Nikon Announced the Nikon D4 – The DSLR for Professional.

The next-generation flagship Nikon digital-SLR camera with the ultimate in versatility and functionality

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the Nikon D4, a Nikon FX-format camera that serves as the new flagship model in Nikon’s lineup of digital-SLR cameras. Nikon will be exhibiting the D4 at the 2012 International CES, to be held Tuesday, January 10 through Friday, January 13 in Las Vegas, Nevada. This electronics exhibition is open to the public.

The D4 is equipped with a new Nikon FX-format CMOS image sensor (imaging size of 36.0 x 23.9 mm) and EXPEED 3, the latest image-processing engine specifically optimized for digital-SLR cameras, making it the next-generation flagship Nikon digital-SLR camera with the ultimate in versatility and functionality that offers superior image quality rich in detail along with excellent high-speed performance. It has an effective pixel count of 16.2-million pixels, and offers superior image quality under a broad range of lighting conditions with its image sensor supporting an incredible range of sensitivities from ISO 50 to ISO 204800.

The new 91K-pixel (approximately 91,000 pixels) RGB sensor supports the Advanced Scene Recognition System, which is able to recognize human faces even when images are framed using the optical viewfinder. In addition, the Advanced Scene Recognition System offers significant improvements in AF, AE, i-TTL flash control, and auto white balance (AWB) control accuracy. The 51 focus point AF system has been improved with faster initiation of autofocusing and the ability to detect and focus on subjects with less lighting. In addition, 11 focus points are fully functional when lenses with a maximum aperture of f/8 are used. All of this means more precise autofocusing when super-telephoto NIKKOR lenses are used with teleconverters (2.0x). The Multi-area Mode Full HD D-movie movie recording function is capable of recording full-HD movies at 30 fps, and offers three movie recording formats for selection according to recording conditions or creative intent.

What’s more, the D4 records images to memory cards faster with built-in support for high-speed, UDMA 7-compatible CompactFlash memory cards and next-generation, high-speed XQD memory cards. In addition to built-in wired LAN features, the D4 also supports high-speed image transfer via wireless LAN when the new, compact, easy-to-use Wireless Transmitter WT-5 (available separately) is connected to the camera. The D4 is also equipped with a number of new functions that support a more efficient workflow for professional photographers, including one that allows users to add IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) information to images.

Development background
In 2007, Nikon released the D3 digital-SLR camera as its flagship model equipped with the new FX-format CMOS image sensor developed by Nikon. With its new image sensor, the D3 established a new level of image quality, speed, and support for high sensitivities. In December of 2008, Nikon released the D3X with an effective pixel count of 24.5-million pixels, which enabled superior imaging performance equal to that possible with medium format cameras. In the following year, the D3S proposed new possibilities in imaging expression with its expanded range of standard sensitivities from ISO 200 to ISO 12800 and a built-in movie recording function. The superior performance of the Nikon D3 was recognized with three of the most prestigious domestic and international awards—Japan’s Camera Grand Prix Camera of the Year and Europe’s Technical Image Press Association’s (TIPA) Best D-SLR Professional and the European Imaging and Sound Association’s (EISA) Professional Camera of the Year. The D3X and D3S continued the success of the series introduced with the D3, being recognized by the camera industry for their superior performance with a number of awards of their own as well as extreme popularity with professional and advanced amateur photographers alike. In addition, the superior durability and reliability of the cameras has also been recognized by NASA, which ordered several models as-is, with no special modification, that are currently used aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Nikon based development of the flagship D4 on the basic performance achieved with the D3 series, which has led the industry in imaging expression since its release. In addition to this high level of basic performance, a number of new functions and features were added in response to the needs and demands of professional and advanced amateur photographers, resulting in this next-generation digital-SLR camera that stretches the boundaries of functionality and performance with superior versatility.

D4 primary features

  1. New Nikon FX-format CMOS image sensor
Support for an incredibly wide range of sensitivities, from ISO 50 to ISO 204800The D4 is equipped with a new Nikon FX-format CMOS image sensor (imaging size of 36.0 x 23.9 mm) developed by Nikon. The superior performance of the FX-format CMOS image sensor with its effective pixel count of 16.2-million pixels offers excellent resolution and image quality under an incredible variety of lighting conditions. Despite the increase in pixel count, the D4 reads out data faster than the D3S. The range of standard sensitivities has been expanded to ISO 100 to ISO 12800. What’s more, support for ISO 50 and additional expansion up to ISO 204800 is also possible, enabling effective shooting under a variety of lighting conditions without concern for any sacrifice in image quality.
  2. New EXPEED 3 image-processing engine with superior, high-speed processing capabilitiesThe new EXPEED 3 image-processing engine built into the D4 offers better image quality and even faster processing speeds for vivid yet faithful color reproduction, a broader dynamic range, and rich expression of tones. It also effectively suppresses noise with advanced noise-reduction processing for images captured at high sensitivities under dim lighting, all while preserving definition and sharpness. Noise-reduction processing designed especially for movies maintains crisp, clear outlines in movies recorded in low-light situations. EXPEED 3 has high-speed processing capabilities for a variety of task, and it uses power effectively, contributing greatly to the camera’s power-saving design.
  3. 91K-pixel RGB sensor for the more accurate Advanced Scene Recognition SystemThe D4 is equipped with the Advanced Scene Recognition System, which supports face recognition* when images are framed using the optical viewfinder. The new 91K-pixel (approximately 91,000 pixels) RGB sensor recognizes human faces for more frequent focus acquisition on human faces when Auto-area AF AF-area mode is used. When a human face is detected in the frame, 3D Color Matrix Metering III bases exposure control on the brightness of that face so that the face is optimally exposed even with backlighting. In addition, the high resolution of the metering sensor with its roughly 91,000 pixels enables extremely precise analysis of the scene for more accurate control over autofocusing, auto exposure, i-TTL flash control, and auto white balance.
    • *There is no display in the viewfinder that shows when a face or faces have been recognized.
  4. Faster and more accurate AF with 51 focus pointsThe 51 focus point AF system built into the D4 utilizes the new Advanced Multi-CAM 3500FX autofocus sensor module for faster, more accurate autofocusing that performs extremely well under dim lighting.
The 15 focus points at the center of the frame are cross-type sensors that detect phase differences both horizontally and vertically. All 51 focus points are fully functional when lenses with a maximum aperture of up to f/5.6 are used, and the cross-type sensors make the most of this capability. Precise focus can be quickly acquired with autofocusing using all AF NIKKOR lenses, even under lighting as dim as −2 EV (ISO 100, 20°C/68°F), the level at which the scene through the viewfinder can just be made out by the human eye. What’s more, 11 focus points (five at center with an additional three to each side) are fully functional when lenses with a maximum aperture of f/8 are used. This enables very precise focus acquisition with sports photography and the like when super-telephoto NIKKOR lenses are used with a teleconverter (2.0x) at a combined aperture value of f/8.
In addition, adoption of a new algorithm enables faster autofocus initiation for even more certain and sharper capture of defining moments especially necessary when shooting sports scenes. The new high-speed AF system also supports high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 10 fps* in FX format with AF and AE tracking.

    • *Measured according to CIPA guidelines. Value with shooting in AF-C autofocus mode, [S] or [M] exposure mode, shutter speed of 1/250 s or faster, all other settings at their default values.
  5. Multi-area Mode Full HD D-movie with three image area optionsA dedicated movie-record button has been positioned near the shutter-release button for smooth starting and stopping of movie recording with a feel similar to that of still-image shooting. Full-HD movie recording at a frame size of 1920 x 1080 and frame rate of 30 fps is supported, and the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video compression method has been adopted. Movies up to 29 minutes 59 seconds*1 can be recorded. Image sensor sensitivity begins at ISO 200 and can be expanded to the same ISO 204800 equivalent possible with still-image shooting.
Full-HD movies can be recorded with the D4 using one of three image areas: FX-based movie format*2, DX-based movie format, or 1920 x 1080; 30 fps/25 fps/24 fps crop. FX-based movie format makes full use of the large image sensor, enabling movies with an emphasis on pleasing blur characteristics. When a DX lens is attached, DX-based format is automatically selected. This format is useful for creating an extension to the local length of an existing lens. For an even stronger telephoto effect, the 1920 x 1080 crop format brings an approximately 2.7x crop of the picture angle while delivering outstanding video quality and detail, obtaining 1080p Full HD. By choosing the movie format appropriate for the particular scene, the three image area options available with a single camera enable more flexible imaging expression through collaboration with the entire NIKKOR lens lineup, including DX lenses.
The D4 is equipped with a connector for external microphones that enables stereo recording. The camera also offers a headphone connector that supports stereo headphones, convenient for checking sound recorded with movies.

    • *120 min. depending on frame size/rate and movie quality settings.
    • *2Movies are recorded with an aspect ratio of 16: 9 regardless of the format selected. Aspect ratio is 3 : 2 with recording at a frame size/rate of 640 x 424; 30 fps and 640 x 424; 25 fps.
  6. Smooth workflow from initial setup to image transferThe entire photographic workflow is faster with the D4. Superior, high-speed response with a power-up time of approximately 0.12 s*1 and a release time lag of roughly 0.042 s*1. In addition, support for high-speed, next-generation XQD memory cards enables a continuous shooting frame rate of 10 fps for up to approximately 100 shots even with shooting in RAW format*2. The camera is also equipped with dual memory card slots, one for XQD memory cards and one for CompactFlash memory cards, for smooth handling of images. What’s more, professional photographers can work much faster with high-speed transfer of images to a computer when an XQD memory card reader supporting SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0)*3 is used.
    • *1Measured according to CIPA guidelines
    • *2When a Sony XQD memory card H-series (QD-H16G, QD-H32) is used with capture of compressed 12-bit NEF (RAW) images (based on Nikon testing standards)
    • *3Sony MRW-E80 (based on Sony testing standards)
    • The new compact Wireless Transmitter WT-5 with simple connection to the camera (available separately)

The D4 is equipped with an Ethernet port and functions for wired LAN connections. In addition, it also supports the new WT-5 (available separately), a compact wireless transmitter that is easily connected to the camera for high-speed transfer of images over a wireless network.* The D4 is also equipped with a number of new functions that support a more efficient workflow for professional photographers, including one that allows users to add IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) information to images.
The new WT-5 is powered by the camera, making a more compact size possible. In addition to IEEE 802.11a/b/g standards, the WT-5 also supports the new IEEE 802.11n (1 x 1) standard, enabling data transfer at twice the speed possible with the WT-4. The camera’s HTTP server mode can be used to display a list of images stored on the memory card, and also enables basic camera control, live view, movie recording, etc. using the Web browser on a computer or smartphone. Synchronized release (WT-5 only) mode enables synchronized shutter release of up to 10 cameras D4 cameras, each with its own WT-5) with the D4 used as the controlling “master”.

eBay Beware – Online Cheat “dzone2-au”.

This is part 2.

I have created a new Category on this site for online cheats, so do check back often for updates and be protected. Especially Sellers from eBay.

Online Cheat Profile 2:
eBay Seller ID: “dzone2-au”.
Real Name: No Individual Name (Online Shop)
Company Name: DZONE HONG KONG LIMITED
Seller email: payment@dzone2.com
Claimed Location: Hong Kong.
Telephont: +852 35202217

Case:
A fellow photographer “Ray” (name changed to protect the identity of the photographer), approached me to help him buy a Sony DSLR Lens off eBay. He sent me a link to the item and I found the eBay shop familiar. Then I remembered that I had bought things from this eBay shop before with no bad experience. So I went ahead and collected the money from Ray and made the purchase. Then things started going wrong.

First, I find it weird that the lens was not shipped after 4 days, so I wrote to the seller. The seller replied me and told me that they have not received my payment. In panic, I log in to my PayPal account and check – I had Paid! So I called PayPal to verify, they confirmed my payment had reached the seller. OK, so I called “dzone2-au” in Hong Kong and told them about my conversation with PayPal, but they insisted that they have not received my payment and will not ship the lens. I insisted that they check with the Hong Kong eBay/PayPal office why this is so and they did. After 2 days, they finally told me payment cleared. Fine, so I presumed everything is in order again.

Then I found replies in my eBay message box from Dzone2-au saying there was no stock. Seriously? I called and make my stand again and they found a lens and promised to ship out ASAP. And they did. But.

When the lens arrived, I brought the parcel to Ray’s house and let him open by himself. On closer inspection, Ray found scratches on the outer filter ring that looks like the lens had been dragged over a rough surface and there were scratches on the lens cap and on the barrel too. This came as a shock to both of us. Dzone2-au is supposed to be a reputable eBay shop and a good seller, but receiving this new Sony lens in this state is really unbelievable. So I wrote to them with Ray in the copy. Then the person who helped me sort out the payment mess told us that the shipping and packing was handled by another of his colleague and referred us to him.

Patiently, we wrote to this person, and took photos of the defects on the new lens and they stopped replying after we had sent them the photos. Even if they offer a refund and ship the defective lens back (at our costs), we had incur losses on time, trunk calls and return shipping. In the first place, why don’t they even check the condition of the item before packing and shipping? I round it up as this eBay shop is simply just irresponsible.

Will you buy from this eBay seller? Yes, their price is cheap by any standards – but, do remember that if they send you a cosmetically defective lens to you (like in our case), are you willing to pay the return shipping?

You decide.

eBay Beware – Online Cheat “jhlny2002”.

For those who frequent my Facebook will know that I buy a lot of photography stuff off eBay. From lenses to cameras, from cleaning kit to filters, in 2011, I clocked a total spending of over SGD $10k. However, not all purchases are for myself, I have started to help my fellow photographer friends and my photography students to buy stuff too. The savings are too good to miss it than buying off the shelves in local camera shop unless it’s urgently in need.

Like all online portals, all the users on eBay are real people; they are differentiated into good or bad. In my experience of buying off eBay sellers, I met my share of “Cheats” or irresponsible people or worse, bogus sellers who will trick you into paying for an auction item but the item never arrived. And seriously, eBay & PayPal is not really helpful when you get cheated. Don’t believe? Try to contact an eBay representative by phone.

I wrote this article to warn the local Photography Circle in Singapore about some really bad & irresponsible sellers on eBay.

Online Cheat Profile 1:
eBay Seller ID: “jhlny2002”.
Real Name: Joon Lee
Seller email: jhlny2002@yahoo.co.kr
Claimed Location: USA.

Case:
I bought a Nikon AF Nikkor 70-210mm F4-5.6 from this seller “jhlny2002” on 04th July 2010. I was given a USPS tracking number LJ262998848US for tracing the parcel. The mail type was “First-Class International Mail”. After 30 days, I didn’t receive the parcel so I contacted the seller and the seller replied me & told me it will take some time. Fine, so I waited. By the 50th day, I wrote to the seller again and this irresponsible seller just ignored my messages & emails. The tracking number given was traced to a parcel on http://www.track-trace.com/ which left the country of origin on 6th July 2010 and no further updates after that..

I tried to contact USPS several times and I was asked for the receipt number. So I wrote back to this seller again and requested for assistance as it will be much easier for him to contact his local USPS office since he is the person who ships out the parcel and he has the receipt. However, this seller continues to ignore me and refused to assist me. All my attempts to contact USPS failed as they do not has a direct number for you to call from outside USA and their online HELP all requires the Receipt Number which this Seller refuse to give or even respond to my correspondence.

I decided to call eBay and report the Seller & highlight this incident to PayPal as well. By then, it’s already the 75th day then I realized eBay has this 45 Days policy which any transaction that has been completed after 45 Days, they will not do anything. So I guess this Seller must be aware of this policy and decided to make off with the money I paid for this lens. He claimed he had shipped, well, if he really did, he will assist and reply, however, fellow photographers suggested that this seller can just post a bogus item on eBay to sell, after receiving payment, then ship something really cheap like a Pencil to another fake address and gave the buyer a tracking number and the delivery will never be completed.

Today, as I write, more than 180 days had passed and my lens never arrives.
So beware of this seller “jhlny2002”.

Never buy anything from this Seller or end up high & dry like me.

M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 EZ

4.2X motorized zoom lens with 24mm (35mm equivalent) wide angle capability and Micro Four Thirds System standard compatibility (12-50mm equivalent to 24-100mm of 35mm equivalent)

Olympus Imaging Corporation (President: Shuichi Takayama) is pleased to announce the release of the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 EZ, a Micro Four Thirds System standard-compliant zoom lens featuring a motorized zoom mechanism with zoom ratio of 4.2X starting from a wide angle of 24mm (35mm camera equivalent).

This zoom lens has a zoom ratio of approximately 4.2X, covering a range that extends from a wide angle of 24mm (35mm camera equivalent) – ideal for taking wide shots even indoors – to a medium telephoto focal length of 100mm (35mm camera equivalent), which is optimal for portraits. It is the first Olympus interchangeable lens to incorporate a motorized zoom mechanism, which is especially useful in movie shooting thanks to the smooth, quiet zooming it makes possible. The AF system is based on the MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism enhanced by a newly developed linear motor drive that enables faster, quieter focusing.

To assure the best possible image quality, this sophisticated lens comprises 9 lens groups with 10 elements, including three aspherical elements. Special glass materials are used extensively to correct various aberrations and all lens surfaces are multi-coated to ensure high transmittance and clear imaging performance.

The lens also features a macro mode for close-up shooting with a closest focusing distance of 0.2 meters and maximum image magnification of 0.72X (35mm camera equivalent). In addition, an L-Fn (Lens Function) button is also provided to allow the user to stop autofocusing temporarily.

Finally, as befits a lens designed for the highly mobile Micro Four Thirds System, this new lens employs the proven dust-/splash-proof mechanism originally featured in the ZUIKO DIGITAL SHG (Super High Grade) series lenses. The result is a versatile zoom lens usable in the toughest conditions and capable of everything from close-up wide angle shooting to medium range telephoto shooting of both still images and movies. The launch of the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 EZ is scheduled for the end January, 2012.

Main Features Details

1. 4.2X (approx.) zoom starting from a wide angle of 24mm (35mm camera equivalent) – ideal for wide shots even indoors
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 EZ is a zoom lens with a zoom ratio of approximately 4.2X, covering a range that extends from a wide angle of 24mm (35mm camera equivalent) – ideal for taking wide shots even indoors – to a medium telephoto focal length of 100mm (35mm camera equivalent), which is optimal for portraits.

To enable a wide 84-degree angle of view to be captured at 24mm wide-angle, this zoom lens uses a DSA (Dual Super Aspherical) element that requires high-precision manufacturing because of the extremely large ratio between the thickness of the lens center and periphery, as well as double-sided aspherical elements located at an intermediate position between the lenses to correct spherical and comatic aberrations that can accompany changes in the zoom ratio. In addition, an HR (High Refractive index) element and ED (Extra-low Dispersion) element are combined for optimum correction of color aberrations.

Thanks to the extensive use of special glass materials, the 9-group, 10-element lens construction of the zoom lens ensures high imaging performance throughout the zooming range. In addition, all lens surfaces are multi-coated to ensure high transmittance and clear imaging performance even under unfavourable conditions such as shooting against light.
The use of an inner zooming system means that there is no variation in overall lens length during zooming, ensuring that stability can be maintained during handheld shooting.

2. Motorized zoom mechanism for stable zooming at a constant rate
This zoom lens is our first interchangeable lens to use a motorized zoom mechanism. This mechanism enables smooth, quiet, stable zooming at a constant rate, which is especially convenient for movie shooting.
This mechanism drives the zoom lens at one of three selectable speeds and allows the user to control zooming as desired, including slow zooming during movie shooting, detailed composition setting, and quick zooming when required.
Manual zooming is also available, allowing the user to take full control over zooming if desired.

3. MSC mechanism enhanced by linear motor drive for faster, quieter AF control
Developed independently by Olympus, the MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism features advanced optical design technology developed for fast, quiet focusing. The new M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 EZ enhances the MSC mechanism by a new linear motor drive. Driving the coil linearly with a direct electromagnetic force without using a gear that would produce noise, the new lens can drive autofocusing with swift start-up and faster, quieter and smoother operation. The smooth autofocusing enables comfortable, stress-free shooting with both movies and still images.

4. Convenient features including macro mode for close-up shooting at 0.72X magnification (35mm camera equivalent) and the L-Fn (Lens Function) button with focus stop function
The macro mode can be set by pushing the zoom ring forward, while depressing the macro button on the side of the lens. In this mode, focusing is possible between 50 and 20 cm for close-up shooting with a maximum image magnification of 0.72X (35mm camera equivalent). Another new feature is the L-Fn (Lens Function) button, which can activate the focus stop function that stops the autofocusing operation temporarily. This makes it possible to avoid unintended focusing on an obstacle that may appear suddenly between the camera and the subject.

5. Dust/splash-proof mechanism
Already proven with the SHG (Super High Grade)/HG (High Grade) series of ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses, our highly reliable dust/splash-proof mechanism is now incorporated for the first time in a product compliant with the Micro Four Thirds System. This mechanism uses multiple sealing rings fitted in key positions of the lens to prevent water splashes and dust from penetrating the lens.

See the world in 20.3 Megapixels.

Reality never looked so real 20.3MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
Samsung has customised the new, 20.3 megapixels APS-C CMOS Sensor to perfectly complement the mirrorless lens system of the Samsung NX200, a feature typically found only in DSLRs. The professional-grade sensor ensures that each individual pixel receives more light. The resulting images are amazingly true to life, with rich, brilliant colours. The sensor also captures Full HD video that maintains higher definition and clarity than ever before.

A camera that’s quick on the draw. High Speed Capture (7fps) and ultra fast AutoFocus (100ms).
Picture perfect moments don’t last long enough. The Samsung NX200’s High Speed Capture capabilities enable you to capture fast moving objects at a sequential rate of 7fps at full resolution, allowing you to capture every movement in incredible detail. An all-new autofocus algorithm, delivers accurate, instantaneous (100ms) autofocus allowing to capture every memory however quickly it happens

See more in lower light  – Wide range ISO (100 ~ 12800)
The right exposure can make the difference between a stunning photo and a forgettable one. But some lighting conditions call for greater sensitivity than most cameras allow. The NX200 lets you shoot as high as 12800 ISO at normal settings. Even in low light, you can take high-speed photos with minimal noise or blurring. When needed, the range can be expanded further so you can maximise the potential of any light available, capturing natural-looking images even indoors or at night.

Discover the true beauty of Full HD video 1080 30p Full HD Movie (H.264)
The NX200’s uncompromising performance isn’t limited to still images. The camera’s 1080 30p Full HD recording capabilities let you create professional-looking videos, and the built-in stereo mic make them sound professional too. An 18 – 200mm lens exclusively for Full HD video produces smooth, dynamic movies with wide zoom capability. When you’re ready for showtime, an HDMI interface lets you transmit your vision straight to the big screen.

Picture performance that meets its design
The sleekly designed NX200 puts the power of a professional-grade camera in the palm of your hand. Every function was designed for easy access and instinctive use. Packing a genuine DSLR-sized sensor and interchangeable lens system into a lightweight, compact body, the NX200 is the ultimate high-performance camera you can carry in your pocket.

Take full control of your pictures i-Function 2.0
The NX200 makes it easy to create spectacular images on the move. Samsung’s unique i-function technology allows you to manually control image capture settings by touching the i-function button on the lens and change the values within this settings with the lens value ring. This allows you to adjust your photo without having to take your eye off the subject and ensure that you capture the perfect shot every time. Updated i-function 2.0 also allows you to customise which settings you can control via the i-function button, so you can make the camera work perfectly with your photography style.

Bring the magic back into your photos and videos
Magic mode (Smart Filter + Magic Frame )
The NX200’s Magic Mode gives you control over special moods and effects that expand your creative palette. Your choice of 10 types of Smart Filters and 12 types of Magic Frames help you create poster-quality visuals without all the work. New special effects include Soft Focus for a warm ambience and Half-Tone Dot for a comic-book look.

3” VGA AMOLED Display
The NX200’s thin and light 3” VGA AMOLED display provides darker blacks and more vibrant colours than a conventional TFT-LCD display, even in direct sunlight. It also responds 3000 times faster, so your images appear almost as quickly as you shoot them, freeing you to move on to the next shot.

Panorama, 3D Panorama, Action Panorama
The NX200’s panoramic capabilities let you capture vast landscapes and dramatic vertical shots at the touch of a button. 3D panorama makes these shots even more impressive by making certain elements jump out of the photo. Action panorama, unique to Samsung, allows you to also capture movement along a sweeping panorama. The background will remain a seamless panoramic shot but will capture the moving object at several stages along its journey, ideal for capturing your child’s race at their first sports day.

DRIMIII DSP (Digital Signal Processor)
One key to the NX200’s stunning images and Full HD video is its advanced image processor. Supporting a sensitivity range of ISO 100 – 12800, DRIM DSP instantly recognises and reduces noise and distortion. That means you don’t need perfect circumstances to get perfect results.

Smart Panel
Advanced capabilities don’t mean much if you can’t find them. The NX200’s user-friendly Smart Panel puts all the most important controls at your fingertips. Accessible by hot key, the intuitive graphical interface ensures that you won’t miss a great shot while you’re fiddling with settings. There is also a hot key to take you directly to movie recording at the touch of a button.

Christmas Shopping for a Photographer Friend?

It’s the Christmas season again and I received quite a number of emails from readers who asked me what do I recommend to buy as a Christmas Gift for their photographer friends? Although everyone has different budgets as well as needs, I have decided to compile this list for “general purpose” as well as to be an unofficial guide to what might be the best Christmas Gift for your friends who is interested in photography. The below list is not targeted at any genre of photographers, but on a very generic basis. And the items listed may not be original but from 3rd party manufacturerers. Here we go!

For those with budget SGD $10 & Below.
Accessories seems to be the best choice here as most photographers spent a loads of money on accessories – without even knowing that they had spent so much as these items are usually quite cheap to buy but have to buy often.
I will suggest things like hotshoe covers, lens caps, filter pouch, remote switches, DSLR rain cover, SD/CF Card holders & even battery covers will be nice & thoughtful.

For those with budget SGD $50 & Below.
Well, you have slightly more budget and probably the photographer have been a great pal, for $50, you can pick up things like macro extension tubes, filters, lens pouch, camera straps, spare batteries, lens hood etc. These are “perishables” as filters gets scratched, straps get worn out and hoods gets lost, so these items will be good as gifts too!

For those with budget SGD $100 & Below.
Now, with this money, you have more options naturally. For SGD $100, you can pick up a used lens from a dealer, get a flash, a battery grip, a small camera bag, a tripod ballhead or even a film SLR! Be creative, find out what your friend really need for this budget segment then shop around before committing the purchase.

For those with budget SGD $500 & Below.
This is an interesting category. For SGD $500, there are many many things that is within reach. You can opt for a good tripod with head, a used DSLR, some 3rd party lenses, vintage cameras, a supply load of films, filter sets, a good prosumer point-&-shoot camera, a good backpack or even a photo-editing software! There are a lot more of things that is good & relevant too, my advice again will be to subtlely find out what your friend has in mind before buying. SGD $500 is lots of money these days.

For those with budget SGD $1,000 & Below.
This shall be the “Cap” for this article. For those really well-to-do people who feel like spending a bit more to help boost the ailing economy, at SGD $1,000 buget, you can consider lots of entry level DSLRs (probably for the friend who wish to have a back up body or another leisure camera), many good wide-angle or good zoom lenses are within reach, that top of the line ETTL/iTTL/Macro flash, or those “out-of-reach” vintage cameras at the dealers! There are simply a long list of things that you can buy for your friend at this budget, just make sure what you are buying are also what your friend needs.

Now, what about those people who do not have a budget constraint?
For this group of eilites, I will suggest getting the Canon 1DX or Nikon D3S (Nikon D4 belongs to the next Christmas) coupled with a few lenses like 12-24mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm all in F2.8 and maybe add a Fisheye or a Tilt-Shifter to the arsenal too.
:)~

Merry Christmas 2011 to all my Photographer Friends from Singapore & All over the World!

TOKYO, November 2011— Canon Inc. today announced that the company is developing a new-concept EOS-series digital single-lens reflex (SLR) camera. Incorporating an enhanced version of the video-capture capability offered in the current EOS-series lineup, the new camera will be ideally suited for cinematographic and other digital high-resolution production applications. The model will be equipped with a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor and, enabling the recording of 4K video* (at a frame rate of 24P, with Motion-JPEG compression), will make possible the type of exceptional image quality and sublime imaging expression to be expected from the next generation of “EOS Movies.”

EOS Movie: A New Industry Standard

Movie recording has been a standard feature in all newly introduced Canon EOS-series digital SLR cameras since the launch of the EOS 5D Mark II in November 2008. Coupled with the diverse array of lenses in Canon’s current interchangeable EF lens lineup, this feature has heralded rich visual expressive possibilities, delivering such characteristics as beautiful image blur and low noise while also garnering kudos for the mobility and maneuverability made possible through the cameras’ compact and lightweight body designs.

The impressive images created by the combination of Canon EOS digital SLR cameras and EF lenses, known as “EOS Movies,” have already earned their screen credentials on the sets of multiple productions, from television commercials and artist promotion videos to episodic dramas and even major motion pictures.
