My Lowepro Diary (Part 4) – The NEW Passport Messenger

My Lowepro Diary (Part 4) – The NEW Lowepro Passport  Messenger
1
Picture: The NEW Lowepro Passport Messenger Bag.

17th April 2014, Singapore – Lowepro recently released a few NEW Passport Series camera carriers and I was lucky to get hold of the Passport Messenger Bag from Cathay Photo. This medium-sized shoulder sling messenger bag was designed with the everyday photographer in mind. Why? Because the Passport Messenger has space for your camera, a space for your tablet and lots of spaces for your personal effects that you carry along daily. Although the official specifications by Lowepro stated that this bag was meant for a compact DSLR or other medium to smaller size cameras, i tried my luck with a much bigger camera.

2
Picture: These are the items inside my Lowepro Passport Messenger Bag.

Without following the recommended specs, I managed to squeeze in my Canon 5D MarkII mounted with a Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM ART lens, a Ricoh GRIV, my iPad, the lens & body caps, spare batteries, my water bottle & a memory card pouch (not shown here).
I was surprised that the Passport Messenger actually holds up all the above equipments – with some clever arrangement and space management of course. Here’s the official size.

Internal Dimensions: 37.5 x 15 x 27 cm (14.76 x 5.91 x 10.63 in)

External Dimensions: 38.5 x 16.5 x 28.8 cm (15.16 x 6.50 x 11.34 in)

Front Compartment: 20.5 x 11.5 x 17.5 cm (8.07 x 4.53 x 6.89 in)

Weight: 0.5 kg (1.10 lbs)

The Lowepro features a removable/ adjustable camera insert which you can fit in a a large DSLR body and have your lens separated and fit into the sides or simply fits any smaller DSLR with a smaller lens. But what I did (see below) was to place my Canon 5D MarkII downwards with the lens fitted and somehow it fits pretty nicely.

3
Picture: The removable camera insert inside my Lowepro Passport Messenger Bag.

I like the compartment designed for personal tablets or smaller laptops and the thick foam will protect my iPad from knocks and bangs when I am travelling in a crowd. There is a velcro flap that keeps the iPad in position which is very sensibly designed.

4

The front compartment has the usual hook for wet raincoats and there are many little compartments that I can store my batteries, car keys, memory cards, lenspen etc. For smaller loose items, there is a zipped compartment too so that it keeps things organized without messing up the bag.

5

The thick shoulder pad is useful when I am carrying more weight than usual and it makes anyone carrying the Passport Messenger bag very comfortable. The shoulder pad is removable and this means you can just take it out and throw it into a washing machine. Do not forget that the shoulder pad is the very same part of the bag that absorbs your sweat. So washing is recommended.

6

The cam lock buckle on the shoulder strap is another feature that I personally like very much.

7

To adjust the length of the strap, simply put the drawstring to unlock the buckle.

8

Then adjust the length to your liking easily & effortlessly.

9

Once the desired length is acheived, simply press down the cam buckle to lock the strap in position.

10

Personally, I will recommend the Lowepro Passport Messenger bag to anyone who travels around with a fair bit of personal belongings.
The design of the bag is pretty discreet and low profile. It will take a trained eye to notice that this is a camera bag – in disguise. The paddings are well designed so that it protects whatever you are carrying in case of knocks. The sleek looking bag also comes in 2 color options, the pure black (the one you see here) and the sportier Grey & Red version. This bag is great for hand-carrying onto planes when you travel as it will fit into any space under the place seat so that you can retrieve your item easily. Priced to sell, this is a value-for-money bag from Lowepro that I think you should buy 1 too.

For more information on the NEW Lowepro Passport Messenger, please visit here.

Thank you Cathay Photo for the Bag, I love it.

The New Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art Magic

===================================

The New Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art Magic
– Sigma’s new 50mm F1.4 DG HSM ART lens is set to take on all its competitors.
R0012001
Picture: The Award-Winning Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (left) & the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (ART) (right)

16th April 2014, Singapore – The much awaited 50mm of the year had arrived at Singapore after many weeks of anticipation by local Sigma fans. The 50mm F1.4 that once rule the 50mm region has gotten a tougher replacement -now as part of the Sigma Art series lenses. From the photo above you can see that the new 50mm ART has changed how a typical 50mm lens will look like. Breaking away from the squarish profile, the 50mm Art has grown taller (85.4 x 99.9 mm) and it really look closer to its 35mm F1.4 ART sibling.

R0012010
Picture: The Award-Winning Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (left) & the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (ART) (right)

On closer look, the new Sigma 50mm ART is nothing close to its predecessor. The Art lens is redesigned from scratch and it is made for professional level DSLRs. The Art lens features the company’s proven Hypersonic Motor (HSM) but it has just got faster and much quieter. We attribute that to the better sealing and the overall build of the lens body so that operational noise is reduced to a minimum. We really love the creamy smooth focusing for that matter.

R0012007
Picture: The New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (ART) retained the 77mm filter thread and the design looks very Zeiss-like.

As expected from Sigma looking at all the recent releases, Sigma included not 1 but 3 Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass & 1 aspherical glass into its construction making sure that all images are razor-sharp and well-defined. We tested the lens (see photos below) and we certainly love the colors and the details captured even when we shot at wide open (aperture). The 50mm ART also features the company’s Super Multi-Layer coating reducing CA and making dusts harder to stay on the front element – this is what Sigma fans swear by. The package is further sweetened by the new lens barrel material TSC (thermally stable compound) which the world had seen and touched since the first Art lens came.

This 9-blader has 13 elements in 8 groups inside making the lens a little weighty (815gm), but very manageable. We didn’t broke our arms testing the lens for a full 2 days of continuous shooting. Focusing from a mere 40cm (min focusing distance), the 50mm F1.4 has the highest magnification at 1:5.6 when the aperture is set to F8. However for normal operations, the 50mm ART aperture range is from F1.4 to F16.

Before we get to the image quality, let’s take a look at some size comparisons of the new Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM ART with other popular 50mm in the market. (Please note the below is for size comparions only)

R0012108
Picture: Canon EF 50mm F1.2L USM(left) & the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (ART) (right)

R0012107
Picture: Canon EF 50mm F1.8 Mark 1(left) & the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (ART) (right)

R0012111
Picture: Sony SAL 50mm F1.4 SSM(left) & the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (ART) (right)

R0012109
Picture: Nikon AF-Nikkor 50mm F1.8D (left) & the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (ART) (right)

From the above few comparisons, we can see that Sigma had changed how the “usual” 50mm’s shaping profile should look like.
Sigma had rewritten the rules and who say a 50mm must be “square & fat”. The new 50mm ART is now tall & slim. The new 50mm ART when handled, it feels very close to the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM (A) and needless to say, the feel is incredibly good. The 50mm F1.4 ART feels like “one of those $3000 lens” anytime.

Moving on from the cosmetics & build quality, let’s take a look at the lens performance department. We paired the 50mm ART to a Canon 5D MarkII & took a shot indoor without flash of a book that I was reading.

IMG_0032a
Picture: Shot at F1.4 with the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (ART)

We opened the aperture to F1.4 and focused on the word “light” and took a shot. (above)
Then we did a 60% crop and check out the cropped image below.

IMG_0032
Picture: Shot at F1.4 with the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (ART) after 60% crop.

From the cropped photo above, we were surprised at the sharpness rendered on the word that we focused on while the aperture is at its widest. This is impressive – many other wide aperture prime lenses cannot even hold their sharpness until the lens is stopped down. The new Sigma 50mm ART has defied that technicality and is still sharp at wide open, how awesome is that?

We took a few shots at varying apertures of some rice grains against a black table top and check out the incredible details that the new 50mm ART can produce.
IMG_0034

IMG_0040

IMG_0041

IMG_0042

IMG_0043

IMG_0044

From the photos above, you can see that the lens kept the centre sharpness throughout the aperture range from F1.4 to F5.6
We did not stop down further as the sharpness is already impressive at F5.6 so we decided not to carry on stopping down to F16.
We are afraid that if we did, you may cut yourself while reading this review. (kidding)

Since the new Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM ART is also designed as a standard walkabout lens, we test it shooting both indoor and outdoor without a flash and check out the below photos.

IMG_0051
Picture: Shot indoor at F1.4 with the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (ART)

IMG_0053
Picture: Shot indoor at F2.0 with the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (ART)

Picture: Shot outdoor at F1.4 with the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (ART)

IMG_0063
Picture: Shot outdoor at F1.4 with the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM (ART)

So are you impressed? We certainly are. Sigma is reventing lenses that no one else thought was possible and since the Sigma announced the “Sigma Global Vision”, every new Art, Sports & Contemporary line lenses released was released as an award-winning lens. (Why I said that? Because every lens went on to bag awards).

From what we have seen throughout the review, the NEW Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM ART is worth every cent although the asking price is nowhere near cheap. Then again, we cannot place a price on image quality and build quality right?
Get your Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM ART soon before it runs out and face a worldwide shortage like the 35mm f1.4
Personally, this is one lens that I will buy (when I strike lottery) some day.

===================================

CapitaLand-National Geographic Channel “Building People” Photography Competition focuses on “Happiness”
– Grand prize of an exclusive overseas assignment under the mentorship of Pulitzer Center grant recipient and National Geographic Creative Photographer, Sean Gallagher

capitaland-horz

Singapore, 16 April 2014– CapitaLand Limited, in partnership with the National Geographic Channel (NGC), has launched the regional “Building People” Photography Competition (Competition), for a period of eight weeks starting 14 April 2014. In its fifth year, this year’s Competition calls for photographs that reflect “Happiness” against the backdrop of CapitaLand properties – homes, offices, shopping malls, serviced residences and mixed-use developments – in the Asia Pacific region.

Photographers are encouraged to challenge themselves and capture “Happiness” generated by the characteristics of CapitaLand buildings, including their ambience, shape, colour and texture.

Participation has grown considerably since the first Competition in 2010. Last year, there was a 38.5% increase in submissions over 2012, with about 3,000 entries from 10 countries in the Asia Pacific. To date, CapitaLand has a collection of more than
6,500 photographs from the Competition which feature its properties. These pictures allow CapitaLand to have a better understanding of its consumers, translating into a more conducive built environment that resonates with end-users. This aligns with CapitaLand’s philosophy of building people and building communities.

This year’s judging panel includes National Geographic Creative photographer, Mr Sean Gallagher (please refer to Annex A for biography), and executives from CapitaLand and National Geographic Channel. Photographic submissions will be judged according to creative interpretation of “Happiness” captured through the photographers’ lenses.

Mr Tan Seng Chai, Group Chief Corporate Officer, CapitaLand Limited, said: “Buildings are personified by the people who live, work and play in or around their vicinity, and how they are designed, built and operated contribute towards the well-being and happiness of its users. This year’s ‘Happiness’ theme taps both the happy moments experienced at our properties, as well as elements in these buildings that have brought joy to its users. This reinforces our commitment to provide a quality built environment to our residents, office and retail tenants, shoppers and serviced residence guests.”

He added: “As a real estate developer, CapitaLand goes beyond the business of building buildings, to building people and communities too. We will continue to rejuvenate our living environment, bring people together in social spaces at our properties, enhance quality of life through innovative designs and preserve the future of the next generation through sustainability.”

Mr Simeon Dawes, Executive Vice President of Advertising Sales & Partnerships at FOX One Stop Media, commented: “We are extremely encouraged by the tremendous number of photography talents we discover in Asia through this competition each year. The ‘Happiness’ theme provides yet another fantastic opportunity to encourage the continuous discovery of our living environment.”

As a six-time recipient of the Pulitzer Center Grant, Mr Gallagher’s involvement in the project offers a rare opportunity for participating photographers to learn from his vast experience and knowledge of not only the art, but also of the environment. Fluent in Chinese, Mr Gallagher has called Beijing ‘home’ for the past seven years. His work takes him all over the world, engaging and mentoring students and photography enthusiasts through various workshops and seminars. His work has been featured in various international media outlets, reaching a wide audience.

Mr Sean Gallagher said: “I am excited to be a part of this Competition, to have an opportunity to work with the National Geographic Channel, as well as to work with CapitaLand, one of Asia’s largest real estate developers. I am excited to see the participants’ creative interpretation of the theme ‘Happiness’ when they reveal the photographed architecture. Being an environmental photojournalist, it is a bonus to be associated with an organisation like CapitaLand with such a strong commitment to sustainability, with both the natural and built environment as priorities.”

The grand prize winner of the Competition will have the opportunity to embark on an exclusive overseas photography assignment in China under the mentorship of Mr Sean Gallagher. Other prizes include S$5,000 worth of CapitaVouchers and complimentary stay at Ascott serviced residences in Asia Pacific.

Winners will also get an opportunity to join Mr Sean Gallagher on a photography trail in Singapore. In addition, winning submissions will also be showcased at the CapitaLand-NGC “Building People” Photography Exhibition, scheduled for August this year.

A special award, The Voters’ Choice Award, will be given to the participant whose entry receives the highest number of votes from members of the public.

Another special award, Best CapitaMall Photo, will be given to the photographer who best captures shopper engagement within CapitaMalls.

The sponsors of the prizes are CapitaMalls Asia Limited and The Ascott Limited.

Participating photographers will be invited to attend an exclusive CapitaLand-NGC “Building People” Photography Seminar conducted by Mr Sean Gallagher that will be held in August this year.

The Competition is open to the public from 14 April to 8 June 2014 (please refer to Annex B for the Competition details). Participants are required to submit an original captioned photograph via the Competition website at www.capitaland.com/ngcphoto.

For more information, please visit www.capitaland.com/ngcphoto.

Unforgettable Yuan Yang – Featuring Susan Gwee
Yuanyang - 箐口_4

12th April 2014, Singapore – I have been doing photography for a while in Singapore. I have always been fascinated by travel photography. But never will I imagine myself to make the effort and take on a photography-based trip to some other part of the world. But there is always a first time – I took on Yuan Yang, Yunnan in China and my very first photography trip in my life. And since this is my very photography trip, I decided to book my trip with Xing Asia, a licensed photography tour company that is managed by Master Photographer Michael Lee – a professional travel photographer who had left footsteps in many parts of the world.

The experience was fabulous and overwhelmingly awesome. Yuanyang is a beautiful & magical place. The colors, the culture are interesting and the place is full of contrasts. Importantly, it is the local people of Yuan Yang, they are very hospitable, I can feel the warmth of the people everywhere I went and they literally welcome us with wide open arms & hearts. How awesome is that?
To sweeten the trip, Michael Lee has intimate connections with the people there. We were given many opportunities to interact directly with the minority tribes. Through this, I gained a better understanding of their cultures and a deep insight to their lifestyles. The people are sincere and extremely friendly – the feeling of warmth touched me deeply.

During this trip, we were granted a rare chance to attend the Axi Fire Worship Festival of Yi ethnic group from Mile County. Although it was almost impossible to shoot due to the large turnout in a massive crowd, it has been an eye-opener to better understand their culture leaving me with an indescribable experience that I will remember for years to come.

In brief, I am incredibly impressed with the comprehensive & well-tailored itinerary by Xing Asia. This trip provided me with a wide variety of photography opportunities like the mystical Milky Way, the incredibly beautiful Sunrise & Sunset, the contrasting landscapes, portraitures of everyday life of the local people, the festival events and even wildlife photography – all accomplished within the 8 days trip.

I would also like to take this chance to share that I am grateful to Ourshutterjourney.com (Previously Shutter Journey Singapore) for providing me a constant platform to practice & hone my photography skills through their many photography outings. I was able to apply the skills that I have learned on unforeseen circumstances like harsh sunlight, dim shooting environment, continuously moving objects, etc.

Our Tour Guide Michael has also been extremely helpful and very resourceful in planning of the entire itinerary. I enjoyed myself very much throughout the trip and made many new friends sharing the same passion as mine. They generously shared many useful photography tips along the way making the trip very special to me.

What You Need to know about InfraRed Photography

sigma

UPDATED: October 2019

What You Need to know about InfraRed Photography
– The technical aspects by Editor AL Lee & R.Editor Melody Tan

DSC_0468

09th April 2014, Singapore – Many are fascinated by infra-red photography (IR), needless to say, one can easily jump into it by buying screw-on infrared filters like the Hoya R72 or Cokin P007 off the shelves (just like what I did many years ago) since these filter are easily available. However, many photographers ended up frustrated with the longer-than-usual exposure just to get a decent white balance before they can even start shooting their first frame. And no one told them that they also will not able to get crispy sharp tree leaves due to the long exposure and they will have to lug a tripod & a remote switch wherever they go. In extreme cases, they are people who literally fried their sensors due to overheating.

FA
So the trend of modifying older DSLRs & compact cameras into full-time Infrared cameras started. So how does it work? Basically the modification will start from dismantling the camera and getting to the sensor unit. Then there will be the slow & delicate job of slowing removing the low-pass (or hot) filter from the front of the sensor unit. A piece of infrared filter is then selected based on their Nm (IR Cut level meter), their thickness, material being plastic or glass, then the installer will cut the filter to size. Once the filter is ready for installation, the installer will carefully placed the pre-cut IR filter over the sensor and position sealed. (This is why IR-modification is an irreversible modification) Then the camera is being assembled back.

Since there are many companies & individuals doing the modifications on their own, it is also good to know the difference between the type of modifications and other services involved. The price may vary too depending on the process of modification. (or required replacement parts).

For example; there is a basic modification which is pretty cheap.
Steps involved – (SGD $120-$180)
1) Dismantle the camera.
2) Remove Low Pass filter.
3) Paste on a Diamond Cut-&-Break-&-Filed IR Filter (Can be a plastic or glass filter)
4) Assemble the camera.
5) Ready for collection.

Then there is the mid-range modification which is more expensive.
Steps involved – (SGD $200-$380)
1) Dismantle the camera.
2) Remove Low Pass filter.
3) Paste on a Diamond Cut-&-Break-&-Filed IR Filter (Can be a plastic or glass filter).
4) Check for defective parts like the mirror box, shutter arms etc. (replacement will add costs)
5) Assemble the camera.
6) Test for focusing and calibrations.
7) Ready for collection.

Lastly, there is the ultimate modification which is getting popular.
Steps involved – (SGD $450-$600)
1) Test the camera for normal operations and check for faults.
2) Dismantle the camera.
3) Check for in-body fugue & mould & cleaning.
4) Remove Low Pass filter.
5) Check the thickness of the Low-pass filter
6) Water cut or laser cut a selected IR filter to size with the exact thickness.
7) Seal on the pre-cut IR filter using compound sealants.
8) Before assembling, the camera is further checked for defective parts like the mirror box, shutter arms etc. (replacement will add costs)
9) The camera at this stage will be cleaned from inside out.
10) Assemble the camera.
11) Cleaning of all external parts, polishing and restore cosmetic condition.
12) Test for focusing and calibrations.
13) Ready for collection.
14) A workshop on getting the right white balance and a quick introduction to shooting infrared lesson. Workshop includes post-processing methods and tips.

So before you reach out to that dinosaur DSLR living somewhere in your dry cabinet, hold on. The reality is, NOT every camera is suitable to be converted. Some brand likes to have their cameras made with the hot mirror embedded or pre-sealed, some brand just made it impossible by adding on lots of mumbo jumbos to their circuitries & construction so that you get confused, unplugged or joined a wrong wire and you have a camera exploded in your face. Well, I was really just kidding on the second part – some cameras are just impossible to be modified if I have to put it in brief here.

After scouring through websites and forums, we managed to compile the below list of equipment that are suitable or unsuitable for infrared photography. Please note that the list will be updated constantly as more people will try to modify newer cameras. So if you have some information to contribute, please contact us at the links after the jump.

Filters are equally important as that will determine the final colors you will be able to extract from your IR Photos. All IR filters whether it is screw-on, square or industrial uncut stripes, they are measured by NM. Do check out the guide below for the type of “colors” that you might like before you modify your DSLR.

=============================

Infrared Filter Colors:

500NM to 620NM –
Denser Yellow signature, More Colors can be extracted.

650NM-720NM –
Denser Blue signature, Very typical IR colors.

750NM-770NM –
Denser White signature, Less Colorful. Highly popular for the flexibility to extract colors or to render into monochrome.

800NM & Above –
Monochrome (Black & White), High Contrast. (Best used with a Red Filter)

Full Spectrum –
Aka going “bareback”, Gives all kinds of interesting colors & costs a bomb, a leg & an arm with risks of sensors getting fried. Not exactly popular.

Hotspots
A phenomenon that occurs when certain lenses are used. A bright and distinctive red circle appears in your IR photo right at the centre and no amount of processing can correct that out. (possible, but lots of work) Some lenses that produces hotspots on IR photos can be correct by selecting a wider aperture while there are some other lenses that gives you a red surprise throughout the aperture range. So you have to test around to get to the right lenses.

We have compiled a list of lenses from all over the internet (including our some of our local forums) that are suitable or not suitable for Infrared shooting. Do let us know if you had tested other lenses and wish to add to this list.

Other Tips/ Advices on IR Hotspots.

1. If hotspots appears, try using a larger aperture. Many times the hotspots disappears or greatly reduced.

2. Hotspots seems to be the most obvious at 50mm focal length. Many claimed that through the viewfinder, one can see a hexagonal shape distinctly. Therefore, try to avoid shooting at 50mm. Longer focal length lenses with smaller aperture will cause hotspots too.

3. Using Circular Polarizer (CPL), UV filters, ND filters will NOT reduce hotspot.

4. Lens hood will not reduce hotspot.

Thanks to All the contributors, the various websites and individuals for testing out and providing all the require information for this ultimate compilation.

If you have more information to share with us, please feel free to email us so that we may update the list and keep everyone informed.
Cheers to the Eighth Color!

So You Want to be a Model? – Exclusive Interview

===================================

So You Want to be a Model? (Exclusive Interview)
D70_3321 copy 3
Photo: Yschelle Lim, by Photographer John Seah.

14th March 2014, Singapore – So much has been debated, claimed & defended fiercely by photographers about ethics at model shoots (commonly known as TCFD) in Singapore. Following our article on 20 Tips to Prevent Modesty Outraged by Photographers, we have received a multitude of comments and feedbacks from both photographers & models. After much consideration, we’ve decided to interview 2 models who might have “been there & seen it all”.

We were honored to have Yschelle, 20 & Jolin (not her real name), 22 – both semi-professional freelance models to be part of this exclusive interview. Jolin’s real name was withheld due to the sensitivity of her encounters and under her repeated requests of not sharing her real name.

Marcus Low
Photo: Yschelle Lim, by Photographer Marcus Low.

Soured Encounters
Politics are unavoidable in every industry; this goes the same to modeling or photography. Yschelle encountered one such incident when she new to modeling. She became close with a few photographers, and then shoots were planned etc. Once she had confirmed a session with a photographer and was “advised” not to go by another photographer whom she is closer with – which she later found out that the “advice” by the first photographer was derived from jealousy and untrue. Yschelle found herself torn between 2 photographers and to make matter worse, she was forced to choose who she wants to go with. As a new model in the market, this is not good as she may end up with a “reputation” or worse, marked by other photographers or models. Yschelle hated the feeling of being torn in-between when all she wants was to get her job done

John Seah
Photo: Yschelle Lim, by Photographer John Seah.

Jolin has a different story to tell. As a popular model who does lingerie & bikini, she is constantly sought after by photographers – males ones. Although Jolin had met a few good guys whom she became friends with, there are others who are getting her service for something else. There was once she got engaged for a TCFD shoot in a downtown budget hotel. She was told by the organizer that there will 3 photographers shooting her. Jolin show up at the shoot and everything seems normal until all 3 photographers keep finding fault with her poses. Then one by one started to “help adjust” her pose – her breasts got brushed many times but as a model, she kept quiet as she do not wished to be regarded as “unprofessional”. Then it got worse when she was asked to pose with her legs wide open facing the cameras and to pose with half of her panties down showing half her butt. She kept quiet and quietly prayed that it will be all over soon. She is probably in luck when the time is up; the 3 photographers packed up & go – without further harassments or “requests”.

Mike Lim
Photo: Yschelle Lim, by Photographer Mike Lim.

Yschelle shared that, many photographers touched models in the abused name of correcting poses. When she feels that the photographer had crossed the line and started to get uncomfortable, she will be very firm & warn the “touching” photographer to stop. She will ask the photographer how exactly she is to pose and she will correct the pose herself. Yschelle also shared that when she start to get firm and serious, most of the time the photographer will stop or back off. In fact she told us that she had blacklisted a few of such photographers.

Jolin was not so lucky during a separate incident. It had been a lingerie shoot and she was asked put on a panty that was almost transparent. To make matter worse, one of the photographer was complaining that her bikini line are showing some pubic hair. Without any warning, that photographer (while talking and complaining) ran his fingers on her bikini line and the forbidden triangle while deliberately touching her where he was not supposed to be touching. Feeling molested, she quietly took out her shaver and made her way to the toilet. Then another photographer stopped her in her way. He said since they paid for her time to shoot her, it’s not fair for Jolin to do shaving during the paid hours. Before she can react, the 1st photographer took the shaver from her hands while the complaining photographer lifted her bikini from the side exposing all the pubic hair in the golden triangle to let the 1st photographer shave. Jolin swear that they took forever to shave and she was too afraid to do anything to retaliate. While shaving, she heard shutter clicks. When the shoot was over, the photographer duo asked Jolin if she provides extra services. She spits on their faces, took her belongings and ran for her life. When asked if she had reported this to the Police, she claimed that she was afraid to get blacklisted by photographers so she didn’t.

Yschelle later shared about another group of photographers who continuously made suggestive remarks to her during shooting sessions that were sexually explicit. She too, had blacklisted a few of such photographers. Even so, Yschelle sets a limit for herself and those photographers if she were to agree to another shooting assignment by these photographers again.
Jolin has a similar experience too. A “famous & well-known” studio photographer in his 50s was shooting her. During the shoot, this man keeps complimenting on her breasts, how round and perfect her ass was. Jolin was uncomfortable. When the shoot ended, he invited her for a meal which she rejected almost immediately and left. After that shoot, this man keeps messaging her and wanting to invite her out for coffee, for movies and even offers to shoot her “artistically” in nude. Because of this man, Jolin changed her cell phone number.

But despite having soured experiences by the 2 ladies, there are lighter moments and sweet experiences too.

Sweet Experiences.

Yschelle shared about her experience with 2 photographers whom became friends with her. When she was new & just started modeling, she met Steve Tan & Mike Lim, a pair of hobby photographers. As Yschelle was new then she relied heavily on instructions given to her by the photographers that were shooting her. She added that both photographers are not demanding and pleasant to work with. She also found their work pleasing and not overly exaggerated. Their photos are beautiful and yet no revealing shots are required. So Yschelle started to meet the duo often for themed shoots and from there, their friendship bloomed and eventually became close friends today. Her trust with the duo became stronger when they suggested a private bikini shoot in a hotel and they requested Yschelle to bring along a female companion. They also managed her expectations by sharing that they are trying their best. Yschelle is so close to the pair of photographers that I was told that they even have an overseas shoot planned.

Shie Hua (1)

In Jolin’s case, she had done a cosplay theme shoot somewhere remote in the east of Singapore. She was afraid that she might get raped as the shooting location was really far flung from civilization. But her fears were lifted when the photographer “K” called her to inform her that there will be 3 female photographers and 2 male photographers joining the shoot. When Jolin show up at the meeting point, she realized (and relieves that) the group of photographers were all around her age and they hit off immediately. The shoot went well as if she had known the group forever. After the shoot, they went for a meal together and later followed by karaoke. When the day ended, she felt that it was not even an assignment, but more of meeting up with friends and had fun. Jolin told me that K is now her boyfriend and the group of friends is now her best friends now.

That was sweet isn’t it? But in every line (modeling included), there are bound to be bad experiences too.

Bitter Experiences

Yschelle was booked for an “Elegant” themed shoot. The main photographer was very demanding over her wardrobe. He rejected every piece of clothing that Yschelle has.
Not wanting to disappoint, Yschelle went shopping and spent $200+ on new outfits to meet the requirement set by the photographer. I was later told by Yschelle that this is a Free shoot – (what the …). This photographer has a foul mouth too. When Yschelle went to meet him for a pre-shoot chat, he commented blankly to her that she has no fashion sense as she showed up in her casual clothes to meet him. Yschelle further assured that guy that she prefers to dress down when she is not modeling and she has every right to. During shoot, she will dress up to the nines as required. In the end, after spending $200+ and got verbally insulted by this photographer, the shoot didn’t happened. Yschelle shared with me that there was no respect at all. And she will rather not work with such an arrogant photographer. She later found out from her fellow models & photography friends that this guy is widely known for his unprofessional attitude towards models.

Jolin shared that modeling is not all a bed of roses too. She was booked for a private shoot on a yacht to a nearby island. As the yacht sail off, everything seems to be fine until she started feeling nauseous and starting having sea sick. The rocking from the yacht had gotten to her. All the 6 photographers on board didn’t bother to help her or check if she is alright. Unable to control anymore, she emptied whatever that was inside her stomach onto the floor. No one lend a hand, instead every person there back away from Jolin’s vomit. They even shouted at her to clean up “her mess”. Feeling terrible, she went to the skipper and asked for medicated oil. Throughout this time, the photographers were making sarcastic comments to her, say she is probably pregnant, and one of them even insulted her by saying that yacht is for rich people, so this “poor” little girl was probably sailing the first time in her life etc. When they reached the island after 40 minutes, Jolin started to change – but got stopped by the photographers. They commented that after she pukes, her face was so pale that “no make-up” can “save the face”. Ended up the group went fishing around the island and instructed Jolin to stay on the yacht and watch over their cameras. That was also the first & last time that Jolin work with this group of photographers. Jolin later shared that this group are made up of mature men, which is supposed to be more caring and understanding than the younger group. But she was wrong. Very wrong.

From the sharing by Yschelle & Jolin, personally I was shocked to hear about their experiences. Although I know that there are always black sheep(s) in every industry, I am certainly not prepared to hear about what the two ladies had experienced. It was way too extreme and inhumane in some cases that I almost thought I was watching a HK drama.

With a heavy heart after hearing their experiences, I asked both ladies if they have some tips to share with our readers – who might be aspiring budding models.

Tips from Yschelle & Jolin;
1) Always have an open communication with the photographer(s).
2) Clarify & define the shooting theme clearly especially if it involve semi-nudes.
3) Find out the final objective of the shoot, whether it is a leisure practice or a commercially driven project.
4) Speak openly to the photographer if the requested poses are not in line with the planned theme.
5) If a planned theme is not working out, then as models, it is best to suggest to the photographers for a change of theme on the spot.

BTS 2
Photo: Behind the Scene, Yschelle Lim during a shoot. Tough Job.

6) Never show up for any shoot alone, always have a female close friend or companion nearby.
7) If wardrobe is provided, always request from the photographers to view first so that
model will not end up with an almost transparent bra or panty. Size is another common problem.
8) Do not agree to solo shoot with any photographers that you are not familiar with. Instead, invite this photographer for group shoots to understand and know the person better first before committing a solo private shoot.
9) Do research on who are the blacklisted photographers in the industry. And find out who are the models that these blacklisted photographers had shot before and try to ask them for their personal experience working with these marked photographers.
10) Read up more on the photographer, his/her working style, portfolio, to understand more on the requirements for any specific themed shoot.
11) Always shaved your bikini line or waxed it 8 hours before the shoot so that there will be no scarring or red marks as these will show on photos – or worse causing the shoot to be cancelled.
12) Always find out where the photos will be heading.
13) If a pose sounds like porn, reject immediately. You agreed to one, you agreed to all.

Last of all, both Yschelle & Jolin shared that the 6th sense (or common sense) is important too.

Thank you for the really exclusive interview!

Ed.

*We apologise that we were only given permission by Yschelle Lim to publish her photos. We were not able to publish Jolin’s photos due to the sensitive experiences that she had encountered.

Artisan & Artist* Spotted
– at Schmidt Marketing Shop at Ngee Ann City

IMG_2031
Photo: Schmidt Shop Spotted.

19th March, Singapore – Recently I happened to be at Ngee Ann City with another 2 photographer friends to discuss a project on colorful cameras. After our discussion, we decided to take a walk & relax. As we are the typical camera-minded-photographer-who-are-never-sick-of-looking-at-cameras males – and me as a review editor at that, we headed straight to level 5 where there are many electronics shops so we can while away some time.

While loitering, I discovered an interesting shop. I never knew that Schmidt Marketing has a Flagship Store at Ngee Ann City. Standing outside the shop, I did a quick glance and hatched a naughty plan. So I beckoned my friends over and I shared with them that since I had brought along my colorful cameras, maybe I can go inside the shop and irritate some people with a prank. And it was agreed that both of them will shoot the whole process secretly. KC will shoot from outside the shop while Benny will accompany me into the shop and secretly shoot the prank at closer range. we are soooo bad.

_SDI5464
Photo: KC decided to take a shot of Benny & me before we start our little prank. (in case the store calls in the security later)

_SDI5465
Photo: And here we goes. Benny & me entering Schmidt Store – all ready to create some “disturbance”.

Since the theme for our project was “colors”, I decided to head to the camera strap counter where the full range of Artisan & Artist* camera straps are on display. Benny started their “auto roam” around the shop – with his cameras ready while KC will have an overview of the prank from outside the shop.

_SDI5467
Photo: We got greeted professionally, feels great actually.

The store executive greeted me warmly and (seriously) I felt really welcomed. The shop feels classy and upmarket – totally different from the camera shops that I had visited. Warm lightings, spotless glass displays and everything is neat and tidy.
So I started my prank. I informed the store executive that I was looking for a DSLR strap for my camera. Then I was informed by Winnie, the store executive that Artisan & Artist* has a comprehensive line of straps for multiple applications.

_SDI5473-vert
Photo: Customer Service Executive Winnie introducing the various Artisan & Artist* Straps to me.
Top photo shop from outside shop by KC & the close range photo shot by Benny secretly.

IMG_2046
Photo: I started with my Yellow DSLR.

With a poker face, I digged into my camera bag and pulled out a Sunny Yellow camera and calmly placed it on the counter.
” Find me a strap that matches the color of my camera.” – I said. Winnie calmly opened the display case and seems to have a strap in mind and she handed me a Beige colored strap.

IMG_2053

I took the strap and studied the stitching and to my surprise, the Artisan & Artist* strap is near perfect with enforced stitch lines and the feel of the textures are good.

IMG_2059
So I decided to pull the trigger. I asked Winnie to hold on as I took out my Super White Camera next. She seems a little stunned since most cameras are black in color. Told her the same that I need a matching Artisan & Artist* strap for my white camera.

IMG_2077

Winnie took another strap out from the display and handed to me.

IMG_2096

It was a white double woven & stitched strap with the word Artisan & Artist* word embroided in bright red. Indeed a perfect match for my white cam. Containing my excitement, the show must go on.

As the menace continues, the Electric Pink camera is next.

IMG_2121

IMG_2128

Since most ladies love pink color, when I took out my Electric Pink camera, Winnie’s reaction was epic. Anyway, she will probably have a hard time since pink camera straps are hard to come by and good quality ones are even more rare.

IMG_2133
Photo: Sneaking a little victory sign as Winnie finds a strap for my pink DSLR.

_SDI5539
IMG_2145
Photo: And she did found a Pink Strap!

From my above facial expression you can see that I am truly surprised. Artisan & Artist* indeed has almost every strap for every color & occassion! And the pink strap was made as tough just like the previous straps that Winnie had showed me earlier.

At this point, after 3 cameras, prank or no prank, Winnie has won me over as a customer. Her patience are commendable and Schmidt did a great job training their sales associates. Since I am halfway through my prank, I have to finish this. Next to hit will be my Crimson Red camera.

IMG_2172
Apparently my appearance with my colorful cameras has given Winnie surprises after surprises. I was wondering what will she do at the end when I told her I will need to consider before buying all the straps. At the same time, I wonder what was going through her mind facing me, this crazy guy with so many cameras in different colors wanting a strap to match each camera. However, in my mind, I was thrilled at the Artisan & Artist* straps. These are really high-end stuff with excellent material and stitchworks.

IMG_2180

The red strap Artisan & Artist* strap that Winnie selected for me has the Artisan & Artist* logo in red with a black background. The same double stitching can be seen on this strap as I examined closely. “Excellent”, I whispered quietly. It’s time for my Navy Blue camera to make it’s appearance. I told Winnie I have 2 cameras more to show her. At this point, She stopped smiling. (She must be thinking that I am crazy)

IMG_2190

IMG_2192
IMG_2193
The blue Artisan & Artist* strap selected by Winnie was a Medium Format type, this heavy duty strap eases the weight on the user’s shoulder as it “bounces” the camera off the shoulder when used. This interlooped semi woven and stitched strap is well known in the market and highly sought after by Leica users or other range-finder owners. The blue hue was a perfect match for my Navy Blue DSLR. I was later told that this strap is so strong that someone can actually hangs from it and it will not break! Wow! It’s been almost 15 minutes since the prank started and it’s time for the finale, the Black camera’s turn to make a cameo.

IMG_2204
Photo: Told Winnie that this is the last camera that I had.

After Winnie took out another Black strap for me, I beckon Benny over pretending to ask him for his opinions on Winnie’s selection. And all Benny said was “Good, Good Good”. I feel like stangling him at this point of time..
But in my mind, he is right. These are probably the best camera straps that money can buy. Good quality, handmade, seamless work of art and made to last. For those new to Artisan & Artist* products, these are made in Japan.

_SDI5597
Photo: Benny sabotaging me by saying every strap that Winnie selected is good!
(note: he is still holding the camera)

Right, so you might be able to guess what happened next. I decided to buy up the whole lot of straps.
(Benny thanks to you!)

_SDI5602

_SDI5605
Photo: The Shopping experience at Schmidt was a great one.

_SDI5608

Well, prank or not, I must say that I have made a wise choice in purchasing the whole lot of Artisan & Artist* straps.
Although these straps are not exactly cheap, but cheap things don’t last remember?

_SDI5610

This is the day that I made 2 discoveries. 1st was finding a Schmidt Marketing Flagship Store at Ngee Ann City level 5 (which I shamelessly didn’t know there’s one). And discovering Artisan & Artist* has more than just camera bags, they made high quality camera straps too!

So next time if you are in Orchard, do pop by.
(just don’t disturb the store executive Winnie)

100 Photography Keywords – in Mandarin (Chinese)

100 Photography Keywords – in Mandarin (Chinese)

canon
Photo: Just a spoofed photo of a famous DSLR brand.

11th March 2014. Singapore – With more and more Chinese nationals coming to our shores, it is important that we should know some photography terms in Mandarin (Chinese language). Personally I had taught a few China-Chinese photography students here in Singapore as well as some senior citizens who are not proficient in English. After trying to teach & explain in Mandarin for a couple of times (and after lots of senseless laughter), I am still not really good at teaching in Mandarin. Sometimes, before I can even say or explain something, I started giggling already. You can imagine the faces of the students when they see me giggling and after that, I spout out broken Mandarin so bad that they swear I was speaking French.

I have compiled some 100 Key words that we commonly used in Photography along with the chinese text beside it. This list was compiled from google, contributions from friends & students. Some make sense to me while some are totally off.

10th March 2014, Singapore – Sigma’s recent release, the super all-in-one Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM (C) has caught the attention of many users worldwide. Many photographers were taken by surprise that Sigma had the 18-200mm redesigned and rebuilt for this popular all-purpose zoom focal range lens right after 2 years since the Mark II was released. Sitting in the Contemporary Line (C), this lens had proven itself to be different from the rest of the competition since our first review. As we all know, most All-in-one zoom lenses are also made & marketed as travel lenses, so we decided to appoint a semi-professional photographer to review the Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM (C) as a Part 2 review. And we came to know that he will be travelling – perfect.

Ng Chee Seng, 36 years old had been shooting for about 4 years now. A semi-pro photographer specializing in landscape photography & portraitures, we persuaded him to bring the Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM (C) for his trip to Wenchang, Hainan in China. And he agreed. Let’s check out his account & experience of using the new Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM (C).

By Ng Chee Seng, Semi Pro Photographer (Singapore)

When I was contacted by Allan Lee, the Editor of ourshutterjourney.com, I wasn’t sure what I am getting myself into. He had recently reviewed the new Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM (C) and after learning that I was going for a trip to Wenchang, Hainan, he excitedly contacted me and asked me if I am keen to review this lens. I told him that I had never done this before and to my surprise, he actually say this is exactly what he wanted – an end user with no prior review experience to review the lens so that he can get an unbiased and fair feedback from the user point of view. Happily I agreed and we met up to collect the lens.

First Look & Handling
DSCF7758
Photo: Key information here. Review done on a Canon DSLR, the super broad, smooth & comfortable zoom ring, the Zoom lock button, the new Sigma “C” Badge, other operational buttons like the MF/AF and OS switch. Most importantly, it’s Made in Japan.

The new 2014 Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM (C) is a pretty small and light weight (430g) zoom lens. It has a standard wide (18mm) to super telephoto (200mm) focal range. I fell in love with the smooth finishing (feel) of the lens exterior (barrel) of the lens which was manufactured with the new TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) – this offers thermal expansion characteristics similar to those of aluminum and it feels expensive to the touch.

Together with the supplied Canon DSLR (from Allan), I took the lens to Wenchang, Hainan in China for a trip.

I was impressed by the very capable Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM (C). Apart from its solid built and the super smooth zooming ring, this lens packs performance too. Image sharpness is rendered across the whole focal ranges from 18mm to the super-tele range at 200mm. (see below pics).

Image Quality

At the wide angle of 18mm F3.5, it render very good sharpness at the center of the frame  but sharpness is slightly compromised at the sides of the frame.

However, after stopping down the aperture to F11, sharpness at the center frame is good but not as sharp as compared to shooting at F3.5 – but the sides of the frame became very sharp.

I personally discovered that the “sweet spot” for this lens has to be the highly-loved F5.6, sharpness is very good across the whole frame, corner to corner. If you love shooting landscape at the wide 18mm range, you will never go wrong with the aperture set to F5.6 for this lens.

At tele-end of 200m, it maintained very good sharpness across the whole frame which is seldom the case for such lenses in the past. I am very impressed by it’s capabilities to keep CA (Chromatic aberration) very low. Almost negligible, I can hardly notice any CA at 18mm with 100% crop but at 200mm, it show very minimum traces of CA (outline) lining the tree branches which to me, is very acceptable.

Focusing
I have certainly no issue with this Sigma’s fast & silent focusing. The hypersonic motor (HSM) was super quiet & focusing was “instant hit” even at 200mm. This lens focuses well for both day or night operations. The lens did a little hunting when I used it at night during low light condition which was quite common for most variable apertures zoom lenses – now which lens doesn’t hunt at low light right? On overall, I really love the blazing fast & spot on focusing.

Conclusion
After using the Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM (C) for a straight 7 days in China, I am very pleased by what this lens had delivered. Be it handling or image quality, this lens is definitely the best all-purpose lens available today. Although designed and made as a variable aperture lens, we cannot compare it with other fixed aperture zoom lens or prime lens but given its humble asking price and the overall quality, this is the best combination that money can buy.

The Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM (C) will guarantees pleasing user experience for street shooting and a great companion for oversea travel for its portability. And yes, I have booked a Nikon Mount version of this 2014 Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM (C) – and I think you should too.

Thanks Allan for giving me this great opportunity to test out this lens for my China Trip!

Ed: You are most welcome Chee Seng!
