5th March 2014, Singapore – Lensy, is a new community marketplace for photography enthusiasts to feature and sell their images as stock photography to brands and businesses that need them.

Started by two ex-advertising agency planners, Vincent Teo and Ling Ang, Lensy was developed to help address the challenge of finding Asian photos from the traditional stock libraries, most of which were based in the U.S and Europe. At the same time, most current stock photography licenses are complicated and expensive for buyers with only a small percentage of revenue generated from each sale going back to the photographers.

“These were entrenched practices that were meant to benefit traditional stock libraries, not photographers. We wanted to find a way that could disrupt this outdated model and empower photographers by creating a fair and sustainable platform.” Vincent says.

With the lower cost of entry of cameras and better quality camera phones, there are more and more people in Asia who are interested in photography and who are good photographers themselves.

Lensy seeks to champion the photography enthusiast by giving an equal opportunity to anyone who has a passion for the craft to grow and develop as a photographer while making their photos available for sale to brands and businesses.

“There is an opportunity to democratize stock photography by offering photography enthusiasts the opportunity to earn money from their photos as well as offering businesses a wide range of affordable, high quality and royalty-free images that were free of complicated licenses for their web content such as websites and social media posts.” says Ling.

Lensy is based in Singapore but the site is open to serve a global audience with a specific focus on Asia. Anyone can sign up for free and upload his/her photos. All submitted photos will then be moderated by the team to ensure quality and appropriateness.

Under this model, all photos uploaded to Lensy are capped at 5MB are sold for $10 where half the amount sold ($5) goes to the photographer. The license gives buyers the non-exclusive right to use the photo royalty free across all mediums and over an indefinite period of time. And unlike other stock libraries, Lensy pays each photographer at the end of every month regardless of the sale amount due via Paypal.

Lensy also aims to make photography more social through Lensy Tasks where it allows businesses who require specific photos to crowdsource them from photographers via a “task”. Each task has a duration and reward attached. The winning photograph is selected at the end of the task to win the reward but all submissions that fit the theme will have the opportunity to be purchased by the brand; where each photo sale will earn the photographer $5.

Since we formed the group in March 2010, ourshutterjourney.com has grown beyond our imagination, and we felt that it will be better if our photography portal is backed by a registered company in Singapore. By doing soon, we hope to provide our members, friends, followers, students, associates & merchants a more comprehensive support for anything photography in Singapore & regionally.

It’s Our 4th Anniversary!

1st March 2014, Singapore – Today, ourshutterjourney.com celebrates its 4th Anniversary since the group was formed.
4 years is (indeed) a long time in the world of photography. We came together in March 2010 and decided to bring together photography enthusiasts purely for the common interest of photography. Since our first group event, we have done a total of over 300 photography shoots, 29 community & charity events, 40 commercially linked events, 16 photography talks, 6 photo trips and many other activities (in 4 years!). Looking back, we have really came a long way to where we are today.
Today the group has a total of 11,828 Followers across all our social media platforms from all over the world.

Evolving is an important factor to keep ourselves relevant and to be able to serve the needs of the members & friends who had sticked with us through these years. And we did. We had changed our logo twice to finally settling on the current 8 blade apertures with the group name in the centre in August 2011. Those of you who had been following us will know what the logo stands for,  We take the pleasure of posting our values once again below.

The 8 values above which we have faithfully followed had kept us going till today. Although the group had evolved further into a full service portal which we now provides other photography resources – had blended in well in a nice & subtle way. Backed by a network of accredited merchants, ourshutterjourney.com is by far the first independant photography group that has strong support by a few major camera brands and photography retailers. Members are now better supported in many ways from equipment purchase to photography courses to photography trips.

Like every other group or organisations, we do have our ups & downs. There were so many times that we almost wanted to close the group and move on to other interests – and we were glad that we didn’t. Every setbacks, every adverse incident, every difficult situation that had put us to the test, we had emerged stronger every time. Whenever we made someone smile, or shared a useful tip or trick with the event attendees, we felt that our objectives are being met in a really special way and that further helped & encouraged us in running the group with a sane mind. Trust us, it is really not easy.

As we continue on into another year, we are planning up more surprises and more interesting events for everyone to continue to hone their craft in a casual and community learning environment. We assure everyone that we will continue to work hard to better serve everyone’s needs as much as possible and within our means. We will continue to evolve the group and that is for sure.

Day February 2014, Singapore – Sigma’s latest release surprises the industry again. Since Sigma announced the Global vision, the company has been re-organizing their product lines and releasing new lenses after lenses and many of these new releases had even won multiple awards. So Sigma must be on the right track for that matter. Their latest Contemporary line lens – the Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM (C) came as a surprise to many photographers, industry watchers as well as the competition. As if the Sigma 24-105mm F4 (C) had not caused enough hypersonic waves with an outward open challenge to Canon’s 24-105mm F4L, the 2014 new 18-200mm is up against more than just Canon now, every brand with a 18-200mm is targeted.

Since the new 18-200mm is under the Contemporary (C) line of lenses, improvements are granted but what makes this lens another winner when put alongside with the competition? We are going to take a very close look and careful comparison among the few 18-200mm lenses that has “been around” for a while. While this site is not a technical site, today we will try to be slightly technical but casual at the same time. So bear with us if the technical details & comparisons bore you. If reading tech specs is not your cup of tea, just look at the photos. 🙂

OK, let’s first identify the similar lenses that are available in the market now.
1) Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM (C)
2) Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM
3) Tamron AF 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 Di II LD Asp. IF XR Macro
4) Nikon AF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 GII VR
5) Canon EF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS

For the easy reading of this article we shall name the above lenses to;

1) 2014 Sigma (C)
2) Sigma II
3) Tamron
4) Nikon
5) Canon

Age
Let’s start with their age. 2014 Sigma’s (C) version had just replaced its own 2012 Mark II version. This seems legit especially with the re-organizing of their product lines. However, slightly older are the versions from Canon & Nikon that were released in 2009. That is 5 years in human time and 20 years in photography technology time! And if that is not old enough, the oldest of the lot here has to be Tamron who have been around since 2005. (You kidding me?!?!) Every year we see new cameras being launched into the market, and how well will the crop of old lenses (able to) keep up with the newer bodies?

Optics

Buying lenses is buying optic glass. But what kind/type of glasses the manufacturer employs does make a difference to the final image and this matters to all photographers. As a photographer, you will agree with me that it is not the brand, but the final output as that determines the result. Let’s see what glasses we are really buying.
– Sigma (C) 16 elements in 13 groups inclusive of 3 Aspherical glass + 4 SLD glass
– Sigma II 18 elements in 14 groups inclusive of 3 Asperical glass + 2 SLD glass + 1 FLD glass
– Canon 16 elements in 12 groups inclusive of 2 UD glass + 2 Aspherical glass
– Nikon 16 elements in 12 groups inclusive of 3 Asperical glass + 2 ED glass
– Tamron 15 elements in 13 groups inclusive of 1 XR Refractive glass + 8 LD glass + 3 Aspherical glass

Looking at the chart above, it is very obvious that the 2014 Sigma (C) lens has the best glass combo among the competition. SLD glass is actually the same as Canon’s famed Fluorite compound and this is the 1st time that Sigma actually packs 4 of these glass into 1 lens! So images are expected to be razor sharp, contrasty and full of details. Looking at the review photos, the 2014 Sigma (C) version did not disappoint. So finally we get a super-zoom (wide focal range all-in-1 zoom lenses) that gives the user a good focal range coverage but with good image quality too!

F Stops & Aperture

There isn’t much to compare for F Stops as all the 5 lenses here are comparatively similar. However, the aperture plays an important role here. The new Sigma (C) version comes with a 7 blades aperture that is modeled after a rounded iris which produces natural looking bokehs – but tack sharp images. The Sigma II (7 blades), Nikon (7 blades) & Canon (6 blades) versions uses a Rounded diaphragm that gives reasonably round bokehs that are acceptable in most photography standards while the Tamron (7 blades) has a non-rounded configuration that gives an “edgy bokeh blur”. Not putting Tamron down but in year 2005, that was probably the best configuration that a lens can get.

Minimum Focusing Distance & Magnification Ratio
Although some of these lenses here has the word “Macro” on it, please get this clear. These are NOT macro lenses. The “Macro” here means either the lens can be used at a much closer focusing distance than other regular lenses or the lens is able to produce a higher magnification so that you can crop a lot more without losing details from the original photo. The winner here has to be the 2014 Sigma (C) version as it can focus from as near as 39cm. The Sigma II, Tamron, & Canon are focusing from 45cm and Nikon starts to focus only from 50cm away from the subject. This is important if you like to shoot close-up photos like the occasional flower or stamps from your table top. The closer you can get to the subject, the more details you get.

The magnification ratio below seems to pair off with the minimum focusing distance as reported above. See for yourself what are these lenses capable of magnifying.
2014 Sigma (S) = 1:3
Sigma II = 1:3.8
Tamron = 1:3.7
Nikon = 1:4.5
Canon = 1: 4.2

Autofocus
Well focusing speed is another point to note. Made as “super-zoom” lenses, many such lenses suffer badly from slow focusing or incorrect focusing resulting in blur or out-of-focus photos. All 5 lenses here are IF (Internal focusing) lenses. But the focusing motors are different. The 2014 Sigma (C), Sigma II & Nikon uses super fast motors. Sigma’s proven Hypersonic motors (HSM) & Nikon’s Silent Wave motor (SWM) allows super fast & near-silent focusing while Canon & Tamron uses the traditional Micro motor drive that are much slower and seriously loud during operation. Hopefully the next 18-200mm from Tamron will have the PZD (already fitted on Tamron 18-270mm) and Canon will have their Ultrasonic motor (USM) fitted to their next 18-200mm.

Size & Weight
For super zoom, most of the time the lens is targeted at fuss-free shooters who views convenience as an important buying factor. It can be a travelling lens, or a lens that is going to be used in harsh weather condition where changing of lens is really not possible. So size can be the next important factor here. Among the 5 lenses here, the 2014 Sigma (C) has the smallest barrel diameter of 70.7mm while Tamron has the largest barrel diameter of 83.7mm. The shortest of them all has to be Tamron with a length of 73.8mm while the longest lens here is Canon at 102mm. Both Canon & Nikon uses 72mm filters while the 2014 Sigma (C), Sigma II & Tamron uses 62mm filters. The new 2014 Sigma (C) beats the rest here by having a very petite overall dimension of 70.7 x 86mm.

Weight wise, the light weight champion here is none other than Tamron at a mere feather weight of 398gm. As the scale progresses on, the new 2014 Sigma (C) weights 430gm, the Sigma II at 490gm, the Nikon at 563gm and the heaviest of the 5 lenses here are Canon’s version standing at 595gm. Canon wins the lot here by being the heaviest lens. Weight is subjective to many too, personally I will love a weighty lens, but not one that feels heavier by the minute especially when I am trekking or climbing a mountain. For this section, I will say the 2004 Sigma (C) has to be my choice – although it is slightly heavier than the Tamron, but adding up the specs that I had given earlier above, the decision is pretty obvious isn’t it?

Finishing, Barrel Material & Color
The external finishing of a lens does determines how much abuse it can take and when used under different weather elements.
The new 2014 Sigma (C) version is the only lens here that has a Matt metallic finish while the rest of the lenses here came with Matte plastic finishing. On the Color department, the new 2014 Sigma (C) came in Metallic Dark Grey (almost gun metal) while Sigma II & Tamron has their version in Matt black. Nikon opted for darker grey while Canon decided on the light grey. No matter what color a lens is painted with, it does not affect your image (for the un-initiated). But most photographers of today prefers a darker and meaner looking lens so the new 2014 Sigma (C) once again scores with the younger & modern photographers.

Except the new 2014 Sigma (C), all the other 4 lenses has their lens barrel made from standard engineering plastics and this is where the new Sigma scores again. Incorporating the use of Thermally Stable Compound – or  better known now as TSC in short, this is a new material which we first seen on the company’s 35mm F1.4 (A) art line lens. The TSC exhibits little structure variation in extreme temperature conditions with almost negligible thermal shrinkage, and it shares its material properties closely with aluminum.  So would you prefer TSC or plastic?

However when I tried shooting in another different direction of the sun light and the hotspots were gone. See below photos.

Others

With a super zoom, chances of hand shakes at telephoto focal ranges are common. Both the new 2014 Sigma (C) & Sigma II lenses comes with the company’s Optical Stabiliser (OS), Nikon has its version equipped with Vibration Reduction (VR) & Canon also has their Image Stabilizer (IS) built into their 18-200mm. Tamron did not add their Vibration Control (VC) which totally puzzles me. Then again, this is a 2005 lens.

Summary
The new 2o14 Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM (C) has changed the way photographers look at the super zoom lenses. Long focal range lenses are not just for covering various focal length anymore, now it can produce high quality & sharp images. Sigma takes APS-C users seriously if you have been following Sigma’s past lenses, you will agree with me that Sigma made the most market-leading APS-C lenses since the digital photography boom. This 2014 Sigma 18-200mm (C) is no exception and this continues the legacy of placing photographers above profit and making lenses that creates high quality images with a reasonable asking price.

With the amount of design improvements and know-hows from Sigma’s extensive lens-making experience, this new lens is on its way to bag another award soon.

20th February 2014, Singapore – Launched in 2008, the Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM has never aged. In fact this wonder lens is still current and very much relevant to Pentax photographers. Created as a DA* lens, this lens is under Pentax’s professional line of optics. Equivalent to 24-75mm on 35mm format, the 16-50mm is no doubt the best lens for all its digital SLR cameras. Fully compatible with all new Pentax DSLRs & all the back-run camera bodies, this is a very affordable lens that promises excellent images and interesting colors.

A weather proof lens, the lens build is of excellent quality and it seems like the lens can take lots of heavy uses (& abuses too). The SP coating (Pentax Super Coating) further proves that this lens was designed for outdoor too as it repels dusts, dirt, water dews and even grease. The SDM (Silent Drive Motor) are another point worth mentioning. The focusing is extremely fast and near total silence when in operation. To compare blankly, the SDM is as fast, as quiet & as efficient as Canon’s USM, Nikon’s SWM & Sony’s SSM.

The Pentax 16-50mm produces contrasty and sharp images with no loss of details. Use it with the creative filters in most Pentax cameras, your next set of travel photos can be exciting like mine too.

Internally, Pentax 16-50mm creates beautiful bokehs with its 9 blades aperture and I was really hoping that Pentax will release a F2 version so that at 50mm, this lens can double up as a big aperture portrait lens. Pentax spared no effort on the optics too, this mid sized lens has 15 elements in 12 groups, among the glasses, and there are 2 Aspherical elements and 1 SD element, impressed? No? Well with all the goodies included, this lens only weights a mere 565g – light enough for shooting in any situation & anywhere.

I took this lens to Bhutan a couple of months ago for my honeymoon and have it paired to a Pentax K-30. The Pentax K-30 is also a weather-sealed DSLR so it is perfect to have the 16-50mm on it. I used this lens 90% of the time while I was at Bhutan and I find that there isn’t much need to switch lenses although I have with me a fisheye & a 35mm. This lens performs well and I have most of the focal range covered seamlessly. Do check out the photos in this article that I had shot at Bhutan with the Pentax 16-50mm.

To summarize, the Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM is an excellent walkabout & travel lens. Covering from wide angle landscape to mid tele for street portraits and zooming in to architectural details, this lens does it all. So if you are looking to purchase a tough Pentax walkabout lens, get this lens!

19th February 2014, Singapore – The Lensbaby Composer lens was released since 2010 and it had been replaced by the Composer Pro in June 2011. Many had asked me what are the differences between the 2 focus-shifting lens – which I simplied as new vs old. That saved me the hassle of explaining how both works exactly the same and yet built differently.

Those who are new to Lensbaby may find the literature available from their website to be a little intimidating to read. Well, do not fret, we are not technical here either but rather, we would like to show you what kind/ types of photos you can get from using the Composer. (Effects from the newer Composer Pro will be very similar)

We took the Lensbaby Composer out recently for a walk and we came back with the photos below.

Available in many camera mounts, almost everyone with any DSLR can use the Lensbaby Composer (same for the Pro).
It has a focal range of 50mm with a complete set of interchangeable aperture discs so you can choose what you wish to use to create the effect that you desire. Take out the aperture blade you will be shooting at a sweet F2.0 and this was what I did for this article. A pretty small lens (2.25×2.5 inches), and almost “weightless” (104.9g), the Lensbaby deserved to be carried to everywhere & anywhere.

Personally, I feel that the Composer is a fun lens to use. It distorts reality in a fun way and it brings focus to any part of the photo. However it takes a little getting used to before one can fully use the lens to its full potential. With a reasonable asking price now for the Composer Pro, I am sure you will enjoy using Lensbaby as much as I do.  You can read up more here about Lensbaby and all its other products/optices. The speedy new camera (model ILCE-6000) is also equipped with a high-resolution 24.3 MP image sensor and powerful BIONZ X processor. This powerful combination of features ensures that still images, full HD videos and all fleeting moments are captured in sharp focus and incredible detail.

New ultra-fast AF system

Even quicker than most professional DSLRs, the phenomenal autofocus speed of the α6000 camera is powered by Sony’s advanced Hybrid AF system.  The new model features a focal plane phase-detection AF sensor with an extremely wide autofocus coverage area – 179 focal points– that is teamed with high-precision contrast-detection AF.  This potent combination allows the camera to accurately track and respond to a subject moving through nearly the entire frame, and to shoot at an eye-popping speed of up to 11 frames per second with continuous autofocus.  It’s an unprecedented combination of speed and frame coverage in today’s market.

Design and Controls

The new camera’s clear, bright OLED Tru-Finder lets you see a live preview of all setting adjustments before the shot is taken, so what you see is exactly what you get.  Conveniently placed mode and control dials on top of the camera give easy access to commonly used settings.  Additionally, a ‘Function’ button and two additional customizable buttons give quick access to any one of 47 assignable functions.  There’s also a built-in flash for extra flexibility in any shooting situation.

Wi-Fi® and PlayMemories™

The α6000 camera has built-in Wi-Fi, giving consumers one-touch connection with Xperia® or NFC-compatible Android™ smartphones or tablets for instant image transfer and sharing2.  A single touch also activates Smart Remote Control, linking the camera with a smartphone or tablet for a live image preview, to fire the shutter from a distance and to review shots instantly.

For devices without NFC one-touch capabilities, users can wirelessly transfer images and videos and activate Smart Remote Control through Sony’s free PlayMemories Mobile™ application, available for the iOS and Android platforms.

Pricing and Availability

The Sony α6000 compact interchangeable lens camera will be available in April 2014 in black and silver in a kit with a compact, versatile 16-50mm motorized zoom lens (model SELP1650) price to be announced on arrival to Singapore.  It will also be offered separately as a body..

Sony has also announced the price of its previously announced full frame E-mount 70-200mm F4 G OSS telephoto zoom lens (model SEL70200G).   This lens will be available in March too – price to be advised on arrival.

The new camera and all compatible lenses and accessories will be available at Sony retail stores (www.store.sony.com) and other authorized dealers nationwide.

11th February 2014, Singapore – For some strange unexplained reason, my earlier (2012) review of the Sigma 150mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro went missing in cyber-pandora. Due to many requests from my students & friends who are big fans of macro photography, I had decided to do up this review to “complete” my set of user reviews on Sigma macro lenses.

The current version of the Sigma 150mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro is actually a Mark II (1st version has no OS and uses the old peel-when-aged body coating) which many keen eyes will be quick to point out that the lens was built using a much better material than its predecessor. Looks like engineered plastics, the fact is, the barrel was made from TSC (thermally stable compound) and was used as a test run for the current versions of new Sigma Art, Contemporary & Sport line lenses.

Made as a premium Sigma lens, this high performance macro lens are designed to fill in the focal range gap for between 90/100/105mm & 180mm which makes lots of sense. A full frame lens, this 9Blades (aperture) 150mm offers excellent bokehs (at F2.8) that creates stunning portraits while the 150mm also gives the user a good working range when photographing tiny insects from a distance or for general table top studio uses. Designed for high versatility and general use, this 150mm is the “almost-all-you-need” lens for medium telephoto range.

When used with APS-C DSLRs, this 150mm effectively becomes a 225mm* telephoto lens allowing the user to do more like sports or even birds photography. (*240mm on Canon APS-C & 195mm on Canon APS-H sensor bodies) To ensure this 150mm lives up to its claimed performance, Sigma included the company’s long proven Optical Stabilizer (OS) in 3 operating modes to ensures the user will be ready to shoot with assist in any shooting situation, a blazing fast Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) for that spot-on focusing in fraction of a second. The HSM is noted for their accuracy, almost silent high-speed focusing.

Focusing range is selectable from 3 pre-set range allowing the user to tailor the focusing distance and speed to their shooting. On the exterior, apart from the excellent lens finishing, the handling are user-friendly. The AF/MF switch, the Focus Range switch & the OS Mode switch are thoughtfully arranged and the focusing ring is smooth and very easy to operate. At 1150kg, the 150mm is considered light weight for handheld shooting and it comes with a tripod mount ring for that added versatility should the user decides to use a monopod or tripod with this lens. APS-C users will be glad to know that in the retail box, Sigma had included an APS-C hood adaptor together with the hood so that users using this lens on APS-C bodies will not compromised on stray lights or other light pick-ups. (Phenomenon where long lenses are used on smaller sensors which are positioned nearer to the lens.

With all the goodies incorporated into the 150mm, the package will not be complete without Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating. Known for its ability to reduce flares & image ghosting, color rendering are also near perfect at an approximate 95% (color chart test at Auto WB) which is perfect – for what it was designed for. The 150mm is a true macro lens with 1:1 (life size reproduction) and it focuses as near as 15 inches as claimed by Sigma. On our field test, this lens is still focusing accurately at 10 inches! This lens is sharp – very sharp as expected from a true macro lens. Internally there are 19 elements in 13 groups which I did not expect due to the light weight. Personally, I am more concerned with the final image quality which this lens pleases me.

Fully compatible with Sigma’s full range of accessories, the 150mm will be best purchased with the company’s tele-convertors and the macro flash which are individually known for their proven capabilities.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 NEO Classic

18th January 2014, Singapore – The “instant photo system” (IPS) – as what Fujifilm calls their cameras under the Instax product line is currently the most popular IPS cameras among the youth now. The Instax line are setting trends for pop culture and bringing back the retro-feel called “instant gratification” cameras since the popularity picks up steam again in 2010. Although it is publicly known to the photography market that almost all entry-level Instax cameras are cheap and attractively packaged for the younger crowd, I was truly surprised by Fujifilm’s latest Top-of-the-line Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic. The Neo Classic was only launch in Sep 2013, less than 6 months ago.

My wife gave me the 90 Neo Classic as a gift (Pictured above) just a couple of days ago and man I was really excited. I have heard so much positive reviews about this camera. From what I heard, the Neo Classic is loaded with more functions than any other Instax ever made and it has loads of improvements from the cheaper models.

On first look, the Neo Classic is far from anywhere near pop culture. The retro look that was made and designed to look like a rangefinder/slr will attract a totally different crowd in my view. Sorry ladies, the Instax is no longer cute. This time, real photographers will be attracted to get it not just for its looks, but for its useability too.

So what are the key functions of this beautiful instant camera?
Stop dreaming you are getting a Fujinon lens – but this lens is not too bad as it is still a 2 components, 2 elements lens with a fixed focal range of 60mm and an aperture 0f 12.7. (Automatically shift to F22 when Macro Mode is switched on) Although the films that I bought are ASA800, that does not means that I am invincible now when clubbing, from the combined specs (lens + shutter + flash) I still think this is an outdoor camera.

Fujifilm claimed that the Neo Classic comes with a High Performance Flash. After fumbling with the camera, my guess is the flash to linked up to a meter which actually controls the amount of flash require for each shooting scene. I will rather call it smart flash. Then there is a Party Mode. After trying out a few shots, i gather that this is what we call “shadow correction” + “Slow Sync flash” in DSLR language. Still, it is a good try for an instant camera don’t you think so?

The Kids Mode employs a faster speed shutter, while Landscape Mode & Macro mode are more of telling the user where are the minimum focusing to infinity distance, it does not really change the photo in anyway. However, the Bulb Mode was a really good try. Before you try mounting ND Filters on the Neo Classic, please understand that the Bulb Mode in Instax context means 10 full seconds only. Although this Bulb mode is not for real, but it is definitely a breakthrough for Instax to be able to do this. (with a tripod of course). The other feature I really like was the Double Exposure, who says instant photos cannot shoot twice on a same frame? Neo Classic did it.

I welcome the use of a proper rechargeable battery (like a compact camera) over the AA off the shelves type. FujiFilm claimed that a full charge will last the user 10 packs of film, not bad in my view for an instant-do-all camera. The LCD Panel at the back are excellent so that you know what you are doing or end up shooting in the wrong mode accidentally. With “Bulb” mode available now, the Neo Classic comes with a tripod socket so that you don’t have to place your Neo Classic on everywhere or hold your breath for 10 seconds, so far so good? yeah, I think so. I like what I see and what I’ve gotten from the camera and I think this is an instant camera that all photographers should have.

Peter Lee Custom Macro Flash Diffuser

– Macro photography is catching on a lot of interests in the recent years in Singapore. This is not surprising as Singapore is a tropical country, the climate and humidity plays host to over thousands of species of insects and nature wildlife. Being a garden city helps too – boasting a very strong ecology where the balance of plants & insects population thrives. That explains why so many photographers takes an interest to macro photography.

While we all (or most photographers) know that macro equipment are not cheap, photographers started to innovate their techniques & gear – yes, gear too. Although most of us can just pick up what we needed from the photography store, sometimes the equipment still cannot satisfy our quests for better results. This is where customization kicks in.

Peter Lee, a well-known professional macro photographer and an instructor finds himself into such a situation a few years ago. His issue was flash lighting. While macro dedicated flashes are available in the market by proprietory brands & third party makers, he understand that most photographers entering the macro genre will be more likely to own a regular flash gun (hot-shoe mounted) than to immediately purchase a macro dedicated flash which costs as much as a mid-focal range macro lens. Seeing how harsh the lighting had caused by the flash gun, Peter started thinking & experimenting – finding a way, finding a method or an equipment that are able to diffuse the flash light to soften the light cast while not compromising on the effective light throw distance and final illumination.

Addressing the lighting needs of macro photography, Peter decided that he should invent a flash diffuser and he did. Using a combination of materials, he calls it “Custom Diffuser”. This is because before he make a new diffuser, he will custom the size of the diffuser to the camera+lens combo that the person is using so the results will be as intended and promises no light loss and easy ease of use. For the rest of us in the photography circle/ community, we have given Peter’s diffuser a better name – we call it “Peter Lee Custom Diffuser” or “PLCD” in short. This name is catching on really fast among photographers as this diffuser works really well and promises excellent results. (Remember how Gary Fong shot to fame with his light dome?)

Out of curiosity, we contacted Peter and requested for a review unit. After explaining to us how to use the diffuser and other related information, we took the diffuser back to our studio and put it to the test. Check out the photos below.

(Please note the diffuser was meant for Nikon 60mm but we only had 105mm at test time, but we ended with good results anyway!)

We decided that my favorite toy car inside the studio toy box should be the subject and we took 2 shots of it. 1 without the diffuser and 1 with it. Check out the difference.

The 1st shot below is without the PLCD and the 2nd shot is with PLCD.

As we can see from the above, the results are pretty obvious. The PLCD created a more balanced cast/ exposure across the frame than the shot that was shot without the PLCD. The end result created was more “studio-like” and when I showed the above 2 photos to few fellow photographers, they commented that PLCD actually allows a much softer diffusing and yet not compromising on the final exposure output. This means, apart from macro, this diffuser is also very suitable for portraiture use and other table top applications.

14th January 2014, Singapore – There has been lots of arguements among the photography community here about how a photographer should be. This is highly subjective in many perspectives. Like for example, there are people who claimed to be a photographer just because they own tons of photography gears while their photos cannot even be considered a photo, or the poor working photographer who owns pretty amateur gears but produces world class images. So where does this stops (or begins)? I have compiled a little list here from my working experience as a photographer regionally, you have every right to disagree, as I already mentioned earlier, this is my personal views.

Type 01. The Gear Collector

It is definitely easy to sift out the Gear Collectors from your photography friends. The gear collector is only interested in the latest equipment, the higher end equipment or legacy equipment rather than producing decent photos. The person is likely to be posting his/her latest purchase all over social media and will always be seen with his/her latest purchase. The person will likely to be posting photos that your Grade 1 kid can already produce – sometimes worse than what your kid can produce. The same person will also be enthusiastically discussing about equipment purchase more than brushing techniques in photoshop.

I call this a “Gear Race”, especially when people of the same mentality comes together and start to outdo & outbuy equipment whether by brand, by class or by price. I am pretty amused whenever I come across such a (sometime heated) conversation. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy that people are spending to support the manufacturers that I purchase equipment from. Lastly, most real professionals does have a big & expensive inventory of equipment, but they use them, not display them or brag them. What is there to brag when professionals uses the gear to make a living while the gear collectors uses the gear to make a statement or or their presence?

I must admit that I was once a collector for rare lenses and cameras, but it came to a point where/when I realised I only have 2 hands and 2 legs and it does not makes sense for me to be filling up my dry cabinet with equipments that I seldom use. Rather than having those rare pieces of equipment in my dry cabinet, I am sure somebody out there will enjoy using it than having it for my own viewing pleasure. In the end I sold most of these lenses & cameras while making space for the equipment that I really need. Although I am still maintaining 5 camera brands systems, this is purely for my photography classes where I learn the various systems’ operating menus and loaning them to my students.

Type 02. The Announcer

A very interesting group of people here. You will know exactly where this person is, what he is doing and worse, how bad/good his/her business is/are. Announcing publicly on social media every time you have an assignment is not very smart. For a simple reason, likely you will also have competitors in your network, and people can count. When people start counting your assignments for a period of 12 months, it will also be publicly known how many (or little) assignment you’ve done for a year. Worse, with the market rates that are so open these day, people can also count how much (or little) you have earned in a year. Not a wise choice right?

Photography is a very competitive market segment in Singapore, by announcing what you are doing and where you are doing it by checking in location, you are also telling your competitors who you are (likely) to be shooting for. Where do you think this will lead to? More businesses? Think again. Whether you are a amatuer or a working professional, think hard where this will leads to.

I used to check-in a lot whenever I am doing an assignment or commercial work. I thought that was fun until I paid dearly for a lesson that I will never forget. That was exactly 3 years ago if I remember correctly. I was shooting frequently for a shoe company for their safety shoes and industrial grade footwear for advertisement copies. Then 1 day when I was packing my equipment for another shoot for the said company, I received a call from the Marketing Manager who contracted me to shoot their shoes. Here’s an edited conversation.

Shoe Guy: Hey Allan, I know we had agreed on a rate for your fees. Can you lower it by another 25%?

Me: Hi, but it is already very low and I am able to give you this rate as you are giving me monthly jobs to shoot.

Shoe Guy: You really sure? I have a photographer guy who called me yesterday and told me he can do a better job than you and he charges almost 50% less than your fees.

Me: (shocked), I have been shooting your shoes and producing great advertising copies and we are working well together, this came as a shocker to me. Is price an issue?

Show Guy: Sorry but yes, businesses keep cost low to ensure higher profits. If you are not able to adjust, I am afraid I have to appoint that guy to be our photographer from now on.

Me: Fine, I am disappointed but it’s ok, good luck.

It finally dawn on me what exactly happened. A fellow photographer on my Facebook had been monitoring my check-ins and all he did was to google the location/ company that I checked in to, then make a call to the company and requested to speak to the person in charge of engaging photographers, then made his pitch with a huge attractive discount and I lost my income. Low life? Yes, we have a lot of such people in our life especially on social media. Since then, I have stopped Checking-in to locations where I will be doing my commercial work, so no one really knows who I am shooting for or what I am exactly shooting these days. I still check in whenever I am teaching photography classes though, this is more for my students to know where to find me and that I have already arrived.

Type 03. The Attention Seeker

As mentioned in my earlier point, photography business is competitive and some times tough in Singapore. And you make it worse by bringing more attention to yourself. Some may look at it as advertising, but it is really working?
I am so very sure you wil have 1 or 2 (or more) “friends” on your social media circle that are constantly posting “little trivial status/updates” about what they are doing a few times a day. And they expect people to “LIKE” it or comment on it.

Here’s some examples (There are certainly more):

“Finally completed XXX assignments and I have 3000+ photos to process.”

“Shooting another wedding back to back later – feeling meh.”

“Trying out my new XXXX brand camera later.”

“Setting up photo booth for a D&D shoot later.”

“Rushing XXXX photos now.”

“Can’t believe some people (do this) & (do that) at the event that I was shooting.”

“Some people blah blah blah blah.”

Above is a few examples and I am sure you can easily relate them to some people on your social media circle.
Ask yourself, will a real professional photographer do that? With a reputation and impression to upkeep, the above just kill it all. Imagine to be branded as a “nagging photographer”, or a “bitchy political photographer” or anything that does not sound nice at all. Such are the common behavior of amateur photographers who are trying to gain an audience. You may beg to differ as you would probably be updating your status/shout-outs more frequently, but it is the content (like above) that kills everything.

Editor’s Note
Seriously? You have every right to do the above since it is your social media account and you are the “King” on your little cyber space. But have you spare a thought for the rest of us on your account circle? Imagine having not less than 20 updates in 24 hours about your rantings and little shout-outs are irritatingly unbearable. You may argue that if that irritates me then don’t view it – well, that means deleting you or blocking you completely – does that make sense if we are real friend offline and not a friend anymore online? Will you question me why I deleted you off my friends list later? Why create a situation like this when you can actually prevent it – by ranting less and expecting every person on your friend list to like it. And when a person did not LIKE your update, do you regard the person as a competitor or enemy? Go figure.

Type 04. The Professional Commentor

On social media, I am sure everyone of you would have a good mix of photographers in your list – comprising of beginners, amateurs, semi-professionals, professionals, suppliers, dealers, educators, repairers or related services etc. Among the list, you will definitely have a photographer whom post more comments than real images. Whether these people are real pros or pretending to be pros, this person will be commenting on photos all day – finding faults. And it had came to light that most of these people are really amateurs pretending to be pros.

Most call them the professional commentor as most of them do not (probably cannot) even produce decent photos to start with. They speak with the same tone taken off some photography magazines/ websites and they are also the same lot of people who will constantly “correct” you on your photos. Please do not be confused with real comments from genuine friends who are trying to help you improve your art, the genuine comments are straightforward, with tips on how to improve and sometimes ends (usually) with an encouragement. However on the other end, the comments made by the professional commentor are mostly blunt, sarcastic without really assigning a reason to why or what was wrong with your photo in the first place. And when you try to clarify with such a person, you will likely be greeted with more defensive and harsher words. Encountered such a person before?
Don’t worry, professionals don’t do this. Your photo is probably fine.

Editor’s Note
In my view, the professional commentors are trying to cover up their incapabilities with words rather than showing some real work that they have produced. Their comments are not designed to help others improve but instead, outward discouraging and calculated to put you down. By putting you down, they will be “above” you. And they are everywhere! From photography forums, to facebook, to instagram, you can easily spot out such persons from their comments on others’ photos. When asked how a photo can be done better, they will usually offer some very basic or amateurish advice which makes you wonder if there was a need for the same person to comment negatively in the first place. Remember, real photographers (whether new or pro) who are genuinely trying to help you will offer you a point-out, a suggestion to improve & an encouragement.

Type 05. The Price Warrior

I had mentioned above that the photography market in Singapore is tough and very competitive. So one of the easiest shortcut that (not all but) most struggling photographers took was to launch a price war. And what these “price warriors” did was more than just killing the industry, it had cheapened the art and the profession and worse, it has became a factor for decision for potential clients. In the good old days, the deciding factor to engage a photographer was the person’s work, the standard, the artistic approach by the photographer, not the price he/she charge. Sadly all these had evolved.

It will be different if everyone can charge what they are really worth, when that happens, the cycle will be reversed. Then it will be the photographers who will choose who they wish to shoot for, and not the other way round. Just take an example from other non-related industries. The minute price war starts, the consumers gains, the industry produces cheaper quality to meet the demands and trying to make a profit by the volume – now think, can we duplicate this to the photography industry? Now our clients are the consumers and we represent the industry in the above example, means we have to shoot a lot more for less money, isn’t this suicide?

Editor’s Note
It does not matter if your are a professional, a semi-pro with a full time job, an amateur learning the ropes of this industry or simply taking out your first step as a beginner. Charge accordingly to your level so that the industry will have several price brackets for clients to choose from. This will also separates the different types of paying scales from the clients. This will ultimately drives the message across that “you get what you pay for”. Isn’t this better for everybody? Waging a price war is waging a war on yourself. Think twice before you give that huge discount. Ask yourself, is it worth it at all.

Type 06. The Contestor

Another (common) type of photographer amongst us are no doubt the contestor. This person will enter every photo competition available and will try to win it. Some of them are already very accomplished photographers producing excellent photos with good standards, but this is not enough. They will resort to many tricks and ways just to ensure they win. I am not sure why but I know some of these people likes to be called “An Award-Winning Photographer” and what I am going to reveal here might shocked you.  I have been a Judge for numerous photography competitions/ contests and there are some things/loopholes that I noticed.

– It is always the same group of people entering contests/ competitions.
– Some re-cycle their old photos to enter many competitions.
– Some uses another person’s name to enter the competition so there’s a higher winning chance.
– Some process their photos so much that it is hard to believe those are real photos.

While some are out to win the fame and to better their personal portfolio (this is perfectly legal), there are some who are out solely for the monetary gains. If a cash prize is up for grabs, be prepared to see a rocketed record of entries, if a DSLR is the prize, you will see slightly lesser entries – usually the prize is an entry-level DSLR that wouldn’t fetch much money in the resale market. If the top prize is a holiday trip or a professsional line DSLR, the mob goes wild again, get the drift? Same group of people – yes. This is very common. From 2010-2013, I have been invited to be on the judging panel of many public as well as private photo competitions/ contests and after a few rounds of judging, some names had caught my attention. Because their names keep showing up – everywhere! Singapore may be small, but not to the extent of having the same Mr. XXXX entering in almost every competition known to me. In fact I almost suspected that this group of people compete in competitions full time. For fame or the prize, I cannot comment, but what irks me are those who re-cycle their photos. For example in 2011, there was a competition with a theme “Celebrations 2011” and as expected, many submitted their fireworks photos. Then there was an excellent photo by a famous (award-winning) photographer which I decided to do a check. We checked the exif data and found out that the photo was shot in 2009, then we checked the terms & conditions, there was a clause that clearly states that the photo submitted must be shot in 2011, so needless to say, the photo was disqualified immediately. Had I not noticed the “famous name”, I would not have discover this and may even foolishly graded this person’s work.

Another scam (as I call it), a photographer enters a set of 3 photos into a competition/ contest. Then this photographer enters another 2 sets of photos (3 photos per set) using his wife & his son’s names. Going by the law of averages, that means the same person now has 09 photos with a bigger ratio chance that he might win the competition. So can you imagine if this photographer enters 20 sets of photos (60 photos) into the competition, what are the likelyhood that this photographer will win? It works on a very simple logic here, if any of the entries won the contest, the “person with the borrowed name” who submitted will get a cut from the photographer. So any of the entries won, the same photographer still wins, get it?

Competitions are designed to allow the community to better themselves in the craft, not a tool for people to profit out of this. If you are good, there’s no need to enter multiple entries. If you are poor, go get a job or do more assignments, don’t deprive of others’ works to rightfully win a prize.

Type 07. The Politician

Although personally I encourage all my students and fellow photographers to make more friends rather than enemies, there will certainly be rivalry in the circle/ industry. Beware of “Frienemies”, a common term coined to describe the kind of people on your social media circle who are “friends” by cyber-connection but Not exactly a friend to start with. This is the kind of photographer who are also commonly known as the “2-headed snake” or the “undercover” – i call them politician, whichever you call them, be really careful. What you posted on your social media may ended up as a full thread discussion on your posting as the politician will seize every opportunity to bring you down while (still) putting on a good friendly front. In many cases that I have encountered, the victims usually got themselves into deep trouble and without knowing who exactly double-crossed them.

These malicious serpents are politically correct when they speak to either party and they are always seen as the neutral person when fronting either sides. You may wish to make a mental list of such people who are surrounding you and be really careful of comments you made about another photographer. To save yourself from unnecessary misunderstandings, compliment others instead of commenting on others. Seriously what other photographers do is none of your business. Agree?

I believe everyone of you would have encountered, or know of someone who have been a victim of double-crossing. Think again why would anybody sought discort for the stupidiest of reasons? Think hard, if both parties fell out over a misunderstanding caused by such a politician, the last one standing will be the poisonous snake, agree?

After having been a victim and admittedly tried the role of a snake myself, I find it all too childish and a waste of precious time. Since then, I have never trusted a single person in my life including my family and I watch carefully what comes out from my mouth ever since. Importantly, anything I say, it has to be politically correct. So be careful the next time when someone try to gossip with you about another photographer, keep all the things you badly want to say to yourself because you really won’t know is this friendly person in front of you is a politically correct snake.

Type 08. The News Bringer

At times, there is really no need to read the news. From the latest camera/ lens launch to weather forecast, there will be a photographer on our social media circle who will bring you the latest news, faster than Fox News at times. This person is also the number 1 sharer of postings from other sources so try to make such a person to your advantage. The person may not have any ill intention for doing what he/she is doing, but flooding your updates/ timeline with non-photography related stuff may eventually kill you in a irritating way.

Imagine you posted an update of a great wedding couple that you have just shot, then the headlines scream “Photographer Shot Couple at Wedding”.
I leave the rest to your imagination.

For the very same reason above, I kept a separate account that is non photography-related and I would prefer to see what photos others are shooting rather than what they had for lunch. Those, I will have them on my other account that is not related to photography. It is not easy, personally I had messed this up. When I am in the mood to view photos, I am greeted with tons of lunch photos, when I am in the mood to see what my friends are up to, all that I saw was weird news shared from other weird sites. Today, I have given up trying to sort this out and I simply enjoy everything that my friends posted. Yes, even their lunch.

Type 09. The Brand Fan Boys

Brand rivalry is nothing new to photographers. We are all part of this. Since the day you decided on a brand of camera, you live, work & swear by it. There will be arguements on which brand might be better, but it really boils down to user preferences & ease of use. Importantly, it is the final image that you give your clients, not what you used.
It is evident that we have many such Fan Boys around us. All it takes to spark things off will be the classic question of “Which is Better? Canon or Nikon?” then you will see how the Canon & Nikon users “fight” while the brand owners are having coffee at the Japan Camera Association meeting with the Canon President & Nikon CEO having green tea and laughing.

I can understand why most people swear by a certain brand. Camera equipment are not cheap by any standard, so after spending a big sum of money on a system, will the person say bad things about the camera he/she bought? No right? (majority will swear by it.) So everyone is entitled to their preference and there is no need to put others down.
Let the skills & images talk instead.

Editor’s Note
Every 4 out of 5 arguements on photography forums are always ignited by brand talks where fan boys tries to belittle the rival brand. There is no need to as every system has their Pros & Cons. If you have not fully understand your own system, don’t even comment on another brand. If a brand really sucks, then the brand will not be here today and still producing cameras. Spend your time on better things.

Type 10. The Socialite

This photographer is well received by everyone. This person will likely to be extremely sociable, makes friends with everyone, like every status updates/ shoutouts & photos – even bad ones. This person encourages everyone, this person will greet every birthdays & anniversaries. This person is “google-ready” and always have answers to your questions within seconds. This person is usually harmless and basically has too little assignments/ outings but have too much time to spare. This person stalks every other persons on his/her friend list and is always there – spooky.

At times you even wonder if this person is real or is it a “Social Bot” programmed to be behave like this.
Nevertheless, please be mindful that such a socialite may turned out to be the Type 04 or 07 mentioned above, so be very careful when someone suddenly takes an extra interests at your online activities.

I have a couple of socialites on my social media circle. Some of them are accomplished & well known photographers while there are some really questionable ones which I had never seen a decent photo produced by them. I later came to understand that some of these people enter the photography circle to find company, find friends, find a relationship/ spouse and there are some who are simply shamelessly looking for a swing.
Friends with benefits get it?

To end the series, I have decided to add on a “Bonus”, the Type 11 – The Sex Driven.

Type 11. (Bonus) The Sex Driven

I had published an article recently (link) about how both nude models & nude photographers can protect themselves due to many cases being reported officially and unofficially. I can understand that people have needs and we are all just humans. But ethically & professionally, we must understand that during such a shoot, the models can take off their pants but the photographers must wear a pants. Photography is an art, not an art of exploitation. Sadly there are many sex-driven nude “photographers” who are more interested in “shooting” you in a different way. (Pun intended).
