Nikon launches the D5500!
– Nikon D5500: Photographic excellence made smarter and easier
– Infinite creativity is at the fingertips with Nikon’s new 24.2-megapixel DSLR featuring a vari-angle touch screen monitor and instant sharing capability with wireless connectivity.

D5500_ambience_2

06th January 2015, Singapore – Taking photography to new creative heights is made easier as Nikon Singapore Pte. Ltd. introduces the Nikon D5500, a 24.2-megapixel DX-format camera designed for aspiring photographers seeking to challenge convention by creating images in new and exciting ways. As the world’s smallest, lightest*1 and slimmest DSLR, the D5500 with wireless connectivity delivers intuitive operations to complement the inspiration of a great shot, be it still images or videos. With the combination of a vari-angle LCD monitor with touch-screen control, intelligent eye-sensor, and optimized image review, the DSLR fits comfortably as a trusty companion for capturing those ‘eureka’ moments of photography.

D5500_BK_18_55_-_top

Photographers will be excited with the results achieved by the D5500’s image sensor that is designed without an optical low-pass filter (OLPF), and Nikon’s EXPEED 4 image-processing engine that provides a compelling advantage to capturing remarkably sharp and vivid details. Delivering photographic freedom, the DX-format camera supports a wide range of ISO and includes an enhanced Picture Control system, 39-point autofocus (AF), and support for Full HD video recording in 60p format. In addition, as a first in Nikon DSLR cameras, the eye-sensor automatically turns off the monitor screen display when
using the viewfinder and a ‘Touch Fn’ allows for easy adjustments of operational settings.

“The D5500 sets a new standard of camera operability and intuitive features with the eye-sensor technology and touch screen vari-angle monitor,” said Garland Mak, Deputy General Manager of International Marketing Division Imaging Group, Nikon Singapore Pte. Ltd. “This DX-format camera is perfectly designed to empower photographers to capture stunning and crystal-clear images with ease. What’s more, the built-in wireless connectivity makes it simple to shoot and share, and the compact and sturdy build is designed for convenient portability.”

D5500 Primary Features

1. New intuitive features
• Optimised usability: Designed with ease of operation in mind, the D5500 is the first Nikon DSLR camera to include a vari-angle touch screen LCD monitor, allowing photographers to shoot from a wide variety of angles. Touch operation permission mode, a first in the Nikon DSLR range, incorporates a setting that disables touch operation during shooting, enabling the touch-screen controls only during playback. This prevents any erroneous or unintentional commands, giving users peace of mind that they can capture their special moments without having to fiddle around with sudden settings changes. With the ‘Touch Fn’, functions assigned to the second Fn button can also be easily executed via touch operation with the right thumb whilst holding the grip, allowing settings such as ISO, AF-area and focus point selection to be enabled or disabled while confirming viewfinder information.

Nikon’s exclusive Scene Recognition System then analyzes and measures the available light exposure, flash exposure, autofocus and white balance before releasing the shutter to perfectly capture the memorable moments.

• Maximising creative expression: In a first for DX-format cameras, the D5500 includes Vignette Control, created to reduce peripheral light falloff to ensure well-balanced brightness across the entire frame. The Special Effects modes also expand creative expression with 10 variable options including, but not limited to, Super Vivid, Pop and Toy Camera, to provide a playful tint of distinctiveness. Adding on to the visual indulgence are 16 options for Scene Mode, with effects including Portrait and Child settings for the family-focused photographer, Night Landscape and

Beach/snow for landscape enthusiasts, and Sunset, Dusk/dawn and Candlelight for magic hour photography. To ensure every artistic expression is spot-on without the hassle of post-photography tweaking, immediate image adjustment is made possible while viewing live-view images with the option to adjust and confirm white balance and Picture Control.

• Stunning clarity with Full HD Video: Enjoy shooting Full HD 1080/60p videos under various lighting conditions, whether filming a sunset street performance or a mass gathering at the parade, with the ability to use up to ISO 25600*3 during movie recordings. Videos with the Nikon D5500 are complemented by crystal clear audio by its built-in stereo microphone, rounding off the impeccable production quality of a high performance DX-format DSLR.

3. Robust yet stylish
• Beautifully crafted and built to last: Encased in a monocoque structure and strengthened with carbon fiber composite material*4 for the front body, front cover and rear cover, the Nikon D5500 is built to last yet it does not have the weight often associated with similar high-strength materials. Photographers can travel light and shoot easy as its slim style and ergonomic layout also consequently provide to a sufficient grip space for comfortable holding.

• Ergonomic & stylish: Available in classic black and also chic red colour kits, strength and quality build are complemented by sleek exterior design.

A secure and deep set grip for steady operation also allows the little finger to be rested whilst in use, resulting in an attractive and fashionable design package with beautiful photographic results.

The New Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm F/4E PF ED VR

==================================
Joby-Flash-Clamp
===================================

The New Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm F/4E PF ED VR
– Exceptional Telephoto Performance Takes on a Highly Portable Form
– As the world’s lightest*1 300mm lens and the first NIKKOR to employ a Phase Fresnel lens, the new AF-S NIKKOR 300mm F/4E PF ED VR delivers superior picture quality in
a compact and light package

AFS_300_4E_PF

06th January 2015, Singapore – Nikon Singapore Pte Ltd announced the launch of the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm F/4E PF ED VR, the latest addition to its renowned NIKKOR line-up of FX-format compatible lenses.

Crafted for those looking to achieve maximum image quality from a lightweight lens, the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm F/4E PF ED VR incorporates Nikon’s Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element*2 for the first time in NIKKOR lenses, resulting in a remarkably light 755 grams. Photographers will also enjoy the immense flexibility needed to get the perfectly timed shot as the highly portable lens also features a Vibration Reduction (VR) system of 4.5 stops*3, thus enabling the omission of a tripod.

300mm_F4E_PF_01_RB_1182_A3

“The innovative Phase Fresnel lens element, exclusively from Nikon, is a significant introduction for the new AF-S NIKKOR 300mm F/4E PF ED VR. Its adoption leads a breakthrough design with a smaller and lighter body, without compromising on quality,” said Garland Mak, Deputy General Manager of International Marketing Division Imaging Group, Nikon Singapore Pte Ltd. “The lens element doesn’t just provide aesthetics but its combination with definitive lens technology also effectively compensates chromatic aberration. The AF-S NIKKOR 300mm F/4E PF ED VR juxtaposes innovative optical technology with superb design and construction to make it the world’s lightest 300mm at only 755 grams, almost half the weight it would have been.”

Primary Features:

1. Optical proficiency
• Beautiful blur: An exquisite blurred shot to highlight a single subject amongst a busy landscape is made possible with the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm F/4E PF ED VR’s maximum aperture of f/4. Photographers can also achieve striking high-quality images even in low light conditions such as a recording of an indoor theatre performance.

• Exceptional accuracy: Photographers will be able to quickly achieve the right aperture for a faultless shot with an electro-magnetic aperture mechanism which delivers stable auto exposure control even during high-speed continuous shooting.

• Stunning sharpness: Nikon’s renowned VR image stabilization technology provides an effect equivalent to a shutter speed of 4.5 stops faster*3, effectively reducing camera shake and delivering dramatically sharper images in a wide range of conditions such as when capturing contact sports or a flock of flying birds. For an effective and responsive photography experience on athletes and other subjects that are moving rapidly and unpredictably, the fixed focal length telephoto lens is also equipped with a SPORT VR mode.

===================================

2. Design practicality
• Save time, travel light: Eliminating long hours of post-processing means that photographers get more time to hone their craft. This is easily achieved with a trio consisting of the PF lens element*2, Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element and Nano Crystal Coat to perfectly work in tandem for minimised chromatic aberration and ghosting.

In addition, photographers on the road can also pack lighter and smarter with the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm F/4E PF ED VR as the PF lens element also contributes to a lightweight and compact design.

300mm_F4E_PF_12_DG_2092_A3

• Built for adventure: A highly durable fluorine coat applied to the lens front effectively repels dust, water droplets, grease or dirt, ensuring easy removal even if they adhere to the lens surface.

• Quiet companion: For high-speed autofocusing that is accurate and quiet, the

AF-S NIKKOR 300mm F/4E PF ED VR also incorporates NIKKOR’s unique

Silent Wave Motor (SWM). The SWM technology unobtrusively converts

“travelling waves” into rotational energy to focus the optics, making it a handy companion even for those nocturnal photography expeditions.

300mm_F4E_PF_07_DG_1509_A4

1 Among 300mm fixed focal length (prime) AF lenses compatible with 35mm “full-size” format cameras available as of January 6, 2015. Statement based on Nikon research.
2 The PF lens, developed by Nikon, effectively compensates chromatic aberration utilizing the photo diffraction phenomenon. It provides superior chromatic aberration compensation performance when combined with a normal glass lens. Diffraction phenomenon explains that light has characteristics as a waveform. When a waveform faces an obstacle, it attempts to go around and behind it, and this characteristic is referred to as diffraction. The diffraction causes chromatic dispersion in the reverse order of refraction. Due to the characteristics of a PF (Phase Fresnel) lens that utilizes the photo diffraction phenomenon, when there is a strong light source within the frame or when light enters the lens from outside of the frame, ring-shaped coloured flare may occur according to shooting conditions. This phenomenon can be minimized with “PF Flare Control” to be included in Capture NX-D (ver.1.1.0 or later).
3 Measured in accordance with CIPA standards in NORMAL mode using an FX-format digital SLR camera.

ToyArt – Cubebot (Areaware)

==================================
Joby-Flash-Clamp
===================================

ToyArt – Cubebot (Areaware)
– by David Weeks Studio

R0012631

03rd January 2015, Singapore – Since more and more photographers are shooting toy figurines these days, I discovered an interesting toy recently. This is not your regular Lego Man, Danbo, 1/87 figures or Jap Anime figurines etc. Made from wood and held together by a strong elastic band and painted with bright craft colors, here I present to you, the Cubebot, an areaware series robot from John Weeks Studio.

R0012632

The Cubebot comes in 8 special colors and recently I came to know that they even have a multi-color version too! These Cubebots originated from Brooklyn, NY, USA and currently in Singapore, you can only buy this from The Wallet Shop. Retailing at SGD $16.00, the Cubebot promises lots of fun for photography.

R0012634

edit-IMG_4138

Unboxing the Cubebot promises no surprise as everything is packed ala minimalist and you will find a little piece of instruction and the Cubebot. Each Cubebot comes with an unique serial number and you can find the serial number both on the box and under the feet of your Cubebot. Comes in 3 sizes, the review unit that I have here was a “Small” Size.

R0012635

Transforming the Cubebot from the Cube form to the Robot form is pretty dummy-proof. Easy to handle and takes less than 30 seconds for you to change in between forms. This makes photographing the Cubebot rather easy and effortless.

R0012636

The Cubebot can be posed to about 80% of every possible poses that you can think of. Apart from some rather challenging poses, the Cubebot can do what you do, pose what you can pose. This again, makes the Cubebot an excellent photography subject for most expressives shooting.

R0012638 R0012640

With a little imagination and clever use of the surroundings, the Cubebot can be very “Human-like” and the bright colors makes it very contrasting to most outdoor scenes. This will be fun to carry around or anywhere as the Cubebot is small and compact. It is so light that I almost forgot that I was carrying it around.

R0012642

Be it Robot form or Cub Form, the Cubebot is simply fun to shoot and easy to abuse. It can be at anywhere in any form. And you can do anything to it. Even if someone accidentally stepped on it, don’t worry, the Cubebot is made from a pretty hard wood, it won’t crack like plastic. (Unless the blind bodoh who stepped on it is a 150kg badass who was looking at his smart phone while walking)

R0012644

===================================
Beta-Test_128
===================================

R0012653

The Cubebot is small and compact that you can even put it in your pocket and sneak it into museums without notice. While the guards are off their guards, you can shoot your cubebot within seconds and you are out of the museum without having a whistle blown at you.

R0012684

Cubebots can be posed against almost any scenes that you can think of. As mentioned earlier, the bright colors simply lets you create interesting and contrasty images that blends real scenes with your little Cubebots.

R0012690

Personally I like the Cubebot for its capability to pose in anyway I want it. I like the tiny weight, the bright neon colors and the Cubebot’s permanent “stunned” look. The asking price is very reasonable and if I have the money, I would probably buy a set for myself.

R0012692

The Cubebot promises hours and hours of fun for photographers who loves to shoot toys. It is highly poseable, simple, small and compact and you are limited by your own creativity and imagination. Get yours today from The Wallet Shop before it all runs out!

2014 Stats for Ourshutterjourney.com

===================================

2014 Stats for Ourshutterjourney.com
1

30th December 2014, Singapore – WordPress had just emailed me the summary of this website earlier and I am pleased to share with you, our readers, followers, advertisers, sponsors & subscribers! I could have keep this report confidential but I decided to share with everyone in view of the recent incidents that had happened involving local bloggers pointing fingers at each other on their followers statistics etc.

The key thing here is, if you have good content, there is no need to buy “followers” to please “advertisers”. I had build my audience over the years and I had advertised on many related websites and search engines to generate awareness that resulted in today’s statistics. Whenever I present my web stats to advertisers, I log on to my dashboard/ stats page in front of the advertisers and show them what I’ve got. I do not believe in numbers manipulations.

I am certainly pleased to share that if you need the original report from wordpress for the statistics for this site, please feel free to email me. I will forward you a copy. For now, I am extracting the key numbers from the full report and post here.

Like some veteran bloggers had told me in the past,
“If you have good contents, there is no need to find readers, readers will find their way to you.” In good faith, I had tried to create timeless contents that eventually became online resources which visitors from all over the world came looking for it.

Check out the key numbers below!

Pink Submissions #05 “Lady Rain” Editor’s Pick

==================================
Joby-Flash-Clamp
===================================
Pink Submissions #05 “Lady Rain” Editor’s Pick
Pink Feature

16th December 2014, Singapore – This is the 5th Pink Submissions by Pink Photographers Singapore (PPSG). And by far, one of the toughest theme ever. Both the sponsor and our editor AL agreed on the theme called “Lady Rain”. The rain, is a mysterious occurrence when the most extreme of elements meet. When it comes to matters of the heart, It is also symbolic where the world generalize rain and associate it with gloom, sadness, sense of loss, breakups, heartbreaks, failures, negativity, pain, tears, regrets & every other bad things or feelings you can think of. Expressing Rain with a female touch (Lady Rain) via photography will be a very tough one. Some may describe the rain like a lost lover just like Indecent Obsession’s hit song “Lady Rain”, where all the sadness and sense of longing comes together. While some may take it on a lighter note where rain is depicted as not a person but an abstract form of expressive photography where the images usually aims to keep the viewers in suspense, made the viewers think beyond what the photographer had presented.

#05 Pink Submissions “Lady Rain” – Inspired by the ongoing monsoon season, one can’t help but get emotional at times. When memories replay itself, good ones or bad ones, as the rain falls down, sometimes it does feels like the world is falling apart. Although some say learn to dance in the rain, I am sure they hadn’t tried dancing in the rain with a broken heart, and how sometimes when your heart is bleeding without any more pain and you are there struggling to put on a strong front. Lady Rain, i need you softly falling on my face. – AL, Editor

Before we go to the submissions, here’s some words from the Editor as well as the sponsor Red Label by Artist&Artisan (Schmidt Marketing).

“It was intended as an emotional and sad theme. Although some of the entries tends to be presented in a lighter touch, I must conclude that this round, is really not easy. Good Job Ladies!”
AL, Editor.

“The rain is something that we cannot avoid especially when we live in a tropical country like Singapore. Using it as a medium for the theme and to put it with photography, this is a real test of creativity. ”
Kenny Khaw, Schmidt Marketing Photo (Singapore).

Enjoy the entries!
(Winners Announcement after the jump)
(Appearance not in any order)

===========================

The Entries for #05 Pink Submissions “Lady Rain”

1. Lady Rain – The Heartbroken Lady Part 3 (心碎的女子 3)
– by Tan Hui Hui
“When the rain falls, so are my tears…”
“当雨滴打在我脸上, 眼泪也随着落下….”

TanHuiHui
Editor’s Note: We cry, when we feel pain, be it physical or emotional, the pain is often immersed and intense. Especially tears from a broken heart, combined with the falling rain, anyone will break down, anyone. Lady Rain indeed.

This is a very creative entry by Hui Hui. Using eyelashes over droplets of water that was supposed to express tears falling off the face of a lady and the smaller droplets being rain drops, this is a masterpiece by itself.

2. Lady Rain – Lovers
– by Alice Chia

“See it coming out of their eyes?
Be it a pair of garden grome,
Be it a pair of lovers,
Anywhere, anyplace
Beneath the umbrella is the place.”
Alice Chia
Editor’s Note: This entry by Alice Chia seems to have lighten the load of this theme with a pair of “Lovers” and a poem to match. Most romance started in the rain with lovers sharing an umbrella, but just as much break-ups happened in the rain when one party walk out of the umbrella and onto the rain. Interesting & light-heartening concept by Alice.

3. Lady Rain – Missing You
– by Fion (Wee N Soh)

“Listening to the sound of the rain, just like the sad songs that I’ve known before.
Pitter patter pitter patter, the falling rain had drenched my deepest thoughts & longings.
I am Missing you, while you are faraway in heaven, I wonder, if you are well and missing me too.”
“听 雨的声音,
像首首悲伤的歌曲
滴答 滴答 滴答滴, 滴进了心里最深的思念
思念你, 思念远在天国的你
不知你现在 过得好吗。”

WeeSoh
Editor’s Note: In life, many of us would have friends, pets or relatives who passed on at the various stages of our life. The sense of loss, the process of missing someone who will never return, it is an emotional reaction that all human beings will experience and it is emotionally painful beyond words. This is a rather dark and sad piece of work. She captured the rain on the window looking out to a gloomy blue twilight, while in her photo caption, Fion narrated about she missing someone who is in heaven. This piece made me cry.

4. Lady Rain – Cats & Dogs
– by Eileen Ng
“A cool and cold day having lunch .. raining cats and dogs … … feeling cold & cozy… ..”EileenNg
Editor’s Note: After looking at Eileen’s entry & her caption for a while, I really cannot relate how this photo can properly fit into the theme of Lady Rain. However, after looking at the photo again, it might be better if the caption can be changed to

“For the lady had endured the test of time, suffered the hard times, still she stand tall.
In the sun, in the rain, she helped built Singapore” – a tribute to Samsui women.

5. Lady Rain – The Heart Wanders
– by Felicia Lee Xiaomei
“When rains falls, the heart wanders.”XiaoMei
Editor’s Note: Yes, whenever the rain falls, the heart does wander. Strange as it seems, humans tends to think a little differently whenever one is commuting in the rain, alone.
It can be a self-protecting mechanism that our heart moves into a stage where we rationalize thoughts, and assess what’s in our hearts that made us make certain decisions. Felicia’s entry looks like she shot this from inside a cab/car while heavy rain falls outside. Looking at the rain drops and against the gloomy skies outside, I can’t help but my heart starts to wander off too. Good job!

6. Lady Rain – 314 Days
– by Zen Chen WeiHan
“As I stood by the kitchen window, it begun to pour. I looked across to the fridge and saw your photo. I drew a long breath and slowly exhaled, like a soft sigh against the window. Then I wrote, 314 days… Since you’ve been gone.”

“This number is real. It’s been 314 days since my beloved pet passed away. I feel that sometimes what makes us emotional can be anything other than a heartbreak from a relationship. But things like a departure of a loved one.” – ZenZenChenweihan
Editor’s Note: When my pet dog passed away a couple of months ago, I felt a longing sense of loss too. I remember the day when I visited her, looking at the urn where her ashes are, i wept quietly. All the good times that we had together came rushing back to me. All the laughter, the endless hours of play together – it seems like only yesterday that I was still holding her like a puppy. I can fully understand how Zen must have felt when her pet passed away. It’s more than a pet, it’s a friend, whom gave us unconditional love. When the rain fell, and when Zen sighed, the vapour formed on the glass and she wrote “314 Days” – the number of days since her pet left her. From her photo, I can feel the pain, the longing and how much she really missed her pet. Zen’s photo touched me deeply.

7.  Lady Rain – The Heartbroken Lady Part 2 (心碎的女子 2)
– by Tan Hui Hui
“A lost love, an empty heart…”
“爱走了, 心空了….”
TanHuiHui1-horz
Editor’s Note: I remember the times when my heart was empty. It felt hollow and it wasn’t a good feeling. The pain comes from deep within, where we kept our best memories and our darkest secrets. Huihui’s caption “A lost love, an empty heart” simply rakes up lots of memories for me. Tons of regrets, misgivings and past relationships came to mind. It’s not about what went wrong then, it’s about the emptiness that comes with these thoughts and memories. A heart penchant, hung against a glass with rain drops, brings Lady Rain to life. Good job!

8.  Lady Rain – The Note
– by Zen Chen WeiHan
“It reads <<Dear you, I just want to tell you.. I love you and goodbye. Take care.>>
What happened? Why? And how did the girl who wrote the note felt?
Was it by choice… Or was it inevitable?”ZenChenweihan1
Editor’s Note: When pain becomes too painful to bear, when the last bit of hope turned into disappointment, one can’t help but loses the will to live. For another day meant another day of endless torture and pain. I attempted suicide 4 times just this year alone, and I know how that level of pain felt like. Many will say that ending one’s life is the most irresponsible thing to do, or how stupid a person is, trust me, those who said this had not taste what I tasted or experience what I experienced. Zen’s work gave me an opportunity to view a scene that had been the result of a badly shattered heart. For indeed, Lady Rain is not anything positive when it comes to matters of the heart. It’s a rather sad photo.
ps: I am glad to be alive today for another day that I am alive, I still have a chance to achieve what I wanted to do. Thanks to my counselling centre and friends who kept me alive till today.

 9.  Lady Rain – Red Umbrella
– by
Alice Chia
“Under the red umbrella.”
Alice Chia1
Editor’s Note: This is one of the simpler entry submitted by Alice Chia.
Red is widely associated with female and an umbrella usually means rain.
This is a simple way to get the theme “Lady Rain” right and thanks for bringing on a little light-hearted moment to this article.

10. Lady Rain – The Heartbroken Lady Part 1 (心碎的女子 1)
– by Tan Hui Hui
“The last Valentine’s Day gift…”
“最后的情人节礼物…”
TanHuiHui3
Editor’s Note: Valentine’s Day gifts meant a lot to many people. It’s not about what the gift is, importantly it’s a symbolic token of acceptance of love, given to someone special by someone special. But when the Valentine’s Day gift was the last, it’s also the saddest piece of memory that one can hold on to. Huihui’s photo shows a person’s hand holding on to a necklace supposedly to be the last Valentine’s Day gift and the person that was holding on to it simply refused to let go. And the rain (could be a shower head) falling down onto this hand, brings on painful memories of whatever that necklace hold. It’s a sad piece. Lady rain became alive through Huihui’s work. Well done!

11. Lady Rain – Missing You
– by Fion (Wee N Soh)
“The afternoon storm, dark & gloomy.
Unable to curb my longing, or my heart that misses you truly.”
“午後的那场细雨, 灰灰的 沉沉的
沉不住心中涟漪, 更按捺不住一颗想你的心。。”
WeeSoh1
Editor’s Note: I can feel what Fion was trying to express. Those dark and stormy afternoons that looked and feels like 7.30pm type are the most soulful & heart-stirring. It makes you want to see the person that was on your mind and you start to long for that person’s presence. When the sunny afternoon became a shade of gloom, a person will also tend to experience insecurity, restlessness and sometimes even fear. I do admit that I cried the most during stormy afternoons, as those were also the times when I misses that special someone the most. Fion’s submission of a dark rainy afternoon with a lady walking into a shelter brings out the theme perfectly.

12.  Lady Rain – Together
– by
Alice Chia
“Although it’s a light drizzle, it is always (feels) good to have someone beside you.”Alice Chia3
Editor’s Note: Be it a drizzle or a heavy storm, sharing an umbrella and walking together with someone dear and special meant a lot. It is not just about companionship here. It’s about braving through the journey together under one umbrella and making every moment count & memorable. Good entry Alice!

13. Lady Rain – After the Rain
– by Jeslin Tan

jeslintan

Editor’s Note: Jeslin’s submission is an attempt to depict the moment after a storm had passed. And what’s left behind are the traces that Lady Rain had came and go. As the rain brings upon life to nature, it brings upon another new beginning. I hope I am reading Jeslin right in this note.

14. Lady Rain – Pink Lady Rain
– by Norafida Tomoshika Luketika
“I was covering for a 48-hour running event in October 2014. It rained en route past 100km midway point. Protecting my Canon DSLR was my first priority! Thereafter all protected. So I was Pink Lady Rain.”Norafida-vert
Editor’s Note: I decided to end this article with Norafida’s light-hearted photo of “Pink Lady Rain.” She was in pink, She is a lady and it’s raining! 🙂

Casino Photography: The Basics

===================================
Rogue_FlashBender_Banner_SJS===================================
Casino Photography: The Basics
image

08th December 2014, Singapore – Being a casino photographer is a tough job to pull off. Aside from the elements that make it such a difficult task as compared to landscape and portrait photography, there are external variables away from the frame that can make casino photography a daunting feat to accomplish. However, with the right tools of the trade, the extensive knowledge about the rules of photography, and with the way in which casinos look in a photograph, any photographer can capture that perfect shot and achieve what seems to be the impossible.

The rule of thumb is that taking pictures inside a casino is illegal (unless you’re a professional photographer hired by the management). However, there are some instances that taking photos are allowed. During a poker tournament, some casinos allow guests to take pictures of the venue and players.

If you’re planning on taking shots inside any casino, ask permission first or you might get asked to leave the premises. Casinos are very strict when it comes to bringing cameras inside because it is a business that’s prone to cheating. Taking shots of slot machines are usually forbidden. So, bloggers who review slot games are better off taking stock photos of online slot machines. Multilingual entertainment hub InterCasino, the world’s first online casino hub, has wallpapers and pictures of reel play for most of its games. Apart from high-res images, most casino providers allow their games to be played for free so journalists can better review them.

At Poker Tournaments
world-poker-tournament

If you’re at a poker tournament and taking photos are being allowed, make sure to capture moments when players are doing something. Don’t just snap photos of them when they’re sitting still. Wait for the right moment and take pictures when players are laughing, celebrating, throwing chips, or bantering with other players. Check out and compare the photos below. Which one is better, a photo of a happy poker player raking in his winnings (above) or a picture of someone doing absolutely nothing (below)?

36193

The Gear
Some people say that equipment is irrelevant in photography. However, legendary photographer Ansel Adams wouldn’t have captured the beauty of the Rockies if he didn’t use those large-format bellow cameras. In the same principle, casino photography also relies heavily on the right equipment. Since casino photography can only utilize the lighting within the casinos, it is imperative to carry lens with a wide aperture. It also pays to carry a flash that can be “bounced” off the walls and ceiling.

In the end, casino photography is all about capturing that certain “casino vibe” and translating it into photographs without the need to put words to it. While these tips can give you a head-start in taking photos inside casinos, you can only hone your skills through practice.

04th December 2014, Silk Road – As I was surfing the net and looking for information on the Silk Road, I stumble upon a travelogue written by a Travel Photographer Mr. Robert Yeo from Singapore. And he had went to the Silk Road with our accredited merchant and appointed Travel Agent Xing Asia. Robert recorded his account and experience from the Silk Road with his set of photos and captions which is interesting to read and a good reference for the rest of us. With permission from Xing Asia, I am re-posting Robert’s travelogue here for all of you. Enjoy!

ON THE SILK ROAD TRAIL
– Robert Yeo – Edited by AL

Taken from Wikipedia:

The Silk Road, or Silk Route, is a series of trade and cultural transmission routes that were central to cultural interaction through regions of the Asian continent connecting the West and East by linking traders, merchants, pilgrims, monks, soldiers, nomads, and urban dwellers from China to theMediterranean Sea during various periods of time.[1]

It has always been fascinating to me on how the Silk Road was traveled back in the ancient times. Imagine that you have to be traveling on the road for at least 3 years at any stretch on either direction and that you will have to make journeys through the deserts. It must have taken lots of willpower and conviction for those who made it through the journey. Personally, I wanted to experience what the desert is like, so when i saw that Michael of Xing-Asia is organizing a trip to the Silk Road trail, without hesitation, i jumped at the chance.

Our journey starts from Lanzhou and it was a 8 days trip. Lanzhou is the capital and largest city of the Gansu Province. It is an old and significant city as the Yellow River runs through the city from the west axis to the east axis. Our first stop was to visit the Yellow River. My first impression upon seeing the river was … it is indeed very Yellow in color! And being an old city, there were many waterwheels being used to irrigate water from the river to the farms in the old days.

20140712-IMG_3721 20140712-IMG_3726

The most interesting thing about Lanzhou folks is that they actually made rafts out of sheep skin. The rafts are used to ferry goods and people on the river. Michael and a few other daring tour members actually took a ride down the river on the sheep skin raft! However there was one thing that made me think: given that the flow of the river was very strong, it meant that the trips are often one-way. So if the ancient folks cruise down the river, does that means they will have to walk back up to their original positions??

20140712-IMG_3732 20140712-IMG_3733 20140712-IMG_3734 20140712-IMG_3750

On the second day of the trip, we headed out to Qinghai Lake. on the way to Qinghai Lake, we passed by the Kumbum Monastery in Xining. The monastery was huge and there were lots of monks who practiced there. The history behind the monastery was that Tsongkhapa was born nearby and his mother decidedly built a small temple at the site of his birthplace. Throughout the years, the temple grew into a full size monastery and it’s really huge. Today, it is an important site for religious studies and the monastery looks beautiful.

20140713-IMG_3753 20140713-IMG_3755 20140713-IMG_3757 20140713-IMG_376020140713-IMG_3765 20140713-IMG_3767 20140713-IMG_3770 20140713-IMG_377220140713-IMG_3774 20140713-IMG_3784

Leaving the monastery, we head west to Qinghai Lake. We reached Qinghai Lake just before evening reveals itself, so we wandered around and waited for the sun to set. The view of Qinghai Lake is fantastic, with a very cooling weather as we’re high up in the mountains, about 2800m above sea level.

20140713-IMG_3785 20140713-IMG_3787 20140713-IMG_3791 20140713-IMG_3799 20140713-IMG_380220140713-IMG_3795 20140713-IMG_3805 20140713-IMG_3809 20140713-IMG_3815

The sun actually sets quite late in Gansu and Qinghai Provinces, at around 8pm – 9pm, so it had been a long wait. The unfortunate thing was that sunset weren’t fantastic, as it was quite cloudy and foggy, so I didn’t managed to capture pictures of the sunset. However, just after the sun has set, the moon rises! And it was quite a full moon.

20140713-IMG_3828

Finally we’re done with our second day as we took our dinner and went back to our hotel rooms for a good rest. Early next morning, we carried on and headed west to a place known as the Chaka Salt Lake. On the journey there, we passed by beautiful grass fields on the Qilian Mountain Range. It was so beautiful that we had decided to stop the vehicle and went on foot to check out the place.

20140714-IMG_3869 20140714-IMG_3872 20140714-IMG_3873 20140714-IMG_3874

The salt lake is huge, measuring a total of 105 square kilometers. There is enough salt there for the consumption of the world’s population for more than 160 years!

20140714-IMG_3877 20140714-IMG_3882 20140714-IMG_3884 20140714-IMG_3886

After visiting the Chaka Salt Lake, it’s time for a long road journey along the Qilian Mountains to Dunhuang and we have to stop in the middle nowhere for the night. The whole road journey is very long for this trip and we spent a lot of the time traveling on the coach. China is big, this seems like a norm here.

When we reached Dunhuang area, the first stop was the Dunhuang Yardang National Geopark. The park was full of landforms that shows the Yardang geological feature of the area. On the day that we’re there, the park guide told us that it was the hottest day of the year, at 38°C!! However, despite the high temperature, the whole area was very windy and it does not feel warm when the wind blew at us. Comparing to our humid Singapore, I sweat so much lesser there.

20140715-IMG_3891 20140715-IMG_3893 20140715-IMG_3895 20140715-IMG_390420140715-IMG_3909 20140715-IMG_3912

On the way out of Yardang National Geopark, we stop by another interesting spot. That spot was Yumen Pass, also known as Jade Gate. In ancient times, this was a pass through which the Silk Road passed, and was the one road connecting Central Asia and China. In other words, this is the Customs Office of ancient China! Whoever crosses the border of China have to go through this pass.

20140715-IMG_3914 20140715-IMG_3917 20140715-IMG_3920 20140715-IMG_3926

Carrying on the journey the next day, we visited Mogao Caves. A brief description of the caves taken from Wikipedia is as follows:

The Mogao Caves or Mogao Grottoes (Chinese: ; pinyin: Mògāo kū), also known as theCaves of the Thousand Buddhas (Chinese: 千佛洞; pinyin: qiān fó dòng), form a system of 492 temples 25 km (16 mi) southeast of the center of Dunhuang, an oasis strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road, in Gansu province, China. The caves may also be known as the Dunhuang Caves, however, this term is also used as a collective term to include other Buddhist cave sites in the Dunhuang area, such as the Western Thousand Buddha Caves, and theYulin Caves farther away. The caves contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art spanning a period of 1,000 years.[1] The first caves were dug out in 366 CE as places of Buddhist meditation and worship.[2] The Mogao Caves are the best known of the Chinese Buddhist grottoes and, along withLongmen Grottoes and Yungang Grottoes, are one of the three famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites of China.

Photography were not allowed inside the caves in order to preserve the caves for as long as possible, no photos to be shown. I just managed to take 1 picture of the exterior of the most prominent cave there.

20140716-IMG_3932

The history behind these caves are very impressive and it is a bit overwhelming in terms of the achievements the ancient Chinese was able to produce. The artwork found inside the caves are beautiful and it is hard to imagine how they are all being done up. Firstly the caves are dark, and some of them are pretty huge in size. Without the use of modern technology, the ancient artists are able to paint up many wall murals and even erect statues inside the caves.

However it is also saddening to know that of the murals and scriptures found inside the caves were stolen by foreigners and now they’re being kept in museums in other countries and not within China. There’s a really long history behind the caves and the best way to learn it is to visit the place yourself.

After visiting the Mogao Caves, we visited Echoing-Sand Mountain & Crescent Lake. Crescent Lake is a crescent-shaped lake in an oasis near Dunhuang. The Gobi Desert surrounds the lake and the sand dunes around the lake is called Echoing-Sand Mountain, due to the sound of the wind whipping off the dunes, the singing sand phenomenon. The Chinese government have turned this place into a tourist area, and lots of touristy activities can be found here; including camel rides, paragliding, buggy rides, etc. In other words, there’s plenty of people around. We’re waiting for sunset, so we took our time to explore the area and climbed up the sand dunes to get a high vantage point.

20140716-IMG_3934 20140716-IMG_3935 20140716-IMG_3937 20140716-IMG_3946 20140716-IMG_395220140716-IMG_3954 20140716-IMG_396220140716-IMG_3982

Early next morning, we set off to our next destination. A little bit of convincing from me to Michael caused him to make a detour to White Horse Pagoda. Nice little place to visit with a bit of history behind it.

20140717-IMG_3988 20140717-IMG_3992 20140717-IMG_3995

The next destination is Xuan Bi Chang Cheng (悬壁长城). I have totally no idea what it is called in English, but a loose translation means Overhanging Great Wall. Basically the place was part of the Great Wall of China.

20140717-IMG_4013 20140717-IMG_4015 20140717-IMG_4020 20140717-IMG_402220140717-IMG_4024 20140717-IMG_4028 20140717-IMG_405720140717-IMG_4031 20140717-IMG_4054

After visiting this part of the Great Wall, we move on to Jiayu Pass. Jiayu Pass is the first Pass at the west end of the Great Wall of China, so you can pretty much guess the importance of this Pass in ancient China. The Pass itself is huge in size, along with houses for the generals that were out-stationed here.
20140717-IMG_4060 20140717-IMG_4068   20140717-IMG_409720140717-IMG_4104

We went outside to a nearby patch of open land and hopefully, get some sunset pics of Jiayu Pass. Unfortunately, the sky was very cloudy and so no dramatic sunset. Still, I must highlight to everyone that the landscape scene there was beautiful.

20140717-IMG_4119 20140717-IMG_4123

Next morning, we visited The First Pier of Great Wall. This place is supposedly the start of the Great Wall in maybe the Song Dynasty. It was built right beside the cliff walls of the Beida River. In ancient times, this area also housed several military camps.

20140718-IMG_4159 20140718-IMG_4172 20140718-IMG_4178 20140718-IMG_4179

In the afternoon, we headed east towards Zhangye. The main attraction there was Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park. The landforms here are absolutely beautiful. There’s the whole bit of history on how these landforms are formed. In ancient times, the area was actually submerged under water, most probably under a lake or river. Over the years as the water dried up, the land got pushed up around due to the moving tectonic plates thus forming the colourful landforms. A beautiful sight to behold, if you ask me.

20140718-IMG_4181 20140718-IMG_4182 20140718-IMG_4185 20140718-IMG_418620140718-IMG_4187 20140718-IMG_4196 20140718-IMG_4204 20140718-IMG_421320140718-IMG_4220 20140718-IMG_4227 20140718-IMG_4231 20140718-IMG_423820140718-IMG_4239

Finally, we’re down to the last day of our tour. We need to head back to Lanzhou and it’s a long journey from Zhangye, so the last leg of the trip was pretty much spent on the roads. It was pretty much the pretty mountainous landscape and we passed by some Tibetan mani stones as well.

20140719-IMG_4242 20140719-IMG_4245 20140719-IMG_425120140719-IMG_4253 20140719-IMG_4254  20140719-IMG_4259

We passed by some rapeseed plantations along the way as well and boy, it was beautiful. According to the guide, this area has the biggest rapeseed plantations in the world.

20140719-IMG_4276  20140719-IMG_4281

We finally reached Lanzhou after a long journey on the road and it was time to have an early night. We have a very early flight to catch the next morning and we certainly do not want to be late.

Frankly speaking, this trip is one of the better trips that i had went. It had been an eye-opening experience for me especially the part on knowing more Chinese arts & culture. Now that i’ve been to the first pass of the Great Wall on the western end of China, i am now tempted to visit the first pass of the Great Wall on the eastern end!

Until then!
Robert Yeo

Editor’s Note:
Reading Robert’s account and experience to the Silk Road makes one wonder just how beautiful the place is. And following through his travelogue para by para, the itinerary is tiring and lots of traveling is involved. However, with a good travel agent and a good guide, road trips like this can be more fun and interesting than you can ever imagined. It is an experience that everyone should try – once in a life time.

Sony Kicks Off “WHAT’S YOUR VIEW?” Social Activation Campaign
comingsoon6

02nd December 2014, Singapore – Sony South East Asia (“Sony”) is pleased to announce the launch of its “WHAT’S YOUR VIEW?” regional campaign – a social activation endeavour to capture two distinct photographic perspectives through the lenses of Sony’s sleek α5100 and α6000 mirrorless cameras.

Eight prominent Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), based in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, will define the campaign’s direction with their lifestyle and technical approaches via the α5100 and α6000, respectively, as well as share their experiences and insights behind their snapshots. They’ll consist of a team of professional photographers who will front the α6000, along with a panel of leading bloggers who will unleash their creativity using the α5100. Sony’s “WHAT’S YOUR VIEW?” commences on 28 November 2014 and concludes on 1 February 2015, with Sony’s Power of Imaging South-east Asia Facebook page elected as the main outreach platform.

The campaign will showcase two monthly photo themes. Elected KOLs will snap photos revolving around these themes, and upload them to a [Gallery] application seated on Sony’s Facebook page for viewers to browse, like, or share. KOLs will also provide opinions and techniques on their online channels such as blog sites and social media outlets. Links to these contributions will be shared on Sony’s timeline to encourage interactivity between the community and influencers.

Key Opinion Leader for Sony α5100 – Melissa Koh (SINGAPORE)
– One of Singapore’s admired fashion icons and entrepreneurs, Melissa uses her blog and Instagram to express herself as well as share her thoughts and fashion inspirations with the masses. His dedication to this genre has led him to become one of the first photographers from Asia to work at the Red Bull headquarters in Austria, a leading global advocate of action and adventure sports. Another exciting component of Sony’s “WHAT’S YOUR VIEW?” initiative includes two photo contests, where consumers are encouraged to send in their own photographs inspired by the central themes. Each contestant may submit up to five images per challenge with a maximum file-size cap of 10MB per file. Sony’s photo challenge is open to six countries in the SEA region, and this includes Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

To participate, contestants simply have to visit “WHAT’S YOUR VIEW?”, register their account, and submit their desired photo entries. Besides the desktop application, a mobile optimised version of the contest will be available for users to access the app via their smartphones or tablets. The first photo challenge will run from 28 November 2014 to 28 December 2014, followed by the second contest which will span from 2 January 2015 to 1 February 2015. Attractive prizes will be awarded to one winner per country, plus a grand prize winner who will be selected out of the six countries after the campaign ends. This lucky recipient will win a USD 3,000 travel voucher. Elected KOLs will form a judging panel to handpick the best photo for each challenge, while the grand prize winner will be determined by Sony. Pink Submissions #04 “Creative Selfie” Editor’s Picks
Pink Feature

21st November 2014, Singapore – The “Pink Submissions” is into its fourth installment and the submission is seeing a lot more entries this round. Pink Photographers Singapore (PPSG) has since gotten more new members through our engagement campaigns through the Pink Submissions. For this round, our sponsor Sgcamerastore had given the ladies an interesting theme “Creative Selfies”. Selfie are globally defined as the act of shooting a photo of oneself with one hand while having the background seen as part of the image. While getting a selfie is really easy, getting creative will be tough as some of the members had reported (giggles).

A total of 63 entries were received this round and sadly I have to reject 09 due to non-compliance or wrong theme. Before we start, let’s hear what the Judges/ Sponsors have to say about this submission/ theme.

“Looking through all the entries, some were super creative while some were – just selfies. And there are some which I do not understand the photo at all. It had been a challenging theme, and more challenging to judge.”
AL, Editor.

“We saw some really creative selfies this round and we hope to inspire more creativity into the members’ photos. ”
Mel & Jan, Sgcamerastore (MP Associates).

OK, that’s the message from our sponsor for the #04 Submissions!
As usual, we were not able to feature every submitted photos due to photo size or for any reasons. So, I had picked out the below photos from the crop to run this feature.

The D4S incorporates the EXPEED 4 image-processing engine, together with a Nikon FX- format CMOS image sensor. Further supported by an effective pixel count of 16.2-million pixels and improved auto white balance, photographers can capture beautiful images for use straight out of the camera with stunning sharpness, enhanced depth, and natural skin tones. Its range of standard sensitivities from ISO 100 to ISO 25600 also produces images with sharper edges and smoother, richer colours.

The Nikon D4S is equipped with a new Group-area AF mode for powerful and versatile autofocusing. When Group-area AF is selected, the camera uses one focus point selected by the user and one each above, below, to the right, and to the left of the selected focus point, for a total of five focus points, for focusing. By capturing the subject within the five-point group, even if it is small and moving quickly and erratically as is often the case when photographing athletes and animals, the intended scene can be captured with greater certainty without focus shifting to the background.

The impressive camera also makes work smoother for photographers on the go, with exclusive Nikon technologies. A new RAW Size S option1 records images using 1/4 the number of pixels used for full-sized RAW images, making editing them on a computer faster and more convenient. The D4S is also equipped with an Ethernet connector2, enabling the smooth transfer of high-quality image data, regardless of the format (JPEG, NEF, TIFF), after capture.

Bringing together Nikon’s advanced camera development technologies, the Nikon D4S expands the possibilities for professional photographers who demand the best performance and image quality even in the most challenging environments.

1 Editing functions built into the camera and available from the Retouch menu, such as NEF(RAW) Processing and Image Overlay, cannot be applied to images captured at this setting.

2 Compatible with the 1000BASE-T standard.

The Nikon D810
810

The new Nikon D810 is a film maker’s dream, designed to empower photographers to unleash their full potential and produce extreme high-definition, high-quality images and video. The D810 offers the ability to record stunning Full HD video, while a 36.3-megapixel image sensor and wide ISO range of 64 to 12800, combine to offer unrivalled images, rich in tone and definition. The D810 delivers shots that put the camera in a class of its own, with outstanding versatility that enables it to excel in a wide range of environments and situations.

The D810 features support for recording of 1080/60p Full HD videos, facilitating a rich cinematic experience.

Optimized data processing designed to make use of the

36.3 megapixels, the highest effective pixel count in the Nikon range, provides rich, detailed video with smooth exposure alteration, even in shifts or changes in brightness. The D810 also supports recording in FX- and DX-format for two different angles of view, using just a single lens to enhance production efficiency.

The Nikon D750
750

Providing the FX experience in its smallest and lightest form3, the latest Nikon D750 offers superior maneuverability and agility in a powerful, compact package. The D750 enables the freedom of photographic expression with sought-after functions such as built-in Wi-Fi and a tilting monitor, both a first for Nikon FX-format cameras. The D750 also presents itself with 24.3 megapixels, 91K-pixel RGB sensor, and an outstanding high-speed continuous shooting rate of approximately 6.5 frames per second for both FX- and DX-formats. In addition, a fast and highly accurate 51-point autofocus (AF) system and a newly developed AF sensor which enhances low-light performance, makes it possible to shoot using AF in dark environments where it is impossible to focus with the naked eye.

The innovative D750 goes against the common assumption that the higher a DSLR’s specifications, the bulkier it becomes. Revolutionary technologies have never looked better, in a strong yet sleek, lightweight camera body with no compromise on image quality. Its powerful FX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 image-processing engine are enveloped into a monocoque structure framed by carbon fiber composite materials4 and magnesium alloy to provide durability while capturing beautiful, balanced shots.

Created for a discerning audience, the D750 is a superior camera with similar full-scale features and performance as those in the high-end range, giving photographers the room to expand their capabilities and evolve their skills.

4 Sereebo®, which is manufactured by Teijin Limited. This new material, which utilizes carbon fibers, is very lightweight without sacrificing strength or durability. As this material is well suited to use on camera exteriors because its surface is incredibly smooth with no carbon fiber bosses, it is the perfect cover material for cameras with a monocoque body structure

The Nikon D610
610

The Nikon D610 is a portable FX-format camera designed for the everyday. Created for both enthusiasts and professionals in mind, the D610 is equipped with first-rate Nikon technology, including a 24.3-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor and the EXPEED 3 image processing engine, along with an ISO range of 100 to 6400 (expandable from 50 to 25600), to deliver exceptional image quality. The D610 is ready to meet the demands of the most advanced photographers, boasting a unique 39- point autofocus (AF) system, and compatibility with an aperture value of up to f/8 for capturing incredibly sharp images in all situations5.

Film-makers will also be pleased with the D610’s ability to record Full HD and 720p videos, with full manual control of the exposure, allowing for switching between FX- and DX-format (1.5X) in Full HD. Users can also experiment with time-lapse photography by combining still photos into a movie with high-speed playback up to 36,000 times.

5 Five center focus points and one point to the left and right of them in the middle line (seven in all) are compatible with f/8.

For photographers who want to be at the heart of every image, the full range of Nikon’s FX- format cameras is now available in stores.

10 Shooting Tips for 1/87 Photography

10 Shooting Tips for 1/87 Photography

IMG_9620Photo: John had decided to putt from a Chocolate Chip Cookie.

07th November 2014, Singapore – The 1/87 Photography trend was suddenly revived recently and I personally know of a few photographers within my circle who also started to dabble with this. After my recent article on 1/87, I had received all kinds of queries pertaining to this interesting photography genre which is a mix of macro, toy art & portraitures. From asking me about where to buy to how to shoot, I had decided to compile this list of shooting tips for those who are trying out for the first time or those looking to start this. So here I am, presenting to you the 10 Shooting Tips for 1/87 Photography!

#Tip 01 – Buying
IMG_9621

Photo: Doing Carpentry Works on a Carrot Cake.

1/87 scale figurines are easily available from ebay or amazon. However, one may be overwhelmed by the thousands of results from these sites as there really many for sale out there! But please note, quality differs from manufacturer to manufacturer and I will suggest getting the mid range ones as the figurines offers more details and better paint work. The cheaper ones are usually badly painted and these are good for “background” or “bokeh” so you may wish to plan what you want to shoot before you purchase any. There are many brands available from various countries and they range from dirt cheap to freaking expensive. So please do your research as I am not paid to advertise for any of the brands. I will also advised against buying those with Adult Themes as you cannot really compose and shoot them with much options. And these Adult Themes figurines costs much more than regular ones. (You have been warned)

Photo: Joggers Jogging on BlackForest Trail.

My personal recommendation will be to purchase those figurines that are “engaged” in an activity like golfers, workers, painters etc, so that you will have more versatility when it comes to shooting options. You may also wish to consider those that are “sitting” too.

#Tip 02 – Handling
IMG_4334
Photo: Plastic Forceps from First Aid Box, SGD $0.55 (Guardian Pharmacy).

Due to the tiny size and sometimes “weak” paintwork on the figurines, I will advise against using hands to handle these figures. Instead, try to get a clinical forceps or a light pressure tweezer to handle the figures. Just imagine you are handling precision tools and you will understand what I mean. You will also find that when you are doing the posing, the forceps are very helpful too.

#Tip 03 – Storage
IMG_4335Photo: Transparent Plastic Box with Dividers, SGD $2.00 (Daiso)

For storage wise, I will suggest not to “overcrowd” your 1/87 figures as it makes searching difficult and there will be an increased risk of paintwork lost. Try to group the figures together in your own preference but keep the group small. I use a plastic box with dividers to organize my figurines so that it will be really easy to find the figure I want to shoot.

#Tip 04 – Posing
456719-500x500
Photo: Scotch Clear Mounting Tape. SGD $7.50 (Giant)

Many of these figures are unable to “stand” on its own. Some manufacturers actually recommended their own brand of glue to help the figure stand. I will recommend the Scotch Clear Mounting Tape. All you need to do is to use a sharp scissor and cut a little dot off the tape reel and use for your figures. And a roll of this clear gel-like tape will last for a really long time.

#Tip 05 – Lens Type
1
Photo: I used this 50mm lens to shoot my 1/87 images.

For this article’s photos, I used a 50mm lens (with some taken with an iPhone). While many may argue that a Macro Lens should do a better job but I beg to differ. Reason being the 1/87 figures does not have facial expressions painted properly due to its sheer size and macro lens will give you too much details to the point that the photo is no longer interesting as viewer will be looking at the detailed figurine instead of your overall composition. A regular prime lens like the 50mm will be a much more suitable lens. Those who are using a crop sensor body, you may wish to consider using 35mm or 50mm, for full frame sensor users you may wish to consider 50mm or 85mm as your lens choice.

#Tip 06 – Lighting
IMG_9647
Photo: A mix of handphone torch light and natural sunlight from the sky window inside the mall.
I will recommend the use of natural light, ambient light, torchlight or a dedicated macro flash (not a regular speedlite or even the built-in pop up flash). Due to the size of the figurines, a regular flash or built-in flash will make the photo to be very harsh and you will not be able to get anything decent out of it. Try to use a higher ISO if the environment is not sufficiently lighted since most cameras of today can handle higher ISO. Your phone’s torch will be a great help too.

#Tip 07 – Choosing Background
IMG_9643
Photo: Ice Skaters having a great time on my cake. Take note that I had framed other table top items into the photo to create that “1/87” factor.

This is a tricky one. Many photographers tried shooting this and make the image to be a 1/87 world-realistic photo which is NOT what 1/87 photography is about. Unless you are an expressionists who will rebuilt a full scale 1/87 town complete with buildings and vehicles etc, otherwise you will want your 1/87 to be interesting. I will recommend looking for a familiar scene that has small little things like your office table with stationeries, kitchen top with kitchen wares, or even at a dinning table with food! (which was what I did here). The fun part of 1/87 photography is the “Irony Factor”, that has 1/87 people doing their things in our world, with our stuff of course.

#Tip 08 – Shooting Settings
IMG_9660Photo: Use of my phone to show the size comparisons and to create an interesting 1/87 scene.
Since I mentioned using Prime Lens as the preferred choice of optics, please do not engage yourself in a bokeh dreamland. 1/87 demand the clarity of the surrounding scene to make the image interesting and the ability to create a one-look story-line. Opening up your apertures to F1.2, F1.4, F1.8, F2 & F2.8 is not what you want to do. When the DOF is so shallow, no one can make out where you posed the figures and that totally defict the purpose of shooting 1/87. I did most of my photos here between F4 to F7.1.

#Tip 09 – Editing & Processing
IMG_9664
Photo: Do not do tight cropping unless the subject (secondary) is able to fill up the frame and viewer can still make out what is it.

Cropping is the main editing trick here for 1/87 photography. Similar to macro, you crop what you need – however with a little twist. You need to include the surrounding scene with emphasis on the 2nd subject or the 3rd subject to make your photo interesting. Otherwise might as well call it “Portrait-for-your-1/87-friend” right? Try not to overdo (saturation) your colors too – remember, you want the Irony Factor so the everyday items that you included in your frame must still look natural and in their real color. Tight cropping is not recommended, unless your 1/87 is posed on an object that is not too big to start with. In my example here, cookies and cakes.

#Tip 10 –  CreativityIMG_9653
Photo: Susan decided to putt to the last hole on the blackforest cake.
This is probably the most redundant tip in this article as all of you already know that most photography work requires your individual creativity to create interesting and unique images. I am including this tip here as a reminder for all of you to be creative. The tiny 1/87 size further demands you to think out of the box and even force you to envision a scene before you even start posing the figures. I am including this tip here also because I only have 9 Tips and “10 Tips” sounds better.

Have fun people!
Ed.

NIKKOR interchangeable lens reaches total production milestone of 90 million

===================================

NIKKOR interchangeable lens reaches total production milestone of 90 million.
Nikon proudly marks its milestone for a total production of 90 million NIKKOR lenses for the Nikon interchangeable lens camera. In addition to the milestone, NIKKOR lenses equipped with the Silent Wave Motor, an exclusive Nikon technology, reach 50 million for its total production.

Nikon 90 Mil

04th November 2014, Singapore – Nikon Singapore Pte. Ltd. is proud to announce its milestone achievement of 90 million in total production of NIKKOR lenses1 for Nikon interchangeable lens cameras. The milestone, officially reached at the end of October 2014, is also accompanied by the equally momentous 50 million total production mark for NIKKOR lenses equipped with the Silent Wave Motor (SWM) technology.

In 1959, Nikon (then Nippon Kogaku K.K.) released the Nikon F as well as its first NIKKOR lenses for Nikon SLR cameras, including the NIKKOR-S Auto 5cm f/2. The NIKKOR tradition henceforth actively continued over the years with advanced optical technologies deployed onto its lenses and consequently expanding its lineup of interchangeable lenses for the Nikon 1, Nikon’s AdvancedCameras with Interchangeable lenses first released in October 2011.

Within months of its announcement of the 85 million mark in January 2014, NIKKOR lenses in its many years of rich history and knowledge in optical technology, continues at a steady rate to mark its next production milestone.

In addition to the 90 million milestone, the total production of NIKKOR lenses equipped with the SWM, an autofocus motor developed by Nikon, has reached its 50 million total mark. The achievement comes within eighteen years since the 1996 release of the Ai AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8D IF-ED, one of the first lenses with the SWM.

pic_040502_2

Nikon’s SWM converts “traveling waves” into rotational energy to focus the optics, which in turn provides for exceptionally quiet autofocus photography. All NIKKOR lenses for SLR cameras released since 2004 have been equipped with the SWM2.

To date, a total of seventy two3 zoom lenses, fixed focal length (prime) lenses, and Micro lenses covering a broad range of focal lengths from ultra-wide-angle to super telephoto, equipped with the SWM have been released for FX- and DX-format digital SLR cameras. The SWM-adopted series also includes one3 fast, medium-telephoto, fixed focal length (prime) lens for Nikon’s range of Advanced Cameras with Interchangeable Lenses.

1Interchangeable lenses for Nikon SLR cameras and Nikon 1 Advanced Cameras with Interchangeable Lenses

2Does not include specialty lenses (PC-E lenses).

3The total number of NIKKOR lenses equipped with the SWM currently available (as of November 4, 2014).

Among the most recent products which adopted the SWM is the AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR, released in August 2014. This lens, compatible with Nikon FX-format digital SLR cameras, represents a new generation of high-performance super-telephoto lenses with its significantly lighter weight.

Nikon then further responded to the photographers’ needs in September 2014 by adding the ultra-wide-angle AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED to its lineup of fast, f/1.8 fixed focal length (prime) lenses for Nikon FX-format cameras. Naturally, the AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED utilizes the latest optical design technologies to achieve superior resolution. The lens also adopted Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coat lens coating which controls generation of flare and ghost, while its ED lens elements achieves superior rendering capability with little chromatic aberration. The lens is remarkably portable due to its compact size and light weight, and it enables one of the best photographic expressions with the utilization of a wide angle and beautiful blur characteristics.

In June 2014, Nikon released the 1 NIKKOR VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 for its Nikon 1
and this super-telephoto zoom lens with a maximum focal length equivalent to 810mm is the world’s smallest and lightest4 lens in its class. The current lineup of 1 NIKKOR lenses consists of twelve lenses with focal lengths ranging from 6.7mm to 300mm (angles of view equivalent to 18mm to 810mm in 35mm [135] format) for coverage of a broad range of focal lengths, from ultra-wide-angle to super-telephoto. The lineup will be further expanded in the future.

4Among interchangeable lenses with a focal length that exceeds the equivalent of 600mm in 35mm [135] format for digital still cameras equipped with autofocus functions available as of March 13, 2014. Comparison of the minimum volume with each lens. Statement based on Nikon research.

Together with the Nikon FX and DX-cameras, the extensive range of excellent NIKKOR lenses and its consistent production lineup are highly capable to fulfil a photographer’s desire of a perfect shot.

All information is current as of the date of release. It is subject to change without notice.

About the NIKKOR brand
NIKKOR is Nikon’s brand of photographic lenses. The NIKKOR name arose from adding “r”, a common practice in the naming of photographic lenses at the time the name was established, to “Nikko”, the Romanized abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku K.K., the original name used when the company was established.

Nikon’s own high-quality standards are applied to all stages from initial design and development to final product release for design that responds to user needs, and production system and inspections that ensure the superior quality of NIKKOR lenses.

Nikon’s lineup of lenses for cameras with interchangeable lenses currently consists of more than 90 types of lenses, including ultra-wide-angle to super-telephoto lenses, fisheye lenses, zoom lenses, micro lenses, and PC-E lenses that support a wide variety of applications, as well as 1 NIKKOR lenses for advanced camera with interchangeable lenses.

In 2013, Nikon celebrated the 80th anniversary of NIKKOR lenses with a variety of activities conveying the advantages of NIKKOR lenses, under the theme of “ART meets TECHNOLOGY makes HISTORY” including creation of the “Eyes of Nikon” photo collection, and collaboration in the creation of “Masters of the Light”, a collection of artistic photographs captured with NIKKOR lenses. The celebration continued in 2014 with the “Eyes of Nikon Photo Exhibition” held at Nikon Plaza Shanghai.
