Sony Introduces Speedy α37 Camera

– with Full-time Continuous AF Powered by Translucent Mirror Technology.

New Model Features High-Quality 16.1MP APS-C Image Sensor, up to 7 fps Shooting, High- Resolution Electronic Viewfinder and more!

SAN DIEGO, May 16, 2012 – Lightweight, easy to use and packed with a variety of useful features, the new Sony SLT-A37 camera is an ideal choice for consumers eager to explore the world of interchangeable lens DSLR photography.

The new α37 camera is the latest to feature Sony’s acclaimed Translucent Mirror Technology, which delivers a potent combination of fast shooting, non-stop phase detection autofocus and continuous live image preview during still and full HD video (60i/24p) shooting.  This innovative technology also allows the new α37 camera to grab split-second action with a burst of sharply focused images.  Shots can be captured at up to seven frames per second in Tele-Zoom High Speed Shooting Mode, where the central portion of the sensor’s image is magnified by approximately 1.4x.

The camera has a precision 3-cross 15-point AF system with tracking autofocus that keeps faces and fast-moving subjects in sharp focus.  From action-packed sports to spontaneous family portraits, it will ensure that all the drama and beauty of that special moment is captured.

“Delivering lightning-fast shooting speeds and autofocus plus advanced full HD video capture, our innovative Translucent Mirror Technology continues to serve as the backbone of our A-mount line of cameras,” said Mike Kahn, director of the Alpha business at Sony.  “Featuring this unique technology plus a host of exciting new features and an attractive price tag, our new α37 camera brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘entry level DSLR’.”

Framing and focusing is easy with the camera’s high-resolution Tru-Finder™ electronic viewfinder.  With a high 1440k dot resolution, excellent contrast and 100% field of view, it matches or exceeds the abilities of many optical viewfinders.  Adjustments to exposure and other creative picture settings can be previewed in real time, either via the Tru-Finder™ EVF or the tilt-angle 6.7 cm (2.7″) Clear Photo™ LCD screen, making it easy to create shots with a customized, professional finish.

Additionally, the Sony α37 camera helps inexperienced photographers create top-quality portraits with ease.  The new Auto Portrait Framing mode identifies the subject’s position in a composed image and follows the “rule of thirds” to trim the scene and create a beautifully framed portrait.  The cropped photo is then boosted to full resolution using Sony’s unique By Pixel Super Resolution technology, which uses pattern matching to maintain superb image detail, tones and textures in the photo.   Both the original and cropped image files are saved for review.

By Pixel Super Resolution Technology is also used for the “Clear Image Zoom” feature, which digitally doubles the effective magnification of any lens attached to the camera.  Ideal for travel and everyday shooting, it’s a great way to boost maximum focal length without carrying extra hardware.

The 16.1 effective megapixel Exmor® APS HD CMOS sensor inside the α37 camera captures finely detailed, low noise stills and Full HD video. It’s teamed with the latest BIONZ® image processor that extends sensitivity to an ISO 100-16000 range, broadening options for low-light shooting without flash.  Shared with all α A-mount cameras, SteadyShot INSIDE™ stabilization cuts the effects of camera shake by up to 4.0 stops for clearer handheld images with any A-mount lens.

The new α37 camera also features Superior Auto Mode, which intelligently recognizes a wide range of scenes and subjects and adjusts settings automatically.

New A-Mount 18-135mm Telephoto Zoom Lens and Accessories

A versatile match for the α37 and other Sony A-mount camera bodies, the new SAL18135 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 telephoto zoom offers a generous 8x (approx.) zoom range in a compact, go-anywhere lens that’s great for travel, street photography and everyday shooting.  The lens features a SAM design that assures smooth, rapid, whisper-quiet autofocus operation and Direct Manual Focus for accurate fine-tuning of focus.  This sharp telephoto zoom lens will also be offered as a kit lens with the α37 and other Sony A-mount camera bodies.

Compatible accessories include the new PCK-LM11 semi-hard screen protector sheet, exclusively designed for a perfect fit with the LCD screen on the α37 camera, as well as the HVL-F43AM flash, LCS-BP2 backpack and a variety of other exciting products that complete the Alpha ecosystem.

Pricing and Availability
The new α37 digital camera will be available this June with an 18-55mm kit zoom lens (model SEL1855) for about $600.  The new SAL18135 telephoto zoom lens will be available as a stand-alone product this July for about $500, and will be offered as a kit lens with Sony A-mount cameras beginning this August at the below approximate prices:

  • α37 camera kit with 18-135mm lens: USD$800

My.Happy.Photo.Graphy.Olympus.Thailand.2012. – Part 1

Cover Project Photo by Tan Yoke Ling

Visiting Thailand for the 45th time, it had been tough planning where to visit this round. After considering for a while, I have decided to do away with the “over-visited” Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), Chao Phraya (Phraya River), Floating markets & the hoards of “factory visits” meant for the regular tourist. So I had planned something, slightly off the beaten tracks for this visit, as well as to bring my wife, Ling – to some of the places that I had not visited for a long, long time. Making this visit more interesting, I have decided to leave behind my DSLRs and instead, I have with me an Olympus E-P3, an Olympus XZ-1 & an Olympus TG-620 TOUGH. These great cameras were kindly sponsored-loaned from Olympus Singapore. With that, “My.Happy.Photo.Graphy.Olympus.Thailand.2012” begins.

My.Happy.Day One:
On purpose & planning to relax, I have nothing planned for the day except to run some errands. These are some of the things that I always do whenever I visit Thailand. After breakfast, we set off by walking towards the city central. The street scene in Bangkok, Thailand never fails to interests me – the contrasting cityscapes, the colorful city & the people. With the E-P3 on my hand, I was pleasantly surprised that I am able to cover the various scenes easily.

Olympus E-P3, 1/500 seconds, F10, ISO 200

I decided to pick up some purchases at MBK before heading out to Wat Hua LamPhong (Hua Lam Phong Temple). This is the temple that many locals as well tourists visits to donate monetary gifts for the poor & unfortunate. Over here, one can donate a coffin for the deceased who cannot afford a proper burial even after death due to extreme poverty. The temple is filled with people (as usual) when I got there. As the scene is constantly changing here, the E-P3 responded fast whenever I need a confirmation “beep” and I managed to capture all these snapshots – at the right time, at the right moment & with the right exposure of course.

Olympus E-P3, 1/1000 seconds, F10, ISO 200

After loitering at the temple for a while, we moved on to Wat Erawan to pay our respects to the Four-Faced Buddha. Devotees from all over the world come here to pray for anything, everything you can think of. This time, I came to offer my thanks as my wish of marrying Ling, made 4 years ago finally came through (we got married the day before this trip!). The mid morning sun was blazing hot when we got there. Without a CPL or ND filter, I decided to shoot everything at super small aperture  just to “compensate” the overwhelmed brightness.

Olympus E-P3, 1/125 seconds, F7.1, ISO 200

Lunch was next on the plan. We headed back to MBK to another of my regular lunch haunt. Fifth Food Avenue– a Thai-replication of Marche, offering over 100+ choices of food from all over the world set in an up market ambience.

After lunch, we headed back to our hotel to avoid getting fried in the sun, we decided to hit the pool to cool ourselves a little. This seems like the best opportunity to play with the TG-620 and we went to the pool armed with this camera and another underwater cam for some splash & underwater photography.

The TG-620’s “Hi2” mode was amazingly fast. When coupled with (SCN) “Underwater” mode, this camera is a monster in water and under water. We tried shooting the other cam under water, shot a boy having fun in water and I even did a little cam-whoring of myself while under the water at depth between 0.82m to 2.2m.

Dinner was simple affair. We settle it fuss-free by the road – literally! We were eating at a roadside stall and vehicles were passing us as near as 3 inches. Oh wow! After dinner, we decided to go to “Mambo”, a “Trans” show. I will attend the nightly shows every time I am in town as this is one musical show that gets updated from time to time. Every time I came, there’s always new songs & dance added. After the show, we decided to call it a day.

Sony’s New α NEX-F3 Camera

– DSLR-Size Sensor and Advanced Feature Set into Small, Stylish Body !

Li
ghtweight Model Features 16.1 Megapixel APS-C Sensor, 180° Tiltable LCD, Built-in Flash, Auto Portrait

SAN DIEGO, May 16, 2012 – Sony’s α NEX-F3 digital camera delivers professional quality photos with a compact, pocket-sized body, allowing consumers to explore the creative world of high-quality, interchangeable lens photography in a refreshingly fun and entertaining way.

The new NEX-F3 camera features the same space-saving mirrorless design as other models in Sony’s E-mount family as well as an advanced, 16.1 effective megapixel Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor, identical in size to sensors found in traditional DSLR cameras.   The large sensor takes in more light during image capture, resulting in flawless, low-noise photographs and crisply detailed Full HD videos (60i/24p).  Photographers can also easily create images with beautiful defocus effects, where the subject is focused sharply against a smoothly blurred background.

“Sony continues to redefine digital photography with our E-mount series, packing a large APS-C size sensor into a small, lightweight camera body to produce professional-quality images with ease,” said Mike Kahn, director of the Alpha business at Sony.  “Featuring a diverse set of imaging technologies and offered at a great price, the new NEX-F3 model reinforces our commitment to this rapidly growing compact system camera market.”

The NEX-F3 camera adds a whole new perspective to self-portraits with a 180° Tiltable LCD screen, a first for Sony’s E-mount camera line.  By simply holding the camera at arm’s length and flipping the LCD screen vertically, users can adjust the on-screen preview image and properly frame photos.

Additionally, the new model features a useful built-in flash to broaden shooting options indoors or in low light situations.  Already introduced on Sony’s acclaimed NEX-7 camera, this pop-up flash handily brightens portraits and other shots without the need to carry an additional flash accessory.

The new NEX-F3 camera also includes the new Auto Portrait Framing feature for creating top-quality portraits quickly and easily.   This innovative feature identifies a subject’s position in a composed image, and follows the “rule of thirds” to trim the scene appropriately around the subject’s face, creating a beautifully composed portrait.  The cropped portrait is then boosted to full resolution using Sony’s unique By Pixel Super Resolution technology,

which uses pattern matching to maintain superb image detail, tones and textures in the photo.

Other convenient essentials added to the new NEX-F3 camera include the Superior Auto mode,  which intelligently recognizes a wide range of scenes and subjects and adjusts settings automatically. Battery stamina has been boosted to an industry-leading 470 shots (approx.) on a single charge – an approximate 18% improvement over its predecessor, the NEX-C3 model.

The camera is compatible with the FDA-EV1S viewfinder accessory (sold separately), which offers a high-contrast, high-resolution OLED viewfinder display and a wide viewing angle.  The NEX-F3 model also features a high-quality, premium-feel grip for more comfortable handling and can be charged via either USB or a standard AC outlet.

New Lightweight 18-200mm Telephoto Zoom Lens for Sony α NEX

An ideal travel partner for the NEX-F3 camera, the new SEL18200LE E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS LE telezoom lens offers a powerful 11x zoom range and superb resolution in an easy-to-carry package.  Smaller and 12% lighter than the SEL18200 lens, the new E-mount model features Optical SteadyShot to compensate for the effects of hand-shake.  It also features Direct Manual Focus to give users precise control over focus settings, resulting in crisp, beautiful images.

Pricing and Availability
The new NEX-F3 compact digital camera will be available this June in silver, black and white with an 18-55mm kit zoom lens (model SEL1855) for about USD$600.  The new SEL18200LE telezoom lens will be available this July in black for about USD$850.

Canon brings touch to the DSLR with the EOS 650D

Touch panel, Continuous AF Servo and the DIGIC 5 image processor come together to redefine user experience and bring amateur photography to a new level!

Singapore, 8 June 2012 – Canon Singapore today introduced the next step in the evolution of DSLRs with the launch of the EOS 650D, the first DSLR in the world featuring a touch screen interface*. Driven by an 18-megapixel CMOS sensor and the powerful DIGIC 5 imaging processor, the new Vari-angle Touch Screen Interface brings an intuitive user experience to the table with the use of familiar touch gestures like pinching, zooming and swiping.

“Canon has always focused on enriching user experiences. Touch screen technology has changed the way we use our devices and made them more accessible, which is why we have introduced it to the EOS 650D,” said Andrew Koh, Senior Director and General Manager of the Consumer Imaging and Information Products Group, Canon Singapore. “Along with the new Hybrid CMOS AF system and the DIGIC 5 image processor, we are confident that the EOS 650D will be a compelling choice for amateurs looking to bring their photography to the next level.”

Intuitive touch panel: a world-first for DSLRs
The introduction of touch promises to bring a whole new user experience to DSLR photography. The 3-inch 3:2 ratio Vari-angle Clear View LCD II capacitive touch screen allows familiar touch gestures such as pinching, zooming and swiping. Commonly used EOS controls have also been integrated into the touch panel experience, allowing users to conveniently change settings like shutter speed or aperture value easily via the touch screen. The touch screen also features anti-smudge coating and reduced reflective glare when taking pictures under bright conditions.

Composing images with peace of mind
The EOS 650D empowers both amateur and professional photographers with a host of improved functions and new creative imaging features. A wider ISO range from 100 to 12800 (expandable to 25600) gives users more freedom to capture sharp images in a wide variety of lighting conditions.

The Multi Shot Noise Reduction function allows users to take four consecutive shots which the camera will automatically merge and align to compensate for noise while improving detail and definition. Night photography is also more convenient with the new Handheld Night Scene mode, which lets photographers capture dark scenes without the need for a tripod. This is achieved by capturing four shots consecutively at a fast shutter speed, then automatically merging them internally to form a single sharp image. The EOS 650D also offers HDR Backlight Control, where it shoots 3 images at different exposures to combine into a single, perfectly expose image, preserving details from both bright and dark areas.

EOS Scene Detection technology has also undergone significant improvements. Users can directly apply one of seven effects (Grainy/Black & White, Soft Focus, Toy Camera, Miniature, Art Bold, Water Painting, & Fish-eye) to their pictures without additional post-processing on the computer. A new Night Scene assesses point light sources or ambient light to automatically adjust exposure settings (shutter speed, aperture, ISO), based on whether a tripod is currently used or not, ensuring that the user always captures the best possible night scene. The improved Scene Detection system also comes with new icons displayed on the Live View screen to help users easily identify and toggle between modes.

Improved focus for stills and videos with new Hybrid CMOS AF System
With the new Hybrid CMOS AF system, the EOS 650D is able to engage both contrast AF and phase-difference AF in both Live View and video recording modes to perform full-time continuous autofocusing. With a 31-zone, multi-point AF and a new Subject Tracking AF system, four different methods of AF are possible during Live View.

The Face + Tracking method detects a face, focuses on it and tracks it by switching AF points. Users can also set the target focus area by touching it on the LCD monitor, and it will automatically be tracked by the camera. The FlexiZone Multi AF mode divides the scene into 31 AF zones prioritising the centre and subject in the foreground; while the FlexiZone Single AF and Quick modes allow users to move a focal point with a touch of the LCD screen. The Quick mode functions like the conventional Quick mode by temporarily shutting off Live View to perform focusing via the optical viewfinder, but allows users to select the AF point via touch.

Other new features in the Hybrid CMOS AF System include Continuous (Pre) AF, where the EOS 650D continuously focuses on an object before the shutter button is pressed, and Touch Shutter Release, where the image is captured immediately after the user touches the screen to focus on the subject. Movie Servo AF mode also brings continuous autofocusing during video to the EOS 650D with all EF and EF-S lenses.

Creating videos with convenience
With the EOS 650D, the easy-to-use Video Snapshot editor, a feature previously found only in Canon LEGRIA camcorders, allows users to capture quick video snapshots in 2, 4 or 8-second durations. The in-camera editor can then be used to reorder or delete the clips without the need of a PC.

A new generation of quality EF lenses

Along with the EOS 650D, Canon also launched 2 new lenses, the EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and the EF40mm f/2.8 STM.

The EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM features reduced chromatic aberration with the inclusion of one UD lens element and one PMo aspherical lens element. When used with the EOS 650D’s Movie Servo AF, it also offers smooth, speedy and quiet focusing while recording. This is achieved with the development of a new six-group zoom system, and the adoption of a stepping motor and focus mechanism. Along with it, the Dynamic IS system features an expanded correction range, with image stabilization equivalent to 4 stops of light, which proves very useful when shooting subjects on the move.

The EF40mm f/2.8 STM comes in an ultra-compact and lightweight design, with a diameter of 68.2mm, a thickness of 22.8mm and weighing 130g making it the slimmest and lightest EF lens produced. A fast f/2.8 aperture, 7-blade circular aperture and aspherical lens elements let the lens achieve a high level of image quality from centre to corner.

Editor’s Note:
The KISS (Keep It Silent & Simple) or Rebel Series or the 3 digit series of the EOS Range of DSLRs is into its 8th incarnations right now with the EOS650D. Targeted at upgraders and consumers’ market, cameras in this range are exceptionally popular due to its humble asking price, the light weight but solid build and it’s ability to acheive high quality photos makes every EOS in this product line a joy to use. I shall not comment further until I get my hands on a review unit – stay tuned.
-Editor.

Olympus Imaging Corporation is pleased to announce the upcoming release of the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75mm f1.8 High-Grade Portrait Lens, an interchangeable lens that conforms to the Micro Four Thirds System standard. The launch of the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75mm f1.8 is scheduled for July 2012.

Picture : M.Zuiko ED 75mm F1.8 with the new LH-61F  lens hood.

Main Features
1. Top class image quality among all M.ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses with sharp, clear imaging performance with aperture fully open at f1.8

2.  High-quality design with metallic finish and compact body with an overall length of 6.9 cm

3.  Fast, quiet autofocusing using the MSC mechanism

The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75mm f1.8 is a single focal length telephoto lens equivalent to a 150mm lens for 35mm cameras, optimised for studio, stage and indoor sports photography as well as portrait shooting. It delivers sharp, clear imaging performance with a fully open large aperture of f1.8 and features an advanced optical design that incorporates 9 groups of 10 lens elements that make extensive use of special glass materials including three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements to optimally correct aberrations. The result is a superb lens that offers the top class image quality among the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses.

With a total length of just 6.9 cm, this lens is surprisingly compact. A textured metallic outer finish exudes quality and sophistication, while the large-diameter glass front lens conveys a sense of power and performance.

The autofocusing mechanism employs Olympus’ proven MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism, which uses an inner focus system to drive a single focusing lens, enabling fast and quiet focusing. A precision-touch metallic focus ring is also provided for easy manual focusing.

Main Feature Details

  1. 1.   Top class image quality among all M.ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses with sharp, clear imaging performance with aperture fully open at f1.8

1-1.  High-grade portrait lens with focal length of approximately 150mm (35mm equivalent) and large f1.8 aperture
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75mm f1.8 is a single focal length telephoto lens with a bright f1.8 aperture that delivers sharp, clear imaging performance ideal for studio, stage and indoor sports photography, as well as portrait shooting.

To correct the axial chromatic aberration that may be produced by telescopic lenses, this lens incorporates three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements in the front section. To correct the spherical aberration that tends to be produced with large-aperture lenses, two HR (High Refractivity) elements are incorporated in the rear section.

Each lens element is polished to an ultra-high level of working precision only possible with the advanced techniques developed by Olympus’ master craftsmen and carefully assembled to ensure maximum accuracy and reliability. Superbly crafted and brilliantly designed, this lens boasts the top class image quality of any of our M.ZUIKO DIGITAL series lenses.

1-2.  True circular defocusing with minimal vignetting
In order to achieve a nice, clean circular defocusing effect, vignetting has to be kept to a minimum and circular aperture diaphragm has to be used. When vignetting occurs, the defocusing on the periphery of the image is not a proper circle; instead, it is elliptical (like a rugby ball) or cornered due to the fact that light coming through the peripheral portion of the lens near the aperture is restricted because it is incident obliquely to the optical axis.

This lens minimises vignetting by passing all the light that enters the lens – even that on the periphery – directly through to the image sensor. Featuring 9 groups of 10 lens elements that make extensive use of special glass materials, the lens is able to accurately pass through all incoming light. In addition, the optical design of this lens also helps prevent double-line defocusing or edge colouration due to chromatic aberration.

1-3.  ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating
To ensure clear imaging performance even under unfavourable conditions such as when shooting against the light, the lens surfaces are coated with Olympus’s special ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating, which features high transmittance and the ability to completely eliminate previously hard-to-prevent artifacts such as ghosts and flares. The ZERO coating is an application of the thin film control technology Olympus developed, thanks to its experience in multi-layer film deposition technology. Advantages include scratch resistance and durability thanks to the high film strength made possible by vacuum deposition, as well as clear imaging performance with high transmittance.

2.  High-quality design with metallic finish and compact body with an overall length of 6.9 cm
With its bright f1.8 aperture and bigger-than-life imaging performance, you would expect this lens to be much bigger than it is. Thanks to the extraordinary precision of our finishing process, we have been able to pack our best ever performer into a compact body with an overall length of just 6.9 cm. To add the touch of class you would expect from a high-end product, we have finished this lens in a subtly textured metallic finish that reflects the high-quality design highly acclaimed with the PEN series and the OM-D. Together, the high-quality texture of the metallic finish and the large precision-polished glass lens element at the front with a diameter of roughly 50 mm convey a unique sense of power and sophistication that is sure to boost the user’s pride of ownership.

A dedicated metallic lens hood and lens cap, which match the high-quality design of this lens, are also available as optional accessories. Proper coordination of these accessories will be sure to enhance the attractiveness of this lens.

3.   Fast, quiet autofocusing using the MSC mechanism
The fruit of advanced optical design technology, the MSC (Movie and Still Compatible) mechanism incorporated in this lens was developed to enable fast, quiet autofocusing with a reduced number of lightweight lens elements. By driving the focusing lens directly using a metallic shaft and feed screw finished with precision in the sub-micrometric order, rather than using a gear, which is the cause of operating noise, the MSC ensures ultra-quiet focusing and shooting.

The inner focusing system that incorporates the MSC mechanism adjusts focusing by displacing only one small, lightweight lens element. This enables smooth autofocusing with high speed and low noise. The smooth autofocusing facilitates comfortable, stress-free movie shooting, as well as still image photography.

Optional Accessories
The LH-61F Lens Hood and the LC-61 Lens Cap are metal-made lens accessories prepared exclusively for the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75mm f1.8. Combining them with the lens will further enhance the high-quality texture of the lens. The LH-61F is packaged together with the LC-58C Lens Cap with the inner knob system, which makes it possible to attach or remove the lens cap even when the lens hood is left attached to the lens.

Olympus Announced the Olympus TOUGH TG-1 Camera

World’s fastest f2.0 TOUGH camera · TOUGH picture quality blows competition out of the water · New TG-1 lens and display quality put rivals to shame · f2.0 high-speed lens and converters deliver at 12 metres depth.

Singapore, 8 May 2012 – Even by the extremely high standards of Olympus’ category-defining TOUGH range of cameras, the new OLYMPUS TOUGH TG-1 flagship takes remarkable pictures and boasts some remarkable features.

First and foremost is its superb, extra-wide aperture f2.0 high-speed lens that can capture excellent-quality images even in the permanent twilight found 12 metres underwater, which is exactly where this camera is engineered to excel. The TG-1 is waterproof*, shockproof*, freezeproof* and crushproof*. For all-action risk-takers or reef-loving divers, it is peace of mind sealed in a stylish all-metal box. And what a box of high-tech innovations that is. For serious photographers, waterproof fisheye and tele converter lenses are available (via an optional adapter). There are Olympus’ iHS (Intelligence, High Sensitivity and High Speed) technologies, plus a colour-rich, high-contrast, anti-reflective OLED display, GPS and e.compass and three new shooting modes: Low Light, Super Sports and Super Macro. It is an impressive package that puts rival compacts firmly in their place. The OLYMPUS TOUGH TG-1 is available in Silver from mid-June 2012 onwards.

Let there be light

No matter how tough your camera, in the end it is excellent picture quality that counts. And picture quality is what the new TOUGH flagship is all about. Its f2.0 super-bright, high-speed lens gives the name TOUGH a new meaning – it is really tough to get anything less than an outstanding shot. The lens is an eye-opening example of cutting-edge optical engineering. Combined with the powerful TruePic VI image processor and 12-Megapixel low-noise, high-sensitivity CMOS sensor, this lens makes it possible to shoot pictures that until now simply was not feasible with an outdoor-proof camera at this price. In low light conditions and with fast-moving, auto-focused images, the new lens transforms the range of shots you can take. The TG-1 also features the same FAST AF system technology found in Olympus’ PEN cameras, so in fast-action situations you have an excellent chance of getting your Full HD movie or pristine still.

Unlike most cameras in the compact class, you can attach waterproof converters to the TG-1 using an adapter. A fisheye converter captures wider, more dynamic images even in dark underwater scenes; while the tele converter lets you increase the optical zoom ratio by 6.8x – for dramatic close-ups with professional-looking background blur. With the Super-resolution Zoom feature, you can even reach 13.6x magnification.

Let the games begin

The new TOUGH is for people who do not want to hold back. It is a worry-free camera that makes life a whole lot more fun. From the top of an Alpine mountain to the bottom of a tropical lagoon, you can take it everywhere and capture everything. It is crushproof* to a force of 100kg, waterproof* to a depth of 12 metres, shockproof* to a height of 2 metres and freezeproof* to -10°C. What’s more, the TG-1 is equipped with new features that make recording movies and stills even easier in tricky conditions. Like the Low Light Mode that automatically speeds up the shutter to prevent blur when you want to capture the special atmosphere of a low-light scene. Or the Super Macro Mode that lets you zoom in for spectacular close-ups of objects just one centimetre from the lens.

Canon EF-S Lenses – Are They Any Good? (Featuring Kelly Yuen)

You bought an entry-level or prosumer Canon EOS DSLR. It came with a kit lens in the box. Every other photographer whom you know tells you to forget about that lens and get a “better” lens. Is that lens really that bad? Read on.

In Canon’s EOS World of DSLR cameras & lenses, everyone is familiar with EF lenses which stands for “Electro-Focus”. In 2003, Canon introduced the EF-S line of lenses for exclusive use with APS-C Sensors (Smaller Sensor found in Canon’s entry-level & prosumer DSLRs) The “S” in EF-S stands for “short back focus” (not “Standard” which many had thought so), which means that the rear element of the lens is closer to the image sensor than on regular full frame (35mm DSLR). As of 2012, no EF-S lens was given the ‘L” designation or with built with Diffractive optics and strangely only one EF-S prime lens was built for this line of lenses.
(*Only Canon cameras with the APS-C sized sensor released after 2003 support the EF-S mount.)

So back to the question, are these lenses any good? Well, the professionals and serious hobbyists swear by their L Lenses, but that does not means the non “L” lenses will not get you good photographs. Although 80% of EF-S lenses feels “plasticky” and not really made for harsh conditions, the lens build is consumer friendly and durable. It is also priced very much lower than it’s bigger EF & EF(L) brothers, EF-S is good too – if you know what you are doing. If you do not intend to invest upwards to a professional body or a full frame body in the future, EF-S lenses saves you tons of money to start with. They are cheap to replace too – this is a bonus.

Thanks to Canon Singapore, I was given the opportunity to take a few of the EF-S lenses out for a weekend. (*Except EF-S 17-55m F2.8 IS USM, EF-S  15-85mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM, EF-S 10-22mm F3.5-4.5 USM & EF-S 60mm F2.8 Macro USM) Strangely, all the slightly more expensive EF-S “front-liners” were all out on road show display leaving behind this few lenses that are usually shunned by Professionals and “Professionals”. Well, I just took the lot and left Canon Singapore with NO Plans and NO ideas on how to do this article. I feel strange at first to leave behind my Canon arsenal (Canon EOS 1Ds MarkIII, 1D MarkIV & 5D MarkII with the 14 EF & EF-L-lenses) at home for a weekend, but certainly, I feel relaxed with the lighter gear in my bag and a chance to do a leisure walkabout to take a break from assignments.

So which lenses did Canon Singapore passed me?

From Left to Right: EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS, (Left Top) EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II, EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS, EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM & EF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS.

I took to the streets. Since it’s a weekend, I met up with one of my photography student, Kelly Yuen. I decided that for this time, I will let Kelly do the shooting with the lot of EF-S lenses and I shall just take my weekend walk with him and let him do whatever he wants with the lenses.

Kelly Yuen (http://www.facebook.com/yuenmxk)

We started walking towards Bugis Village, a haven of some sort for street photography with a complete messed up scene filled with people from all walks of life. Kelly fitted the EF-S18-200mm to his Canon EOS 400D and he started shooting.

Using the wide zoom range to his advantage, he shot expressions of people like the street paddlers below.

EF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS, 1/40 F5.6 ISO 400.

EF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS, 1/125 F5.6 ISO 800.

And he took shots of people & objects in the vicinity too.

EF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS, 1/100 F5.6 ISO 400.

EF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS, 1/60 F5.6 ISO 400.

As the sky threatens to pour, we left Bugis & headed towards Bras Basah. Kelly switched the EF-S 18-200 IS with the EF-S 18-135mm IS at this point. We went to the higher floors in search of films when Kelly decided to shoot from top down.

EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS, 1/250 F7.1 ISO 800.
(I did a little processing to make this photo more interesting. lol )

After the above shot, Kelly decided to change the EF-S 18-135mm IS to the new EF-S 18-55mm IS II and shot the church across the road.

EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II, 1/200 F7.1 ISO 400.

I half suspect Kelly could be getting tired and decided to switch to this EF-S18-55mm IS II to lighten the camera. After getting what we were looking for, we decided to walk towards town. The Vanguard building caught Kelly’s attention and he took a shot of the building at the junction.

EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II, 1/160 F7.1 ISO 800.

After this, the rain came and we headed home.
The next day, a Sunday, I picked up Kelly and decides to visit his school in the west of Singapore. His school offers a wide range of floral & fauna and I suggested to Kelly that perhaps, we can try doing some macro since some of the EF-S lenses have great magnification capability. When we reached, Kelly fitted the EF-S18-55mm IS II and took the below shots.

EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II, 1/160 F7.1 ISO 800.

EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II, 1/125 F7.1 ISO 400.

Very impressive close up shots I would say. Since it’s still very early, Kelly suggested visiting Chinese Garden as we are just a stone throw away. In just minutes, we are at the garden entrance. A rising sun greeted us.

EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II, 1/800 F7.1 ISO 100.

I saw Kelly changing the lens to the EF-S18-135mm IS as we walked into the garden.
We came to a bridge that caught our attention. Seeing the peaceful lake with a nicely balance reflection of the bridge, Kelly shot the scene.

EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS, 1/160 F11 ISO 200.

A group of elderly was practising a fan dance, we got curious and got closer. Eventually, Kelly was right in front of the group and took this shot below.

EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS, 1/500 F5.6 ISO 800.

Great timing, great capture. Kelly’s decisiveness in photography always gets him natural shots of people and their activities. We left the group and ventured nearer to the water banks. Here, Kelly took this shot.

EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS, 1/500 F7.1 ISO 200.

Nice shot.  He then switched the lens to the EF-S18-200mm IS and he took a few more shots below.

EF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS, 1/160 F7.1 ISO 200.

EF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS, 1/200 F5.6 ISO 400.

We were too engrossed in shooting and did not realised the sky had (again!!) turn dark & gloomy again. As we made our way to the exit, Kelly shot the clouds.

EF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS, 1/1600 F5.6 ISO 800.

We managed to get to the car in time and headed towards Kelly’s home which also happened to be at the west and within minutes’ drive from Chinese Garden.
At home, safe from the storm outside, Kelly decides to shoot the little indulgence we were having with the EF-S17-85mm IS USM.

EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM, 1/80 F5.6 ISO640.

Yummy shot isn’t it? After that, we spent our time together and went through all the photos that Kelly took and cleaned all the lenses together. Time really flies, before we knew it, it’s Sunday evening and the storm had stopped. Kelly decided that we should capture the sun set and round the EF-S Lens shoot with a nice “parting shot”. We went to a park nearby his house and Kelly took the EF-S18-200mm IS and shot this.

EF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS, 1/200 F5.6 ISO 400.

After that we parted for the weekend.
That night, while sorting out the photos for this article, I realised Kelly did not touched the EF-S 55-250mm at all. So I took it out 2 days later at a photography event and used the EF-S55-250mm IS to shoot the below shots with a Canon EOS 40D.

EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS, 180 seconds F22 ISO 100.

EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS, 1/50 F6.3 ISO 400.

With the above 2 shots, I have completed my “round” with the EF-S lenses. It’s a pity that I did not have the chance (due to availability) to test out the “higher end” EF-S lenses like the popular EF-S 17-55m F2.8 IS USM, the travel-to-portrait-master EF-S 15-85mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM, the landscape-must-have EF-S 10-22mm F3.5-4.5 USM & famous EF-S 60mm F2.8 Macro USM. But having said that, well, we had fun with what we were given and Kelly produced good photos with the EF-S lenses. I had fun too using these lenses doing long exposure & tried shooting the moon. Looking at this batch of photos, I am convinced that it’s not about what camera or lenses we have or use, it’s the person behind these equipments that makes the difference. So if you are using EF-S Lenses and complaining about the bad photos, look into the mirror, that’s the person to blame.
:)~

VC (Vibration Compensation)

VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron’s proprietary image stabilization system. Tamron’s VC is a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three ceramic balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the ceramic balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance. And as the VC lens may be moved in parallel using only the motorized control, the mechanical structure has been simplified, enabling the creation of a more compact lens.

New VC system (moving coil method)

Tamron’s original VC image stabilization mechanism utilized a moving magnet system whereby a heavy magnet was positioned near the moving VC lens element. In the new VC unit the positions of the magnet and the coil are reversed, because of this the VC optical lens element is attached to the coil. The new VC mechanism employs a moving coil mechanism with a lightweight coil, and the lighter coil reduces the load on the drive system. Thus, the lighter, more compact new VC unit contributes to the lens’s overall light weight and compact size.

Because the 24-70 mm F/2.8 Di VC USD is a high-speed zoom lens with maximum aperture of F/2.8, its VC system must drive a lens that is larger and heavier than other zooms. Therefore, the shape, size and layout of the drive coils are all designed to obtain sufficient thrust. The result is a full-size, high-speed zoom that provides the same high level of compensation effect.

About the ultrasonic motor

In the ultrasonic motor, a piezoelectric element arranged in a ring formation generates ultrasonic vibrations in a metallic ring stator, and the vibration energy is used to rotate a metallic ring rotor that is attached to the stator. The rotation energy is in turn transferred from the metallic ring rotor to operate the focus lens.

Notice of Classification Code Change for Nikon Mounts

Since the introduction by Tamron of the first Nikon mount lens featuring an internal AF motor, the AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC (Model A20), all Nikon mount lenses with the internal AF motor had used the classification code “NII.” Lenses using a coupler system* without an internal AF motor were designated as “N.” Because future Nikon lenses will have the internal AF motor as a standard feature, Tamron has decided to simplify the designation and consolidate all Nikon mount lenses as “N,” eliminating the “NII” designation for future models. This classification code change will be effective beginning with the 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD (Model B008).

The “N” classification lenses with coupler systems are: SP AF200-500mm F/5.6-6.3 Di (Model A08); and SP AF180mm F/3.5 Di (Model B01).

*Coupler system refers to a system that uses a shaft to harness the AF motor built into the camera body to operate the lens.

New Canon EOS 60Da DSLR Camera For Astronomy Enthusiasts

Captures The True Colors Of The Cosmos

April 3, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today introduced the EOS 60Da Digital SLR Camera, a long-awaited successor to the EOS 20Da that is optimized for astrophotography. This DSLR caters to astronomers and hobbyists who enjoy capturing the beauty of the night sky by offering a modified infrared filter and a low-noise sensor with heightened hydrogen-alpha sensitivity. These modifications allow the camera to capture magnificent photographs of “red hydrogen emission” nebulae and other cosmic phenomena.

“The EOS 60Da is a testament to the constant desire to meet the needs of every customer, including those in specialized fields,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A., “This new camera enables an accurate depiction of a part of our solar system which is hard to achieve with conventional cameras but should be enjoyed and celebrated.”

The Canon EOS 60Da camera packs a powerful 18-megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-C) that produces sharp and high-contrast images of astronomical objects, a major enhancement over the EOS 20Da model’s 8.2-megapixel sensor. The improved infrared-blocking filter is a modification suited specifically toward astronomy enthusiasts to achieve a hydrogen-alpha light sensitivity that is approximately three times higher than that of a normal Canon DSLR camera. This produces a 20-percent higher transmittance of Hydrogen Alpha line, or H α wavelength, allowing astronomers to capture crisp, clear images of reddish, diffuse nebulae.

Enhanced Features

Crisp images of the stars and planets can be viewed on the EOS 60Da’s improved 3.0-inch Clear View LCD screen with 1,040,000 dots for detailed focusing. The flip-out Vari-angle screen allows photographers to adjust the screen for easy viewing without straining even while the camera is mounted to a telescope via a third-party T-ring adapter. Optimized for stargazing with friends or in an educational setting, astronomy enthusiasts can connect the camera to a TV with the provided AVC-DC400ST Stereo AV Video Cable and display the night sky on a TV monitor using the camera’s Live View mode. Moreover, the EOS 60Da’s Live View mode is equipped with a Silent Shooting feature that eliminates shutter-induced vibration for maximum camera stability when the camera is mounted to a telescope or super-telephoto EF lens.

Enhanced noise reduction on the EOS 60Da sensor offers photographers the ability to experiment with the wide array of ISO settings and increased ISO speeds up to 6400 expandable to 12800. Other features include an intelligent nine-point autofocus system, full manual controls, and RAW, JPEG, and RAW+JPEG image recording capabilities.

Accessories

The EOS 60Da helps capture the wonders of the night sky with its use of Canon’s award-winning EF and EF-S lenses along with other EOS accessories. Additionally, the EOS 60Da is packaged with Canon’s RA-E3 Remote Controller Adapter, providing the ability to connect a Canon Timer Remote Control such as the TC-80N3 (optional accessory). The TC-80N3 is ideal for controlling time exposures longer than 30 seconds as well as capturing a series of consecutive time exposures that can be composited during post-processing for improved image quality. This is especially useful when the camera body is connected to a telescopei or an EF super telephoto lens.

Canon has also included an AC adapter kit with the EOS 60Da, allowing the camera to be powered through an AC wall outlet or a battery-powered inverter, ideal for long exposure image or video capture at home or in the field.

At the same time, Sigma launched its Sigma APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM
Currently, Sigma only made this available for its Sigma Mount. Once other Mounts are available, this lens will outsell the 150mm Macro that’s been under-selling while Tamron did well with the 180mm competing directly with Canon’s 180mm F3.5L.  This is good news to Canon users as well as other brand users who are looking for a well built, price competing and fast macro lens of this telephoto range. Let’s seee how soon will Sigma start to release this variant in other Mounts.

APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM
Designed for use with full frame digital SLR cameras. May also be used with smaller APS-c size sensors with a corresponding effective increase in focal length to about 260mm with most cameras
– Focuses down to 1:1 magnification ratio at its closest working distance of 18.5 inches
– Optical Stabilizer allows for hand held photography
– A lens hood, front & rear lens caps are included with the lens.

This is the world’s first 180mm macro lens incorporating a magnification ratio of 1:1 and a large maximum aperture of F2.8. It benefits from Sigma’s original Optical Stabilizer function and the wide F2.8 aperture allows faster shutter speeds for narrow depth of field, enabling photographers to emphasize the subject. Three FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for color aberrations. This lens incorporates Sigma’s floating inner focusing system. This minimizes aberrations which occur as shooting distances change, and enables stable rendering of the image from infinity to 1:1 magnification.

The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even at the maximum aperture. Equipped with Sigma’s own propriety OS (Optical Stabilizer) system, this lens offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible*, enabling handheld close-up photography. The incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed autofocus as well as full-time manual focus capability. This lens has a rounded 9 blade diaphragm creating an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image. At 1:1 magnification, this lens has a focusing distance of 47cm/18.5in, which is a greater working distance than shorter focal length macro lenses. This is advantageous when taking pictures of highly sensitive subjects such as butterflies and insects.

Attaching Sigma’s optional Tele Converter’s allows photographers’ to shoot with an even greater working distance or with a magnification ratio larger than 1:1.
