Tamron SP 35mm F1.8 Di VC USD – Night Photos

05th November 2015, Singapore – Tamron recently sent me 2 new lenses namely the Tamron SP 35mm F.18 Di VC USD and the SP 45mm F1.8 Di VC USD. While many will be thinking, why would Tamron release 2 new lenses with such similar focal length – I assure you – Tamron is targeting 2 groups of photographers. The 35mm will be really for those who wants a standard wide angle walkabout lens with large aperture while the 45mm will be dearly loved by street photographers. This article is my night out with the Tamron SP 35mm F1.8 Di VC USD together with my co-reviewer Trisha Lim.

The Tamron SP 35mm F1.8 Di VC USD is an amazing lens. First and foremost, it falls under Tamron’s premium series (SP) and the Di means this lens is designed and made for (35mm) Full Frame cameras (useable on crop sensor bodies which works out to be about 52.5mm), the lens comes with the company’s proven Vibration Control (VC) that stabilizes images and low light shooting and of course, the ultra breakneck fast focusing from the Ultrasonic Drive (USD). OK, if you are new to Tamron lenses, it had already been explained to you in 150 words.

The Tamrom 35mm is compact and reasonably sized, and that makes it a very easy lens to handle when you are out doing a walkabout. Tamron spared no details in creating this lens – inside the lens, you get 10 elements in 9 groups including 1 LD glass, 1 XLD glass and 2 aspherical glass and probably that explained why the images are so sharp despite both of us shooting at wide open at almost every frame. Corner distortion control are one of the best in the industry and you can see that for yourself in the below photo.

The Tamron SP 35mm F1.8 Di VC USD was designed as a 9 blader with round leaves and it starts focusing from as close as 20cm and it accepts 67mm filters on its front. Package in the box includes warranty paperwork, hood, lens and all the caps – pretty Tamron. We will be back with the photos for day review as well as the review for 45mm F1.8. Pink Submission #11 “Finding Beauty in the Haze” Editor’s Picks

02^nd Nov 2015, Singapore – PINK Photographers Singapore (PPSG) took the monthly photo submissions a step further this round and use the annual haze pollution from a neighbouring country as a part of the theme for this submission. For those new to Singapore, every year, we have a 3^rd season apart from the “Sunny Summer” and our “Rainy Monsoon” seasons – the Haze season. Deforestations from burning down the harvested crops nearby Singapore had caused serious haze pollution problems as well as health problems. Visibility is bad, air is thick with pollutants and many fell sick so basically it affected almost everybody.

So this theme was not exactly easy for the submission since the haze levels inconsistently and we are at the mercy of the wind directions. And to get nice images with this theme was yet another difficult challenge for many. A total of 97 entries were received and we have picked the below images that best represent this theme. Before we get to the selected entries, let’s hear what the sponsor Serial i-Tech & the Editor AL have to say about the entries.

Here’s an interesting image of a toy figurine trying to cover her nose in the haze.
This is very creative and relevant, we love it!

2) Adding more to the haze – Image by Anny Tan.
Yes, it’s really bad at one point of time, but religion is religion. From what we understand, the smoke emitted from the joss sticks is not as bad as what our neighbor gave us.

3) Who Cares – Image by Soh Chui Lian
Yes the haze was bad. But life goes on, here’s an image of a couple relaxing by the beach.
While the haze hurt the economy a bit, people continue with their lives.

4) Hazy Sun Set – Image by Doris Ang
Sun rise and sun set during the hazy season can be dramatic and pretty. It’s like adding a “diffuser” onto the sun. Although blurry, the hues that the haze created is worth mentioning.

5) Haze in Singapore – Image by Fione
Yes, it’s bad. Usually we can see Pulau Ubin from this view and at the time when this image was shot, the island was completely blanketed in a thick haze to the point it is beyond our sight.

6) Mask Up Stormtroopers – Image by Fione
Another creative approach by Fione, here we have 2 cosplayers in full Stormtrooper outfit and yet their helmet is not able to fully filter out the haze and one of them have to wear an additional mask while helping another trooper to cover his nose. Cute max!

7) Garden by the Haze – Image by Iris Eu
Even the tourists attractions are covered in thick haze. In this submission by Iris Eu, this is an image of Gardens by the Bay with the cityscape in the background but the haze was so bad that this looks more like a burnt forest – I call it Garden by the Haze.

8) Smoke City – Image by Josephine Tang
Just how bad was the haze, this year we broke the 2012 record and at its peak, we saw PSI 421 while the culprit-country asked us to complain lesser. Then again, their people are suffering from PSI 2000, so we started complaining about Reserved Seats on MRT.

Making use of the haze, Magdalene used it to her advantage and created a really misty morning shot of a park in Singapore. And the haze probably put off people from leaving their house for morning walks so if you look carefully in this image – we only see ghost.

Regardless of PSI level, floral and faunas continue to bloom in glory. These are nature’s best statement that man-made disasters are no match for mother nature. Plants are also one of the best “air filter” provided by nature to mankind. So stop burning plantations!

The haze added a very calm and yet mysterious feel to this image. Siow Leng’s clever use of the haze and a monochrome rendering gave this photo a deep storyline which is worth a mention here. Nice feel.

If they keep burning, we keep planting. Although we won’t win, but at least we try.
People should start planting and stop burning.

Well these guys have to work, haze or no haze. Just when more than half of Singapore is safely hidden in somewhere with AC, these guys goes around their work in the open air – with masks of course.

Photography Workshops – By Professional Photographers

27th October 2015, Singapore – There are simply far too many photography schools and schools wannabes in Singapore. To create more confusion for the market, there are also many free-lance instructors and “instructors” – I am referring to those who knows a little knowledge and try to pass off as experienced instructors with no track records, no title, no certification, no accreditation, no awards and trying to teach. Don’t get me wrong, with all due respect to my fellow instructors and schools, there are also as many credible and established schools & able instructors out there – if you know how to find them.

Today, we are featuring 3 professional photographers who will soon launch their series of photography courses, talks and workshops in a couple of months and each of them has braved the challenges – and still braving the life of being a photographer who uses their equipment to pay their bills. I personally know Lisa Lum among the trio as she was responsible for my corporate portraits in 2008. Let’s take a deeper understanding of what they does, their strength and little glimpse into their life.

LISA LUM

Lisa is not new to many of us. Well known for her studio work majoring in portraits, Lisa does a variety of genres too. Always seen at events photo-booth or covering events, Lisa also does a lot of charity work by rendering photography support to these religious and charity organizations. I will describe her as a down-to-earth person who is always positive and ready to lend a hand. With her vast experiences in photography, I am sure she has a lot to offer and share to every photographer!

So I went on to ask Lisa to describe herself and she sent me the below;

“I AM a never-say-die entrepreneur who started my photography biz in 2005.

I almost fell off my chair when she sent me the above, then again, this is true, this is the real her, this is Lisa.

We asked Ray about his success formula and this is what he shared;

“You have to love what you are doing. More to that, what I love most about my job as a film director is the ability to master the domain knowledge and improve me interpersonal skills of understanding people’s needs and wants. This is crucial for making successful commercials and corporate videos. Importantly, the interaction with every level of the production line will be strengthened and this greatly helped me in character-building too. I’m enjoying every moment of it!” – Ray Neo

19^th October 2015, Singapore – As the world are placing their curious attention on the newly launched Sony a7SII, Sony sent me the a7RII. By now, most of you already know how it works, but for the sake of those new to the a7 series cameras, the product line has 3 models namely the “7” (base model), “7R” (R is for resolution and the R always has high mega pixel) & “7S” (S is for sensitivity, which is why the S always features insane level of ISO). As for today, all the Mark II for the respective model is on the market now replacing the original first generation line up.

For this article, we are going to take a closer look at the Sony a7RII. Although some of our subscribers emailed us and ask us why Sony is not sending the a7SII to us, we are unable to answer this but probably Sony Singapore has other plans for us since we are always trying to compare how cameras work rather than paper specs which we are not exactly interested. So if you found your way here looking for reasons to buy the Sony a7RII, you are in the right place, if you are looking for really technical stuff, then too bad, wrong site for you. (giggles)

We are going to refer the Sony a7R as “R” and the New Sony a7RII as “R2” for easier reading. Both cameras were set to the same settings during the review. And ALL images had been resized to 3000×2000 for easier loading. If you wish to view the full resolution image, please email us. Meantime, if you click on any of the photo in this article, you still get to view at full size of 3000×2000 – trust us, it’s already impressive.

So what has changed since the original R? Let’s take a quick glance. Both R & R2 still features super high resolution with the R2 featuring a new sensor with a higher megapixel now at 42.4 megapixel (the R has 36.4 megapixel) and ISO range has also gained a leap from 51200 to 102400. Autofocus remained the same with a 25 focus landing points working on contrast detection but the R2 gained an additional 399 points (virtual points) with phase detection. Frame per second (FPS) the R2 gained 1 more frame to 5 fps from the R’s 4fps. But probably the most welcome upgrade for the R2 will be the 5-axis in-body SteadyShot image stabilizer and as featured in all the MarkII of the Sony a7 series.

“The dynamic range at work. The R & R2 both promises good range and for those who likes to edit their photos, images from either R will promises you hours of fun.”

Other goodies that came with the R2 includes the ability to custom a minimum shutter speed and Auto ISO and it has the Continuous Eye-Focus. The R2 also came with expanded AF & Metering Sensitivity that allows 2 more minus stops, one more additional C4 button (the R has only 3) and a higher resolution EVF plus increased viewfinder magnification. For videographers, the R2 has 4K video recording now – the original R has HD only. With all that goodies, the R2 had gained a little weight over the R at 582gm which is minimal. There are more differences and upgrades from the R2 but what we had shared above were the things that matters to us.

“At the same setting, note the above images ended up with 2 different colors. The R2 gave us a more vibrant and more accurate color rendering.”

Just when we were planning how to review the Sony a7RII, we decided to bring along with us the original Sony A7R to Gardens by the Bay, Singapore which a Chrysanthemum displays are currently being exhibited. I roped in a buddy photographer and a regular guest gear reviewer Trisha Lim along for this review. Both the Sony a7R and the R2 were fitted with the same 28-70mm standard issue kit lens, same shooting settings and I shall the let photos do the talking which I had splashed across the whole article. Enjoy!

Further to the review above, I tool the Sony a7RII out for a walk, fitted with the Sony LA-EA4 along with an A-Mount 50mm lens.

From the photos taken from both the R & R2, we noted on the many improvements that was “upgraded” – and we love it! While many purists will argue that resolution is not everything, it is something when you do a lot of cropping or printing large prints. In fact, we highly recommend that all creative agencies and media houses should have the Sony a7RII as standard issue. (Just don’t quote us! :)) While the world continues to marvel over the new Sony A7SII, do not forget the Sony a7RII that is quietly selling alongside with the rest of the a7 series camera. An a7 will always be an a7.

Sony RX10 MarkII – An Impressive Imaging Package

12^th October 2015, Singapore/ Malaysia – When Sony delivered the NEW RX10 MarkII to me, I don’t really know what to expect. Many things were said all over the world and the Sony camp was raving how marvelous a bridge camera the RX10II is – so I was really excited to test out the RX10II. While half of the world was talking about the impressive 4K video from the Sony RX10II, as a photographer, what I really wanted to know is, if the camera functions and perform like a bridge camera.

As usual, I would like to disclaim that if you found your way here looking for technical specs for the Sony RX10II, please look elsewhere, we are more keen on the final output here.

Some quick notes about the new Sony RX10II, it came with an impressive zoom range of 24-200mm (full frame equivalent) at a constant wide aperture of F2.8. At this specs, the lens has to be a Zeiss supplied Vario-Sonnar T* that delivers sharp and excellent image quality that puts this RX10II above the competition against other bridge cameras. With 14 elements in 11 groups – including 7 aspherical elements – you can imagine the kind of image quality we are talking about here. However with all that glass, the camera is light & compact, (129.0 x 88.1 x 102.2 mm & 770gm) making the RX10II easy to handle and carry around. The Zeiss lens starts focusing from as close as 3cm and that allows amazing close-up shots too.

Photo: Chin Swee Temple, Genting Highlands Malaysia – The 24mm wide Zeiss lens was a joy to use. I had shot this scene many times doing other reviews but this is probably the closest I stand to get this scene. The amount of details captured is also worth complimenting!
The sensor (being everything Sony) is an Exmor RS CMOS and processed by Sony’s Bionz unit, the RX10II packs 20.2 mega-pixels which is the current trend now in the “mega-pixel war”. If you are still not impressed, well you might wish to know that the RX10II is made for performance with an insane shutter speed of 1/32000 and it has an excellent ISO range from ISO64 to ISO 25600 with built in ND filter slowing light up to 3 stops.

Using contrast detection AF, I was super impressed with this as almost all my shots from the RX10II are 100% accurately locked-on within milliseconds and I got all my shots at the moment – just the way I wanted it. The SteadyShot (anti-blur/ anti-shakes) works seamlessly allowing me to enjoy the blazing fast and quiet AF with accuracy up to 99.5%, the lens front accepts 62mm screw-on filter and along with Sony’s usual “package” of creative filters, functions and a tilt-table screen, from a photographer’s perspective, the RX10II is probably one of the most impressive bridge camera of our time. (wait till you see what other videographers had produced with the Sony RX10II).

Instead of inviting guest reviewers to do the review, I decided to have the RX10II all to myself and I took it to the streets to Singapore’s Little India and Malaysia’s Genting Highlands to put the RX10II through its paces. In summary, the Sony RX10II is an excellent camera to use for a wide variety of shooting preferences. Not only it is easy to use, the fast focusing, wide aperture lens, the excellent zoom range makes this camera an easy alternatives to other bigger cameras. The weight, the size and the ease of use will let the RX10II find its way into many camera bags for the professional photographers or any enthusiasts who wants a camera that performs like a mini DSLR. And remember, the 4K video is awesome too, just that I am not into video – but after using it for 2 weeks including a short trip, I will buy the Sony RX10II anyway – you should get one too!

Happiness Is A Place

08th October 2015, Singapore – Happiness Is A Place is the latest travel photography book compiling the BEST 150+ beautifully captured images from a 7 days of travel photography trip around Bhutan and produced by 12 photographers from 6 countries. It was the first Leica Akademie travel photography in Asia led by Michael Lee and seamlessly coordinated by Xing Asia.

While the trip was largely for photography, Xing Asia also encouraged participants to take the opportunity to give back to community. So the team brought with them school supplies for the kids and visited Dhur Primary School (DPS), a village school about 15 kilometers from Bhumtang – located on the eastern para of Bhutan. The school is only accessible through a rough and somewhat tricky one-lane dirt track but the journey is well worth the effort. We get to see many parts of Bhutan that the world don’t get to see.

There are a total of 96 students that came from far-flung villages studying at DPS. The school (DPS) is a humble one-storey building with no fancy or luxury facilities while many things visibly requires considerable repair (or replacement). After visiting DPS, everyone was touched by much effort these students and educators went for the sake of basic education, DPS found a special place in the hearts of those who visited and the experience inspired the team to want to do more for the community. So the idea is to produce a travel photography book – Happiness Is A Place.

Happiness Is A Place will be available at Leica Stores in Singapore at SGD $50.00 each – from 9th Oct 2015 onward. The photos from the book are also repro-printed on high-quality paper in coffee table format, and these prints will make an excellent conversation piece.

Lastly, we are pleased to inform everyone that ALL sales proceeds from the Book will go towards funding the DPS education & logistical requirements, which have been pre-identified and prioritized in coordination with the school Principal. More immediately, the school needs a photocopier machine and also equally important, to start building a library/multi-purpose hall.

03rd October 2015, Singapore – When Sigma Corporation announced their new 150-600mm lens in 2 guises, many photographers all over the world were debating just what Sigma is up to this time. While many argued that both new lenses were made to replace the ageing the 150-600mm, which is half correct, there are more than meets the eyes. Regular Joes will be fast to point out that the Contemporary version (C) is much lighter and cheaper, however the the Sports version is a different lens altogether. Before we get to the review photos by our 2 guest reviewers – Robin Choo & Jaeden Ng, let’s take a quick look at the general specifications. Once again, I would like to stress that if you found your way here looking for technical reviews of these lenses, then you might be disappointed as we are only more keen on how these lenses performed from a user point of view.

To ease reading, the Contemporary version will be referred to as (C) and the Sports version will be referred to as (S).

The (S) weights at about 2.1kg is slightly heavier than the (C) version at 1.8kg. Both lens featured the same high quality TSC compound that Sigma uses for all their lens barrel (body) since the Sigma Global vision but the (S) version got the weather sealing and splash proof protection. Both lenses feels solid and purposeful when handled and if you are used to hand-held shooting for super telephoto lenses, these 2 lenses will be easy for you. However for those buying super telephoto for the first time, you might want to consider buying a monopod with a good ballhead to use with these lenses.

The (C) version is slightly smaller (10cm x 26cm) while the (S) version is taller at 12cm x 29cm, which is still within my “bring-about” range without having to get another bigger bag – anyway both versions are shipped with a nice lens bag/ pouch – sling type for the (C) and shoulder strap type for the (S). Fans of front-screw filters will be happy to know that both lenses comes with screw threads and the size are easy to find – the (S) has a 105mm thread and the (C) has the 95mm. Both lenses does not rotates during zoom so it is also perfect for using CPL filters too. Not bad. Another similarity, both lenses are made as 9-bladers (aperture) and focuses from 2.6m. Glass wise, the (S) has 26 elements in 16 groups while the (C) version was made slightly more simplified with 20 elements in 14 groups.

Both lenses features Sigma’s highly proven Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) for that fast & silent focusing and the 3 modes Optical Stabilizer (OS) and both comes with limiter control switches too. Lastly, both lenses features the company’s Super Coating on the front element to prevent dust & grease and you will be glad to know that Sigma still ships their super telephoto lenses with tripod ring too. OK I shall stop here and let’s take a look at the photos that were produced by our guest reviewers Robin Choo & Jaeden Ng.

Editor AL issued me the Sports (S) version of the 150-600mm range and I took the lens everywhere and try to shoot what I would normally and usually shoot. Brought the lens out to a garden and tried shooting wildlife.”

“The lenses focuses really fast and quiet and it reminded me of Canon’s 100-400mm but much better. I got my shot everytime as the focus is almost 100% accurate and the like how the lens handles – really professional feel.”

“I also brought the lens to the Singapore Formula One night race to test the lens out. Not bad at all, the lens functioned as if it is day time and performed really well. Photos was sharp and contrasty with nice colors rendered.

Personally I like the lens build as it really feels like some other overpriced lenses and the switches are easy to reach during operation. Together with the fast & quiet focusing, this is a super telephoto lens that professionals who uses super telephoto lenses should have.”

26^th September 2015, Singapore – Following my last article on the Samyang 85mm F1.4, today I am going to write about the super popular Samyang 35mm F1.4 AS UMC. Designed and manufactured as a full frame lens, the Samyang 35mm F1.4 is not just another “cheap alternative” when compared to the pricey equivalents from other brands. Why so?

First & foremost, the lens offers razor sharp images even when open up to the widest aperture at F1.4, and the image are “+ 1” contrasty making it a perfect street photography lens, or low light night-walkabout lens, or for that wide angle portrait that you will always wanted to do. And the above, was just based on what I usually do, the possibility is endless though.

The Samyang 35mm F1.4 AS UMC is not small for a start, 110mm x 83mm is NOT small, but comes with a very manageable weight of about 700gm, just perfect for hand-held shooting and it will not give you arm sores after using. Made from the same solid alloy for the barrel, the built is study and feels like it can take some serious abuse though. The optics are not spared from any attention, the glass is arranged in 12 elements in 10 groups including aspherical glass among the elements (that explains the “AS” in the lens name) and the front element is Multi-coated for colour corrections and protection against dusts and grease (that again explains the “UMC” on the lens name).

As usual, if you found your way here looking for technical reviews of the Samyang 35mm F1.4 AS UMC, maybe you should look elsewhere, we are more interested how the final images produced by this lens. On our invitation, we invited a Street Photographer Mr. Michael Sng (Better known as Mike Syn on cyberspace) to take the Samyang 35mm F1.4 AS UMC out for a walk. Let’s hear what he has to say about this lens.

“When the Editor AL invited me to try the Samyang 35mm F1.4 AS UMC, I was thrilled. This is a lens that many had talked about especially among my street-photography friends. I took the lens out for a walk and tried shooting it on my Sony a7 series camera. As the Samyang 35mm F1.4 was designed and made as a manual focus lens, I decided to use the focus-peaking AF mode on my Sony with this lens. The focusing ring on the Samyang 35mm was super smooth and well ratio-ed so in fact it was so easy to use that I almost forgot that this was a manual-focusing lens. I got my subject in focus really quickly and surprisingly this was much easier than I thought”

“I found out later that the Samyang 35mm F1.4 was shipped with a flower-shape hood that was included in the box which is nice. I also like the minimum focusing distance, it starts focusing from about 1 feet away and I can use it for some decent close-up shots too. The Samyang 35mm was conceived as an 8-bladder (Aperture) and it gives a pretty bokeh which is creamy and smooth, a bonus to me as I can use this on my occasional wide angle image of people. It literally “pops” my subject with its well-controlled depth of field at its widest. If I had not been honest, many of my friends would have thought that I had done my shots using other expensive lenses.”

“The Samyang 35mm F1.4 accepts 77mm front screw-on filters which is very much an universal size and I can use a whole load of filters on it for landscape shots and the front does not turn during focusing this makes the use of circular polarizer filter a joy to use.”

“Personally, what I like about the Samyang 35mm F1.4 was the ease of use, easy focusing, nice creamy bokeh and its wide aperture. Given the asking price, I am shocked that I am getting superior images from this lens! After this review, I am going to buy 1 for myself and I will recommend the Samyang 35mm F1.4 to anyone who can live without the auto-focus and need a standard wide lens with a large aperture. This is the lens to buy!”

From what we have read from Michael’s user experience of the Samyang 35mm F1.4 AS UMC, and after scrutinizing the photos that he shot, I am certain that many of you out there who had tried this lens will agree with Michael. There are some websites out there who even claimed that the Samyang 35mm F1.4 is sharper than their proprietary 35mm F1.4 which I am not surprised at all. From my personal experience as a commercial photographer, we know that AF cannot be trusted 100% especially in low light or in situations that has a combination of both lighted and non-lighted scenes. This becomes even more critical when a shooting a subject that is much smaller.

14th September 2015, Singapore – I am sure many of you would have known that recently the Singapore Distributor of Samyang Lenses had sent me many Samyang lenses to my doorstep. Till today, I still think that was a really cool marketing idea keeping me and my subscribers in suspense and doing what no other lens manufacturer had ever done before. That could mean something, the new distributor Alan Photo Trading (Singapore) is doing something right and refreshing and that could also means a fresh renewed interest on this somewhat low profile lens brand.

As the brand name suggest, (and no prize for guessing) Samyang is from South Korea. Although the brand also market their lenses in different other brand names in different parts of the world, Samyang had carved out a good following in Singapore. And the recent rise in Sony’s a7 series mirrorless full frame cameras – Samyang is in the best position to take advantage of Sony’s unique “focus peaking” function. By now, most photographers in Singapore know that all Samyang lenses are manual-focusing lenses – means, there is no focusing motor inside the lens construction and you have to use your hands (or fingers) to manually focus the lens.

At first, this came as challenge to me. Being very used to auto-focusing all these years sure puts me in an awkward position. Looking at all the lenses that were issued to me, I decided to pick up the 85mm f1.4 to start off my series of Samyang reviews. To make things interesting, I roped in a professional portrait photographer to do the review together. He is none other than Mr. Ross Velantine Errol, an acclaimed professional in Singapore.

Now, many would think and will even directly compare the Samyang 85mm F1.4 to the well-known and highly-prized (or priced) Canon EF 85mm F1.2L USM or equally sharp and reasonably priced cult lens Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG. But then again, what are you comparing on? Price? Definitely, since optics are not cheap to begin with but Samyang up the ante by giving you a much sharper lens – except that you have to focus yourself.

Ross shared; “Using the focus-peaking function on my Sony a7s, I find that manual focusing was not that difficult at all. In fact, the focusing ring was smoothing and well-ratio-ed making focusing really easy and accurate. You might argue that you will rather pay more to get an auto-focusing version from other brands but hey, you are paying 4 times more and that is a lot of money. For your Canon 85mm F1.2, I can buy 4 Samyang 85mm F1.4 (and who uses F1.2 anyway?). Try to auto-focus on your AF 85mm at a spot/ scene with 50% light and 50% shadows and see how your AF lens hunt. Using the focus-peaking function, I got my shot in seconds. “

By the way, this current version of Samyang 85mm F1.4 is a MarkII and made for Full frame sensors. The lens had been redesigned and updated moving away from its “Nikon-ish” look from the 1^st generation and nothing was compromised in the construction and design of the MarkII. Designed as an 8-blader, the circular aperture produces beautiful bokehs that portrait photographers will die for. The “AS” in the lens model code stands for Samyang’s Hybrid Aspherical Glass, the “IF” stands for Internal Focusing and the “UMC” stands for Ultra Multi-Coatings.

Ross further shared that; “The lens feels expensive when handled and certainly purposeful. The solid construction of the lens barrel reminded me of a certain Zesis lenses and personally I like the focusing ring very much. Smooth, easy to focus and the ratio is just right. I got my shots easily and accurately every time and this is definitely a joy for me. (Remember I only use Auto-focus lenses until the day I got properly introduced to Samyang). The Aspherical glass promises high contrasts and sharp images and if you look at the lens group construction 9 elments in 7 groups), the aspherical glass are placed very near to the rear lens element so that it is nearer to the sensor and eliminates all ghostings from stray lights right before the light enters the sensor. Quite brilliant if you ask me.”

The lens aperture focuses from a wide F1.4 to the minimum at F22 which is pretty standard and the minimum focusing distance is about 1 meter from the subject making this lens a true blue portrait lens. A meter means you can do head shots portraits at wide open and still get a well-balanced sharp-at-the right-spot-and-soft-at-the-wrong-spots image!

Weight wise, it is very manageable at about 100gm (weight varies for various mounts) and the size is very compact at a maximum length of just 570mm (without hood). The Samyang 85mm F1.4 takes 72mm screw on filters at the front and the lens hood is provided in the retail box.

Ross’s conclusion?
“This is probably one of the best of the best portrait lens that money can buy. And for the asking price, this lens is a great value for money lens. I love it when its mounted on my Sony a7 series cameras, the sharpness at wide open is out of this world.”

I concur with what Ross had said. You won’t find another 85mm F1.4 like this – trust me.

07th September 2015, Singapore – The much-hyped-about new lens from Sigma had finally reached our shores. From what we understand, the demo unit came really late – to the point where the main shipment arrived before even the demo set. Sigma Japan, if you are reading this, please kindly improve on this. For the rest of you, I am sure you had already done tons of reading up on this new lens. As usual, if you are looking for technical details, you can read about it elsewhere, over here we are only interested if the lens can perform and lives up to the hype. (That’s why you are here isn’t it?)

My first impression of the lens is no doubt a good one. Very solidly-built and the lens feels expensive to the touch. This lens had been categorized under the “Art” series (Under Sigma’s new Global Vision) which means this is meant for professional use. The Sigma 24-35mm F2 DG HSM is not small to start with, but before you make that funny noise, please note that this is a Sigma Full Frame lens (DG for Full Frame & DC for Crop), and weights close to a kg (940gm) which is quite manageable and with a size slightly larger than my palm (12.2cm x 8.6cm), this lens fits into most camera bags easily. Why that weight? Well Sigma managed to squeeze 18 elements into 13 groups – this size & weight is considered a feat in the optical business!

Many asked me if the focal length of 24mm to a mere 35mm is useful – to which I will say that this lens is meant for wide angle use. With the 9 blade apertures that opens up to F2, this is an engineering feat – it is as good as having 2 prime lenses in 1 – 24mm F2 and a 35mm F2 plus it can zoom. Wedding portraits photographers who does wide angle portraits will love this lens. While landscape photographers who does nightscape but hates the tripod will find this lens extremely useful too.

The ergonomics handles as good as the other Sigma ART lenses and the button for AF/MF is very easy to reach with the thumb when you are switching between the modes while looking through the viewfinder. The focus ring is large and smooth scrolling while the zoom ring renders the same “feel” too. The Sigm 24-35mm F2 ART accepts 82mm screw-on filters and the lens starts focusing from as close as 28cm (Minimum focusing distance).
And yes, the F2 aperture at its widest stops down to F16 and that is pretty much what optical engineering is capable of today. If you are hoping for F22, then this lens would have started from F2.8 – makes sense to you?

Ok, now let’s take a look at the photos produced from the new Sigma 24-35mm F2 DG HSM (ART). All photos below are adjusted for the straightening, a little exposure adjustment as the haze in Singapore right now was pretty bad and with no other further adjustment. You may also click on the photo itself to view the full res size and judge for yourself. Took quite a fair bit of shots while I was out at Singapore’s Marina South Pier over the weekend.

I like how the photos “Popped” in the examples posted here. It has that “Dreamy” feel to the photos (nothing to do with the damn haze) and I love how the images turned out.
Colors were rendered to near perfection and the sharpness (when shot with aperture open wide) literally screams “Get this Lens!”.

After cropping, the photo remained sharp and very little resolution lost. I know this is because of the megapixels but do not forget it also takes a lens with good magnification ratio to allow you to crop your photos like this.

From the photos, I like what I’ve gotten from the new Sigma 24-35mm F2 ART. It is a lens like no other, images are dramatically produced and this lens will be an instant hit with all the Wedding Portraiture Photographers all over the world.

So lastly, you want to talk about the “limited focal length”? I took a series of photos below stopping at every focal length marking (24mm, 28mm, 30mm & 35mm) and to me, this is enough – if you know how to use this lens and used it correctly.

And a friend took my camera and tried a few shots at some of the fellows who was there at the outing. The result? Wide angle photos with good F2 bokehs and a dreamy & creamy feel to it. This must be the perfect wedding lens that the world had been waiting for.

I believed the photos above had spoken for itself on the new Sigma 24-35mm F2 DG HSM ART. This is lens is revolutionary and definitely a breakthrough in the digital imaging business. Someone requested that I should give a rating for this lens in my personal and professional capacity – which I rated this lens 8/10. Well yes, this is a lens that I will buy and use for my wedding portraits assignments. Go get it.

Photo: After much anticipation, the lenses arrived and the culprit is Alan Photo Trading.

14th August 2015, Singapore – After much anticipation, today I got an adrenaline rush when I came home and a box was waiting for me at my door. Finally the “AP” that many of my friends had been speculating turn out to be Alan Photo. It was truly unexpected as I seldom deal with Alan Photo to start with. (Read Part 1 & Part 2)

It was indeed a pleasant surprise and they even got my neighbors involved – looking out for my car when I return home and my neighbor quickly place the box outside my door while keeping a lookout through their window until I show up at my door.

Opening the box means more surprises – Alan Photo had sent me 06 Samyang Lenses. Excited as I am, suddenly I am hit with reality – these are manual lenses and I am an “Automatic Focus” person. A quick check on the net shows that these are excellent and value for money lenses. Well, for that, I will be back with reviews on these lenses for sure.

Meantime, let me share what lenses they had sent me.

12th August 2015, Singapore – As if the Note that I received yesterday was not enough. You can read about it here. This is getting spooky actually. The person “AP” had left another note on my door today during noon time.

“Dear AL,

THIS IS NOT A JOKE OR PRANK.

NO, NOT CONTACT LENSES, WE ARE SENDING YOU DSLR LENSES,
A SET TO BE EXACT. DUN BOTHER FINDING OUT WHO WE ARE. 🙂

This means that this person “AP” is actually on my Facebook and is monitoring what I am posting about the first note. This person even picked up some of the comments from my friends. Wow! This is getting spooky and yet at the same time, I am really wondering which brand is doing this – if it is really a camera lens brand.

Like I said somewhere among my comments, if this is a marketing stunt, it is surely working. Meantime, anxiously as I wait, I am contemplating if I should leave a note to this person on my door that I may wish to alert the Police too.

No matter what, so far this person “AP” had not done anything or committed any crime – so it is back to the waiting game and see what might show up at my doorsteps next. As promised, I will definitely update here again if “AP” strikes again.

As what I had said in my earlier article, I too, hope this is for real. 🙂

“Dear AL,

Although many had mentioned that if I am to throw away the lenses, I should throw it to them, there are some really interesting comments though.

03rd August 2015, Singapore – This is the 9th Pink Submissions by Pink Photographers Singapore (PPSG). This submission titled “Flowers of Life” – is to showcase the creativity of the photographer and to showcase the species that can be found on our tropical island. Flowers are “smiles” of mother nature and at many times, we are too busy to even appreciate or even notice these little beautiful works of nature.

We received over 500+ entries this time but sadly about 142 was rejected due to blur or irrelevant images. Other than that, that photos submitted this round are of excellent quality! (Good Job Ladies!) And it had taken the judges more than 2 weeks to finally selected all of the below as “Editor’s Picks”.

Olympus – Complimentary Gear Cleaning

05th August 2015, Singapore – To thank customers for purchasing Olympus cameras from Alan Photo, Olympus will be giving a complimentary camera and lens cleaning service on the 16th Aug from 10.30am to 1.30pm @ REC By Alan Photo (#01-08) Sim Lim Square.

As a reminder, for fuss-free experience, each customer is limited to:
1) 02 x Olympus products (eg: 1 camera body and 1 lens, or 2 lenses).
2) The lens cleaning program will only facilitate the cleaning of the
exterior of the product and do not include any servicing or maintenance
of faulty/malfunctioning products.
