A car garage and workshop still operate at an old classic building from the days when such buildings can be found more commonly across Singapore. Besides being famous for being venues for performing arts today, they used to be sites for various major monumental events in Singapore’s history. In 1954, People’s Action Party was officially launched there. Also, Singapore’s first television station was also kickstarted there in 1963. Today, this place houses many performing arts, with music and plays resonating within its walls, bringing people together, reminiscing the past.

My friend who has the passion for Teochew Opera for more than 40 year was acting as a bad eunuch in the picture. He and his fellow actors are mainly part-timers who shared the same passion; and some of them are grand-parents now. I am glad to see some young faces in the troupe and hope that this wonderful art/cultural heritage will pass down and preserve.

Caption: This photo was taken during a Xinyao performance at the Bras Basah Complex two year ago. The performance was part of an event for a Xinyao documentary “The Song We Sang” which has been released this year. Bras Basah Complex is the location where Xinyao performance was held frequently in the 80’s. The mainly Chinese songs were written and sang by the students then. Most of us who grew up in that era still love to attend Xinyao concerts as it brings back great memories of our time. I am glad to see the Xinyao artists are still very active and some schools are holding Xinyao singing competition in an effort to preserve the heritage.

Caption: A peddler and potential customer engaging in negotiation at Sungei Road’s Thieves Market. Soon to be a thing of the past, this historical place has since the 1930s, gathered both locals and foreigners alike. Through the years, peddlers have been trading many items, from fruits to electronics to even opium. If you search hard enough, you may find some hidden treasures, things that are old, but surely gold in terms of heritage. Sadly, Singapore’s original flea market is about to be taken away, paving way for an MRT station. Yet another one of our nation’s landmarks replaced by urbanisation.

Caption: “The Chequered Art ” – Rochor Centre is one of the most iconic heritage place that I have visited here in Singapore. The striking colours of its HDB flats and the heritage inside the centre is what drives tourist and photographers to really capture a photographic moment in it. However, beneath the mostly photographed colourful HDB flats of Rochor Centre lies a very interesting chequered floor in way of the centre lobby that always captures my attention every time i visit this place. An interesting pattern mostly ignored by people visiting this place.

Caption: “Cathay Building” – Location: 2 Handy Road – According to the history books, the Cathay Building, which was 16-storeys high, was the first and the tallest skyscraper in Southeast Asia during the 1930s. Through the years, the building was used for different purposes, especially during the World War II wherein it was converted as a Red Cross casualty station. Today, the building was redeveloped while preserving its original art-deco façade, which was gazetted as a national monument and is now known as “The Cathay”, housing retail outlets and 8 cinemas.

Caption: “The Old and the New” – Location: Singapore Central Business District – In this frame, 4 of the oldest buildings in the city can be seen in contrast with its modern skyline: (from L-R) The Fullerton Hotel commissioned in 1919, the Singapore Cricket Club built in 1884, the Old Parliament House which was completed in 1827, and the massive Old Supreme Court Building built between 1937-1939. As an architecture lover, this is my favorite view of the Singapore skyline because it is a testament to the government’s efforts of preserving its National Monuments, even during times of modernization.

Caption: “Rochor Centre” – Location: 1 Rochor Road – Known for its very colorful buildings of red, green, blue and yellow, Rochor Centre was built in 1977 and is one of the oldest residential blocks in Singapore. Sadly, it is scheduled to be demolished this September 2016 to make way for the construction of the North-South Expressway. For me, this spot has the best vantage point of Rochor Centre and I am glad that I was able to preserve it in a photo before it is long-gone.

Caption: “Former Lai Chun Yuen Theatre” – Location: 25 Trengganu Street – Located at 25 Trengganu Street in Chinatown, the 3-storey former theater building with cantilevering wooden balconies was built in 1887 and was designed in the style of a traditional Chinese teahouse. It was the center of entertainment in Kreta Ayer until it was badly damaged during World War II. Luckily for us, we are still able to see a remnant of Chinatown’s glory days as the building has been restored as a hotel with retail outlets.
