The event started with AL, the Founding Member who gave a short talk on shooting Food photography and about volunteering with organizations (social enterprises) that supports the employment of ex-offenders. A low profile supporter himself, he advocates “2nd chances” for ex-offenders through many of his activities from his various associated groups.

The air time were also passed to Chef Benny SE Teo, the person who started the Eighteen Chefs franchise in Singapore. Chef Benny also shared a little about Eighteen Chefs and how he decided to start the franchise. He engaged the attendees freely to which the attendees responded positively. After the Opening, the attendees were shown AL’s works on the restaurant wall and on the digital screen at the entrance which exhibited AL’s photos when he was engaged to shoot by the franchisee to create a “fresh perspective” of the existing menu items.

Dinner commenced but strangely, no one was eating instead. Instead, cameras were heard clicking away and the attendees were trying out AL’s shooting tips and having fun with their dinner (and others’ dinner too!). METZ also provided the attendees with demo flash units to try and use. There were so much laughter and talking until the attendees were reminded to eat their dinner!

After the dinner, a special session was arranged to have an Eighteen Chefs staff to do a live demo on creating the restaurant’s popular Waffle with Ice Cream. From what we can see, everyone was enjoying and having a good time! If you had not tried the waffle from Eighteen Chef, we will suggest you check this out soon. It’s our favorite!

1/87 Photography

1/87 Photography

thisiscrisp.net
Photo taken from thisiscrisp.net

15th October 2014, Singapore – Some interesting photos had been making their rounds on social media. I am sure most of you would have seen them. All these photos were mainly tiny  1/87 scale (about 22mm) figures posed on food items or everyday scenes to create an interesting scene that is smacked right in between reality and creativity.

minimiam-food-photography-pierre-javelle-akiko-ida-5
Photo taken from thisiscrisp.net

These figures are manufactured by 3 major companies who specializes in scale models. I am not naming these 3 companies here as I am not paid to do so. The figures comes in various poses for various settings and themes so it does offers a lot of options for the photographers who are venturing into this.

minimiam-food-photography-pierre-javelle-akiko-ida-4
Photo taken from demilked.com

To start, you can go to popular online shopping sites like amazon or ebay and type “1/87 figures” on the search bar and you will be presented with all kinds of 1/87 scale figure listing. Some of these figurines are costly while some are ridiculously cheap. For example, a pair of  adult-theme figures will costs you the same for buying half a dozen of everyday figures. Some limited edition figures can costs up to a few hundreds too, so I will suggest do your research, plan your photography project carefully before you even purchase any of these.

minimiam-food-photography-pierre-javelle-akiko-ida-7
Photo taken from demilked.com

Now, how to properly create such photos? To start, I am sure you will notice the very shallow depth of field (background blur). This is intentional as to mask out whatever that is behind the scene that might make the photo weird or unnatural. So I will suggest using lenses that are F2.0 or wider to achieve the blur effect while the the camera is set to center one- spot focus properly differentiate what you want to be in focus (the figures) and what not.

minimiam-food-photography-pierre-javelle-akiko-ida-10
Photo taken from demilked.com

Now we have dealt with the shallow depth of field, next will be getting the details from the tiny 1/87 figures. You must be thinking how can that be done, well, I will suggest picking a prime lens from 50mm onwards and that allows you to focus not too far away. A macro lens will be the perfect choice since macro lenses are known for their details and their special ability to go really close to the subject to extract insane details.

minimiam-food-photography-pierre-javelle-akiko-ida-thumb640
Photo taken from demilked.com

Next, will be getting the right figures for the right subject to create that magical effect. Since these figures comes in hundreds of themes, I will personally suggest buying those which are depicted as carrying out an activity. These will be easier for you to link up subjects or for shooting placement. Once you are used to shooting such scales, then I will suggest you buying those figures which are simply posed and not engaging in activity.

Slinkachu Skateboarder

Due to the tiny scale and small size, these figures are easy to bring to anywhere you like. Although there is that slim chance of your figures going missing, it is better to carry these little guys in a match box or a tiny tin container from a mint drop. Shooting these outdoor is not easy too. You lose the control of light and easy setting of shooting indoors and you will probably be shooting in a prone position on a busy street if your camera does not have a tilt screen. But on the positive side, shooting these figures outdoors means unlocking all possibilities of shooting with these tiny figurines.

ihc_s_bucket_chipper_lg
Photo taken from 1-87vehicles.org

I am glad to share that apart from people figures, the manufacturers does produce 1/87 scale vehicles too. Similar to “people” figurines that comes in hundred of themes, 1/87 vehicles offers anything from 2 wheels to a full size Boeing A380 passenger jet complete with thousands of accessories. Combine these vehicles with “human” of matching themes, you can now create realistic scenes that are so special and unique!

APrats-GrandPrize
Photo taken from 87thscale.info

Take the Christmas scene from the above photo as an example. With a little creativity, you can create a full scene like the above with matching trees, lamp posts, snow etc together with figures & vehicles. It all depends on your creativity and what you want to achieve. My last tip here will be to pay a little more attention to the lighting as it will determined if your scene looks interesting real or just a badly done miniature shot.

Oh lastly, when making the purchase for the 1/87 figures or vehicles, make sure you are buying painted ones too. Have fun and I will be back with my own set of miniature 1/87 photos soon.

Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD (2014)

===================================

Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD (2014)
– The Mighty Tamron Has Arrived.

ALN_8692
Photo: The New Tamron 150-600mm produces sharp & crisp photo. 1/1000, F8, ISO400

03rd October 2014, Singapore – Tamron’s latest lens – the mighty SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD is set to win more fans. It is not too difficult for one to see that Tamron is taking photographers’ needs seriously, like in the case of the recent Tamron 16-300mm superzoom lens, or the earlier 24-70mm, Tamron is moving away from “the alternative lens” and re-branding itself – not by means of heavy marketing, but by using quality optics and solid lens build to reclassify itself. Anyone who has been in photography long enough will know that Tamron has come a long way. From an OEM lens manufacturer with ISO 9001 certification to launching & marketing its own lenses – and constantly updating its lens lineup, Tamron is one brand to watch.

The new SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD is the latest proof that Tamron is here to stay. Launched as the super telephoto zoom lens for the serious hobbyists or the advanced photographers, this lens is also targeting at professional photographers who needs a more manageable sized lens that are practical and produces quality images. This lens is not a huge load to start with, at 1951gm, this lens is suitable for handheld shooting without breaking your arm. I took this lens out for a day to the local bird park and and I am glad to share that my arms survived the weight of the lens without any pods.

R0012545
Photo: Yes, that’s me. And Yes, that’s the New Tamron 150-600mm.

Using this lens for an afternoon at the bird park last week was indeed a joy. Let me share why. I purposely chose an APS-C camera for this review so that I actually get 225mm to 900mm after the crop factoring on my APS-C camera sensor (or 35mm equivalent) and that allows me to shoot really “close” to the birds at the park. Birds are sensitive animal and they are particularly wary (or defensive) when someone walks near to them or within their sight. So having a super long focal range like the 600mm (900mm) actually allows me to shoot these birds from far and without having to disturb the birds or risk putting them on alert mode.

ALN_8694
Photo: The New Tamron 150-600mm rendered excellent color tones and images are contrasty. 1/800, F11, ISO640
Although many birding photographers will swear by their “F2.8”, I found the Tamron’s aperture F5-6.3 very useable and should I say, sensible. Under the typical sun, F5-6.3 is considered “bright” and it is enough to be used with today’s DSLRs which comes with better ISO performance and that sort of allow the photographer to shoot at fast speed, fast enough to freeze subjects and still creates a beautiful background blur. Many photographers will tell you that you need to have a super wide aperture to create background blur (bokeh), but many actually forgot the other way is to use the DOF, like in the case of long lenses, your distance to subject is far, you can still get nice creamy background blur – just like all the photo examples here.

ALN_8728
Photo: Check out the amount of details presented here. Shot at the longest 600mm end. 1/1000, F11, ISO800.

The 150-600mm may be a super telephoto zoom lens, but I like the fact that the minimum focusing distance is only a mere 2.7 m which essentially allows the user to double up the lens as a tele-portrait lens at the 150-200mm range. This lens is not just about covering focal range for those who are probably thinking what’s inside the lens. Tamron has a newly designed optics that comes in a whopping 20 elements in 13 groups. Featuring three units of Tamron’s “goodie” LD Glass (Low Dispersion), users can be assured of quality images free from your usual distortions and discolorations which is typical with super telephoto zoom lenses. Designed as 9-blader, the round blades creates beautiful and creamy background blur even at small apertures. And all these are incorporated nicely into a lens build size of 258mm x 106mm, a very manageable size to carry around – in your bag or in your hands.

R0012551
Photo: Hand held shooting with the new Tamron 150-600mm is easy.

Tamron’s proprietary Vibration Control (VC) works really well and fast. When I was shooting at the bird park, most of the time these lovely birds are constantly moving at varying speeds so with the lens’ built in VC, it helped a lot in reducing blur shots and I can even track-pan the subject effortlessly knowing that I am being “compensated” by the VC by about 4 stops of speed. The autofocus (AF) is noted as very fast and accurate while I was shooting with it. The focus lock-on is amazingly fast & accurate and the other point to note about this lens, it is so quiet that you can barely here the lens focusing. This is excellent especially if you are shooting a lot in nature where the slightest noise gets picked up by wild life.

   ALN_8705
Photo: 200mm. 1/800, F14, ISO400.

Since most wildlife photographers crop their photos, let’s check out the image shot the new Tamron 150-600mm after cropping. Below is a shot of a pelican whip-splashing water to cool itself down on a hot afternoon.

ALN_8730

I decided to do a 80% crop on the head.

ALN_8730a

The Red Box is what I am going to crop out. See below for the cropped image.

ALN_8730b

Not bad. At 20% of the image’s original size, I am still able to see most of the details of this pelican. Next 2 photo is based on the original photo and followed by a 50% crop.

ALN_8735
Photo: At 100%

ALN_8735a
Photo: At 50%

Apparently after cropping 50%, the image retains all the details very clearly. There is no visible distortion, CA etc which some telephoto lenses suffers so badly with. At this point, I am already sold with the new Tamron 150-600mm. On handling, the large and grippy zoom ring & focusing ring are very smooth during operation and very comfortable to hold. Most users will feel that the weight of the lens are positioned to the front lens element away from the body, this is really a clever way to make the lens feels balanced and not that heavy after you mounted it on a DSLR. The front of the lens accepts 95mm screw on filters and if you are going to put one there, the weight of the 95mm filter will add a couple more grams to it.
The barrel are made from a solid & sturdy composite material which seems to handle the outdoor heat pretty well. Holding the 150-600mm makes me feel like I am holding the Canon EF28-300mm L – yes, it is that solid!

ALN_8768
Photo: These guys are not shy, but when I am within 30 meters of their feeding pan, they all stopped feeding & looked up. I slowly held up my camera and shot this. 500mm. 1/500, F8, ISO640.

In summary, the NEW 2014 Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD is a great super telephoto zoom lens that are practical and very much affordable than its equivalents with wider apertures. As mentioned, given today’s crop of DSLRs, high ISO is no longer an issue so that actually eliminated the problem of not having enough light thus allowing the user to shoot at higher shutter speed. The lens is well-built and designed, certainly purposeful and practical. I feel that the lens can take a few levels of abuse too (giggling).  The images that were produced are excellent and rendered with very minimum distortions or ghostings while producing contrasty and photos with really nice colors.

If you are thinking to invest into your first real super telephoto zoom lens, look no further, the Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD is certainly a good buy if not, a good investment.

Ed.

Pink Submissions #03 “The Unknown” Editor’s Picks
(Special Feature & Winners Announcement)
Proudly Sponsored by Schmidt Marketing.
Pink Feature

02nd October 2014, Singapore – The “Pink Submissions” is fast catching on among the female photographers in Singapore. After 2 previous rounds of running this submission – essentially a photo-sharing initiative based on the given theme, we had gotten many new submissions from many new PINK members. And we are pleased to note that the photo standards & quality had also escalated to a different (but higher) level. When Pink Photographers Singapore (PPSG) started this, we even gotten some merchants interested and the Pink Submissions became a theme-based sharing + critique + contest at the same time. We are glad to report that we received about 50+ entries this round.

From the members’ response, I have a feeling this will go on for a long, long time. With or without a prize sponsor, Pink Submissions will go on! Following the style from our last submission, let’s hear what the Judges/ Sponsors have to say about this submission/ theme.

“We had studied closely the past 2 submissions before deciding to come in as the sponsor for the #03 submissions. We must admit that the photographers from Pink Photographers Singapore (PPSG) are very creative & resourceful people. We were very impressed with the past submissions and hope to create more fun for the members.

While we were thinking hard what theme to allocate for this round, we chanced upon a suggestion from Miss Magdalene Teo-Yong, a PPSG member/ administrator who suggested <<The Unknown>>, guess what?
We love the theme & we confirmed the theme immediately with the Editor AL.

For the judging, trust us, it’s not easy, we love almost every photo!”
– Marketing Department, Schmidt Marketing.

OK, that’s the message from our sponsor Schmidt Marketing for the #03 Submissions!
Ladies, I am so proud of all of you and I must say this. “Pink Did It Again!”

As usual, we were not able to feature every submitted photos due to photo size or for any reasons. So, I had picked out the below photos from the crop to run this feature.
Enjoy!

“The Unknown”
#03 Pink Submissions Featured Photos.

Editor’s Pick #01 – Photo by Yoong Sann
Yoong Sann
“Clever use of the interesting cloud textures & rendering in monochrome for the final delivery. tree branches and the sign that reads ‘Beware of Snakes’ completes the theme nicely. For a person to be at this place with a sky like that, yes, it is Unknown what else might be out there – excluding the snakes. Nice one.” – AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #02 – Photo by Adelene Ng
Adelene Ng1
“The night Moon is one of the favorite subject among photographers. Match the moon with any sinister looking house or over a scene does creates the feeling of fear, uncertainty and ‘the Unknown” effortlessly. Although many countries had landed on the moon today, the moon remains a mystery to scientists & astrologists. Adelene rendered her photo of the moon into monochrome which simply made the moon more mysterious and sinister.” – AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #03 – Photo by Doreen WooDoreen Woo
“A view of the Milky Way, where millions of stars formed and created this beautiful sight off our sky. Mankind had extensively studied what’s around our solar system, but the real deal is, at least 99% of the universe remains unknown to us. Using the tall grass as the foreground interest with a few trees at the back, the Milky Way (which is supposedly the main subject) now blends nicely into the frame making this image a scene rather than a solo subject photo. Simple yet Brilliant!” – AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #04 – Photo by Magdalene Teo-YongMag Teo2
” This is a ‘look-up’ shot of the Milky Way by Magdalene. On first look, we weren’t too impressed then it struck us that she had caught a shooting star in the frame. When we scrutinize the photo a 2nd and a further 3rd time, only then, we ‘got the feel’ of this photo and yes, looking up to the sky filled with millions of stars, with the Milky Way looking like the Eye of the Sky and the shooting star passing by, this combination does evokes the thought, rakes up a sense of fear yet exciting, a sight to behold. Wait, how many many of you were lucky enough to caught a shooting star?” – AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #05 – Photo by Ellis Jade Tay
Ellis Jade Tay
“This Kaleidoscopic look are commonly used by photographers for creating a rush or flying-in effect. However, many got it wrong by applying this technique everywhere. To create such a photo, the photographer must first search for a combination of lights that are strategically positioned before attempting to do this. Ellis selected a good background for this image and created an interesting image with varying lights of all shapes and sizes this is impressively different.” – AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #06 – Photo by Alyssa ChanAlyssa Chan1
“War Memorials Cemetery is a sad & peaceful place. A place where heroes were remembered and honored. If you happen to visit a memorial one day, you will notice that many tombstones were marked as ‘Un-Named’, ‘Nameless” or ‘Unknown’. For many died or disappeared without a name to them while fighting a war. This is yet another interesting translation of the theme by Alyssa Chan.” – AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #07 – Photo by Esther WongEsther Wong
“Esther took this shot in between rows of cactus. The corridor formed a path that are lined with thorns that depicts danger, Although this image was shot based on a reduced ratio, however if this scene is life size – this means if a person can actually walk through this path, indeed, no one knows where the path will leads to. It is unknown and this is unknown.”
– AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #08 & #09 – Photo by Joanna NgJoanna Ng5
“Clever use of the sun light piercing through the misty dews creating an interesting scene that makes a person think what is ahead. Definitely unknown  to anyone with a thousand possibilities. The only way to find out? Explore further.” – AL, Editor.

Joanna Ng
“Another creative scene of a corridor (by Joanna Ng) that seems to go on and takes forever to the end – if there is an end. The bright colors and the contrasty black against the bright orange color makes this scene a thinking piece. Unknown to the viewer, this scene deserves a second thought, good shot.” – AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #10, #11 & #12 – Photo by Alice Chia
Alice Chia3
“A shot of a Danbo figurine staring at a wall hole. Interesting lighting (check out the long shadow of the figurine) and yes, it is unknown to the Danbo on what lies beyond that wall hole, it is unknown. Simply perfect for the theme.” – AL, Editor.

Alice Chia4
“I believed this is a bowl that Alice used. The Danbo is hanging on to the side of the bowl with a little red line (could be depicting a live-saving line that snapped) and looking down at an imaginery infinity pool or something. Very thought-evoking shot”
– AL, Editor.

Alice Chia5
“Another Excellent shot by Alice Chia, the Danbo seen here is looking down at possibly a drain cover. The lighting makes this shot particularly mysterious and the unknown factor(s) beneath those sinister looking grilles. This shot is definitely creative & Alice’s clever use of light makes this shot very, very interesting. Excellent shot” – AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #13 – Photo by Doris AngDoris Ang
“Doris’s shot (above) had the editorial team as well as our sponsors commenting on the Unknown factor about this factor. Seen here is Mario & Luigi looking at a map and seemingly lost. They are probably so lost that it is unknown to them which way should they go next. We were hoping that the piece of pink color pos-it pad on the left bottom could be removed digitally too. We decided to feature this photo because we still love this photo. What about you?” – AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #14 & 15 – Photo by Tan Pei Wen
Peiwen
“Using the shower doors as a tool for making this shot seems very logical especially when the given theme was “The Unknown”. Look carefully at Pei Wen’s shot, it could have reminded you of some sci-fi or horror flicks that you had watched before and this fits into the theme nicely as most of the time, the Unknown is associated with fear and uncertainties. Rendering this shot into monochrome just makes this shot more scary – we love it!” – AL, Editor.

Peiwen1
“Here’s another shot by Pei Wen, a color & tighter version of the earlier photo. This shot shares the same mood and the ‘unknown’ factor of the photo above – only better! We love this shot too!” – AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #16 – Photo by Magdalene Teo-Yong
Mag Teo
“Shot at Bukit Brown Cemetery in Singapore, this is the next cemetery to go – for land redevelopment. Many statues of North Indian Singh soldiers can be seen at various tombs. These are ‘Guards” and supposedly the richer folks employs these guards to watch over their house & properties when they were alive and after their passing, these guards statues continues to guard their ‘home’. For theme “The Unknown”, it is indeed unknown to us – the living on what these ‘Guards” are really watching.” – AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #17 – Photo by Alice ChiaAlice Chia1
‘”Alice submitted this photo of a pair of cosplayers posing. Although it is unknown to us where the unknown factor was, it is further unknown to us how this photo can be related to the unknown theme except that the cosplayers were looking at an unknown photographer with an unknown look on them. I am really just kidding here. The editorial team & judges really can make out where the unknown factor was, but we like the expression on the female cosplayer’s face.” – AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #18 & #19– Photo by Fione (Wee N Soh)Wee N Soh
“If I remembered correctly, Fione shot this scene at a shopping centre along Orchard Road (Central). Using reflections, the surrounding facades, she created a scene that is interesting and mysteriously spooky. We like the dark surrounding area as it emphasize the subject nicely. We like the mood that Fione created too.” – AL, Editor.

Wee N Soh1
“People looking curiously at an oversized lighted chinese opera mask. Using slow shutter, some of the people were blurred intentionally creating motion in this photo.
However, everything else that moves, the mask remained rooted, staring blankly to everyone and anyone that went near it. Did you saw the eyes moved? Unknown.”
– AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #20– Photo by Tan Pei WenPeiwen3
“Another great work from Pei Wen, it is unknown to us what eye is this. But the subtle lighting, the monochrome rendering does makes this shot very moody and a tad spooky. We love the feel of this shot.” – AL, Editor.

Editor’s Pick #21– Photo by Sally Tan-Lee
Sally Tan-Lee
“Abandoned boats? The sky that are gloomy? Nobody in sight? There are many unknown factor here which we are trying to understand what Sally was expressing.
We decided that the ‘Unknown’ factor here is this place is quiet and lonely, creating a sense of uncertain and anticipation.” – AL, Editor.

Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 – Macro Ring Flash

===================================Joby-Flash-Clamp
===================================
Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 – Macro Ring Flash
– Featuring Dyan Tjhia.

IMG_2474
Photo: Dyan Tjhia & her camera fitted with Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 – Macro Ring Flash

30th September 2014, Singapore – Famed for their high quality flashes that are favored by professional photographers from around the world, German Flash maker METZ has an interesting flash among their product line of professional flashes – the Mecablitz 15 MS-1. This professional macro flash is unique in many ways, the MS-1 runs on a wireless macro flash system via two individually-controlled reflectors that promises the user precision illumination and a balanced light distribution which many other macro flashes struggles. Metz managed to figure out what type of light adjustments, light throw and illumination control that a macro photographer really need and use.

Another interesting point to note is, the Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 operates via wireless TTL which is controlled by the master flash mounted on the hot shoe. And this professional flash runs on just 02 AAA batteries which I will not share where the battery chamber is. It took us (pretty amazing after we found the battery chamber) a while at first to figure out how to use this flash.

We decided to invite Dyan Tjhia, an avid macro photographer as well as an award-winning sports photographer to take the Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 out for a day and below are the photos that Dyan had shot using her camera with the Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 . Let’s check out her photos below. If you searching for the specifications, it’s right below after the jump.

IMG_7748 IMG_7614 IMG_7629 IMG_7683 IMG_7694 IMG_7716

I am sure that you will agree that Dyan’s photos above were awesome. It is no wonder why the Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 (a true performer flash that) is trusted & used by professional macro photographers. Personally, I like the wireless TTL feature as I get pretty irritated by coiled cables from other macro flashes. From Dyan’s photos above, we noted on the even distribution of light, the not-so-harsh flash landed on the subject pretty gently if I must describe in easy terms.

Priced competitively, the Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 is one excellent (and interesting) macro flash to purchase. Get yours today!

Getty Images inspires Spikes Asia to kill the cliché and Re-Picture the world‏
The world’s leading digital media company launches Re-Picture photo contest and supports Asia Pacific’s emerging creative talent through continued sponsorship of Young Spikes.
Caption - Getty Images

19th September 2014, Singapore – Getty Images, the global leader in visual communication, is challenging attendees of Spikes Asia Festival of Creativity to drop stereotypes, reconsider the way they look at the world and embrace the power of imagery to shape the future.

As part of its mission to move the world through imagery, Getty Images is inspiring Spikes delegates to look beyond stereotypical images when describing people and communicating concepts, inviting creatives to ‘re-picture’ visual representations of key concepts like success, beauty, age and family.

“Social media in Asia is growing fast and as more consumers engage with brands online we’re seeing a rising demand for authenticity in imagery. At Getty Images we believe it’s time to move away from the cliché  content and embrace the world around us as it actually is – in all its variety and beauty,” said Corinne Woels, Head of Sales, Getty Images, South East Asia.

“Spikes Asia attracts the region’s top industry influencers and best emerging talent – creative leaders with the power to redefine our perception of the world. Getty Images is excited to join forces with this year’s delegates to re-picture stereotypes and inspire change.”

Delegates can explore image galleries representing re-pictured perspectives on selected themes and respond with their own ideas by using the #RePicture hashtag. In addition, Getty Images is launching a photo contest, inviting attendees to submit their interpretation of Re-Picture to win a US$200 Photos.com by Getty Images voucher.

For the third year, Getty Images is the official sponsor of the Young Spikes Competition. Taking place at the heart of the Festival, and judged by a panel of top media experts, the competition sees Asia’s best young creatives compete around the clock to create an award-winning campaign. Getty Images is the exclusive content provider for the competition, enabling participants to draw from its broad range of award-winning creative imagery to produce inspiring work of their own.

16 September 2014, SinGAPOREiStock by Getty Images, the original resource for crowd-sourced royalty-free stock images, media and design elements, today launches a series of major changes to simplify purchasing and make its premium content available to customers for even less.  The far reaching changes, which include simplified content collections, improved search and new pricing firmly position iStock as the number one place to source unique, quality content at the best price.

Breaking new ground is in iStock’s DNA. From its humble beginnings 14 years ago as a start-up in Calgary, iStock turned the image industry on its head by crowd-sourcing imagery and inventing the microstock model. Today, iStock is disrupting again, with changes that will leave no room for ambiguity or indecision about the best place to source the right content at the right price.

From today, customers will see:

•       A single price per image and video allowing customers to access the needed file size without paying more.

•       Two collections:

–      Essentials: Millions of every day images, vectors, videos and music tracks at an unbelievable price.

–      Signature:  7 million and growing premium-quality images, vectors, video and music tracks (includes premium files formerly in the Vetta™ collection) exclusively and only available from iStock at a dramatically reduced price.

•       The flexibility of two simple payment methods with subscriptions and pay-as-you-go credit packs, enabling customers to easily buy what they need for less.  Pay-as-you-go pricing is as low as $8 per high-resolution image or $48 per high definition video.  Subscription plans provide access for as low as $0.22 per image.

“Our customers have spoken. They want quality and individuality at the best possible price – and they want it from iStock by Getty Images,” said Getty Images Co-founder and CEO Jonathan Klein.

“Only iStock offers more than just commodity content. We offer Signature – exclusive images, video and vectors curated by a global team of visual and trend experts, at a price that cannot be matched. Now our customers have even better access to this unique premium content, available only from iStock and with the trusted backing of Getty Images. Creatives and other image users do not have to settle for a sea of commoditised sameness.”

Nikon Announces D750.
D750_ambience_2

The New Nikon D750 is at the Pinnacle of Innovation, Offering Performance and Maneuverability

With superior maneuverability and agility in a powerful, compact package, the revolutionary Nikon D750 is packed with features to provide photographers all they need to capture stunning images .

D750_ambience_3

12th September 2014, SINGAPORE – Nikon Singapore Pte Ltd is pleased to announce the launch of the new D750, the smallest and lightest Nikon FX-format camera*1 to deliver incredible image quality in an ideal package of enriched features. The D750 enables the freedom of photographic expression with sought-after functionalities of built-in Wi-Fi®*2, tilting monitor, 24.3 megapixels, 91K-pixel RGB sensor, and outstanding high-speed continuous shooting rate of approximately 6.5 frames per second*3 for both FX- and DX-format, all fitted into a slim and durable body.

The innovative D750 challenges the common assumption that the higher a DSLR’s specifications, the bulkier it becomes. The D750 includes revolutionary technologies designed to offer a strong, lightweight camera without compromising image quality. Its powerful FX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 image-processing engine are packed into a monocoque structure framed by carbon fiber composite material (new material*4), and magnesium alloy to provide nimble durability while producing beautiful, balanced shots. Aimed at a discerning audience, the D750 is a superior camera with similar full-scale features and performance as those in the high-end range to offer photographers the room to expand their capabilities and evolve their skills.

“With a 24.3 megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor, built in Wi-Fi®*2,cutting-edge engineering, and superior maneuverability, the D750 provides everything a photographer needs to create and share incredible images in a single device,” said Garland Mak, Deputy General Manager of International Marketing Division Imaging Group, Nikon Singapore Pte Ltd. “The D750 is synonymous with a crafted perfection of an ideal FX-format camera in its minimal weight and frame accompanied by compelling features for the closest true-to-life imaging experience.”

D750 Primary Features

1. Rich image quality paired with exceptional technology

• Stunning output quality: The 24.3 megapixel CMOS sensor combines with ISO sensitivities. An effective ISO range from 100 to 12800, also expandable from Lo 1 (ISO 50 equivalent) right up to Hi 2 (ISO 51200 equivalent), is achieved through enhanced performance of image processing to offer images with minimal noise regardless of ambient light.

• Powerful image processing: The EXPEED 4 image-processing engine delivers stunning shots, boosting image superiority over its predecessor. Enhancements include improved noise reduction performance at high ISO sensitivities, as well as upgraded depth and clarity in gradation rendering.

• Smooth, cinematic Full HD video: The D750 offers the capability to record Full HD movies in 1920×1080/60p (59.94 fps) format with minimal jaggies or moiré to offer a smooth, clear movie. A new movie shooting menu and “highlight display” function are also designed to make it easier for the videographer to achieve a refined, high-quality video regardless of environment. A multi-area mode also provides support for DX-format NIKKOR lenses, offering users flexible movie expression. Additionally, improved audio performance helps ensure the sound is as good as the image.

2. Outstanding functionality and performance for precision

• Fast, enhanced autofocus: A high-speed, highly accurate 51-point autofocus (AF) system employs a new AF sensor module that enhances low-light performance (down to -3EV), making it possible to shoot using AF in dark environments where it is impossible to focus with the naked eye. A Group-area AF mode also works to detect moving subjects with incredible accuracy, ensuring crisp, well-focused shots.

• Intuitive features: The D750 offers high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 6.5 fps*3 (in FX/DX format) with a highlight-weighted metering function that helps prevent overblown highlights. A Spot White Balance function also makes it easier to capture accurate, balanced images quickly and easily by acquiring preset manual data of white balance during a live view.

D750_ambience_6

• Clear, accurate display on a vivid wide-viewing angle monitor: It is possible to set the color balance on the clear, bright 3.2-inch monitor with a wide viewing-angle (170° horizontally or vertically), to suit the user’s preference. An Advanced Scene Recognition System that utilizes the compact 91K-pixel RGB sensor helps with focusing and metering accuracy of the subject, and an optical viewfinder with 100% frame coverage makes it easier to line up the perfect shot.

3. Incredible Flexibility

• Light, strong structure: The D750 is the first Nikon FX-format camera to adopt a monocoque structure, eliminating the rear body. The camera employs carbon fiber composite material (new material*4), for the front body and cover, and magnesium alloy for the rear and top covers to reduce weight and increase durability.

• Designed for usability: A new internal layout is optimized to allow sufficient space for enhanced maneuverability with comfortable grip ensuring secure handling while minimizing the overall size. A tri-axis hinge on the monitor tilting mechanism

also enables the screen to tilt up to approximately 90 degrees and down to 75 degrees, maintaining a rugged and lightweight design. The monitor is always positioned in the center of the camera to make it easier to compose shots, while also providing a more intuitive view to shoot from various angles.

4. Additional versatility and functionality

• Rapid uploading via Wi-Fi®: With a built-in Wi-Fi®*2, instant uploading of high-quality images to devices is enabled for an efficient workflow. The Wireless Mobile Utility application, available as a free download for the iOS and AndroidTM operating systems, enables a seamless transfer of images from the D750 to any compatible smart device of choice. The D750 also features the support for wireless image transfer with the optional Eye-Fi card.

• Double SD card slots: The D750 packs double SD memory card slots to enable “Overflow” recording, “Backup” recording, separate RAW/JPEG recording and shooting, and even copying between slots.

• Rich gradation with Picture Control: The Nikon D750 also features a new “Flat” Picture Control option to apply a more natural effect and enable the camera to acquire maximum subject information. Lost highlights and shadows or color saturation can be effectively suppressed even after image adjustment, achieving rich gradation in both brightness and color.

5. Complementary High-performance Accessories

• Powerful flash compatibility: The D750 also offers support for the Nikon Creative Lighting System, which provides a range of flexible flash and lighting options for compatible flash units to offer even more creative control in the hands of the photographer.

• Wireless remote control: The WR-1 and WR-R10/WR-T10 Wireless Remote Controllers are supported, as is the UT-1 Communication Unit and WT-5 Wireless Transmitter combined with a compact FX-format model that is ideal for a companion camera.

• Broad range of lens options: The D750, as an FX-format camera, features support for selected NIKKOR lenses and accessories, opening up a new world of creative options for enthusiast photographers.

1 Among cameras with a built-in flash and movie functions.

2 Assuming no interference; range may vary with signal strength and presence or absence of obstacles. Wireless Mobile Utility must be downloaded onto a smart device (compatible with iOS/AndroidTM) to use the Wi-Fi function. Wireless Mobile Utility can be downloaded for free from the appropriate application store. The built-in Wi-Fi feature is not compatible with Camera Control Pro 2.

3 With shooting of JPEG-format images, excludes shooting of FX-format images at an image quality setting of JPEG fine and an image size setting of Large (up to 87 shots). Value with shooting in AF-C autofocus mode, [S] or [M] mode, shutter speed of 1/250 s or faster, all other settings at their default values.

4 Sereebo®, which is manufactured by Teijin Limited. This new material, which utilizes carbon fibers, is very lightweight without sacrificing strength or durability. As this material is well suited to use on camera exteriors because its surface is incredibly smooth with no carbon fiber bosses, it is the perfect cover material for cameras with a monocoque body structure.

The Nikon D750 will be available end September 2014. The price will be available nearing sales start.

  • High-resolution still images captured by an ultra-wide-angle, 160-degree lens and approximately 14.0 effective megapixels

The WG-M1 delivers true-to-life, high-resolution still images, thanks to the combination of approximately 14.0 effective megapixels and a CMOS image sensor with outstanding high-sensitivity and low-noise characteristics and high-speed data readout.  During still-image shooting, it offers a choice of four angle-of-view settings: Wide (160 degrees),* Medium,** Narrow** and Underwater. The WG-M1 provides Full HD movie recording in the H.264 recording format, capturing high-quality, extended movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels, 16:9 proportions) at a frame rate of 30 frames per second.* Thanks to its digital shake reduction mode, the user is assured of flawless, blur-free movies, with a choice of four angle-of-view settings — Wide (approximately 137 degrees),** Medium,*** Narrow*** and Underwater. It also provides a host of creative tools to simplify complex movie-recording techniques, including “Motion detection,” which automatically starts recording a movie when the camera detects a moving object within the image field; “Loop recording,” which keeps recording movies while creating new files at five- or ten-minute intervals; “High-speed Movie,”**** which records movies specifically for slow-motion playbacks; and “Time Lapse Movie,” which produces time-compressed movies using a time-lapse recording technique. In addition, a micro-HDMI terminal (type D) is provided on the camera body for the simultaneous output of movie clips and sound to external audio-visual devices. * The maximum length of a single movie clip is 25 minutes. ** The angle of view may vary depending on the selected image size. Magnificient Malacca with Xing Asia!

===================================
Magnificient Malacca with Xing Asia!
– Featuring Terence Kwan

20140816-L1000163
Photo by Terence Kwan: Clogs are significantly Peranakan & “very Malacca” .

09th September 2014, Singapore – Listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7th July 2008, Malacca is the 3rd smallest Malaysia state (after Perlis & Penang).  Malacca is also widely known as the “Historic State” due to its history and culture mix – most prominently once colonized by Portuguese & Dutch. It is also one of the last states with a high number of Peranakans which is almost on par with Penang.

20140816-_1070241
Photo by Terence Kwan: A local man having his haircut at a traditional barber shop.

Having an interesting history also resulted in the modern Malacca we see today. Bustling with lots of activities, tourists flocks to Malacca to experience the culture, the food and the heritage. There are lots of ancient churches and buildings that are still well-preserved till today and this makes Malacca a good place to visit for photography too.

20140816-L1000261-Edit
Photo by Terence Kwan: Colorful trishaws are still very much used by the locals as well as the tourists. Many of these trishaws are elaborately decorated to attract customers. These trishaws are now an important element of Malacca adding colors to to the streets and adding to the unique flavor of Malacca.

Terence Kwan, a photographer from Singapore joined Xing Asia’s Malacca trip recently (August 2014) and came back with some really interesting photos. I bet it will be more than just nice photos that Terence brought back, from what we understand, he brought back an unforgettable experience, a complete new understanding of Malacca & lots of memories.

We took the opportunity to catch up with Terence and have him share with our readers about his trip to Malacca with Xing Asia.

Editor: Hi Terence, thank you for allowing us to interview you. I know this is a silly question but, have you been to Malacca before prior to this trip with Xing Asia?

Terence: No, this is really my first maiden trip to Malacca.

Editor: Wow! Then please share with me what made you want to sign up for Xing Asia trip travel program “Heritage Malacca”?

Terence: I was introduced to Xing Asia’s tour by a few friends of mine. They had previously traveled with Xing Asia and have nothing but only good things to say about Xing Asia. My expectations of Malacca came mostly from friends that have been there before and from what they have experienced & shared, Malacca is a place that has good food and lots of nostalgic places. So it is my ideal place for a short holiday.

Editor: I was told that this is a 2D1N weekend trip, so the program itinerary must be really packed. Please share your thoughts on the itinerary & overall tour arrangement?

Terence: The itinerary was indeed well-planned and professionally executed. During the first day, we had both day and night photo sessions at the famous Jonker Street which look and feel very different (between day & night). Jonker Street offers lots of photography opportunities, such as mosques, temples, street hawkers and even a classic barber shop!

There were so much to see, to shoot & to eat that we ended up spending quite a fair bit of time there. (giggles). After that, we visited the Malacca Island and were greeted by an awesome sunset scene with the Floating Mosque (Malacca Straits Mosque) as the subject.

20140816-L1000180
Photo by Terence Kwan: A traditional shoe-maker at work.

Editor: Wow! Sounds like you had lots of fun (& food)! So what did you do on the 2nd day?

Terence: Well, on the second day, we woke up early and had a sunrise shoot at the Portuguese Settlement followed by UNESCO World Heritage Malacca Museum Complex of St Paul Hill, The Stadthuys, A Fomasa. We covered quite a number of places in the morning before we headed out for a fantastic beef noodle for lunch. In the afternoon, we visited the Glass Temple at JB before we head back to Singapore.

Editor: That sounds really tight-scheduled! Wouldn’t that be too rush since the main objective is to do photography?

Terence: Not really. On overall, I would say the schedule was very well-planned and we were given enough time to explore all the places we visited and also enough locations to keep us (fully) occupied for the 2 full days.

Photo by Terence Kwan: Malacca Straits Mosque or Masjid Selat Melaka at twilight.

Editor: From our understanding, you are an avid photographer, how did you find the overall photography experience while traveling with Xing Asia ?

Terence: It was a great photography experience with Xing Asia. I would attribute the main credit to the tour leader, Mr Michael Lee – who is a Master Photographer. During the trip, he gave us valuable photography tips and share a lot on how to capture a better photo. Apart from that, he (Michael Lee) is one person that fully embrace the local culture and he mingles easily with the local residents to create rare photography opportunities for us. For example; While we were walking along Jonker Street, Michael spotted a classic-old-style barbershop and he went in to chat up with the shop owner. Soon, permission was granted for us to take photograph inside the shop. This factor itself is a great advantage of doing photography tours when comparing Xing Asia to other travel agents.

20140816-L1000169
Photo by Terence Kwan: A Five-Foot way scene filled with Art Pieces, Feel and Colors that made Malacca interesting & nostalgic.

Editor: That was a strong positive statement about Xing Asia! So for this trip, the main objective was photography. Did you discover new perspectives to shooting through your camera?

Terence: As I had never been to Malacca before this trip, I would think that my perspective and opportunities would be limited if I had traveled with other travel agencies.

Editor: Good, that means you had learned a lot during the trip. Was Michael really that “in touch” with Malacca?

Terence: Absolutely! Michael Lee even knows where are all the good food!

Editor: Was there an unforgettable experience/ moment that you had encounter during the trip and would like to share with us ?

Terence: The whole trip itself is an unforgettable experience that makes me want to go back to Malacca again. If I have to share one MOST unforgettable experience, it will have to be the good food that was provided throughout the journey. Absolutely deli-fantastic!
I will want to go back to Malacca with Xing Asia again – even if it is just for the food! Everything else are bonuses! (giggles)

20140816-L1000215-Edit
Photo by Terence Kwan: A moment in time.
Editor: You are making me hungry now. So how does it feel to be traveling with other photographers whom you just met at the trip? Was the atmosphere tensed?

Terence: I expected that since we are all strangers to each other, however, it turned out that everyone was cordial and friendly (with lots of jokes in between). Many of us became friends after a little warming up. Soon, everyone was sharing photography ideas and techniques like we had known each other for a long time.

Editor: That sounds like great fun with a bunch of great photographers! Tell me, will you recommend Xing Asia photography trips to your friends (be it season traveller, photographer)?

Terence: Ah, this is the question that I don’t even have to think! Absolutely is the answer!

Editor: Ok! Last question. Do you have anything to share with our readers who are photographers like yourself?

Terence: If you are a photographer, you will definitely enjoy the photography trip with Xing Asia. You will be presented with lots of (rare and fantastic) photography opportunities. If you are not a photographer, oh well, the FOOD itself is already worth the trip!

Editor: Thank You Terence for your time and allowing us to interview you! Hope to catch you eating Chicken Rice Balls at Malacca one day!

Terence: Thank you!

The Canon EOS Rebels – Special Feature

The Canon EOS Rebels – Special Feature

1st September 2014, Singapore – Most photographers would have picked up an entry-level Canon EOS DSLRs when they first started photography or when they upgraded from prosumer digital compacts. Let me take you back in time, exactly 11 years ago, during September 2003, it was a year to remember for all Canon fans. Canon launched the EOS 300D to replace the D60 (and the earlier D30).  And with the launch of the EOS 300D, Canon had opened doors to millions of photographers worldwide with its friendly asking price and the sheer compactness of this entry-level DSLR.

Before I go on, let me share a little bit of history with all of you. Canon named this camera product line (entry-level line) into various names for different markets.
– For international markets, this model series goes by a 3 digit numbering system with a “D” right behind the model number. Example “300D”, “450D” etc.
– For America, this model series are named Canon EOS Digital Rebel
– For Japan, it’s called “Canon EOS KISS Digital. The Kiss actually means Keep-It-Silent-&-Simple”
Although no one really knows why Canon named its DSLRs like this but I suspect the naming has to do with easy numbering with every future model replacement.

While I was planning the editorial contents for Sep & Oct 2014, I remember a project that I always wanted to do but didn’t get round to do it. I wanted to round up all the XXXD series cameras together with their owners and get everyone out to shoot together, interview the owners about their cameras and make it a “Rebels” outing. So I posted on our Facebook Group Page and started to look for owners of these cameras. With a little luck, I found all the cameras/ owners within 24 hours. (I excluded the smaller 4 digit series Rebels/ 1000D, 1100D & 1200D)

So an outing/ interview was planned and I had picked Chinatown as the location for our project. Singapore is currently building up momentum to the annual Mid Autumn Festival (also known as Mooncake Festival) and Chinatown will be a colorful & interesting place to shoot. After a short talk about the history of Canon DSLRs to the attendees, the group went on to shoot with their EOS Rebels. And to make the project interesting, all the participants can only use Canon’s EF-S 18-55mm of any version.

While shooting, I took the opportunity to interview the owners individually. Here, I present to you, Singapore Mid Autumn Festival by the Canon Rebels!

“Personally I like the Canon EOS 100D as it is light and compact. I can put it into my handbag even when mounted with the Canon 40mm pancake lens especially when I want to bring the camera with me to work. After work, I can go on and shoot photos without having the feeling of carrying a “brick”. My friends are amazed that I have the EOS 100D in my handbag.  Being an Canon, EOS, it can uses other EF/EF-S lenses and it is very versatile as I can mount on other zoom lenses when traveling or a macro lens when I need to do close ups. The creative mode functions (filters) makes it a fun camera to use and I love to play with the Toy Mode or miniature mode. It’s fun camera for travel & everything else!” – Lili

“I like the Rebel Series for its reliability and easy handling. The camera still produces nice image colors despite its age (11 years old), and the shutter is particularly quiet during operations. I also like the fact that the camera body is very light weighted. My only complaint is this camera (EOS 300D) takes about 2 seconds to “wake up” from standby and this makes street photography really challenging.” – Chun Heng

“Canon’s Rebel series DSLRs are great cameras. I like the sound of the shutter from my EOS 350D, it’s really unique, Further to that, this camera is really light & small, I love to carry it everywhere I go. The 8 megapixel 350D is 9 years old today and the photos taken by it still looks great! This is also one of the best DSLR to convert to a full time Infrared camera. If only the LCD screen is bigger, otherwise it would have been a perfect camera.” – Trisha.

With the new shooting menu integrated into one digital menu, this has set the path for future Rebels Series cameras to come. The camera is easy to use and understand, you won’t go wrong with a Rebel.” – Nyen Sin.

In total, we received over 60+ submissions from the ladies at PPSG and this round, the photo standards are fiercely competed and the creativity level raised to a new high.

“These are (the submitted photos) beautiful photos. Our marketing team had a pretty tough time deciding the winners. But we finally managed to pick the three that best depict the theme given by us and we liked best!” – CT, Cathay Photo.

We were not able to feature every submitted photos so the Editor had picked out the below photos from the crop to run this feature.

    Editor’s Note:
Looking at the Pentax K-S1, one cannot help but remember the Pentax K-01 that failed terribly in Singapore. Most photographers will relate the new Pentax K-S1 to its predecessor who died a prematured death. The NEW K-S1 seems to have missed out on certain design cues from the information that we have received so far. Looking at the current crop of DSLRs that are selling on the market now, the K-S1 could have done more with a swivel LCD screen, thicker hand grip and sadly, probably more new K – Mount lenses. Pentax seems to be (still) banging on its late success on offering users a multitude of colored bodies which does nothing except to match your clothes. And the new K-S1 now has LED lights that resembles those of a Transformer and the menu buttons seems to be more appropriate on a futuristic car dashboard than on a DSLR.

Seriously, we do not know what Pentax is thinking this time. And I shall comment no further until the review unit arrives here in Singapore in 3 weeks’ time. Stay tuned people.
