Caption: Home is where the heart is. This picture shows the living room and kitchen of my childhood home. Nothing tastes better than food prepared by my mother at home. My Father always has a bottle of wine or champagne standing by somewhere to celebrate happy occasions.

Caption: My father probably never knew about IKEA when I was a kid. He was the IKEA man! Need a bamboo pole rack? Create it. Need a towel hanger? Create it. Can’t doubt his words. Afterall, he did create a genius and that is me! Hahaha…

Caption: This building at Short Street was the tallest primary school with ten storeys back in the 1980s. Selegie Primary School was the only one with a lift back then. Unfortunately, it shut down when I was in Primary 3. Nonetheless, it still maintains a cool exterior vibe to date!

Caption: This was the soccer field whereby I used to run around and play catching during my primary school years. It was also the place whereby I was being punished at times for being naughty. It is currently the compound of a hip student hostel.

Caption: This is the corridor outside my childhood flat where I grew up in. I actually managed to learn how to ride a bicycle at this narrow corridor. Looking back, I certainly have a lot of fun playing catching, hide and seek and hopscotch in this tiny space.

Caption: This was the provision store at Selegie House whereby I would nag my mother to buy me chocolates, sweets and plastic aeroplanes when I was a kid. My mum really doted on me back then and would often defy my Dad, the thrifty good man.

Caption: Many times, I had wanted to renovate my father’s kitchen for him. He had always turned me down and deemed it unnecessary. In my father words “It is not dirty, just very old.” Nonetheless, many culinary wonders have been created by my parents at this very old space.

Caption: The intricate wiring system and circuit breaker switches in the living room seem to represent the connection of my family. There are various divisions but all linked together somehow in one way or another. And if one should somehow falter or breakdown, the rest will be affected too.

Caption: This set of jade bangle and ring belonged to my grandmother. My father had kept it with him upon her passing 20 years ago. My memories of her were vague yet fond. My dad would bring me along to visit her on a weekly basis during her living years.

Caption: My father showed this unique looking chain to me on a hot afternoon. This was a pure silver chain belt belonging to my grandfather. There was a period whereby the family were under financial difficulties and my grandfather was forced to pawn this. It was redeemed back eventually.

Caption: Life is tough, that makes me treasure beautiful and meaningful things even more. Every time I passed by the Mica building, looking at the colourful windows, I feel as if they were talking to me, listening to me and smiling at me. And that helps cheer my day up.

Caption: The Beaulieu House located in Sembawang Park is one building that have witnessed Singapore’s transformation from a small fishing village to a 1st World cosmopolitan city. Built in 1910 as a seaside house by a mining family, it was acquired by the British as housing for Naval Officers, later as seafood restaurant from 1980s till now. In the 80s 90s, I have experience real tasty seafood (chilli crab and steamy prawns) in the restaurant in kampong style. When I recently revisit the same building ( Restaurant was closed for renovation in 2000 and reopen in 2002 ), somehow the old kampong feeling is gone . Building is same but feeling is different.

Caption: The Queenstown Japanese Garden was a popular public gathering place in Queensway before it was destroyed by a fire in 1978. Now home to a popular McDonald’s outlet and called the Ridout Tea Garden, only a small portion of the original garden’s brick wall is preserved. Largely forgotten, it serves as a stark reminder of an era which once was.

Captions: Tanjong Pagar Railway Station was the place where some of my fondest childhood memories were built on. Indulging in delicious Malay cuisine such as Nasi Padang, Nasi Bryani and Lontong with my parents on a bi-weekly basis. Coming here back then could also mean an exciting holiday trip to Malaysia.

Caption: Passing by the Bukit Timah Truss Bridge on an almost weekly basis to my grandmother’s home had never ceased my marvel for the structure. Occasionally, I would catch sight of a train passing through the bridge from the public bus. I would always term these days as my lucky days.

Caption: The Queenstown Swimming Complex, opened in August 1970, was once the most popular swimming complex in Singapore largely due to the fact that it was the home of the Singapore Water Polo team which won a still-unrivalled 22 gold medals at the SouthEast Asian Games in the 70’s and 80’s. Even as attendance at the pools has fallen tremendously with the opening of newer pools all across the city-state, the Queenstown complex holds fond memories for countless residents.

Caption: My grandmother used to stay in Boon Lay area when I was a small kid. I could still remember these linkages to separate buildings were like forts where dreams were built for the ideal hide and seek place! I have had so much fun back then discovering hideaway corners.

Caption: This was the first stadium that I had been to. My brother brought me here when I was still in Primary School. I would run to the middle of the pitch and imagine myself as a singing superstar to soak in the bright lights reminiscent of a concert arena.

Caption: These gates at Everton Park remind me of the ones on my grandmother’s house. I loved pulling these gates, opening and retracting despite her incessant nagging. Until one day, my fingers were snapped. Despite the painful experience, I still look back with nostalgic memories whenever I caught sight of them.

Caption: The lady in the depicted wall art bears a strong resemblance to my grandmother. She wore the same style of attire and similar scrubbing washboard used. I miss her cooking. Steamed egg with minced meat and Ang Ku Kueh. The special taste just can’t be found or replicated anymore sadly.

Caption: I am very thankful to be living in Singapore. The bold mix of colour on these different buildings, one old, the other modern depict the diversity of Singaporean population. I am glad that despite the progression, we have managed to retain that harmonious relationship regardless of race, language or religion.

Caption: These Ang Ku Kueh remind me of the ones that my grandmother used to make. I used to loathe them as a kid as they were made in abundance. However as I grew up, I realised the intricacies, effort and heart which went into making them. What a lovely sight!

Caption: As a seamtress, my mother brought me up with this trusty old sewing machine. It was her skillset and determination which put me through education all the way to University. As a grown-up now, I fully appreciate her efforts and hope to be an equally useful member to the society.

Caption: Henna Artist at Work – I captured the Henna artist at work at the Hari Raya Bazaar in Geylang Serai. Henna has been used as a decorative adornment on women’s bodies as part of social and holiday celebrations. What fascinated me were the intricate designs and patterns done freehand without referring to a pattern book.
