Hip Hop Theme Group Photo

28th June 2013, Singapore – This is the last feature of the Photography Group Series. We hope you had enjoyed our 3 earlier articles on this series. To close the series, we have the Photography Khaki (Group)!

Photography Khaki Group is one group that aims to provide a platform for photographers at all levels, to display their works to share/learn/contribute and above all, to progress together in the art of photography. The group was founded by Alex and Anthony Lim, both competent photographers in their own rights.

Photography Khaki was setup with the goal of bringing people together, be it photographers, models, makeup artistes or even people who have not even picked up the hobby! The group wants a platform where everyone can freely share their services and learn from each other in a family-oriented style where there are no discrimination, no sarcasm and just pure love for the art of photography!

Photography Khaki excels in many areas of photography. Looking at the group’s FB page, there are so many different photos from different genres being posted each day – from macro photos, to landscape photos, to food photography & many others. And from the posted photos, the quality and standard of every photos shared are excellent!

The group had made significant impact to the members in many ways. With a group, members have a place where they can chat with the others members, post questions and read about tips and tricks that have been posted by other members – more of a community sharing. It does not end there, members have a platform where they can showcase their photos and receive critiques from other members, and from there, everyone improves along the way and strive (together) for greater heights in photography.

An Interview with the Founders of Photography Khaki Group

Ed: How does photography inspires the founders?

PK: Photography is an art form that inspires me to no end especially when I manage to capture that special moment and preserve that in history.

Ed: How does managing a photo group feels? Any ups & downs?

PK: Managing any groups is never easy, you will definitely encounter both ups and downs. But at the end of the day, when you see your group grow, when you see everyone working together to achieve a common dream, that, no matter how tough or how bad it was, it’s worth every while!

Sentosa - Unyielding

Marina Bay - Slit
Picture: “Marina Bay – Slit” Photo by Vinz Eymard

Ed: How frequently does the group meet up and is there other activity that had
been organized that is non-photography related? Like social events?

PK: We try to organize frequent meet ups between members in the form of outings, gatherings and photo shoots. While most of the events organized have been photography related. We still manage to bond rather well and from there grow further as a group. We will definitely want to organize social events and outings such as KTV sessions, makan sessions and such, so keep a look out for our event invite!

Ed: In your view, what is the most important element in photography?

PK: Light light light! This cannot be emphasized enough. Photography is all about capturing your subjects with light. Learn about the different natural lightings available. Mornings and early evenings are called the golden hours for photographers because the light provided by Mother Nature is perfect for capturing photos. Noon time typically provides very harsh lightings which will cause your photos to overexpose.

Ed: In the diversified and sometimes complicated circle of photography, have you met good people as well as bad people?

PK: There are all sorts of people in this complicated and more often than not, competitive environment. While good people are those who typically manage to share a bond with us and learn and grow together, people who have shown forms of bad attitude have been separated. I believe that we are here to learn from each other. No one deserves to be looked down on, nor be the target of cyber bullying.

Ed: Please describe the relationship among you & your photography members in 01 sentence.

PK: A group of passionate photographers aiming to grow together as one

Ed: Is there any Allied photography group that your group associates with?
Any rival groups?

PK: We firmly believe that making friends is more worthwhile than making enemies or rivals. Should anyone feel that we are a threat, we would gladly distance ourselves away from whoever uncomfortable with us! We want to be known as a gracious photographic society and we will work hard to ensure that this is realized!

Ed: Is there a person/ group that inspires your group?

PK: None in particular, but the group will appreciate anyone that can help each other without reservations and will inspires us, and teaches us. We believe that no matter what we do, we are here to learn.

Ed: What visions & dreams do you have for your photo group?
PK: We hope that one day, all photographic groups will come together as one, as friends and share what we have in common & even differences with each other!

Ed: Thank you Photography Khaki for the wonderful and insightful sharing!

Here’s a quick intro to the people behind Photography Khaki
clip_image002
Photo: Alex Lim

Started photography in 2007 to help his brother (Anthony Lim), to take his wedding photos using the Canon S5IS.
Since then, Alex had ventured into portraitures, events, flower shots, family shoots, and travel photography and others!

Self taught, Alex bought his first DSLR, a Canon 5DMKIII and at the same time, started his photography Facebook page called Pimodi (Picture-Modifier) and also Photography Khaki Facebook Group to know more friends who share the passion of photography. Formed for about 6 months, Photography Khaki Facebook Group has grown from a few members to the current numbers of almost 1500 members. Alex hope that the group will continue to grow larger so that the group can have a larger member base and everyone can share, contribute and learn from each other.

clip_image002
Photo: Anthony Lim

Anthony first stepped into photography about one and a half years ago, influenced by a group of Nikon users. Landscape photography has always been his interest and he have spent countless hours shooting and learning the steps of post processing and perfecting his landscape photos.. Throughout his photographic journey, Anthony has learned and improved with the help of the group members and he hope to continuously improve and produce photos of different perspective of the place he calls home!

Photo: Catherine Guan

She started photography a few years back. Catherine calls photography “the stage” whereby she can share how photography allows her to capture every aspect of her learning journey in photography. Every photos shot by her simply reminds her of every minute scenes, small moments and experiences that people might have forgotten. Her favorite quote, “Life without photos is like a man without an identity.”

25th June 2013, Singapore – ourshutterjourney.com recently collaborated with Cathay Photo Store Pte Ltd for “ToyArt by the Bay” photo competition. We received a total of 69 entries from 26 participants out of 32 attendees. The judges commented: “The (photo) standard of this competition is very high and does not seems like an amateur photography group. Most of the photos are beyond semi-pro standard.”

Featured Photography Group – West Shooterz

12236_4847933508633_1278851666_n
Picture: Westshooterz at an annual reunion dinner

21st June 2013, Singapore – This is the 3rd featured article from the special photography group series that we will be running for this month.
For this week, we are going west!! West Shooterz is the name!

West Shooterz is a pretty “new” photographic group in Singapore dedicated to all photography enthusiasts, mainly made up of people with a broad range of skills and varying knowledge levels. Ranging from the “keen to learn” novice, to the full-time professional, West Shooterz are united by their common love of photography. Founded in 2008 with a handful of founding members, today West Shooterz is a 370+ strong photography group. (Correct at press time)

481119_10151290403954117_427188247_n
Photo: Picture by Peter Yeo Hwai Teck

Pioneered by a group of photographers, they are Mr Larry Haydn, Mr Peter Yeo, Mr Skyimage U’sov, Mr Jackie Num, Mr Michael Neo, Mr Alvin Gay, Miss Dayana Mohamad & Mr Patrick Tay.

West Shooterz was initially formed and named for a very simple but meaningful reason – the pioneering members are all residents from the constituencies in the west zone of Singapore, from Jurong, Clementi and Bukit Batok, and other western zones of Singapore.

481691_10151152112369117_1835519167_n
Photo: Picture by Peter Yeo Hwai Teck

The group never sticks to a specific genre, the group is always exploring and expanding the possibilities of photography at different levels.
That, in a way had inspired the members to move on from 1 genre to another and through the process, many had found their calling (to certain genres) and found their directions in the complicated world of photography. That does not end there. Members also find the sharing by the other members to be very helpful, that actually created a platform where members learn from another member – just like “community learning”.

We have dedicated a few interview questions specially for the founders of West Shooterz as below:

——————————————————————————-
An Interview with the Founders of West Shooterz

Ed: How does photography inspires the founders?

WS: We get really inspired by seeing the works of others (members) and the team spirit that we had built along the way. It is great that we are all  “like-minded” people and we all found each other at West Shooterz.

Ed: How does managing a photo group feels? Any ups & downs?

WS: Not exactly Ups or any Downs. Managing West Shooterz gives all of us a satisfaction – this feels better than monetory gains; especially with the people/photogs that we had met. Awesome bunch of people.

Ed: How frequently does the group meet up and is there other activity that had
been organized that is non-photography related? Like social events?

WS: We make an effort to meet up at least once a month to do some non-photography related outing such as TCSS and dinner.
And also, West Shooterz started a “tradition” that we have our Annual Re-union Dinner for all the members and their families just after every CNY.

Ed: In your view, what is the most important element in photography?

WS: In our views, we feel that the willingness to learn and explore beats every other factoring reasons to be an important element of photography. In short, the attitude.

Ed: In the diversified and sometimes complicated circle of photography, have you met good people as well as bad people?

WS: We had met tons of good people. So far, we were lucky enough to not meeting any BAD people.

Ed: Please describe the relationship among you & your photography members in 01 sentence.

WS: “Family”

Ed: Is there any Allied photography group that your group associates with?
Any rival groups?

WS: We do not consider any group as “rival”. On the contrary, we will prefer to work alongside with other groups as part of the group’s learning journey.

Ed: Is there a person/ group that inspires your group?

WS: Everyone can be a source of inspiration. And we meant anyone.

Ed: What visions & dreams do you have for your photo group?

WS: We wish our members to progress and enjoy everything & whatever we are doing for them.

Featured Photography Group – Landscape Hunters Asia

LHA Outing Feb 2013
Picture: The Landscape Hunters Asia (LHA)

14th June 2013, Singapore – This is the 2nd featured article from the special photography group series that we will be running for this month. For this week, we have a pack of photography hunters – more commonly & widely known as Landscape Hunters Asia (LHA)!

As a “Hunter” this group is considered as “hardcore” by most photography standards and to keep the hunting spirit in the group, every photo shoots by the group is planned and the members employ different strategies in the hunt (for photo shooting sites). LHA practice lone wolf hunts as well as pack attacks. (Shooting alone or in a group) It can be daunting for newcomers to the group and whenever LHA members are all out in full force for a shoot, you can imagine how the venue will look like. Just imagine, a pack of 20 or more photographers descending on a site like Gardens By The Bay’s Super Trees.

At times, LHA outings may sounds and looks like a battle with all Hunters vying for the best angle, the occasional inter-twined tripod legs and shutter clicks. It’s indeed a hunt.

Landscape Hunters Asia – The founding members are Edward Adios, Chester Chen, Jonathan Danker, Vince Chong and Christopher Harriot.

Landscape Hunters Asia was founded in 2011. A group of hardcore Landscape/Architecture photographers needed a dedicated social media platform to share ideas and network globally. However, there wasn’t any on Facebook so the founders set out to build a group catering to just landscape and architectural photography.

Vince

To start a group from ground zero, the founders roped in some acquaintances and photographers and people whom the founders looked up to for their own passion and expertise. The rest is history. From five heroes to 888 members (as of 15 May 2013), the group population exploded! The group was initially set up with Asia in mind, however it is open to anyone from anywhere across the globe.

LHA wants photographers who shoots and want to share their works while learning the craft without politics, advertising, spamming, poaching or the distraction of other non-photography related subject, this is the place to be. LHA members are amongst the best in Singapore, Asia and the world.

Ed

Currently most of the LHA members are from South East Asia. The group serves as a platform for sharing and learning on photography but the real intention is for LHA to be a resource for learning about other Hunters (landscape) playgrounds since travel and photography go hand-in-hand. LHA has played host to visiting photographers like Elia Locardi, Beboy Photographies, Bali and Thailand photographers. Similarly, Penang and Bali photographers have hosted Singapore Hunters.

As the group name suggest, LHA’s primary focus is Landscape and Architectural Photography. The group founders shared that they didn’t want any distraction so they are very specific and strict with the genre. For those photographers who wish to showcase other genres like macro, street, product or pet photography, LHA advised these photographers to go to other photography groups. Well, this may sound arrogant on first read, but think about it again, since the group started based on a specific genres, I think it is only fair that LHA has such a rule in place to keep things in order.

chester 1

LHA members consists of photography noobs to semi-pros, since joining the group, the members have shown a lot of improvement in terms of style, composition, technique & processing skills, this is what LHA wants – for everyone to improve together.

We have dedicated a few interview questions specially for the founders of LHA as below:

——————————————————————————-
An Interview with the Founders of Landscape Hunters Asia (LHA)

Ed: How does photography inspires the founders?

LHA: It’s a daily inspiration to see the world differently in all shapes, sizes and light.

Ed: How does managing a photo group feels? Any ups & downs?

LHA: Managing the group can be taxing as we all have other commitments. We had experienced lots of ups & sometimes it feels like it is too good to be true. We haven’t really experienced any setbacks or downward change since the group started. In fact, some members have been so dedicated to the group that we’ve enrolled them to take over some of the administrative responsibilities. This also gives the founding members some breathing room to work on other ways to engage and bring excitement to the group.

harriot 2
Picture: Photo by Hunter Christopher Harriot.

Ed: How frequently does the group meet up and is there other activity that had
been organized that is non-photography related? Like social events?

LHA: LHA has little pockets of friends that meet up and shoot almost on a daily basis. This is certainly hardcore. The best non-photography related activity all take part in is shopping. I guess it is kind of photography related but not actual shooting. We like to “poison” (influence) each other with photography gear purchases. We’ve gone out for drinks and dine but usually it involves photography at the same time. We once tried to go for a meal together and no photography but we failed. (laughs)

Ed: In your view, what is the most important element in photography?

LHA: Lighting is the key to photography as that is what you are capturing to make your image. The other aspects complement lighting so there really isn’t one important element. The elements have to come together at that instance to create the shot. Look at it as a package that must be complete before a good photo is created.

harriot 1
Picture: Photo by Hunter Christopher Harriot.

Ed: In the diversified and sometimes complicated circle of photography, have you met good people as well as bad people?

LHA: In life we will always meet good and bad people. In photography, there are certainly people who have their own mindset, their own way of doing things, their old diehard habits. We can’t change them but we can try our best to be open towards them. If they also cannot accept us for who we are, our comments and our advices, we have no choice but to move on. To us, it makes no sense in wasting our precious time and energy on such people as that takes away everything from what we love to do most.

Ed: Please describe the relationship among you & your photography members in 01 sentence.

LHA: Every Hunter sees another Hunter like Family. Across the Globe we bond as one through our passion.

Chris Harriot
Picture: Hunter Christopher Harriot.

Ed: Is there any Allied photography group that your group associates with?
Any rival groups?

LHA: We do not associate ourselves with any other groups as we see ourselves as unique and a leader in this Genre.

Ed: Is there a person/ group that inspires your group?

LHA: We are inspired by the work of Elia Locardi, Beboy, Daniel Cheong, Mike Hollman, Michael Freeman, Anthony Gelot & National Geographic Photographers.

J Danker 1

J Danker 2

Ed: What visions & dreams do you have for your photo group?

LHA: We aspire to build the group where it can be a commercially viable operation that can help grow amateurs to professional status through the addition of training/education programs. As we are also networking with other countries we’d like to explore the idea of intercontinental photography expeditions. Right now we’d like to see our active members grow as we seem to have hit a plateau where the regulars are the only ones participating.

Ed: Thank you LHA for the wonderful and insightful sharing!

P & G Photographic Centre – Service with a Personal Touch

home top

Quick Introduction
P & G Photographic Centre is not new to many professional photographers in Singapore. After all, they have been in the photography business for over 30 years now. Trust me, 30 years is a long time in the photography industry. Managed by the Phan Brothers (Andrew Phan & David Phan), the friendly duo are famous with their craft. Their skills & expertise are well-known across the industry & well-respected by both veteran photographers to beginners.

Advice is Free, Honesty is priceless
Although most camera repair shops offers free advices & checking, how many are honest advices?
P&G is reputated to be one of the best used camera shops in Singapore to get real world advice on photography equipments.
I am sure many of you who had visited P&G before can relate to that. One thing I personally like about P&G is that they do not beat around the bush just to inform you that your camera is going off to meet its maker soon, or the fact that your terminally-ill lens has only 3 more shoots to permanent retirement. What they saw or discovered from checking your equipment, they will tell you directly while offering the best available options at the same time. Unlike other shops that will try to pressure you into selling your “dying” gears to them or repairing at a cut throat price, P&G will offer you options and then leave it to you to decide. Such honesty is priceless and very much commendable by today’s business standard.

One Stop Solution Centre
In today’s fast-paced society, convenience is an important factor when it comes to photography – especially for those that makes a living out of clicking shutters. Every visit to P&G always have me smiling without fail. For the simple reason that every time I walked in with a problem, I walked out having the problem solved or at other times, I simply left my “problems” behind only to return when P&G had solved it – professionally. You see, P&G is indeed a one-stop solution centre as I called it. From repairing cameras & lenses, they also buy in used equipments, sells a great comprehensive lot of inventory ranging from vintage cameras/lenses to the latest models in the market. And that’s not all, amongst those equipments on display, there are many rare & limited editions items that many of us dreamt of owning them one day. In short, there’s something for everybody!

Expertise, Experience & Engineering
Ask P&G how many cameras or lenses have they dismantled in the last 30 years, likely they will smile at you and their minds wanders into lala-land. Their experience in camera equipment repairs can easily make it into any book of records for the highest number of cameras/lenses (of many brands) – dismantled & repaired. While many photographers out there will take this 3 decade-long experience for granted – citing that this is a norm for camera repair shops, I would like to clarify and add that – yes, this may be a norm, but how many actually does a good job too?
All the vintage cameras that I had sent in, all came out of P&G in tip top condition and became fully operational after that. To sweeten the deal, P&G even offers warranty for the repaired item and that gave me (and many others) an added confidence and a peace of mind.

Best of all, P&G also does an excellent job in modifying cameras & lenses! Using their knowledge on camera engineering, they also offer modification services for your equipment to serve your shooting needs and working requirements. Now, pause a second and think, who else does this in Singapore? No one except P&G!

Beyond Business
It’s just like friends meeting up every time I visits P&G. The Phan brothers are also widely known by the industry for their friendliness and hospitality. I enjoy chatting with them on every visit. They are two of the very few humble people in the photography industry who are willing to share their experience with beginners, share industry updates to the regular customers, simply helpful and just being themselves. Talking to them makes me feel that as if I had known them forever (although I’d only started visiting P&G in 2010).

As I write, I am already looking forward to my next visit to P&G. You should check them out too.

Featured Photography Group – Mentorgraphians

SONY DSC
Picture: The Mentorgraphians

07th June 2013, Singapore – Kicking off the special series for the month of the June 2013, we will be featuring 4 photography groups weekly for this month. We are opening the series with MENTORGRAPHIANS, an “elusive photography group” – not that the group are secretive or anything, just that the group is not a public group and at most time, members joined by invitations only. Mentorgraphians members are made up of beginners who are just starting out in photography to well known full-time professional photographers. The group has an excellent mix of demographics that will create a great mentoring environment for all the members.

Calvin Chan_Depth_01
Picture: Photo by Mentorgraphian Calvin Chan for the theme “Depth”.

Founded by Andrew JK Tan, the group was recently formed in March 2013. Andrew is not new to this industry; he is a veteran photographer who has been shooting for more than 30 years while juggling between his full time job as a Business Development Director in the semiconductor industry. These days, he still takes up photography assignments on a freelance basis – but selectively.

David Wang_B&W_01
Picture: Photo by Mentorgraphian David Wang for the theme “B&W”.

So how did the group started? Andrew shared that readers from his dedicated photography page “Mentorgraphy” had requested to him that a group should be formed and to also create a platform where Andrew can personally mentor, coach and render help to members on anything regarding to photography. To start things off correctly, Andrew had set directives like having a group Vision & Mission to ensure that all members are in line with the group’s values.

Group Vision:
– To be the resource that help transform every MENTORGRAPHIAN into an award winning photographer

Group Mission:
– To provide trusted and proven photography advice to any MENTORGRAPHIAN in need of advice.

Eddie Seng_Depth_02
Picture: Photo by Mentorgraphian Eddie Seng for the theme “Depth”.

Working on the group with the Vision & Mission in mind, Andrew decided that this should be a closed group for a start – that is why photographers were invited to the group by invitation-only. In a real positive way, this means the group can be technically smaller and easier to manage. This also realistically allows Andrew to answer and critique every image submitted by members. Small is an understatement here as the MENTORGRAPHIANS is now a 160+ members strong photography group.

Joanna Ng_Depth_02
Picture: Photo by Mentorgraphian Joanna Ng for the theme “Depth”.

The group excels in various photography genres but there are also many very capable Landscape, Macro and Street photographers in this group, the group consists of members that are “experts” in almost every genre of photography and Andrew strongly promote and encourage the members to experience every genre of photography. He even started an initiative for his members recently to help them excel in their photography.

Sports_Andrew JK Tan
Picture: Sports Photo by Andrew JK Tan

Called the “Weekly Mini-Challenge”, Andrew will decide on a photography theme and the members will be given 1 week to shoot & upload their images (there is no limit to the number of images to upload) according to the theme. To help the members out, Andrew will personally share a couple of photo examples on the selected theme to encourage the members especially the beginners. This is really an open invitation (and a cover) for members to try every genre of photography over time. Mentorgraphians are currently into their 10th Mini weekly challenge and the responses fantastic. The recently ended challenge #9 with the theme “Black & White” attracted more that 65 images submissions from the members. And the submission does not end there; Andrew will personally critique each image focusing on the various ways to improve the member’s image further!

When asked if the group had made a difference to the members, Andrew admitted that Mentorgraphians had served and still serving its purpose. Judging from the fantastic interaction he get from the many members that actively participate in providing commentary and critique, the high participation rate in the Mini Weekly Challenges (averaging at least 40+ entries per challenge) and the fact that the members are trying genres of photography which they do not normally do. This is more than just making a difference; this is more like impacting the members in a much greater way. Since the group started (March 2013), Andrew had personally commented and critiqued 300+ images uploaded by members! And in April, there was a Mentorgraphy Sharing Session held at Marina Bay City Gallery where 40+ Mentorgraphians members attended the 4 hours session!

We have dedicated a few interview questions specially for Andrew as below:

——————————————————————————-
An Interview with Andrew JK Tan, Founder of Mentorgraphians

Founder Andrew JK Tan_6835
Picture: Andrew JK Tan, Founder of Mentorgraphians

Ed: How does photography inspires you?

Andrew: Photography is a burning passion!!! I have been doing photography for more than 30 years now and in fact I have increased my involvement in photography by trying to “give back” as much knowledge as I can. By starting my dedicated Mentorgraphy page and the Mentorgraphians group is only just the beginning.

Seeing the progress from the photographers that I had mentored and coached through the group activities/events, my photography page and during many occasions when I am shooting together with the members does gives me thrills and satisfaction that I love. The fact that I can help and influence even in the smallest of ways makes all this work and sacrifice worthwhile!!

Ed: How does managing a photo group feels? Any ups & downs?

Andrew: Having went this far, I can only see the UPS!!!! …. I do have to admit that I was initially afraid that members would only sit back, be silent and not participate actively, but my fears was unfounded as the participation rate has been overwhelming and it is consistently increasing.

Ed: How frequently does the group meet up and is there other activity that had
been organized that is non-photography related? Like social events?

Andrew: Since the group was formed in March 2013, we have had 5 photography events and 1 major photography sharing session which I hosted at Marina Bay City Gallery. During the sharing session, I shared my Hokkaido wildlife images and related wildlife photography tips, in addition I had invited a special guest CS Ling, Nikon Singapore’s notable wildlife professional photographer who also came & shared her insights on being a wildlife photographer.

As for social events for the group, Mentorgraphians is still in it’s infancy stage, I am pretty sure we will have some social gatherings very soon.

Macro_Andrew JK Tan
Picture: Macro Photo by Andrew JK Tan

Ed: In your view, what is the most important element in photography?

Andrew: In my view, there are TWO elements that are of equal importance, the first one is the PASSION for photography. Having the burning passion is vital in ensuring the persistence, the self-motivation to continually learn, practice and spread the wonders of this wonderful hobby. The second element which is of equal importance is CAPTURING THE LIGHT which is essential in creating a photograph……..without LIGHT & without PASSION (photographers) beautiful & meaningful photography would cease to exist.

Ed: In the diversified and sometimes complicated circle of photography, have you met good people as well as bad people?

Andrew: I have been involved in photography for over 30 years, I must have been very fortunate as I have only met good people. I have not met a single “bad” person in the circle of photography. However, I must admit that I had met many overly-competitive photographers who at times can be very protective and defensive. Then again, if a person is good at the craft, the quality of one’s images and the professionalism of a responsible photographer will still prevails and be recognized by all.

Landscape_Andrew JK Tan

Ed: Please describe the relationship among you & your photography members in 01 sentence.

Andrew: We are ONE BIG CLOSELY KNITTED FAMILY that fully supports each other.

Ed: Is there any Allied photography group that your group associates with?
Any rival groups?

Andrew: So far Mentorgraphians is not associated to any other photography groups. I do not rule out any future association with other photography groups and I also do not view any other groups as rivals. At the most I will refer all other photography group as “friendly competition”. Every group needs some form of competition to continuously improve.

Creative_Andrew JK Tan
Picture: Creative Photo by Andrew JK Tan

Ed: Is there a person/ group that inspires your group?

Andrew: I have to say NO to this question for now. Honestly I am glad that there isn’t one, I truly want my group to form our own identity and not be influenced too much by another person. I want to form and mold a group with members that are self-motivating, independent and yet willing to help a fellow member or for that matter, any other photographer freely.

The other aspect that I am really proud of this group so far is the absence of any discussions on the topics of photographic hard wares or the photographer’s individual merits. Mentorgraphians is just focused purely on photography.

Nature andrew_jktan_snowmonkey
Picture: Nature Photo by Andrew JK Tan

Ed: What visions & dreams do you have for your photo group?

Andrew: I have mentioned this to my photography friends numerous times. There have been occasions where photographers have questioned my motivation for the selfless sharing; some believes that there could be some ulterior motives when in fact there is none. The following is my yardstick of a successful photographer:  “The success of a photographer is NOT measured by how many awards that photographer has garnered, but by how many award-winning photographers he/she has mentored and coached” hence the Vision of this group (see above).

My ultimate dream for this group is for every Mentorgraphians to become a better Mentorgrapher than me and vigorously promote the continued growth of this wonderful hobby by “passing it on” and sharing his/her knowledge to others in need.

Ed: Thank you Andrew for the wonderful and insightful sharing!

Special Thanks to Andrew Tan & Mentorgraphians!

Sigma Local Sets vs Sigma “Grey” Sets

R0010470
Picture: Local Set vs Grey Set – Can you tell the difference?

4th June 2013, Singapore – Recently there has been spates of incidents where the question of buying original sets (distributed by local Sole distributor) versus grey sets (parallel imported sets) were once again posed to the market and put to the test. So how does buying either one stacks up?

Well, many will ask themselves, is it worth to buy grey sets at a significantly lower price and take the risk of buying a lemon? Or should they buy locally distributed sets as the additional cash paid gives a great peace of mind should anything (touch wood) goes really wrong. What do you think? I guess the answer will be very much each to his/her own.

Let me share an incident that had happened quite a while ago. A buyer walks into a camera store and asked for a lens. Then the buyer bargains and bargains. The shop owners wants the business and what he did was, he took out the Warranty Card from the local set and slipped it into a Grey set box – then sold the lens to the buyer at a really “good” price. The story may have ended there but not in this case. As fate may have it, the set turned out to be a lemon. The lens keep focusing front back erratically.  The buyer decided to bring the lens to the local service centre.

At the service centre, after letting the customer officer checked the lens, the lens had to be “admitted” for checking by the technician so the procedure of registering the owners’ particulars started. Then the warranty card was produced. The customer service officer checked the serial number on the lens, then on the warranty card – found that it is not the same and alerted her manager. The manager came, took the lens and went to another computer and entered the serial number, then the manager came back to the buyer and informed him that the lens serial number and the warranty card does not matched. And from the system, the lens was also not from Singapore but from Myamar. The buyer flew into a rage. But left the centre after the manager informed him that they will still repair the lens for him – at a cost.

Naturally, the buyer call up the shop where he bought the lens and questioned the shop owner. The shop owner simply told the buyer that since he (buyer) wants it cheap, he sold him cheap, everything else is not his problem – then the line went dead. And what happened to the local set that has no more warrranty paper inside the box? Well, the shop owner had called the distributor and claimed that the lenses delivered to his shop were without warranty papers right after he sold that lemon lens. A set of warrranty cards were sent to him hours later following his call.

Who is at fault here? The person selling the grey set? The buyer that went cheapo commando? The distributor that replaces the warranty cards too easily? Or is it market forces? I will leave the final answer to be answered by you.

Meantime, the photo at the top shows 2 Sigma consumer lenses. On first look, can you tell which box is from the local distributor and which box is parallel-imported?

Now take a look at the below photo.

R0010471
Picture: Local Set vs Grey Set – Notice the Box on the left with the Sticker?

The box on the left comes with an additional sticker that says in bold and large font “Sigma 2 years warranty”
with some fine text below it. The box on the right does not have a sticker like this on anywhere of the box.

The truth, local sets (Singapore & Malaysia) comes with this unique sticker, grey sets don’t.

The local distributor for Singapore, Sigma Marketing Pte Ltd shared with us that this sticker is unqiue to Singapore & Malaysia.
This sticker were specially produced and printed & added to all Sigma equipments that are distributed by them before each and every single item leaves the warehouse.

R0010472
Picture: Local Set distributed by Sigma Marketing Pte Ltd comes with a unique sticker.

R0010473
Picture: Local Set distributed by Sigma Marketing Pte Ltd enjoys additional 06 months warranty.

To reward local buyers who shuns away from buying grey sets, the fine print on the sticker actually says that
the equipment comes with an additional 06 months waranty, now that is really buying with a peace of mind.

So next time when you are out shopping for Sigma lenses, remember to look out for the sticker. And if the sticker
looks tampered or weird, do call up Sigma Marketing Singapore at 6273 9622 (during Office Hours) to verify if the
Sigma equipment you are about to purchase is a locally distributed set.

And lastly, remember, with demands, comes supply. And the supply can be from various sources.
Happy shopping~!

In Singapore, Sigma cameras & lenses are exclusively distributed by Sigma Marketing Singapore Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Sigma Japan Corporation.

Nikon Singapore Moves Operation to New Location. (with Editor’s Notes)

sX5

Nikon had announced on 20th May 2013 that they are moving their operations out of Fuji Xerox Tower and will start operating from their new Capital Square from 10th June 2013.

Nikon Singapore’s new office will be as followed;

Nikon Singapore Pte Ltd (Office)
23 Church Street
#13-07 Capital Square
Singapore 049481

Nikon Customer Service Centre / Nikon Showroom
23 Church Street
#13-03/04 Capital Square
Singapore 049481

—————————————————-

Editor’s Note:

I have had photography students switching systems due to the “not-so-friendly” location of service centres and moving to other brands
just because the brand’s service centre is easier to access, outside town, near MRT, etc.

While this may come across to you as a joke – as people should be looking at what a system can do for the user
rather than the location of the service centre. Sadly – but in Singapore context, we are sort of “cultured” differently.
Parking rates, ERP charges (means you have to pay to drive into city during certain time of the day) does puts people off.
And it will not help if the location is more than 5 minutes walk away from any MRT stations or far away from the nearest bus stops.
Almost forgot to mention that high parking charges does puts people who drives too.

Well, I hope that all of the above that I mentioned will not determine the buying decision of the consumers, but trust me, it will, in a way affect how a consumer (in Singapore) will react given the additional trouble that one had to take just to get a camera or lens serviced.
While photographers in other countries have no issue driving 40 miles away to get to a service centre, 40 minutes to get to a service centre sure puts many off. Different country, different standards – so don’t slam me for this.

I have compiled a list of service centres below for everyone’s reference.
(In Alphabetical Order)

Canon Singapore – Keppel Bay Tower (Outside but near CBD)/ 10 mins walk from Harbourfront MRT)
Nikon Singapore – Fuji Xerox Tower (Inside CBD/ 20 mins walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT) *Current Office
Nikon Singapore – Capital Square (Inside CBD/ 15 mins walk from Raffles Place MRT/ Telok Ayer MRT) *New Office
Olympus Singapore – Valley Point (River Valley/ Outside CBD/ 20 mins walk from Tiong Bahru MRT)
Panasonic Singapore – Bedok South (Outside CBD/ 15 mins walk from Bedok MRT)
Pentax Singapore (APD Singapore) – Bukit Merah e-Centre (Outside CBD/ 20 mins walk from Redhill MRT.)
Ricoh Singapore (APD Singapore) – Bukit Merah e-Centre (Outside CBD/ 20 mins walk from Redhill MRT.)
Samsung Singapore – Orchard Road (Inside CBD/ 5 mins walk from Dhoby Ghaut MRT)
Sigma Singapore – Bukit Merah e-Centre (Outside CBD/ 20 mins walk from Redhill MRT.)
Sony Singapore – Wisma Atria (Inside CBD/ 5 mins walk from Orchard MRT)
Tamron Singapore (JEL) – Changi North Way (Outside CBD/ Takes forever to walk from Simei MRT or Expo MRT or Changi Airport MRT)
Tokina Singapore (Cathay Photo) – Tan Book Liat (Outside CBD/ 15 mins walk from Tiong Bahru MRT)
