 2011. - *4The maximum number of shots per burst is 30 with the V1 and 12 with the J1. Maximum shooting rate when focus is locked with the first shot in a burst. Results based on Nikon test conditions as of September 21, 2011. (Based on Nikon research.)
- Motion Snapshot, imaging function that combines full-HD movie with a still image for more dramatic imaging expressionIn Motion Snapshot mode, simply pressing the shutter-release button records a still image and about a second of high-resolution movie footage beginning before and ending after the time the shutter-release button was pressed. Movies recorded in Motion Snapshot mode are played back in slow motion. With slow-motion playback at 0.4x normal playback speed of the movie and a still image, Motion Snapshot allows users to express impressive moments that show slight changes in expression, the rustling of tree leaves, or fluctuations in nature.Shooting/recording: Choose one of four themes (Beauty, Waves, Relaxation, Tenderness) prior to shooting. When the shutter-release button is pressed halfway, the camera begins recording movie footage to the memory buffer. When the shutter-release button is pressed the rest of the way down, a still image, along with about a second of movie footage beginning before and ending after the time the shutter-release button was pressed, are recorded to the memory card.Playback: After approximately 2.5 seconds of movie footage recorded in Motion Snapshot is played back in slow motion, the still image is displayed. Total movie/still image display lasts for 10 seconds, during which time the background music for the selected theme is played. The movie file and still image file recorded each time the shutter-release button is pressed in Motion Snapshot mode are stored as a set on the memory card. This fun new feature enables a new form of imaging expression that combines both still images and movie footage using conventional shooting operations.
- Smart Photo Selector for simple capture of the best shotWhen the shutter-release button is pressed halfway in Smart Photo Selector mode, the camera focuses and begins buffering images. When the shutter-release button is then pressed the rest of the way down, the camera compares shots recorded to the buffer both before and after the shutter-release button was pressed, and automatically selects five to record to the memory card. It also eliminates the need for capturing a large volume of shots with continuous shooting and the troublesome process of later manually selecting the best shot from a series.Shooting/recording:Rotate the mode dial to Smart Photo Selector mode. When the shutter-release button is pressed halfway, the camera focuses and begins recording images to the buffer memory. Up to 20 images can be saved in the buffer memory each time the shutter-release button is pressed (some before the shutter-release button is pressed, some after). Of the 20 buffered images, the camera automatically records the single best shot based on movement and composition, as well as four additional candidate images to the memory card.Playback: Users can choose a different “best shot” than that selected by the camera from the candidate images, and also delete unnecessary images.
- A simple, high-quality designThe concepts of simple, streamlined, fashionable and high-quality were adopted for design of both the Nikon 1 J1 and V1. The only decoration on these flat, smooth cameras is the Nikon 1 brand name and the J1 or V1 model name on the front of the cameras. Positioning of a rear grip ensures a firm hold on the camera without sacrificing its simple, flat shape.
What’s more, lenses are available in the same colors as the cameras* for an integrated appearance. The graphical user interface (GUI) adopted for monitor display is structured to be as simple and streamlined as the cameras themselves. Superfluous menus have been eliminated for an intuitive, easy-to-understand GUI design. - *Kit lenses only.
- Air-gapless structure adopted for LCD monitor with wide viewing angleThe J1 is equipped with a 3.0-inch, approximately 460k-dot TFT LCD monitor with wide-viewing angle, and the V1 offers a 3.0-inch, approximately 921k-dot TFT LCD monitor with wide-viewing angle. The monitors built into both cameras utilize an air-gapless structure with which the protective glass and LCD panel are integrated for a thinner design and increased visibility outdoors, enabling users to enjoy more beautiful display of their photos and movies.
- Short Movie Creator automatic movie editing software that is easy to use and can be launched independentlyThe Short Movie Creator software bundled with the cameras is an automatic movie editing application that is fun to use with still images and movies recorded with Nikon 1 cameras. It can be used to easily create original short movies with imaging effects (styles) and background music. Short movies created with Short Movie Creator can be saved to a memory card for viewing on the camera, or uploaded to online movie sharing sites such as YouTubeTM. In addition, collaboration with Nikon’s image transfer, browsing, editing and sharing software, ViewNX 2, enables easy organization and editing of still images and movies.
- Short Movie Creator Primary Features
- Easily create original short movies from still images and movies by simply selecting an imaging effect (style) and music. With a maximum playback time of 30 minutes, three options are available: Summarize to fit to music, Use all images and movies, Summarize to manual length.
- Priority can be placed on the two seconds before and after a specific portion by simply selecting a “best scene”. A single movie file can be registered more than once for specification of additional best scenes.
- Music files can also be edited so that only a specific portion is used.
- The frame size and frame rate of short movies can be selected to suit the manner in which they will be used. Short movies can be saved to memory cards in a format that makes it possible to view them with the cameras.
- Titles and credits can be added to movie files.*

- Short Movie Creator Primary Features
- Bright, high-contrast electronic viewfinder with a resolution of approximately 1440k-dot (V1 only)The V1 is equipped with a bright, high-contrast electronic viewfinder (EVF) with a resolution of approximately 1440k-dot (SVGA). It is extremely clear with a frame coverage of approximately 100%, and utilizes a color filter system that prevents color breakup that appears as a rainbow artifact due to the interaction between subject movement and the photographer’s eye, for faithful display of moving subjects.
-
Additional Features and Functions

The new Nikon 1 brand of cameras falls into a category that Nikon calls “a Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lens”. Among the many meanings included in this name is the implication of the creation of a new range of possibilities that is not available with current imaging culture through differences in camera mechanisms and form that exclude them from existing camera categories.
The first step in this process will be the development and expansion of Nikon 1 cameras, a new type of camera that creates new imaging possibilities never before considered with conventional compact digital cameras or digital-SLR cameras.

The Best Nikon DSLR Lenses That I Will Personally Pick.
Posted by Singapore Media Owners in Brand: Nikon, Photography Articles & Videos on March 21, 2011
OK, by now you have build up a little collection of lenses. This series of articles are about the Best Lenses that I will personally pick from each brand and this is NO ”buying guide” or a technical review of each lenses. You can find those all over the internet. However, I am sharing based on personal experience, usability and how well it compliment your work.
My Pick for Best Nikon Zoom lens (General Lens).
This is the lens that I will probably bring it everywhere I go, for commercial shoot or leisure walkabouts.
I will take the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR anytime. It’s a 5xZoom equivalent at a constant user-friendly apeture at F4 throughout the zoom range, and it runs on Nikon’s sweet Silent Wave Motor (SWM). Though not exactly a light lens at 710gm, but it is certainly worth the weight if you only can bring ONE lens with you. From wide angle to medium telephoto, this is also the focal range that most commercial photographers & journalists loved! This wonder lens covers almost all the range that these photographers required. The Vibration Reduction (VR) function just complete the package for the ultimate “walkabout working lens”. The lens build is solid (as expected from Nikon) and the handling is good. Price wise, I will say it is value for money!
Some Quick Information:
AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR
Format: FX (Full Frame) but can be used on cropped bodies with a corresponding 1.5X increase.
Focal Range: Wide Angle to Medium Telephoto 24mm-120mm or 36mm-180mm on DX Bodies.
Filter Diameter: 77mm
Supplied with Box: Instruction, Lens Pouch & Lens Hood HB-53.
Suggested Alternative Lens for DX Bodies: AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED
My Pick for Best Nikon Telephoto Zoom lens (Telephoto Lens).
This is the lens that I will use for portraiture work, short range wildlife shots & street photography.

My pick, the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II. This is a MUST GET Nikkor. Probably Nikon’s best lens ever. This lens incorporated the “best of know-hows” from years of experience in lens design and manufacturing. Using superb quality material for the lens body, the lens elements matched up with an optical design that uses 7 ED glass! Yes 7! If that is not enough, it’s good to know that Nikon swear by their Nano Crystal Coat on their glass, an ultra fast Silent Wave Motor (SWM) that gives ridiculously accurate focusing, plus a Vibration Reduction (VR) unit, now in its 2nd incarnation at “VRII”, a constant 9 blades apeture of F2.8 throughout the zoom range that give smooth and soft bokeh, this is every Nikon Fan Boys’ Dream lens!
Some Quick Information:
AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II
Format: FX (Full Frame) but can be used on cropped bodies with a corresponding 1.5X increase.
Focal Range: Medium Telephoto to Super Telephoto 70mm-200mm or 105mm-300mm on DX Bodies.
Filter Diameter: 77mm
Supplied with Box: Instruction, Tripod Mount, Lens Pouch & Lens Hood HB-48.
Suggested Alternative Lens for DX Bodies: AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR
My Pick for Best Nikon Standard lens (Prime Lens).
This is the lens that I will use for a wide variety of applications when zooming is not everything.

Some Quick Information:
Nikkor AF 35mm f/2D
Format: FX (Full Frame) but can be used on cropped bodies with a corresponding 1.5X increase.
Focal Range: Standard 35mm wide angle or 52.5mm on DX Bodies.
Filter Diameter: 52mm
Supplied with Box: Instruction.
Suggested Alternative Lens for DX Bodies: AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G
The above 3 Nikkor (Nikon) lenses are the lenses that I will personally pick if I have to choose just 3 lenses to buy for a Nikon system. The combination above is not your buying guide, but what I think is best to have in your camera bag. Nikon is famed for their meticulous details into making their lenses. The arrangement of switches, the shape & design, the “feel” when using it, and the touch of the focus/zoom rings surely puts Nikon/ Nikkor lenses among the bests.

Canon & Nikon – How To Kill Sony
Posted by Singapore Media Owners in Brand: Canon, Brand: Nikon, Brand: Sony, Photography Articles & Videos on January 5, 2011
Sony wowed the world again recently with the release of their SLT A-33 & SLT A-55. Sitting in the Alpha DSLR line, these 2 cameras are like no other. Cheap, Light weight, Compact & packed with good specs. Some of you not familiar with Sony Alpha might get a shock when you look at the specs from these 2 hybrids. The Frames Per Second (FPS) itself already fascinates me, the SLT A-33 gets a 7 fps while the turbocharged SLT A-55 gets a whopping 10 fps! Do read up more on these 2 cameras on Sony’s site if you are keen to find out more.
Now, back to the story and over to the Canon & Nikon Camp. Market speculations had suggested that the 2 big boys of DSLR may be up to something up their sleeves having seen Sony’s success on these “hybrid” entry-level cameras. After reading up on many sites and rumour-sites, I gathered some speculated specs for the fun of it and who knows, it might be just what we are going to expect soon.
Line Up -
I reckon Canon’s version will be along the Rebel/Kiss/T/XXXD line while Nikon may have it on a new number system but still along the line of the older DXX series.
Megapixel -
Should be around the range of 15.1-18mp
ISO Sensitivity -
Should be around 80-12,800 if not, expandable to 25,600.
Frames Per Second -
Between 9-12 fps.
Focusing & Metering -
Expect 21 AF Points with 19 virtual points and maybe 64 zone metering. Maybe they will even throw in fast focus detection (think auto face focus) like in-camera panning too. In short, it’s like “Super Al Focus” in Canon’s language.
Customs Functions -
Canon & Nikon are very good at this. Maybe they will throw in 60+ Useless Customs Functions or more! Please bear in mind, if you can adjust the LCD screen brightness – that is considered One Custom Functions – lolz.
Price -
Canon & Nikon are pretty good at this too. Purposely priced and sell it lower than what Sony is offering on a model-to-model basis. Even a SGD$100 lower price point will hit Sony badly. (Knowing “Price-sensitive” & “Brand Concious” Singaporeans.)
I shall stop here. Like many who suggested, Canon & Nikon may just push out a lower spec-ed mini “1D /D3″ in a light package (and probably cute), small size & cheap camera out before they loses their biggest market share here(Consumer/ Beginners) to *Sony.
Let’s wait and see what Canon & Nikon will roll out next. They fight, We Watch.
As consumers, we will be the ultimate winner.
Background
*Sony has always pulls off stunts like releasing a few entry-levels models at the same time while the compeition usually releases 1 or 2, but segmented to different categories of users.
Sony shocked the world last year when they release A230, A330, A380, A550 (Sony claims A5XX series as “mid-range” but it is advanced beginner for those who knew) all at about the same time. Basically all are entry level DSLRs but priced according to specs – more specs, more expensive and at about the same time, Canon had a mid-life EOS500D & a fairly new EOS1000D and Nikon was soldiering on D5000 and pending release of D3000.
2010 saw the release of A290, A390, A33 & A55 at almost the same time again – it is almost like pulling off the same stunt all over again but with more substance this time with the A33 & A55.

Canon 1D Mark IV vs Nikon D3s (From DigitalRev TV)
Posted by Singapore Media Owners in Brand: Canon, Brand: Nikon, Group Test & Reviews, Photography Articles & Videos on October 26, 2010
Hmmmmm…. really strange. Shouldn’t the Nikon D3s be compared to the upcoming un-launched Canon 1Ds Mark IV?
Well that’s my view as it will be more fair if Full Frame can be compared to another Full Frame. (Nikon D3s is Full Framed while the Canon 1D Mark IV is Cropped Framed)
Anyway, here’s the video and the model are acceptable for entertainment…
The Battle of 18-55mm
Posted by Singapore Media Owners in Brand: Canon, Brand: Nikon, Brand: Sony, Group Test & Reviews, Photography Articles & Videos on September 3, 2010
When fully extended to 55mm (zoomed), I noticed that the Sony & Canon’s units extended the most while the Nikkor’s physical zoom ratio is slightly less than Canon. Sony has the longest zoom here. At fully zoomed, Nikkor’s unit is still the tallest here. Another interesting find, at the fully zoomed position, the Nikkor’s extended portion are very filmsy to the touch while Canon & Sony’s units are much more refined in this area. On the design wise, Canon has the most “Professional” layout while Sony adopted the “No-Frills” and minimalistic design – carried over from the Konica-Minolta legacy. And while Nikon & Canon added the chromed-color silver ring near the zoom ring to give the “Pro” look, Sony retains its matted silver ring, also another trace from the predecessor. The Sony unit probably has the worst rear lens cap here (above).
Canon’s lens designers gave priority to the cosmetics rather the material used. Canon’s kit lens was “Very Professional Looking”, but sadly, “Toy-like” when handled. The buttons layout are nice, but not really friendly to use. Try shooting then use your left hand fingers and try to fumble with the switch, you will find that somehow the “touch” is not there and something is not really right here. But back to the looks department, Canon beats Nikon and Sony hands down in this area.
Picture: Nikon Nikkor AF-S DX 18-55mm F3.5-5.6G VR
Nikon is clearly the winner on ease-of-use here.
A kit lens may be the cheapest consumer-grade lens the manufacturer made to package with DSLRs, to sell their DSLRs. But being the lowest form of life on the lens range does not mean having to perform badly too. Read the individual reviews you will realize each of these lenses has their great characteristics.
For me, a lens must perform well, handles well and produce reasonabley average-quality photos. Not a lens with nice design or professionally crafted.
My pick for the overall Winner is Nikon Nikkor AF-S DX 18-55mm F3.5-5.6G VR!

Nikon Nikkor AF-S DX VR 55-200mm F4.0-F5.6G IF-ED
Posted by Singapore Media Owners in Brand: Nikon on September 3, 2010

* Picture: (Nikon) Nikkor AF-S DX VR 55-200mm F4-5.6G IF-ED
Lens built quality was very well constructed for Nikkor’s version. The lens feels solid and purposeful. Ergonomics are well thought off with the buttons layout and the large (yes, super large) zoom ring. The weird part is, it has the same tiny focus ring (like the 18-55mm) right at the front just behind the front lens elements. This is quite stupid in my view, but once getting used to it, I can live with it. The focus ring feels a little plasticky to touch and use, but it works. (Of course). The VR feature is well appreciated, though a very basic version, it works down to 2 stops when I tested it. (Nikon claims 4 stops – like every other brands)
Among Nikon, Canon, Tamron & Sigma being the most talked-about 55-200mm lenses at that time, Nikon & Sigma emerged as the winners for the better built quality, better design and excellent image quality. Nikon incorporated their proprietory Silent Wave Motor (SWM) while Sigma added their Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) for super fast focusing and near-silent operation. Canon has their Ultrasonic Motor (USM) in place, however, users had complained about the noisy operation and average focusing speed. Apart from these negatives noted, image quality is excellent. Tamron probably lost due to its lens built quality. Tamron’s version looks sophisticated (at that point of time – go Google for it), but feels like a toy when handled. "Filmsy" was the best description I can think of. I almost thought I was holding some SLR Lens when I played with a fellow photographer’s unit. Image quality from the Tamron is average.
On InfraRed Photography (IR), Nikkor AF-S DX VR 55-200mm F4.0-F5.6G IF-ED is really at home. I’ve gotten super sharp IR photos using this lens with ZERO hotspots at all focal range and apeture stops. Not sure if it is just me, I also noticed the IR Colors from this lens is better than the AF-S DX 18-55mm. Please let me know if you feel the same. The focal range of this lens is also great for portraits, be it IR or normal photos, DX 55mm (83mm after corresponding increase x1.5 for DX) makes it a very good and cheap portrait lens. This is like the super-budget Nikkor 70-200mm or 85mm for FX (Full Frame Bodies). If you own a DX, get this lens.
(If you are looking for the specs, please google yourself, it’s all over the internet.)
- Filter Size 52mm
- Lens Hood HB-37 (Sold separately).
- AF Runs on Fast & Silent Wave Motor (SWM).
- Focal Range when used on Nikon bodies with smaller APS-C sensors – 82.8-300mm.
- Nikon DX Mount is designed for use on Nikon’s Cropped Bodies (with corresponding increase x1.5 APS-C)
- Designed & Built to pair with the AF-S DX 18-55mm Kit lens.
What I Like:
- Good Portrait to Medium Telephoto range when used on my D60 & D70-IR.
- Super Cheap.
- Tough & Solid Built.
- Larger than Sony or Canon’s equivalent.
- Good picture quality from a Cheap Zoom Lens.
- SWM provides a quiet and fast focusing.
- VC works well. (on the test unit)
- Nice Zoom Ring – good to touch & use.
- Plastic Construction.
- Weird Design again (Big Body small head).
- Hood not included in package.

Nikon Nikkor AF-S DX 18-55mm F3.5-5.6G VR
Posted by Singapore Media Owners in Brand: Nikon on August 31, 2010
Launched since 2007, this Nikkor had soldier on for a couple of generations for entry level Nikon DSLRs. Made and designed for the mass consumer market, this lens is cheap to produce and priced to compete with other kit lenses from other brand’s similar offerings. Seating at the lowest hierachy of Nikkor, this lens is not the worse performer though. (I used to be on Nikon System in the yesteryears) Color photos turned out in refreshing colors (on D60) and nicely saturated while the contrast can be a little soft. This is easily corrected during post production so I can live with that.

* Picture: (Nikon) Nikkor AF-S DX 18-55mm F3.5-5.6G VR
Lens built is average. Featuring a full plastic construction like the competition, the lens feels a little filmsy (but the 55-200mm is good!) and the design is somewhat dated. Placed it side by side with the Sony’s 18-55mm & Canon’s 18-55mm, you will find that the Sony’s Kit Lens has the best design, Canon’s Kit Lens has a more solid built while the Nikkor is the largest among the trio, it looks slightly out of place. But I am glad to report that, the picture quality from this Nikkor lens is as good as Sony’s unit surpassing the Canon’s unit. Like the competition (Canon’s Image Stabilizer or IS), this kit lens is equipped with Vibration Control (VC), *Sony’s SteadyShot (SS) is built into the DSLR Body, while Nikon & Canon built their "virtual tripods" into the lens body.
On InfraRed, this lens performed well on the D70-IR (Modded with a Hoya R72 Filter) with no hotpotting on all F Stops. But the photos can turned out soft at 18mm & 24mm Focal stops. Photo starts to get razor sharp from 35mm all the way to 55mm. I will rate this lens (for IR Photography) a 7/10 conservatively.

What I Like:

- Super Cheap.
- Tough Built.
- Larger than Sony or Canon’s equivalent.
- Good picture quality from a Cheap Kit Lens.

Nikon D70 vs Canon 400D (DigitalRev)
Posted by Singapore Media Owners in Photography Articles & Videos on August 28, 2010
This is Part 2. The 2 abused cameras are taken through a shoot test and apparently despite the treatment rendered, both still works.
However, towards the end of the clip, Canon customer service was put to the "test". Sadly, Canon demanded a "Inspection Fees" to determine the repairs required for the spoilt 400D. Maybe what the industry says about Nikon’s customer service is true after all.
