TOKYO-Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the first two models in the new Nikon 1 series, the J1 and V1. Nikon 1 is an advanced interchangeable lens that proposes new forms of imaging expression with a new super high-speed AF CMOS image sensor, the new high-speed image-processing engine, EXPEED 3, and the new Nikon 1 mount lens system.

Development Background

As a manufacturer of optical devices, Nikon has long developed products equipped with innovative new features based on technologies originally cultivated decades ago for film cameras. The many cameras released by Nikon over the years have continuously expanded photographic possibilities. Even with the nearly complete transition to digital that we see today, Nikon has continued to expand its lineups of compact digital cameras and digital-SLR cameras. Nikon’s COOLPIX-series cameras are user friendly compact digital cameras, while the D-series line of digital-SLR cameras supports the needs of an incredibly wide variety of photographer, from the beginner to the professional. Nikon 1 J1 / V1 Primary Features

The cameras are also equipped with Nikon’s newest lens mount system. Despite the new lens mount, the mount adapter enables the use of existing F-mount NIKKOR lenses*2 with the J1 and V1, for excellent compatibility with equipment users may already own.
- Nikon 1 mount, Nikon’s new compact, high-performance lens mount systemThe Nikon 1 mount is the new lens mount system developed for compatibility with Nikon’s new imaging format. The new mount not only supports the dedicated 1 NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6, 1 NIKKOR VR 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6, 1 NIKKOR 10mm f/2.8 and 1 NIKKOR VR 10-100mm f/4.5-5.6 PD-ZOOM Nikon 1-mount interchangeable lenses, but also F-mount NIKKOR lenses*2, manufactured by Nikon for more than half a century, when the new FT1 mount adapter is used. The J1 and V1 are the world’s first interchangeable lens digital cameras equipped with focal plane phase detection AF*3 for the world’s fastest autofocusing*4. They offer standard sensitivities of ISO 100 to 3200, with the ability to further increase sensitivity to an equivalent of ISO 6400 with a Hi 1 setting. They also support matrix metering, center-weighted metering and spot metering.

Motion Snapshot, imaging function that combines full-HD movie with a still image for more dramatic imaging expressionIn Motion Snapshot mode, simply pressing the shutter-release button records a still image and about a second of high-resolution movie footage beginning before and ending after the time the shutter-release button was pressed. Movies recorded in Motion Snapshot mode are played back in slow motion. With slow-motion playback at 0.4x normal playback speed of the movie and a still image, Motion Snapshot allows users to express impressive moments that show slight changes in expression, the rustling of tree leaves, or fluctuations in nature.Shooting/recording: Choose one of four themes (Beauty, Waves, Relaxation, Tenderness) prior to shooting. When the shutter-release button is pressed halfway, the camera begins recording movie footage to the memory buffer. When the shutter-release button is pressed the rest of the way down, a still image, along with about a second of movie footage beginning before and ending after the time the shutter-release button was pressed, are recorded to the memory card.Playback: After approximately 2.5 seconds of movie footage recorded in Motion Snapshot is played back in slow motion, the still image is displayed. Smart Photo Selector for simple capture of the best shotWhen the shutter-release button is pressed halfway in Smart Photo Selector mode, the camera focuses and begins buffering images. When the shutter-release button is then pressed the rest of the way down, the camera compares shots recorded to the buffer both before and after the shutter-release button was pressed, and automatically selects five to record to the memory card. It also eliminates the need for capturing a large volume of shots with continuous shooting and the troublesome process of later manually selecting the best shot from a series.Shooting/recording:Rotate the mode dial to Smart Photo Selector mode. When the shutter-release button is pressed halfway, the camera focuses and begins recording images to the buffer memory. Up to 20 images can be saved in the buffer memory each time the shutter-release button is pressed (some before the shutter-release button is pressed, some after). Of the 20 buffered images, the camera automatically records the single best shot based on movement and composition, as well as four additional candidate images to the memory card.Playback: Users can choose a different “best shot” than that selected by the camera from the candidate images, and also delete unnecessary images.
A simple, high-quality designThe concepts of simple, streamlined, fashionable and high-quality were adopted for design of both the Nikon 1 J1 and V1. The only decoration on these flat, smooth cameras is the Nikon 1 brand name and the J1 or V1 model name on the front of the cameras. Positioning of a rear grip ensures a firm hold on the camera without sacrificing its simple, flat shape.
What’s more, lenses are available in the same colors as the cameras* for an integrated appearance. The graphical user interface (GUI) adopted for monitor display is structured to be as simple and streamlined as the cameras themselves. Superfluous menus have been eliminated for an intuitive, easy-to-understand GUI design.

Ricoh Establishes PENTAX RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD.

Tokyo, October 1, 2011–Ricoh Company, Ltd. (President & CEO: Shiro Kondo; hereinafter referred to as “Ricoh”) announces the establishment of PENTAX RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. as its wholly owned subsidiary on October 1, 2011.

Earlier, HOYA Corporation (President & CEO: Hiroshi Suzuki; hereinafter referred to as “HOYA”) transferred the PENTAX Imaging Systems Business to PENTAX Imaging Corporation, a newly established subsidiary of HOYA, through an absorption-type split (spin off) and business transfer. Ricoh has acquired all shares outstanding in PENTAX Imaging Corporation, as of today, completing the transaction. Ricoh also changed the name of the company at the same time.

By forming the new company, Ricoh will strive to further bolster consumer products and services, in addition to its existing digital camera business.

A challenging task for the photographer on assignment or appointed family photographer is working under low-light conditions. Helping improve the quality of images from those situations is Canon’s HS SYSTEM, where the camera’s image processor and high-sensitivity image sensor work in tandem to enhance low-light image quality. With the PowerShot S100 and PowerShot SX40 HS, Canon has introduced a new DIGIC 5 image processor, maintaining the cameras’ superb low-light image quality while improving overall camera operation and color accuracy. The new image processor has improved noise reduction and advanced Multi-area White Balance optimizing color tones of both subject and background under multiple light sources.

High-speed, High-quality, High-performance

An added benefit of the DIGIC 5 image processor is the incorporation of the new High-speed Burst HQ¹providing users with the ability to continuously capture a maximum of eight frames. This new feature will allow the story of a child scoring the winning goal on the soccer field or a marathon runner crossing the finish line to be told frame-by-frame through the eye of the photographer.

Intelligent IS

One of the most important innovations for a point-and-shoot camera has been Image Stabilization (IS) since it helps improve image quality by reducing camera blur for both images and videos. Canon has taken this technology one step further with the new Intelligent IS which automatically chooses from six different modes (Normal, Macro, Panning, Dynamic, Powered, Tripod) to optimize image stabilization and help achieve crisp, blur-free images for various shooting conditions.

When the PowerShot S95 Digital camera was announced in 2010, it received critical praise for having an impressive feature set and superb low-light capabilities. Building upon the success of this model is the PowerShot S100, featuring a host of upgrades making it a must-have for any photo enthusiast. Featuring a 12.1-megapixel CMOS image sensor — part of the HS SYSTEM — this versatile camera has a 24-120mm wide angle lens with 5x optical zoom, GPS functionality and is capable of achieving improved low-light performance of up to ISO 6400. Extra-large 3 inch LCD monitor

Three Canon products win esteemed EISA awards in Europe

Three Canon products were recognized with prestigious product awards by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA), composed of 50 special interest magazines from 19 European countries focusing on such categories as photography, audio, video and mobile devices. The Canon EOS 600D (Canon Rebel T3i in the Americas and EOS Kiss X5 in Japan) digital SLR camera earned European Camera 2011-2012 honors, the Canon EF70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto lens was crowned European Professional Lens 2011-2012, and the Canon LEGRIA HF M41 (VIXIA HF M41 and iVIS HF M41) was named European Camcorder 2011-2012.

First launched in 1982, EISA awards are presented to products released in Europe within the past 12 months and deemed representative of their product category by a judging panel composed of editors of EISA-affiliated magazines specializing in that product division. Marking its 30th year, EISA has recognized a wide range of Canon products and technologies, including the company’s digital cameras, digital camcorders and inkjet printers. Canon took home its first EISA award in 1984 with the T70 SLR camera, and has since been honored with a total of 52 EISA awards spanning 26 years.

Canon EOS 600D: European Camera 2011-2012

W is for Wonder: As the Atlantis completed its final mission, the Big Picture ran this visual homage to the last space flight. This image of the International Space Station and Atlantis (the Russian Soyuz is docked on the left) with the earth in the background, captures the sense of technological endeavour and the scale of human achievement. Space imagery will still tug emotional strings around wonder.

Editor’s Note
This consumer targeted lens is in its 2nd incarnation since the previous version. Although it is expected that Professionals will shun this lens opting for the better built “L” brethens to the likes of EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM II or the long serving EF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS USM, this EF-S 55-250mm is really targeting at beginners who wish to have access to super telephoto range without breaking their bank. As the competition heats up with replacement lens models, Canon had updated their “Kit Lens” with the new EF-S18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II and had given a better quality lens with good image quality recently, this EF-S55-250mm will be the “Partner lens” that was expected to be updated. And Canon did just as expected.

The EF-S 55-250mm has the 35mm equivalent range of 88-400mm on a typical Canon APS-C (1.6 crop). This is value for money in any sense. I am unable to comment on the image quality and handling at press time as I have not personally tried the lens, but based on the specs, asking price and expected improvement, I am sure this another Fantastic Plastic.

Will be back with a review if I manage to lay my hands on one of this. 🙂

Sigma Launch 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 DG HSM II

Following the recent update by competitor Tokina with their ATX12-24mm F4 PRO Mark II, Sigma had just launched a new lens unit into this segment with it’s new Mark II of 12-24mm with HSM. I am sure landscape photographers will not be bothered with the aperture as most of them are shooting in the region of F8 & beyond. Meanwhile, let’s hope Tamron is working hard on their offering for the same range too. See below for the specs for the new Sigma 12-24mm – the Ultra Wide Angle Zoom lens.

NEW “Hoodless” Tokina AT-X 107 NH

The Tokina AT-X 107 NH is a fish-eye lens that gives the digital photographer an approximate 180° field of view with dramatic curvature of field or “fish-eye” effect. The AT-X 107 NH only differs from the AT-X 107 DX in that the built-in hood as been removed allowing for a wider image area and more coverage on full-frame sensor (FX) cameras.*

The front element of the AT-X 107 DX has a newly formulated WR or “Water Repellent” optical coating on the glass. This new coating makes marks such as spots left by water or finger-prints much easier to clean than standard multi-coating. With the built-in hood removed the lens also fits in a wider variety of underwater housings.

The rear optical group of the lens contains 1 SD (Super-Low Dispersion) glass element to reduce the number of elements (pieces of glass) in the optical design in order to make the lens more compact, light-weight and faster focusing.

*Full corner to corner image can be achieved on an FX camera between approx. 14.5-17MM depending on the camera model, at 10-14MM there is a semi-circular view.

3D Photo Shooting Function
You can shoot dynamic 3D photos in any mode from usual life to landscape. Recreate a sense of depth like that of the original scene. You can then enjoy the full power of 3D images on compatible TV sets and computers. Simply select the 3D Photo in Shooting mode and then release the shutter and slide the camera sideways to easily get a 3D photo. During 3D Photo shooting, a 3D file and regular JPEG files are recorded at the same time. There are two modes to shoot 3D photos;

MP Format (Multi Picture Format)
This is a format standardized by CIPA to handle multiple images under a single image file. When you use the 3D Photo Shooting function, the images for the right and left eye are recorded in a single MP format file.

Pet Mode^*10
The camera automatically detects dogs’ and cats’ faces. Selecting the [Pet Mode – Dog] or [Pet Mode – Cat] from the scene mode, the camera will quickly detect your pet’s face and automatically focus on it before shooting the photo. The camera will detect up to 10 faces of different dogs or cats.

Auto Release
The camera captures perfectly your pet’s cute expressions. Use the Auto Release function to have the camera automatically shoot the photo the moment the dog or cat who is the main subject turns to face the camera. You will never again miss your pet’s whimsical facial expressions.

Eye-Fi Card Compatible^*11
Eye-Fi Cards are SDHC memory cards with built-in wireless LAN functionality. The images that you take can easily be uploaded wirelessly to your computer and to photo printing services and online albums.

Buying DSLR Lenses on Shoestring Budget?

As a commercial photographer, I was often asked what are the brand, model, lenses to buy etc.

Usually I will recommend based on the user’s applications & purpose of buying the equipment.

Recently, many asked me, “hey Allan, what if I just want to try (fill this up) photography and I am buying lenses on a budget, what would you recommend?” I will take that as you are buying a Lens to explore new genre, not using this for serious commercial work and you will probably sell or give away the lens once you got sick of it.

Below are some of the lenses that I will usually recommend. They are not too bad though, and it certainly gives the big boys a run for their money. Let’s see what I’ve compiled here.

Ultra Wide Angle Prime.
Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC Aspherical

Samyang Optics, a Korea Optical outfit have been churning out incredible lenses at a great price and of good acceptable quality. This lens has a bright constant aperture of F2.8 and lens has good coating to reduce CA and flare. It even has aspherical elements! Although the downside of this lens is only available in manual focus, you really don’t have much to complain about comparing this lens with your proprietary brand’s equivalent which usually costs 7 times more.

This lens also comes under the brand of Rokinon and maybe other Brands not known to me.
(I heard Opteka is also Samyang – not confirmed)

Fisheye Lens
Zenitar 16mm F2.8 Fisheye

Made by Krasnogorsky Zavod from Russia, this lens is one of the most popular Fisheye in the market today. Cheap as it is, this lens produces great fish eye images with a constant aperture of F2.8. Comes multi-coated, lens is good for most outdoor applications. Built with solid metal housing, this lens looks like it can last more than a decade. Usually packaged with dropped-in filters in 3 colors & a little pouch, this is a super-value-for-money hobby lens. Comes in manual focus only, but considering the asking price of less than half of those offered by proprietary brands, this is a steal.

Just to add, this lens can be dismantled for a thorough cleaning without the need for screwdrivers and complicated precision tools, all you need to do is unscrew. I did that recently to remove a speck of dust in between the elements, amazing!

Super Telephoto Zoom
Opteka 650-1300mm HD F8-16

Well, no one really knows where Opteka comes from. Though brand stronghold is in the USA, there have been talks that these cheap super telephoto zoom lenses could be manufactured elsewhere likeKorea(think Samyang) or even China. That doesn’t bother me though. Opteka has an incredible range of super telephoto lenses. Look at their lenses carefully you will notice that it is basically just a simple adaptation of using telescope with a lens mount to mount it to your DSLR. With that, you get incredible range. Optical quality suffers in some ways, but you get to shoot things that you never thought was possible. Comes in manual focus, these lens are reasonably built with metal housing and comes with tripod mounts. Try asking Canon or Nikon how much is your usual EF 800mm or a Nikkor 800mm, you will remember Opteka.

Note that I had recommended the extreme ends of the range because no one in the right mind will go buy a lens from 17-400mm range to “play”. These are the lenses that became shoe string options that many will consider when compared with a proprietary equivalent that autofocus and has other added features. I will say you just want to have a “feel” of these range. Like I mentioned earlier, you will probably give or sell away these lenses after a while.

As a disclaimer, I will not say that the above 3 lenses will give you National Geographic Standard photos, but it will offer you the experience of shooting in a very different range away from your usual range, at a shoe string budget of course.

SINGAPORE, 10 August, 2011 – Getty Images will once again partner with The Brand Union to support the inaugural SpikesAlso event at the Spikes Asia festival, which runs from 18 – 20 September, 2011. SpikesAlso is a new project that will showcase the personal artistic talent of the creative community across the Asia Pacific.

As a normal Micro lens that easily enables close-up shooting as close as 0.163 m for life-size images exhibiting pleasing blur characteristics, the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G is a new model in the DX-format lens lineup. It is a compact and lightweight lens available at a very reasonable price for those new to digital-SLR cameras and those currently looking to add to a lens purchased as a set with a Nikon digital-SLR camera.
