Nikon proudly introduces the Nikon 1 brand

TOKYO-Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce its new Nikon 1 brand, an Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lens that proposes new forms of imaging expression and enjoyment.
The new Nikon 1 brand joins existing Nikon D-series digital-SLR cameras and the COOLPIX brand of compact digital cameras as the third brand in Nikon’s digital camera arsenal.

Brand Concept

With the spread of digital cameras and advances in optical, digital and communications technologies, actions such as shooting, seeing, choosing, sending and sharing photos are becoming as common as having a conversation. Photos themselves let you feel the emotion and passion felt by the photographer. Photos have become a global language that transcends borders, playing an important role as a new communication tool for people.

Looking into the future, as a long-time developer of cameras and lenses, Nikon wanted to create an essential communication tool that will lead the era powered by their brand concept, “Don’t miss the special moment within a moment.” Inspired by this belief, Nikon fused engineering technology with cutting edge digital technology, to create a new digital camera system, “Nikon 1.” This innovative camera allows anyone to carry it effortlessly, capturing special moments without fail, and turn their casual moments into high quality, instantly shareable memories.

Nikon 1 Naming

Nikon 1 is an innovative digital camera system that significantly alters common conception regarding digital camera imaging expression and incorporates functions that offer high added value. The name for this new system, Nikon 1, came from the idea of developing a completely new camera system that would be a leader in the digital age by starting from nothing, or “0”, and giving birth to “1”.

Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lens

“Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lens” is the name of the new Nikon 1 digital camera system category of cameras. Nikon’s Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lens are not only compact, lightweight cameras fully loaded with Nikon camera and NIKKOR lens technologies, but are also cameras that embody the thrill of new imaging experiences by combining still image and movie recording and supporting many methods for sharing photos and movies to suit the needs and preferences of this new digital age.
The new Nikon 1 brand of cameras falls into a category that Nikon calls “a Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lens”. Among the many meanings included in this name is the implication of the creation of a new range of possibilities that is not available with current imaging culture through differences in camera mechanisms and form that exclude them from existing camera categories.

Nikon will celebrate its 95th anniversary next year, and is extremely proud of its record of having utilized its optical technologies in the development of many innovative products over nearly a century. So that we may continue our role as a leading company in the imaging industry in this age when digital technologies have become so common, Nikon looks forward to proposing new forms of imaging enjoyment and value over the next century as well. The first step in this process will be the development and expansion of Nikon 1 cameras, a new type of camera that creates new imaging possibilities never before considered with conventional compact digital cameras or digital-SLR cameras.

Canon’s Latest PowerShot Cameras Set New Standards For Image Capture

New PowerShot SX150 IS and ELPH Cameras Showcase Extraordinary Image Quality with Every Shot

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y. – Today’s tech-savvy consumers expect to have a photo-capturing device always at hand that is adept at producing exquisite images and video without sacrificing quality. Delivering these users’ must-haves, Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging, announced three new PowerShot Digital cameras that capture beautiful still images and great high-definition video: the PowerShot SX150 IS, the PowerShot ELPH 510 HS (the world’s thinnest digital camera with 12x optical zoom and a 28mm wide-angle lens1) and the PowerShot ELPH 310 HS. Built to handle a wide range of shooting situations with ease and accuracy, each camera is equipped with features such as impressive zoom, a new Intelligent Image Stabilization (IS) system, Smart AUTO with 32 shooting scenes, High-Speed Burst mode and HD video capture. The ELPH 510 HS and ELPH 310 HS Digital cameras also include Canon’s renowned HS SYSTEM to handle shooting in low light.

“With a strong reputation of imaging excellence, Canon incorporates acclaimed quality, design innovation and intuitive engineering into each product,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies and Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “With the inclusion of advanced features, such as the HS SYSTEM and HD video in these new PowerShot cameras, we continue to reach new levels of performance and design to satisfy our users.”

Key Features:
Small Cameras, Big Zoom

The impressive zoom with optical image stabilization found in all three new PowerShot models allows users to snap a memorable, highly detailed shot from a variety of distances. The PowerShot SX150 IS Digital camera is equipped with a 12x wide-angle optical zoom and 28mm lens. In the compact ELPH series, the PowerShot ELPH 510 HS is the thinnest camera to date, with a 12x optical zoom and 28mm wide-angle lens, while the PowerShot ELPH 310 HS has an 8x optical zoom with 28mm wide-angle lens.

Increase Camera Intelligence

Helping to capture blur-free images and video, Canon introduces the new Intelligent IS system in these PowerShot models. To deliver crisp, undistorted images in various shooting conditions, Intelligent IS automatically chooses from six different modes (Normal, Macro, Panning Dynamic, Powered and Tripod) to optimize image stabilization.

Many novice photographers are intimidated when adjusting camera settings. Canon eliminates this issue with its Smart AUTO feature, which analyzes faces, brightness, colors, distance and movement and selects the appropriate setting based on 32 predefined shooting scenes for stills and 21 scenes for video.

Shoot Better in Low Light

Low light photography is a challenge even for a seasoned photographer. To assist the user, the PowerShot ELPH 510 HS and ELPH 310 HS utilizes Canon’s HS SYSTEM that combines a 12.1-megapixel, high-sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 Image Processor to enhance image quality in low-light settings. The HS SYSTEM also reduces noise at high ISO speeds and expands the camera’s dynamic range to allow for greater detail and color when shooting in darker settings. The HS SYSTEM can also help compensate in situations where a flash can’t be used, such as a wedding or dance recital.

Never Miss the Action

Determining the right moment to “freeze” what you are shooting can be difficult in action scenes. The High-Speed Burst mode in the PowerShot ELPH models ensures that you never miss out on the fast-moving or unpredictable moments. With the simple hold of the shutter button, the High-Speed Burst mode shoots continuously, capturing up to 7.8 frames per second (fps) in the PowerShot ELPH 510 HS and 8.7 fps in the PowerShot ELPH 310 HS.

Elevate Video to High Definition

Today, the ability to switch between shooting still images and high-definition video is a key consideration when customers shop for a new camera. Providing stellar video-shooting capability in a compact frame, Canon has incorporated 1080p Full HD video recording into the PowerShot ELPH 510 HS and ELPH 310 HS, while the PowerShot SX150 IS camera features 720p HD video recording. Each camera can optically zoom while filming and has a dedicated movie button for quick access to the video-recording mode. The PowerShot ELPH 510 HS and ELPH310 HS cameras also include Movie Digest mode that shoots a four-second video before capturing a still image and then automatically combine a full day’s worth of videos into one clip. All three PowerShot cameras are also iFrame capable, allowing for quick and easy sharing and editing across multiple platforms and devices.

Three Canon products win esteemed EISA awards in Europe

Three Canon products were recognized with prestigious product awards by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA), composed of 50 special interest magazines from 19 European countries focusing on such categories as photography, audio, video and mobile devices. The Canon EOS 600D (Canon Rebel T3i in the Americas and EOS Kiss X5 in Japan) digital SLR camera earned European Camera 2011-2012 honors, the Canon EF70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto lens was crowned European Professional Lens 2011-2012, and the Canon LEGRIA HF M41 (VIXIA HF M41 and iVIS HF M41) was named European Camcorder 2011-2012.

First launched in 1982, EISA awards are presented to products released in Europe within the past 12 months and deemed representative of their product category by a judging panel composed of editors of EISA-affiliated magazines specializing in that product division. Marking its 30th year, EISA has recognized a wide range of Canon products and technologies, including the company’s digital cameras, digital camcorders and inkjet printers. Canon took home its first EISA award in 1984 with the T70 SLR camera, and has since been honored with a total of 52 EISA awards spanning 26 years.

Canon EOS 600D: European Camera 2011-2012

Noted for its “very strong” set of features and customizable functions, the 18.0-megapixel Canon EOS 600D was recognized by the EISA jury for its “excellent” resolution and low-noise performance, making the camera an “extremely desirable model” for entry-level users. Praised for its “host of beginner-friendly features,” such as Full HD video recording, a wide dynamic range and articulated LCD screen, the 600D was commended for making “advanced picture quality easier to achieve.”

Canon EF70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM: European Professional Lens 2011-2012

Acclaimed as an “amazing telephoto lens,” the EF70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM was awarded for its “high image quality” performance, “extremely durable” construction, and “surprisingly compact” design. According to EISA judges, the cost-effective lens “sets a new standard” for this popular zoom range thanks to its professional-level Auto Focus and Image Stabilizer functions, and performs “very well even at its widest aperture.”

Canon LEGRIA HF M41: European Camcorder 2011-2012

The compact LEGRIA HF M41, lauded as “useful for shooting high-quality videos under practically all conditions,” comes equipped with an “easy-to-use menu system” and “as many automatic and manual functions [users] could wish for.” The high-end camcorder was awarded for its “extremely fast” auto-focus performance and “extremely good” picture quality, and earned praise from the EISA jury for its “exceptionally low level of noise, even in poor light.”

In addition to the EISA award, the EOS 600D was named “Best DSLR Entry Level in 2011” by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) in April of this year.*

Getty Images Presents the Latest 27Letters

Talking in Pictures. Illustrating Through Visual Trends. A Letter From Paula Scher.

Singapore, 28 September 2011: Getty Images has today announced its most recent project within 27Letters, “A Letter from Paula Scher,” featuring renowned graphic designer, Paula Scher. Taking a deeper dive into everyday insights by profiling thought leaders within the visual space, Paula Scher is the first of several executives to share insight on camera, related to visual understanding, communication and ideas.

Getty Images’ 27Letters is a dedicated website for creatives that showcases the visual trends that are currently setting the global visual conversation. Collated alphabetically and updated every few days, 27Letters was first launched in 2010. The initiative features insights into the most used, referenced and talked-about visual trends in the media space, from over 250 influential media sites and opinion-forming blogs, providing “bite-sized” reports on the latest visual content.

“We created 27Letters to identify the latest visual ideas and trends that will shape the imagery of tomorrow and present them in a way that’s easy to consume,” explained Andrew Saunders, Senior Vice President of Creative at Getty Images. “Our customers are constantly seeking the latest trends and unique content to share with their clients and audiences, and 27Letters gives them the tools to stay on top of the rapidly-changing media landscape.”

In addition to showcasing global visual trends in the form of easily-digestible reports, 27Letters presents creatives with the innovative trends that truly matter. Snapshots of a few of the trends to be featured within the new 27Letters collection include:

P is for Preppy: It’s hard to imagine at this moment in time, but next year we will be swimming in Preppy. Baz Luhrmann’s version of The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and a voiceover by Tobey Maguire, will launch 1920s fashions. An early twist on this is Masaya Kuroki’s Spring 2012 collection for French label Maison Kitsune. Better dig out that boater and blazer.

U is for Ultra-Man: Masculinity in advertising gets evermore magnified in Old Spice’s face-off between Isaiah Mustafa and Fabio. These cartoon versions of maleness, trading mock-insults, has reeled in viewing numbers via Twitter questions from users. There’s a lot of mock-heroic “hyper-masculinity” around in ads at the moment. It gives licence to a certain amount of vanity. Expect more exploration of imagery around masculinity.

W is for Wonder: As the Atlantis completed its final mission, the Big Picture ran this visual homage to the last space flight. This image of the International Space Station and Atlantis (the Russian Soyuz is docked on the left) with the earth in the background, captures the sense of technological endeavour and the scale of human achievement. Space imagery will still tug emotional strings around wonder.

“The visual trends that we see all around us are highly impactful,” said Andrew Delaney. “We try to look at everything as if we are seeing it for the first time, regardless of whether it is something that we see every day. Through 27Letters, we feature real insights on the most used, referenced and talked about visuals in the media space – actively listening, watching and reacting to mainstream media sites and blogs covering a variety of categories.”

Content featured on 27Letters is regularly refreshed, providing insightful analysis of the latest visual ideas from advertising, architecture, art, design, fashion, film and photography. The latest 27Letters collection can be viewed online here: www.gettyimages.com/27Letters

Canon launches EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II lens

for photography enthusiasts to capture details both near and far.
– Maximize details with new affordable telephoto lens.

Singapore
, 23 September, 2011 – Canon today revealed the new EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II telephoto lens, with an extensive zoom range that allows photographers to get intimately close to the action from a safe distance. Nature, wildlife and sports photo enthusiasts will enjoy the benefit of the crop factor to get maximum detail at long distances.

“Photographers are constantly seeking to learn about the various genres of photography,” said Andrew Koh, Senior Director & General Manager of Canon Imaging & Information Products Group. “The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II lens is a good starter lens for photographers interested in taking up telephotography with its compact form factor, extensive range and affordability.”

 A Higher Image Quality
The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II lens allows users to take picturesque long-range photographs. Photographers can expect sharper shots with the inclusion of an Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) lens element, which allows the user to maintain high image quality across the entire zoom range.

In addition, Canon’s four-stop[i] Image Stabilization technology lets photographers  take pictures in low light settings with ease, and with automatic panning detection, users need not miss high speed shots anymore.

Portrait-oriented photographers can look forward to creating unique images with the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II’s new 7-bladed circular aperture capability that creates a smooth out-of-focus effect for pleasing and professional-looking pictures.

Enhanced Mobility and Environmentally Friendly
With a long zoom range yet weighing in at only 390g, the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II is ideal lens for photographers seeking an affordable and versatile lens for general-purpose telephoto photography.

Environmentally conscious users will also be pleased to know that all of the glass elements used in the lens’ optics are completely lead-free.

Price & Availability
The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II will be available from early October at authorized Canon dealers at the recommended retail price of S$499.

-Four-stop image stabilization: Hand-held images that require a shutter speed of 1/250 to eliminate camera shake can now be taken hand-held at a shutter speed of as slow as 1/15.
——————————————————–

Editor’s Note
This consumer targeted lens is in its 2nd incarnation since the previous version. Although it is expected that Professionals will shun this lens opting for the better built “L” brethens to the likes of  EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM II or the long serving EF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS USM, this EF-S 55-250mm is really targeting at beginners who wish to have access to super telephoto range without breaking their bank. As the competition heats up with replacement lens models, Canon had updated their “Kit Lens” with the new EF-S18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II and had given a better quality lens with good image quality recently, this EF-S55-250mm will be the “Partner lens” that was expected to be updated. And Canon did just as expected.

The EF-S 55-250mm has the 35mm equivalent range of 88-400mm on a typical Canon APS-C (1.6 crop). This is value for money in any sense. I am unable to comment on the image quality and handling at press time as I have not personally tried the lens, but based on the specs, asking price and expected improvement, I am sure this another Fantastic Plastic.

Will be back with a review if I manage to lay my hands on one of this. 🙂

Following the recent update by competitor Tokina with their ATX12-24mm F4 PRO Mark II, Sigma had just launched a new lens unit into this segment with it’s new Mark II of 12-24mm with HSM. I am sure landscape photographers will not be bothered with the aperture as most of them are shooting in the region of F8 & beyond. Meanwhile, let’s hope Tamron is working hard on their offering for the same range too. See below for the specs for the new Sigma 12-24mm – the Ultra Wide Angle Zoom lens.

Revisions to the lens include the inclusion of one Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass element and four of the company’s new “F” Low Dispersion FLD glass elements to compensate for color aberration and provide high imagequality. FLD glass is the highest level, low dispersion glass available with extremely high light transmission and performance equal to fluorite glass. NEW “Hoodless” Tokina AT-X 107 NH

The Tokina AT-X 107 NH is a fish-eye lens that gives the digital photographer an approximate 180° field of view with dramatic curvature of field or “fish-eye” effect. The AT-X 107 NH only differs from the AT-X 107 DX in that the built-in hood as been removed allowing for a wider image area and more coverage on full-frame sensor (FX) cameras.*

The front element of the AT-X 107 DX has a newly formulated WR or “Water Repellent” optical coating on the glass. This new coating makes marks such as spots left by water or finger-prints much easier to clean than standard multi-coating. With the built-in hood removed the lens also fits in a wider variety of underwater housings.

The rear optical group of the lens contains 1 SD (Super-Low Dispersion) glass element to reduce the number of elements (pieces of glass) in the optical design in order to make the lens more compact, light-weight and faster focusing.

*Full corner to corner image can be achieved on an FX camera between approx. 14.5-17MM depending on the camera model, at 10-14MM there is a semi-circular view.

  2. Magic Filters*4 can be recorded in HD movie (MPEG-4 AVC / H.264)
  3. 3-inch, 460K dots High-resolution LCD monitor to enjoy viewing photos you just took

The OLYMPUS SZ Series is a digital camera that is perfect for travel and sports events. Thanks to its advanced optical expertise, Olympus has been able to incorporate in a compact, palm-size camera the same high-powered super-telephoto capability that normally makes SLR cameras so bulky and heavy. Because it is so small, this camera is an ideal travelling companion, offering the power of a full-size camera and lenses without increasing the amount of luggage. The SZ Series is an easy-to-use “all-in-one” camera that makes it possible anyone to enjoy the pleasure of advanced photography.

The Olympus SZ-11 covers a remarkably wide shooting range with focal lengths ranging from 25mm*5 wide-angle to 500mm*5 telephoto with the super-telephoto 20x optical zoom lens. It can capture big, up-close images of even the most distant subjects, creating high-impact pictures by capturing details that cannot be seen with the naked eye, such as the facial expressions of children in athletic or theatrical events or athletes in professional sport competitions. To reduce the picture blur commonly associated with telephoto shooting effectively, the SZ-11 features DUAL IS using a CCD-shift image stabilization mechanism and high-sensitivity image capturing. It also features dedicated Movie REC button to immediately shooting movies and Magic Movies to enhance your camera life. Moreover, you can enjoy the SZ-11 in your usual life as well with the full array of functions such as 3D Photos*6, Beauty Mode*7, Beauty Make, and Pet Mode.

Auto Release
The camera captures perfectly your pet’s cute expressions. Use the Auto Release function to have the camera automatically shoot the photo the moment the dog or cat who is the main subject turns to face the camera. You will never again miss your pet’s whimsical facial expressions.

Buying DSLR Lenses on Shoestring Budget?

As a commercial photographer, I was often asked what are the brand, model, lenses to buy etc.

Usually I will recommend based on the user’s applications & purpose of buying the equipment.

Recently, many asked me, “hey Allan, what if I just want to try (fill this up) photography and I am buying lenses on a budget, what would you recommend?” I will take that as you are buying a Lens to explore new genre, not using this for serious commercial work and you will probably sell or give away the lens once you got sick of it.

Below are some of the lenses that I will usually recommend. They are not too bad though, and it certainly gives the big boys a run for their money. Let’s see what I’ve compiled here.

Ultra Wide Angle Prime.
Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC Aspherical

Samyang Optics, a Korea Optical outfit have been churning out incredible lenses at a great price and of good acceptable quality. This lens has a bright constant aperture of F2.8 and lens has good coating to reduce CA and flare. It even has aspherical elements! Although the downside of this lens is only available in manual focus, you really don’t have much to complain about comparing this lens with your proprietary brand’s equivalent which usually costs 7 times more.

This lens also comes under the brand of Rokinon and maybe other Brands not known to me.
(I heard Opteka is also Samyang – not confirmed)

Online Price: SGD $480.00 with Shipping (USD $388.00) available in various Mounts.

Fisheye Lens
Zenitar 16mm F2.8 Fisheye

Made by Krasnogorsky Zavod from Russia, this lens is one of the most popular Fisheye in the market today. Cheap as it is, this lens produces great fish eye images with a constant aperture of F2.8. Comes multi-coated, lens is good for most outdoor applications. Built with solid metal housing, this lens looks like it can last more than a decade. Usually packaged with dropped-in filters in 3 colors & a little pouch, this is a super-value-for-money hobby lens. Comes in manual focus only, but considering the asking price of less than half of those offered by proprietary brands, this is a steal.

Just to add, this lens can be dismantled for a thorough cleaning without the need for screwdrivers and complicated precision tools, all you need to do is unscrew. I did that recently to remove a speck of dust in between the elements, amazing!

Online Price: SGD $256.00 with Shipping (USD $207.00) available in various Mounts.
NOTE: * Sony Alpha Mount cost slightly more.

Super Telephoto Zoom
Opteka 650-1300mm HD F8-16

Well, no one really knows where Opteka comes from. Though brand stronghold is in the USA, there have been talks that these cheap super telephoto zoom lenses could be manufactured elsewhere likeKorea(think Samyang) or even China. That doesn’t bother me though. Opteka has an incredible range of super telephoto lenses. Look at their lenses carefully you will notice that it is basically just a simple adaptation of using telescope with a lens mount to mount it to your DSLR. With that, you get incredible range. Optical quality suffers in some ways, but you get to shoot things that you never thought was possible. Comes in manual focus, these lens are reasonably built with metal housing and comes with tripod mounts. Try asking Canon or Nikon how much is your usual EF 800mm or a Nikkor 800mm, you will remember Opteka.

Online Price: SGD $358.00 with Shipping (USD $290.00) available in various Mounts.

Note that I had recommended the extreme ends of the range because no one in the right mind will go buy a lens from 17-400mm range to “play”. These are the lenses that became shoe string options that many will consider when compared with a proprietary equivalent that autofocus and has other added features. I will say you just want to have a “feel” of these range. Like I mentioned earlier, you will probably give or sell away these lenses after a while.

As a disclaimer, I will not say that the above 3 lenses will give you National Geographic Standard photos, but it will offer you the experience of shooting in a very different range away from your usual range,  at a shoe string budget of course.

Getty Images to partner with The Brand Union in support of the inaugural SpikesAlso photography competition

SINGAPORE, 10 August, 2011 – Getty Images will once again partner with The Brand Union to support the inaugural SpikesAlso event at the Spikes Asia festival, which runs from 18 – 20 September, 2011. SpikesAlso is a new project that will showcase the personal artistic talent of the creative community across the Asia Pacific.

The SpikesAlso event follows the success of Getty Images’ involvement at the Cannes Lions Festival in June 2011, where Getty Images partnered with The Brand Union to bring CannesAlso, a unique exhibition of photography by creatives, to life.  Entries were judged by world-famous photographer Rankin, and exhibited in the form of a giant book installation.

Similarly, SpikesAlso takes the form of a photography competition, with entries to be exhibited during the Spikes Asia festival. The competition is open to professional and amateur photographers across Asia Pacific, with the aim of highlighting the region’s creative talent through the compelling medium of photography.

Entitled Look Twice, the SpikesAlso theme celebrates the rediscovery of everyday life as an art form.

The competition will be judged by renownedSingaporephotographer John Clang, whose work is influenced by the concept of finding inspiration in the world around.

“An image that inspires is one that brings us face to face with our own existence. It pulls the stranger standing next to us into the intimate radius of our life… It connects,” comments competition judge and curator, John Clang.

Getty Images is pleased to offer the top entrants the chance to become a Getty Images contributor.

Entrants will also be given the opportunity to have their work reviewed by a member of the Getty Images creative team, who will be at the SpikesAlso exhibition space, conducting portfolio reviews and offering advice to aspiring photographers and photography enthusiasts.

Stuart Hannagan, Director of Photography Asia Pacific at Getty Images, said: “It is immensely rewarding to recognize and help foster talent within the creative community and the opportunity to do so as part of the region’s oldest and most prestigious creative festival is hugely exciting. SpikesAlso is a fantastic platform to unearth and showcase the impressive depth and range of photographic talent that exists within the Asia Pacific.”

Stuart Hannagan continues: “Alongside SpikesAlso’s lead sponsor, The Brand Union, we are really looking forward to seeing the variety of entries submitted on display during the festival – and being inspired, of course, to “look twice”.”

The competition is open for entry from today through until 5 September, 2011. Entry is free and entrants are invited to submit up to three examples of their personal photography. For more information, specifications and how to enter, visit www.spikes.asia/also.

“Captain America: The First Avenger” Action Shots Captured With Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Cameras

Full 1080P HD Capture, 24p Frame Rate and Canon EF Lenses Provide Compatibility and Creative Options for Movie Production

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., August 1, 2011 – Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging, announced today that the highly anticipated feature film, “Captain America: The First Avenger”, used Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR cameras to capture many of the movie’s action shots. Throughout the super hero action picture, the 5D Mark II was used to shoot motion sequences that were seamlessly integrated with the production’s 35mm film footage.

More compact and lightweight than traditional motion-picture cameras, the 5D Mark II offers creative advantages such as compatibility with Canon’s wide range of high-performance EF lenses, user-selectable frame rates, including 24p (23.976 fps), the standard for motion-picture cinematography, and full 1920 x 1080 HD imagery captured by the camera’s high-resolution 21.1-megapixel (36mm by 24mm) Canon CMOS sensor. According to Jonathan Taylor, second unit director/director of photography on “Captain America: The First Avenger”, these features made the 5D Mark II an excellent choice for the capture of dramatic POV (point-of-view) action shots.

“The challenge with a lot of action photography is getting the camera in the right position,” Taylor noted. “I’m always looking to get the camera into impossible to reach places because those kinds of shots make action sequences much more exciting. Most 35mm motion-picture cameras and even the leading digital cinematography cameras are just too big to get into interesting positions.”

Action scenes in “Captain America: The First Avenger” in which Taylor used 5D Mark II cameras for POV shots include a car chase and crash, and a high-speed motorcycle pursuit. The small size of the camera enabled Taylor to mount it on the interiors and exteriors of moving vehicles to capture dramatic action shots. The camera’s size also ensured that it was “invisible” to the film cameras shooting the same scene from a distance.

“The thing with action is that the more angles you can shoot, the faster the cuts you can use, and the more energy you get into a sequence,” Taylor added.

Previously, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II cameras and EF lenses were used for action shots in the blockbuster hit “Iron Man 2”.
