Caption: Sungei Road is where you go for used and bargain items. You may find some heritage items and gems which you cannot find else where. This senior photographer was seen selling his old photographs. A chat with him realised he was selling his award winning photographs of the past competitions. So ironic that I am submitting a picture of him selling his wares for another photo contest.

Caption: The empty morning after a busy night in the Jurong Fishery Port. This place really reflected how it was in the past since the 1970s when my grandfather worked here, after which he handed down the business to my dad, who is now retiring. The different colours of the boxes really saturates the dimly lit port.

Originally built for conference and exhibitions, today it is refurbished and modernized into a concert hall, home to the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. It was gazetted as a national monument in 2010. I remembered the place vividly as my NUS convocation was held there in 1985.

Caption: Life in Singapore is fast paced and busy. People are catching up with technology in a city where new buildings emerge every day. Beside the modern city look, these street arts help maintain the imaginary and creative side in each and everyone of us. I hope we will appreciate their existence. And the more modern we grow, the more Arts we need to balance out our development. As we are human, we do not only need the materialistic infrastructure, but our souls need to be nurtured and touched as well.

Caption: Day trip to Har Paw Villa – My Pa took my siblings to Har Paw Villa at Pasir Panjang. In those days, only cheapest transport was by bus. They sighted on the gruesome depictions of Chinese forklone’s 10 Courts of Hell. Things like if you used to tell lies, then when you were casted to hell with your tongue cut off! Kind of scary experience for them but nevertheless, they were happy to pose in the theme park. A day well spent and remembered!

Caption: Having played witness to numerous key events in Singapore’s history, City Hall is certainly dear to Singapore and every one of its people. First constructed as the Municipal Building by our colonial masters, it was where the Japanese surrendered to the British, marking the end of World War II. Full internal self-governance was also formally declared here, with the unveiling of the National Flag and playing of the National Anthem. Many National Day Parades, including the first, were also held at the Padang in front of it, with City Hall serving as the seating area for VIPs. Most recently, a $532 million makeover, done with input from the public, has thoughtfully weaved it with the Former Supreme Court next door, creating the new National Gallery. Perhaps it is also is a reflection of Singapore as a nation. We started out as an accidental nation. In our quest for survival, we have pursued economic success at the expense of other aspects of life, such as exploring our heritage and the arts. However in recent years, there have been growing opportunities for us to delve into our history, pursue our passions and have a say in national affairs. This is just like how City Hall may have been merely an imposing and distant administrative building in the past but with the opening of the National Gallery, it has become more appealing to the masses. I myself have visited the National Gallery numerous times with a camera in tow and spent hours exploring the treasures it holds since it opened its doors to the public. City Hall is our shared heritage, and one which we can now play a part in as we move forward towards SG100.

They have forgotten this legendary 328 katong laksa!!! Although I don’t stay very near to katong, I always travel down to eat there with my family & friends! Each time I go there to eat, I will always reminisce the past. I hope this photo will allow everyone to walk down into memory lane.

Caption: I still vividly remember my first Singapore river cruise ride 20 years ago. Back then, there were few buildings and sceneries were less colorful. Recently, I board on the cruise again and will say that I had a totally different experience. It is a real pleasure and eye-opening experience to be able to sit on the cruise and look at night seneries and skyscapers. Looking at how Singapore develop and progress over the years, i feel proud to be a Singaporean. Singapore river is the most iconic place in Singapore where is reflect the past and present of Singapore’s history. Hence, I decided to document the Singapore River Cruise and participate in this heritage competition with the photograph.

This geometrically but poetically designed block wall testifies architect’s imagination and his careful attention to the detail of the building. As for me(being the 1st daughter born after 4 brothers) got to sit on my Pa’s lap. It was a great day to have our family picture taken.

Caption: Old Tanjong Pagar Railway station, now a national monument of Singapore is one of my favorite places to go during Singapore holidays as it brings me back in time. The shortest and fastest way to reach my primary/secondary school back then by foot was through the railway station near our house in my hometown hence daily walk on the railway tracks is a must. Daily visit to railway station and walk on its tracks is truly an unforgettable part of my childhood that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Truly “A Walk To Remember”.
