Sigma FP with 24-70mm DG DN | ART

01st August 2020, Singapore – Following our last review on Sigma fp with the 45mm, we cannot get enough of the fp and did up a 2nd review for the fp and this time with Sigma’s L-Mount 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN ART lens. The 24-70mm range had probably rule the professional zoom lens segment for almost 2 decades after replacing the then popular 28-75mm focal length, these days, only 24-70mm rules. From our previous review, we are well aware what the fp is capable of, so this round, we will be pushing the fp a little harder with a zoom lens.

The Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN (A) is designated as an Art series lens, in short, this is the top of the line zoom lens you can buy from Sigma and today we will be focusing a little more on this lens and how well (or bad) it is while paired to the Sigma fp camera.

Measuring at 87.8mm × 122.9mm, the 24-70mm ART seems to dwarfed out the fp. But I am not surprised since the 24-70mm does pack a punch inside – the optics are arranged as 19 elements in 15 groups and that includes 06 FLD Glass, 02 SLD Glass & 04 Aspherical Glass – now that is a lot of premiums inside a single lens! Well we are not suprised that Sigma had designed this lens with so many premium elements but since this is going to be the flagship zoom lens, why not?

Although the 24-70mm ART are pretty weighty at 835gm, the design of the lens kinda make up for it with more purposeful grip and that helps a lot with handling!

During our review, we noted the 11 rounded aperture blades gave us creamy and smooth bokehs. The front of the lens accepts 82mm screw-on filters which we do not really fancy as 82mm filters are not cheap – however many lenses in the market now uses 82mm filters so we guess prices will come down soon.

As expected, Sigma had designed & build a solid lens that are fit for war. Featuring the company’s award-winning TSC material for the lens barrel, the overall feel of the lens does feels expensive with its layout and ergonomics.

When paired to the Sigma fp that was made with 100% aluminum,  everything just falls into place.

Taking advantage of Sigma fp’s 35mm Full Frame (full size effective) bayer sensor with 24.6 million pixels, we decided to head out to Gardens by the Bay to test out this interesting combo of Sigma fp + Sigma 24-70mm Art.

The bokeh at F2.8 is crazily smooth and the focused area are tacked sharp. Lots of details were possible with the fp’s sensor.

When we moved to F5.6, we were surprised at how well the fp produced the image, try opening any of the images in this review and view at 100% – you will be amazed.

While the minimum focusing distance is about 18cm and it has a magnification ratio range of 1:2.9 Wide –  1:4.5 Tele, we did some serious cropping (about 50%) to check out the details captured. See the below pic.

We are glad to share that NO DETAILS were lost!  This is amazing – then again, we attribute this to the fp’s mighty sensor.

We like the versatility of wide (24mm) to tele (70mm) – apart from professional use, the 24-70mm covers a wide range of photographic possibilities. During this review, we shot almost everything that came within our sight, from toys, flowers, decorations, landscape and the 24-70mm performed well and definitely beyond our expectations.

Using the fp + 24-70mm, it turned out better than what we initially expected. We imagining breaking our arms holding this lens but we did not. The fp seems to grow itself on us throughout the session and we started to realized the real potential of the fp. Not just capable, but really competent.

While we love the Sigma fp, we will advise everyone to get/ bring a spare battery for the fp. Comparing to our last review which we did at Singapore’s Chinatown in blazing heat, the battery didn’t really lasted – but for this review shooting in a fully air-conditioned environment, the battery seems to last 20% longer. Maybe its just us, to verify, please check with your local Sigma dealer.
