Joby brings breakthrough design expertise with a new ultra-comfortable camera strap line

Joby is excited to announce the launch of its innovative line of comfortable, high-performance camera straps: the Joby UltraFit Sling Strap. Known for its family of best-selling, flexible GorillaPod tripods, Joby extends its technical design expertise to reinvent and refresh this essential camera accessory for shooters on-the-go. The camera straps are designed to accommodate both CSC (compact system camera) and DSLR cameras and are available in a quick-draw, cross-body design.

“We opened up the possibilities for photographers to take their cameras anywhere and position on any surface with our breakthrough tripods,” said Michael Jue, director of product development. “Now we’re thrilled to offer a line of camera straps that combines the latest technology with premium materials to provide incredible comfort and quick camera access so photographers can shoot more efficiently on-the-go. Through rigorous testing with pro photographers, we’ve designed straps that make the camera feel lighter and conveniently accessible for hours, whether you’re shooting a breathtaking landscape on a hike or capturing a moment in a crowded tourist destination.”

The Joby team conducted extensive user studies with more than 500 photography professionals and enthusiasts and pinpointed how camera straps should fit and move on the body. This exhaustive research resulted in the patent-pending UltraFit Sling Strap, with separate versions designed specifically for men and women. It is built with Joby’s exclusive UltraFit Layered-Pad Technology for lightweight support without the bulk of thick padding. An ergonomically placed pivot ring and pressure-relieving foam pad allow the strap to conform to the shoulder and torso of the body and evenly distribute the weight of the camera for long-wearing comfort.

The UltraFit Sling Strap has an innovative SpeedCinch system that secures both camera and strap close to the body to free up the photographer’s hands and keep the camera secure when shooting in busy or crowded environments. When going for the next shot, the system automatically extends the strap length so the photographer can bring the camera to eye level in one fluid and fast motion. In both versions, premium materials such as stainless steel and glass-filled nylon plastic provide superior durability and a secure connection to a camera via a ¼-20ʺ threaded accessory mount.

eBay Beware – Online Cheat “ambuslang”

This is part 3.

I have created a new Category on this site for online cheats, so do check back often for updates and be protected. Especially Sellers from eBay.

Online Cheat Profile 2:
eBay Seller ID: “ambuslang”.
Real Name: Frank Wilcox
Company Name: Nil
Seller email: zander.prime@tiscali.co.uk
Claimed Location: UK.
Telephone: Non-US Verified

Ebay7

Case:

Recently, I was on a Minolta Project which involved finding old Minolta SLRs and its compatible lenses to
run a few roles of film. Which later, most of these photos will be showcased as part of a Heritage Project.
Since most SLRs from that era comes in 50mm focal length,  I decided to source for a wide angle to
take some shots which is not really possible with the 50mm. As usual, I went to eBay.

I found a listing for on eBay for a  “Makinon F2.8 Prime Lens – Minolta MD Fit” from a seller by the name of
“ambuslang” and found that he has this lens for sale which is perfect. And the price is reasonable for a lens of
this age. He described the lens as

Makinon 28mm f2.8 wide angle camera lens, manual focus Minolta MD fitting ……….. GREAT COSMETIC CONDITION AND WORKING ORDER ……… QUITE POSSIBLY NOT BEEN USED AT ALL. NO FUNGUS, SCRATCHES OR DUST ON OR INSIDE THE LENSES. Comes with original box and packaging.

Ebay
Ebay Ebay3

So I decided to get it from this guy and get it fast. I clicked “Buy it Now” and paid for it within the next
few minutes.

Ebay5
Ebay6

The parcel came. Excitedly, I opened the box, upon careful inspection, I found;

1) 2 big pieces of dirt were inside the elements. you cannot remove these dirt unless you dismantle the lens.
2) a 1cm scratch across the front element visible when you turn the lens 45 degree when standing directly under a light source.
3) on the focusing ring near the aperture counters, there is an obvious dent suggesting this lens had been dropped before.
4) fungus marks on the inside of rear lens caps.

Just imagine how disappointed I am. So I wrote to “ambuslang”.

Ebaya1

I wrote and described the problem as clearly as possible.
And guess what?
Check out his reply below.

Ebay2

He denied all the way claiming the lens was checked by him and there was nothing wrong with the lens.
He claimed no scratch on the lens and I believed he was not careful or, he does not know how to assess
a lens or he must have a serious case of short-sightings.

How can anyone missed a 1 cm scratch? And not to mention the 2 pieces of visible dirt inside the
lens. The dent was quite hidden so I am not blaming him for anything, but what about the fungus on the rear lens cap?
In his reply, he was quoted as “….. I am sorry but I cannot be held responsible for it.” And he now expects me to ship back the lens, at my own costs for him to “inspect”. After reading his reply, will you even dare to send back the lens?
What if after he received the lens then he tells you he did not? Such a defensive and dodgy person you dare to buy anything from this person? Since this is small money, I have decided that after the project, I will ship the lens back
to his joker. I don’t even want my money back, I had just done charity.

Photographers, if you are searching on ebay for photographic items and come across this seller “ambuslang”,
be careful.

You have been warned.

Sigma DP3 Merrill – First to Review in Singapore!

DSC00375
Picture: Sigma DP3 Merrill (left) & Sigma DP2 Merrill (Right back)

February 2013 – The Sigma flagship compact sees a 3rd incarnation – the Sigma DP3 Merrill, which is more
than just a cosmetic update as many had perceived to be. Although the DP3 uses & share about 70%
identical parts from the DP2, the new DP3 had a different lens, a new focusing engine that resulted in
fast focusing plus face detection, a tweaked processor that records faster than its predecessors and it is
“macro-enabled” now. Key specs after the jump.

DSC00382
Picture: Sigma DP2 Merrill (left) & Sigma DP3 Merrill (Right back) You cannot tell each other apart
except the lens size and the printed “DP2” or “DP3”.

Many users will not be able to immediately tell the difference between the DP3 with the older DP2 since
they shares close to 70% parts. The first thing that might catch your attention will be the lens cap. The DP2 came
with the standard Sigma pinch cap from the “150-500mm era” while the DP3 came with the “35mm F1.4 ART New Type”
in Sigma’s language. This also brings the flagship compact’s look closer to be in line with the Sigma’s global vision
(Re-inventing & Re-innovating all the lenses in the current line up) – which all the new lenses under the new line
will be supplied with caps of this design.

OK, so the lens are different – sound stupid but the main reason why Sigma release a DP Twin is also for
the main purpose for suiting different photographers since the 3 DPs are all very similar. The DP3 with its
50mm F2.8 Macro (75mm at 35mm format) are an excellent portrait range and it is also a Macro lens at it.
For me, I am one of those weirdos that likes to shoot landscape with telephoto lenses and this lens will be great
for my style of shooting. (shooting buildings with telephoto lenses give super straight structures with little
distortions). The DP2’s 30mm (45mm at 35mm format) are really made for general photography like street photography , etc and the DP1’s 19mm (28mm at 35mm format) are more suited for landscape and interior’s stuff.

So how does the camera perform?

Since the supplied fixed lens is “Macro-enabled”, this review wouldn’t be complete without
a close up shot using the DP3. I spotted a really, really small flower by the road.
See the next 2 photos. 🙂

And to give you an idea how small the above flower was, I added my finger in the next shot.

Did you went “WOW!”? I hope you did. The Sigma DP3 Merrill does live up to its flagship status.
Apart from the solidly built exterior which feels really “expensive” but feels good to the hands, internally
Sigma had upgraded the focusing and added face detection so that DP3 focuses much faster than the DP2 & DP1.
Recording is a tad faster now when compared to the older DPs too. I had used the DP2 & DP1 and I remembered
the “Recording” blinking light will go on for a while (a longer-than-usual while) after every shot and that
kind of irritates me. But the DP3 had changed that perception as the recording is now closer to my acceptable
level. That is a plus point for me personally.

The Sigma’s DP series are designed and made for professionals & serious enthusiasts as a light carry-about alternative.
Boasting a large sensor (APS-C) in a compact body, Sigma was the first manufacturer to do this before the competition came out with near-equivalents – go do your research. The 46mp Foveon X3 sensor was/is the first & one of its kind since its debut and still remained relevant till today. A closer look at the DP series will probably remind you of a Leica M3 from many angles. The design and layout and everything else in between just complete the perfect package as the “Professional’s Side Kick”.

Go get yours today.

Olympus TG-2 – Any Tougher?

IMGP8255
Picture: Both Olympus TG-1 & TG-2 were greeted by torrential rain at Cebu, Philippines.

Most of you would have remembered my review on the Olympus’s flagship all-weather TOUGH TG-1. When Olympus told me about the replacement TOUGH TG-2 weeks ago, I was kind of lost. Don’t get me wrong, I love the TG-1.

The TG-1 was a weather monster, probably the best outdoor camera that one can buy these days – and to replace the best, this is a really tough one (pardon the pun). I remembered how I swam with the TG-1, how I intentionally dropped it several times (to see if the camera will split into pieces and it didn’t) and also to the point of placing the TG-1 inside my freezer beside the Haagen Daz. I totally abused it and the TG-1 emerged unharmed. Looking at the TG-2 gave me mixed feelings, but decided to abuse the TG-2 anyway.

I was heading out to Philippines for some photography assignments and I decided to bring along the Olympus TG-2 together with the TG-1. And since it had been raining intermittently at the city I am heading to, I reckon it will be also a good opportunity to test out the TG-2 – side by side with its tough siblings.

First findings reveals both TG-1 & TG-2 are essentially the same camera. The same feel, the same look (I played spot-the-difference with these 2 TOUGHs), same handling and the same picture quality. Only the eagle-eyed will noticed that some buttons had switched positions, some functions had found their way to the main dial, apart from that, I think the engineers behind the TG-2 had decided to beef up the substance more than giving us a cosmetic makeover.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Above Picture: Photo by Olympus TG-2, Cruising Loboc River, Philippines.
Technically, there are differences. To start, the TG-2 now comes with a higher internal memory at 22mb, up from 7.9 on the TG-1. This is useful when you are the furthest end at Siberia and your SD card ran out of space. The Super Macro mode on the TG-2 had been given the most attention in my view, the TG-2 now is capable of shooting microscopic photos, a first in the world and that no current cameras of this class can do this. Both versions of the TG use the same lithium battery Olympus LI-90B but for some really strange reasons, the same battery with the same charge actually lasted longer on the TG-2 than the TG-1.

On the main features, the TG-2 now dives deeper to a depth of 15 meters from 12 meters.
For those who don’t dive, 3 meters is a lot when you are down there at the ocean. On the shockproof rating, the TG-2 had increased its tolerance slightly to 2.1 meter from 2 meter. Very humble numbers but it does toughen the TG-2, to move it away further from the competition.

Apart the above points that I had highlighted, everything else is the same.

What was previously impossible with compacts is now possible with the TG-2. This little monster has MICROSCOPE MODE to capture every possible detail of your subjects. A marvel combo that deploys the optical zoom PLUS the super resolution zoom, macro shooting capability equivalent to 7 to 14x (35mm conversion) are now possible with the TG-2 from an unbelievable distance of just 1 cm. Yes you read it right! 1 cm. Capture all the details not easily seen by the human eye with superb clarity, and you can now closer to the microscopic world with the TG-2-easily!

Above Picture: Photo by Olympus TG-2, Tribe Kids Jumping into Loboc River, Philippines. The TG-2 gotten 10 frames for this scene.

In summary, personally I will not view the TG-2 as the TG-1’s direct replacement. Rather, I will look at it as a souped-up version, a higher-spec version that is giving more bangs for those who demands more (think along the line of a regular Honda Civic & a Honda Civic Type-R). It will make sense for Olympus to even sell the TG-1 & TG-2 side by side as I feel that both cameras will appeal to different groups of buyers. The TG-1 is still a very favorable choice for many moving up the scale from basic compacts & mid- range weather-proof cameras while the TG-2 appeals to the extreme who demand nothing less than excellent. The TG-2 is for people who challenge the elements, travels to the ends of the continents, prefer extreme climate change and the toughest of environments.

With those requirements, they need Olympus TG-2.

Nothing Less.

Exclusive Visit – Pentax Plant, Philipppines

SONY DSC
Picture: Pentax Factory at Mactan Economic Zone 1, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu Province, Philipines.

Getting Invited to a camera factory is like a Kid being given an All-Day Ticket to an Amusement Park.
APDS, the local agent for Pentax & Ricoh had kindly arranged & facilitated this exclusive factory tour to Pentax’s plant at
Philippines. We are grateful to be invited.

At the factory, we were given an overview presentation of Pentax’s history (which I am very familiar with) and were shown
some really classified information about the company and its operations. Mr. Shinichiro Kuroda, Manager for Pentax’s Business
Management Group & Mr. Yutaka Konuma, President for Pentax Ricoh Imaging Products (Phils) Corp was very kind and open
to explain to us the benefits of moving Pentax’s manufacturing operations fully to Philippines, which after understanding
the reason behind – make lots of economic sense.

And life at Pentax had taken a new leash of life after Hoya Corporation sold Pentax to Ricoh in 2011. The K-30 is the 1st camera
that were innovated after the change and during launch, it is also the same year that Konuma-san took office as the President at
Pentax in Philippines. The Pentax K-30 had done well and still doing very well.

Pentax enjoys huge market shares in Japan & Europe but not exactly in Asia. Konuma-san explained that one of the reason for the
move is “to be closer” to Asia so as to strengthen the market shares in this region which is predominantly the “C” & “N” territories.
This is also to instill confidence for agents distributing Pentax products in this part of the world. Smart move.

SONY DSC

After the presentation, we were taken into the heart of the manufacturing plant and visited every
single segment of the production line, from programming to assembly, from packaging to getting
the cameras ready for export – this is an eye-opener!

My heart was thumping fast and man, I was like a kid pointing out to familiar items and talking non-stop.

Absolute care is taken at every level of the production from primary stage to the final product in the clean room where
every worker is donning hair cover, dust free gowns, anti-dust shoes and gloves. Really looks like a scene from Star Wars.
Instead of light-sabers, everywhere was Pentax Cameras! Apparently photography was not allowed in the facility,
so every minute spent inside the factory, is an experience that could be a once-in-a-life-time affair.

There are various showcases displaying Pentax’s current & past models which I am thrilled to see them on display aka “live archive”
style. I was surprised to see a clinic right inside the factory – which Kuroda-san later explained that this is one of the requirement
set by the local government to have a clinic for staff strength over the size of 500. Pentax employs over 1300 staff at this plant,
so there are 3 Doctors on Duty!!! Speaking of welfare!

I have so much to say and so much praises to sing but I am afraid that I might spill sensitive information so I shall stop here.

A BIG Thanks to Konuma-san & Kuroda-san for inviting Shutter Journey SGP to Pentax’s plant.
This memory shall be with us for as long as we live. (or whenever I use my Pentax Cameras :))

“Konuma-san & Kuroda-san, till we meet again, please take good care!” – Allan Lee

Special Thanks to APDS, our local Distributor for Pentax & Ricoh Imaging products for arranging
and making this visit happened.

Sigma 10mm F2.8 EX DC HSM Fisheye – Extreme Perspectives

Many of my students once asked me. Is it worth to invest in a fisheye lens for an APS-C size camera body?
If yes, which one? That was a tough question. That goes into the equation of costs versus picture quality issue versus the angle of coverage.
As the owner of several Fisheye lenses from various brands and for several systems, having a fisheye is an added bonus. It gives an ultra-wide
angle of view and the round up distortions on the sides creating interesting perspectives that normal lenses can’t do. Although some may argue
with me that most cameras today comes with built in or digital filters that usually includes the fisheye, well dun be fooled. Yes, you get the fisheye effect, but what the camera did was to take your original photo and simply “Bloat” up the centre, I believed most of you who are reading this may already start to have a pretty unpleasant mental picture of what I am talking about – yes, simply aweful.

I went on a trip recently to Philippines covering a few projects at the same time. I was really excited & happy when I was issued a Sigma 10mm F2.8 EX DC HSM Fisheye for this trip by Sigma Marketing (Singapore). This is one of the compulsory lens to have when travelling to places with ancient old buildings and churches. Simply perfect.

The Sigma 10mm Fisheye is a diagonal fisheye lens. Means you get the full coverage from corner to corner unlike
circular fisheye lenses. Depending the system you are using, you get an almost equivalent angle of view which is about
15-16mm on a 35mm full frame system. (Now you know why most brands has a 15mm or 16mm Fisheye for their system)

This ultra wide gives architectures, outside or interior a creative touch. A little lens as it is, this solid built lens weights a
mere 475gm, pretty sensible making it favorable to have it in any travelling photographer’s bag. And it focus down right
to 13cm (although Sigma claims 13.5cm).

IMGP8269
Picture: A Mass is going on inside the Basilica Menor del Santo Niño, Philippines.

The 10mm fisheye closes from F2.8 to F22 and it is a 7 blader. Those new to Sigma, “DC” in the lens code means this lens is made
specially for APS-C cameras. As expected from Sigma’s “EX” line of lenses, the lens comes with the company’s signature “Super Coating”
and to sweeten the deal, this Fisheye comes with hyper-sonic motor (HSM) for ultra fast, seamless and quiet focusing. It’s like the
king of Fisheye for APS-C cameras. (Other similar focal length Fisheye lenses from other makers are either in Manual Focus Only, running
on noisy back-dated step motor or loudest of them all – the micro motor.)

Note the full coverage of the church on the above photo? Now look at the foreground to see how tight the distance
is from where I am standing to the wall of the church. A typical 14mm lens will not be able to cover the whole length
of the church too. The 10mm Fisheye saved the day.

Soon, I found myself on a floating buffet restaurant having lunch while cruising down the Loboc River.
It was a pretty cramped floating platform made into a Tourists lunch place but the food was decent and
the Loboc River was calm and peaceful. I decided to snap a shot of this floating restaurant and the “regular”
lens I was using was not able to cover the full width of the boat as I would like to have the shot showing
not just the restaurant, but also the river views from outside the boat – the Sigma 10mm Fisheye to the rescue.

Interestingly, the Sigma 10mm F2.8 EX DC HSM Fisheye came packaged with a “Circular Adaptor”. When fitted to the lens,
it gives the user the effect of a circular fisheye by blocking the “diagonal-horizon” creating a photo of what a circular fisheye
might produce. See the below photos.

Interesting eh? Apart from the adaptor, the Sigma 10mm F2.8 EX DC HSM Fisheye comes standard with a good
quality carrying pouch, paperworks and lots of fun and creativity at your finger tips. Still wondering which Fisheye
lens to get for your APS-C camera?

Look no further, the Sigma 10mm F2.8 EX DC HSM Fisheye is Absolutely worth your every Fish Dollar.

My Lowepro Diary (Part 2)

my trusty companion in photography, the Lowepro Pro Roller X300.

Working trip working trip. Time to pack again.
We got invited to Pentax’s Factory in Cebu, Philippines by Mr. Shinichiro Kuroda (better known as Kuroda-san)
for an exclusive tour of Pentax’s production plant. This exclusive trip is made possible by APDS, the local distributor for Pentax.
Apart from the Pentax Factory Tour, this is also a review trip for
– NEW Pentax K-5 MarkII with 18-55mm WR
– Sigma 10mm EX DC Fisheye
– Olympus TOUGH TG-2.

Looks like I have got a lot on my plate this time. And I will be doing some other personal projects at the same time with other Pentax Bodies & Lenses, plus all the accessories, chargers, etc, I found myself staring at the Lowepro Pro Roller X300.

FB00229
Photo: Gears to be Packed for this working trip.
Photo by: Yu Ling, Sub Editor (Travel)

Gears to be packed:
01 x Pentax K-5 MarkII
01 x Pentax K-X White
01 x Pentax K-X Red
01 x Pentax K-R Pink
01 x Olympus TOUGH TG-1
01 x Olympus TOUGH TG-2
01 x Pentax SMC DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR
01 x Pentax SMC DA 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 AL White
01 x Pentax SMC DA 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 AL Red
01 x Pentax SMC DA 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 AL Pink
01 x Pentax SMC FA 28-90mm F3.5-5.6
01 x Pentax SMC DA 35mm F2.4 AL White
01 x Pentax Mount Phoenix 100-300mm F5.6
01 x Pentax Mount – Sun 85-210mm F4.5
01 x Pentax Mount – Sigma 10mm F2.8 EX DC HSM Fisheye
01 x Holga Manual Pentax Flash Pink
01 x Nissin Manual Pentaxt Flash White
24 x AA Rechargeable Batteries
+ other little knick knacks like spare memory cards, blower, lenspens, cleaning cloth etc.

Now this is a super load of photographic gears right? The Lowepro Pro Roller X300 swallows them up with a burp. (Pardon the pun)
With some quick configuration of the paddings and sensible arrangement, everything is packed nicely into the Lowepro.
I know I had said this before but still, I must say that I feel very safe travelling with my gears in Lowepro bags because the paddings
are study while gentle on the gears without scratching or having the gears to rub against each other while on the move. Photographers
who have been on the road will know what I am saying. 🙂

See how I have packed the travel inventory in the X300. Totally amazing!

SONY DSC

Photo by: Yu Ling, Sub Editor (Travel)

As the overall size of the X300 is slightly bigger than what our local authorities allows as carry-on luggage onto the planes, I am glad
that the X300 is a “transformer”. First I pull out the built-in back stand and have the bag half laid.

SONY DSC
Photo: The Lowepro Pro Roller X300 comes with built-in stand.
Photo by: Yu Ling, Sub Editor (Travel)

I can easily remove the “insides” by a zip and pulls out a Back Pack that was “embedded” all along inside the roller hard case.
Although another brand, “TT” that I once used has the same function, the capacity cannot match my needs. That’s another story anyway.
So, after separating the back pack and the roller case, I can just easily check-in the roller case. No issues at all!

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

So if you are travelling on a photography expedition soon and doing reviews like me all over the world, the Lowepro Pro Roller X300
is the bag you should consider using as airport authorities all over the world has different requirements on the checked-in luggages, the
X300 has the versatility to fill most airport requirements PLUS, it gives added safety and assurance to your precious gears (or loaned review
sets). Oh, the front panel of the X300, if you are not bringing a laptop with you, that space is very useful for passport, boarding pass and some
purchases from the Duty Free Shops. Don’t Ask what I bought.

Off to Cebu in a couple of hours.

Olympus Stylus XZ-2 vs XZ-1

A while ago, most of you would have remembered our little adventure to Thailand (Not Honeymoon mind you) right after we finished our Wedding with just Olympus cameras. (You can read about the Olympus trip here, here & here) Among those Olys that we brought to Thailand,
is the OIympus XZ-1. A fast aperture (F1.8) compact that came packed with interesting features and lots of art filters. I remembered having lots of fun with it during the trip. Then Olympus Imaging Singapore recently notified me that the XZ-1 had been replaced – by XZ-2 of course.

I requested for the review unit for XZ-2 and made a special request to draw out the XZ-1 at the same time. Here, I have them side by side.

IMG_8327
Picture: Olympus XZ-2 Stylus (Left) & Olympus XZ-1 (Right)

On first look, many of you would have noticed that the XZ-2 now carries the “Stylus” branding again while this was
obviously missing from the XZ-1. OIympus added a grip to the XZ-2 bringing it closer to the looks of the EP (Pen) series
product line and the XZ-2 is more chunkier (I like) than the XZ-1. Probably my hands are used to heavier cameras like the Olympus E-5
but the XZ-2 feels perfectly weighted on my hand this time as compare to the XZ-1 which I once loved.

IMG_8330-vert
Picture: Olympus XZ-1 (Top) & Olympus XZ-2 Stylus (Bottom)

One of the key feature that I like about the XZ -1 was the Aperture ring which is fitted at the lens collar and user
can just change the aperture value by simply turning the ring ala old school style which was pretty cool. And now,
the XZ-2 comes with an additional Lock/Unlock switch for the aperture ring and on top of that, right on the
centre of the switch, there’s even a “Fn” button that gives user quick access to shooting menus – how thoughtful!
The other visible difference from the front view is probably the move to using triangle strap lugs for the neck strap
reminishing the retro feel and also again – closer to the Pens.

IMG_8335
Picture: Olympus XZ-2 with the tiltable screen fully angled.

Tiltable LCD Screen – This is a very useful feature that most manufacturers will try to include in their cameras,
and having this on the XZ-2 makes the most sense. Since most of its “bigger brothers” all comes standard with
such a screen, why not the XZ-2 right?

It is pretty obvious that I fell in love with the XZ-2, so how does the camera perform? Let’s take a look at the un-edited
photos produced by the 2 cameras. (commentaries after the jump.) It is understood that both cameras were set to the same settings.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Picture: Top Photo shot by XZ-1 & Bottom Photo Shot by XZ-2.

From the photo above, I noticed the XZ-1 registered a reddish hue on the vegetations but managed to retain
the sky’s hues, but the XZ-2 recorded a more vibrant & accurate color reproduction on the vegetations but sacrificed
the pale blue from the sky. I believed the XZ-2 is engineered this way to ensure contrasty and sharper photos while
keeping the overall exposure lively. I Like this.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Picture: Top Photo shot by XZ-1 & Bottom Photo Shot by XZ-2.

Color is the key here people. Looking at the photos direct out from the camera, the XZ-2 seems to have “grown”
very much making itself more appealing to the various consumers. The picture quality is awesome and for
some strange reasons, the contrasts of the XZ-2 seems to be more alluring. It produces very lively photos which
most people will like.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Picture: Top Photo shot by XZ-1 & Bottom Photo Shot by XZ-2.

Trying one of the staple feature of Olympus’s higher-end compacts – the Super Macro Mode. The 2 photos above
were shot with this Mode.  Both set to same settings, but the XZ-1 seems to be running on a much shallow DOF
than the XZ-2 which it picked a smaller aperture to shoot this scene. I have no comments on this as I love both
photos just the same, I will leave it to you for this.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Picture: Top Photo shot by XZ-1 & Bottom Photo Shot by XZ-2.

The 2 photos above from the same scene appears to be largely identical. But on closer look,
the photo from the XZ-2 has better color reproduction with its almost exact color saturation level
as opposed the photo by XZ-1 which on closer scrutiny, looks slightly washed.

On overall, I feel that XZ-1 and XZ-2 are very different cameras. Although one is a replacement, as a photographer, the “feel” of
operating the camera is important and largely personal. Given a choice, I would own to both the XZ-1 & XZ-2 and I do have specific
roles for each of them to play.

So if you are new to the X Series from Olympus, or owns the XZ-1, or upgrading from a basic compact, or simply need  a compact camera when you can leave your DSLR at home, or wants no frill but able to capture high quality photos, get the XZ-2.

If you are still feeling reserved, no really sure if the XZ-2 can serve your needs at the moment, you can head down to Olympus’s showroom
to try out both the XZ-1 & XZ-2 (Don’t forget the XZ-10 if you are buying on a show string). As I said earlier, the XZ-1 is also a great camera too!

Want to know (technically) what had been improved on the XZ-2 from the XZ-1?
Read it here about the XZ-2 or find out about the XZ-1 here.

Some behind the scenes photos by our sub Editor, my lovely wife Yu Ling.

Unexpected Access with Sigma 17-70mm 2013 Edition

The Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM | C is the 1st Lens that is to be refreshed under the “C” category. The “C” simply stands for Contemporary, which is one of the 3 new line of lenses that Sigma had re-categorized under the new direction by the optical company that is known as the “Sigma’s Global Vision”. (See end of page for “A”, “C” & “S” details) Those new to Sigma’s range of lenses might not know, the 17-70mm had been one of the most popular all-purpose”  lens among APS-C users since the company launched it’s first version a decade ago. This “C” or 2013 editon is actually the Mark3 to be exact – however different.

SONY DSC

Photo: by Yu Ling

With a superb focal length range and close-up capability, the 17-70mm F2.8-4 is equipped with Sigma’s super fast Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) and an Optical Stabilizer (OS) for easy handheld photography. The HSM is extremely silent while giving this lens fast autofocusing and the OS works seamlessly to compensate camera shake.

Based on the equivalence of 35mm format, the 17-70mm gives you an effective wide angle of 25.5mm (Sigma & Nikon APS-C Bodies/ 27.2mm on Canon APS-C Bodies) to 105mm (Sigma & Nikon APS-C Bodies/ 112mm on Canon APS-C Bodies) focal range on APS-C cameras covering from Landscape to Portraits, this is one ultimate travel lens or one ultimate events photography lens.

External Lens construction of the 17-70mm is now made by using the new TSC material (Thermally Stable Composite), just like the Sigma 35mm F1.4 EX DG HSM | A, the company’s first Art lens. The material actually feels good and smooth to the touch. It gives the same  “expensive feel” like other high-end brand similar to Carl Zeiss’s build quality which I am totally blown away. The zoom ring feels nice to the hands and handling the lens feels like a very well-sorted equipment when in use. The buttons are nicely placed making the use of this lens enjoyable.

If you think this is just a cosmetic remake? No way. Sigma made this lens with Two FLD glass elements, similar to Canon’s fluorite, plus  the additional one SLD element to reduce CA (color aberration) to a minimum. Sigma ensures that this “C” lens is serving the category as it’s “APS-C Flagship” by having all the bests and putting them together into this lens.

OK, enough of words, let’s take a look at the photos produced from the Sigma 17-70mm. I used it on my old trusty Canon EOS 500D since the review unit came in Canon EF-Mount. I got lucky, I was doing some site work for a client at Singapore Cruise Centre and I have my Canon 500D + Sigma 17-70mm with me.  After finishing my work, I took the opportunity to test out the lens. So much for an “Unexpected Access”.

This is a full size cruise ship and I wasn’t even shooting it at 17mm, just 20mm! Then I walked to the end of
the service berth just beside the sea and shot this scene from the end of the Berth.

I was like “WOW”! At 17mm, (as opposed to most APS-C Kit lenses that came as 18mm), this 1 mm difference plays
a huge difference when you add in tthe actual crop factor. The wide angle of view here is indeed very useful if
the user is a landscape person or one that does lots of architectural stuff.

Since the Sigma 17-70mm is made as the “All-in-One” zoom, I tested out the different focal length at the same scene.
The above photo was shot at 35mm and I was amazed by the sharpness and details captured on the photo.
I wanted to push it further.

Keppel 70mm

At mid-telephoto range of 70mm, the lens still produces sharp and contrasty photo, this is indeed the “Gem” of
APS-C cameras. I turned around where I was standing and I saw the below scene.

This scene calls for a definite 17mm. I shot it at F4 just to satisfy myself that this lens does rock at wider aperture.
And it never disappoint me. The above photo is a great testament how competent the 17-70mm is when it comes
to the performance department.

I took a shot at one of the cruise ship. Still at F4, I got the below photo.

I decided to do a direct 50% crop on the above photo and see the cropped out section below.

Sharp as hell – that was what rain through my mind when I was looking at the photo after cropping. This lens is no
joke. Sigma is dead serious about the APS-C market is all I can say. And since this is also the ultimate travel lens, and
my wife Yu Ling (Also Sub Editor for this site) was with me at the time of review, I decided to try out the portrait capability
of this lens.

I will let the photos “Speak” for themselves below.

Seeing the photos from above, I am totally SOLD on this super APS-C lens. The Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM

Olympus Stylus XZ-2 First Run – Featuring Guest Reviewer Terri Tan

SONY DSC
Picture: Terri Tan, Guest Reviewer, Olympus XZ-2

My Brother-in-Law, Allan LEE – the Editor of this site who is a commercial photographer, a photography instructor &
an avid photograhy gear review editor – is no doubt a camera freak. The whole family knows about his huge
collection of cameras & lenses. Recently, he came home with a few Olympus Cameras and I knew he is reviewing new
cameras again. Unexpectedly, he passed me one of the camera and told me “just shoot with this and pass me the photos”.
Since a family outing was planned for the coming weekend, I took the camera from him and decide to try out this new camera.

The camera is an Olympus Stylus XZ-2. According to Allan, this is the replacement for the previous much raved about XZ-1.
I have totally no idea what was he talking about but as for me, a new interesting journey begins – with the XZ-2.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

While on a cruise down Singapore River, a tourist family were on the same boat. Their little curious toddler
was pretty restless during the cruise and I took out the XZ-2 and took a shot. The camera was set to “iAuto”
which I presumed is the regular “Automatic Mode” in most cameras. The focusing was fast and precise and
I managed to get a decent shot of the little boy – still trying to climb the bench inside the bumpboat.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Looking out of the boat, the scenary that was very familiar to me somehow looks different this time. Probably
it’s because I am now looking at the same scenary from a very different perspective or angle, I am inside a
tourist cruise boat! Then I saw another cruise boat coming from the opposite direction and I quickly took a shot.
From the photo above, you will know that I didn’t missed the shot and the photo captured was tack sharp and
so full of details. I can never take photos like this before with my other digital cameras.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We moved on to Gardens by the Bay after the cruise. I saw the above scene while walking in to the Gardens and decided
to take a quick shot. I was very happy to report that the photo has a very balanced exposure and nicely contrasted the
scene details. I was expecting a blown out photo (or what you guys call “over-exposed”) but nope, the photo above
was shot and came out beautiful. I am very impressed with the XZ-2 by now.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I tried shooting some flowers and you can see from the photo above, the petals of the flower are nicely exposed,
sharp with lots of details and the color quality is excellent! I am not a photographer like my Brother–in-law (Allan)
or my sister (Yu Ling) who does wedding stuff, but I can recognize a good photo when I see one and here it is!
This is probably the best flower shot I had ever shot!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I like the Olympus XZ-2 probably due to the compact size and its weight, it is very light and easy to handle.
And its overall design looks more like a very high end bridge camera rather than a regular compact.
I particularly like the aperture ring which I can turn to override some settings in “P” mode. (Taught by Allan).
The touch focus shutter function was very refreshing too.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This plant above was in a shade, darker than the sun light that was outside the dome. This is inside the Flower Dome
so light is diffused but shooting the XZ-2 is a breeze. It seems like the camera can sense that the surroundings are
darker and somehow, it auto compensates the light. As I said, I am not a photographer so I do not really know how things work inside the camera, but I am very happy to get the above shot without much effort.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

While inside Cloud Forest, I saw this waterfall and decided to take another shot. The artificial waterfall was much darker
than what the above photo shows. When I loaded this photo to my PC, I went “WOW”! Every details I can remember
of this place are captured, every details!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The angle of view is pretty wide, I can actually do a bit of landscape with it without any problem.
Shooting had never been so easy before. I know there are a lot more functions available inside the mighty XZ-2,
but since this is a camera review, importantly I know what people are looking for – good picture quality and
ease of use. Because I am such a person too. 🙂

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I had so much fun with the XZ-2 and I am considering a purchase too. The Olympus XZ-2 is so lovable, a nice little camera packed with tons of
goodies, need me to say more? 🙂

Rounding up this review, I would like to thank Allan for giving me this opportunity to review the XZ-2
in the most layman view (as what he calls it) & Olympus Imaging Singapore too.

I heard that Allan will be doing a XZ-1 vs XZ-2. Maybe his review article will appeals to the serious enthusiasts, do look out for it.

The Versatile Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM MACRO

ALNL7258
Picture: The Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM MACRO on a Sony 230.

We would like to be honest about this. This is our 2nd Sigma 105mm Macro. We used to have the previous version which we totally hate.
The focusing take forever and the noise from the older micro motor simply scares away every insect that we tried to shoot.
We were so pissed with that old 105mm macro that we decided to give it away.

Recently, Sigma Marketing Singapore told us that they have a new 105mm Macro lying around and would like me to put it to good use following
my review on the New Sigma APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM. So without expecting anything or telling Sigma Marketing Singapore how much we hated the previous version, I took the lens and was pleasantly shocked at what’s inside the box. The newer Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro looks totally different from the version that we use to have and hated, I dare to say that this new version is like a new lens built from scratch. First, Sigma had dumped the old lens body coating that deteriotes with time and gave us that “Sticky” feel, the new lens barrel is smooth and nice to the touch and it feels like some of the more expensive equivalents out there.

ALNL7259
Picture: The Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM MACRO on a Sony 230.

Apart from the cosmetic overhaul, the lens now comes with HSM & OS which the previous version lacks. This unit that we gotten is for Sony Alpha A-Mount and the HSM is as fast & quiet as the Sony’s proprietory Super Sonic Motor (SSM). Shooting with it, we are happy to report that Auto focus is blazing fast and accurate. I am not exaggerating here, but having owned the previous version and now using this version, we were blown away with its performance. Photos turned out tack sharp and every details is captured as how a macro lens should be expected of and the colors are rendered very nicely – thanks to the SLD Glass among the elements group and the Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating that ensures all photos are well toned and no details is lost.

The new 105mm comes with a 9 blades aperture that gives indecent creamy background blur even when stopped down to F8, this is crazy by any close-up standards and it has a good minimum focusing distance of only 30cm (although Sigma claimed 31.2cm). Let’s look at the photos loaded direct from the camera that were shot with this lens by our Sub-Editor Yu Ling.

Impressed with the photo? We feel that this 105mm Macro gives photographers a great alternative to the proprietory brands as well
as other 3rd party manufacturers on offer. Professional & serious photographers are likely to go for picture quality, price and lens quality
rather than be a brand fanatic. This popular macro range (from 90mm to 105mm) are very useable for many other genres apart from
shooting close-ups, for those that are new to macro lenses, this range is superb for portraitures too, and remember the 9 blades aperture?
Your bokehs will be excellent! This lens is made compact and light so it makes travelling with it a breeze and it will find a place in your
camera bag anytime. Our verdict?

We Love This Lens~!!

My Lowepro Diary (Part 1)

my new companion in photography, the Lowepro Pro Roller X300.

IMG_5339
Photo: The Lowepro Pro Roller X300 arrives at my home.
(Pardon the Photo Quality as this photo was shot with iPhone)

As a photography instructor & commercial photographer, there are many times when I am faced with a situation like “one-bag-cannot-fit all” or when I am moving bulk of equipments and I simply have to split my equipments into many carriers and bags. The problem is, I only have a pair of hands. And with all my equipments in many bags, there is also the possibility of losing a bag or 2 in the process of transportation.

Apart from my studio bags which carries my strobes and light stands, the other biggest bag that I have for my camera & lenses is the ThinkTank AirPort Addict. And I have since “outgrown” that capacity in my line of work. And within a year with frequent uses, the ThinkTank has started to show signs of heavy wear & tear. That prompted me to get a bigger and better equipment bag that can out-carry, outlast & even outlives the ThinkTank that can safely transport my equipments and more equipments at the same time.

As usual, I went to my favorite photography store – Cathay Photo. They are probably the best “Photography Problem Solvers” as far as I can remember when I first stepped into Cathay Photo in year 2001. When I presented my need for a bigger capacity bag, I was answered promptly by one of the sales specialists to go for the ultimate carrier – the Lowepro Pro Roller X300. This is the largest flagship roller bag by Lowepro.

Needless to say, instantly I fell in love with it and the next minute, I was already driving home with the stylish looking X300. I shall refrain blasting about the specs here as you can check it out yourself over at http://www.lowepro.com.sg/  instead, I have this idea of showing everyone on how to maximize the carrying capacity, the configurations, the various uses and the special features via this series of articles which I had named it – “My Lowepro Diary”.

An immediate task on hand, I have a booking for a Portraiture shoot & a Macro Class this weekend and I will not be returning home for the next few days. This calls for a “heavy packing” and the Pro Roller X300 comes in really handy this time. Instead of packing my portrait gears into a bag and have all the macro gears into another bag, this time, all the gears that I need for the weekend are all packed nicely into the X300. That means, I only have the X300 & the Strobe bag, how neat is that?

Gears to be packed:
01 x Canon EOS 1D MarkIV
01 x Canon EOS 5D MarkII
01 x Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM
01 x Sigma 70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro
01 x Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro
01 x Sigma 150mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro
01 x Sigma 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro
01 x Canon 580EXII
01 x Canon MT-24EX
40 x AA Rechargeable Batteries
04 x spare batteries for (2 for 5D2 & 2 for 1D4)
+ other little knick knacks like blower, lenspens, cleaning cloth etc.

DSC06718small
Pic: Large cameras like the Canon 1D MarkIV & 5D MarkII are Dwarves in the X300.

This is how I had configured the paddings/ dividers to fit all the gears in.
*Some items are stacked thus visible due to the incredible depth of X300.
*Note how thick the paddings is. (Now look at those inside your ThinkTank.)

DSC06722small
Pic: Super Large Lenses like the Sigma 180mm Macro, the 150mm Macro looks small here.

Neat isn’t it? I specifically like the customizable & thick paddings which I am sure that in the event of a fall, these paddings will do wonders in protecting my equipments from shock and knocks. I shall be back again with more varying configurations and more features of the Lowepro X300 once I discover them – myself.

Meantime, should you be interested to know more about my other Lowepro bags (see below list), how I use them and for what purposes, please feel free to drop me a note at media_world@live.com , I will be glad to share with you as well as to advice you how to pack your gears correctly and using all available space at the same time.

Apart from this new Pro Roller X300, the other Lowepro bags that I own:
– Adventura 140
– Nova 200 AW
– Rezo 180 AW
– Stealth Reporter D650 AW
– Toploader Pro 70 AW
– Pro Runner x450 AW
+ many flash pouches & lens pouches which is too many to name.

Will be back!

ONE Thing We Agree On

– ONE and iStockphoto Launch Zooppa Contest to fight global poverty
Zoopa_V03

Imagine if Batman and The Joker joined forces to eliminate extreme global poverty

Singapore – Whether you’re a dog person or cat lover, a soccer or basketball fan, you’re invited to take part in a unique multimedia contest that brings opposites together to change the world. ONE, a 3 million-strong global advocacy organization that fights extreme poverty and preventable disease, and iStockphoto, the web’s favored source for user-generated imagery and multimedia, are partnering with Zooppa to launch a competition today in order to raise awareness of the plight of the world’s poorest citizens.

Hosted on Zooppa.com, a multimedia platform, the “ONE Thing We Agree On” contest will run through February 26, 2013. It is a challenge for creative minds to develop a video or print piece that showcases rivals uniting to fight issues such as poverty, famine and disease. Entrants are encouraged to think outside the box and submit in-your-face, edgy, fun and/or funny briefs. Videos must be short and the message conveyed in three minutes or less (also, they shouldn’t be sad. No one likes sad.)

Entrants will be judged based on adherence to the spirit of the brief, creativity, production value and whether the submission is compelling and engaging. Judges will include: Tom Freston, ONE Chairman of the Board and former CEO of Viacom and MTV Networks; Andrew Saunders, Getty Images Senior Vice President of Creative Imagery and Product Development; and Jeff Davidoff, ONE Chief Marketing Officer. The winner will be announced during the annual SXSW music, film, and interactive conference in Austin, Texas in March 2013.

Twelve winners in total – six video winners and six print winners – will share $20,000 dollars and 35,000 free credits from iStockphoto. Winners will also be featured at ONE’s live events, on its website and social media platforms.

“The global movement dedicated to the fight against extreme poverty has brought together some strange bedfellows over the years,” says ONE Chief Marketing Officer Jeff Davidoff. “At ONE, our supporters come from the left, right and center and include business professionals, students, faith leaders, mom bloggers and everyone in between. This contest is a unique way to show that, when it comes to saving lives and making the world a better place, this is one thing that we can ALL agree on.”

As part of an exclusive sponsorship, iStockphoto will provide the first 500 entrants with free credits to license high-quality, imagery, footage and audio from iStockphoto for use in their “ONE Thing We Agree On” submissions.

“We’re proud to take part in the ‘ONE Thing We Agree On’ campaign because we are committed to elevating creative minds,” said Rebecca Rockafellar, Senior Vice President of e-commerce at Getty Images and General Manager of iStockphoto, “This competition allows the iStockphoto community to dig deep and create something engaging for an incredible cause.”

2012 in review – This Site!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

19,000 people fit into the new Barclays Center to see Jay-Z perform. This blog was viewed about 130,000 times in 2012. If it were a concert at the Barclays Center, it would take about 7 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.
