Ever wonder what would have been the result had Apple decides to work more seriously with Camera Manufacturers?

Amazed? Before you leave this page to Amazon or eBay to search for this, Please don’t.
I would like to clarify again that the above is imagined and it is not real. I am just talking about the possibilities.
All specs above are stolen from a variety of camera’s specifications ranging from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus & Samsung.
Please don’t come after me for whatsoever reasons. This post is meant to be a joke. 🙂
Happy Shooting!
The Olympus TOUGH series is the company’s range of powerful compacts that are capable of withstanding the elements in the harshest of environment. As the series name “TOUGH” suggested, these cameras are designed for “abuse” as all TOUGH Series (TG) members are waterproof, freeze proof, knock proof & crush proof. At the top of the hierarchy sits the TG-1, the flagship, the toughest TOUGH by far.
The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS is super rugged, and the lens has the equivalent of 25-100mm (in 35mm format) and useable aperture of F2.0-4.9 – extremely good & sensible specifications for a wide variety of applications. Now, that is not all, the TG goes deeper into the water now and it submerges to 12m (40ft) and you can drop the TG-1 from about a 2 meters height and the camera will not break. And of course, if you decides to keep your TG-1 inside your freezer instead of your dry cabinet, you can do that too as the TG-1 is designed for sub zero temperature – best for snow environment too!
The TG-1 iHS is built around a 1/2.3″-type 12MP back-lit CMOS sensor and a TruePic VI processor to make the most of its output. With a camera like this, we wouldn’t want to review this camera in Singapore, instead, we decided that the TG-1 should go places – and it landed in China. Our travel Editor, Yu Ling were given the task of reviewing the Olympus TG-1 and put the camera through its paces. Yu Ling took the “Ancient Tea Horse Trail” (Lijiang to Shangri-la) 3300m above sea level, a windy, dusty, freezing cold ( -7 degrees) route that will put the TG-1’s capability to the test.

The Olympus TG-1 Experience: From Yu Ling
I find the Olympus TG-1 to be extremely reliable. It gives me certain edge over my DSLR as the zoom range of the TG-1 allows me lots of creativity uses and without having the need to change lenses. Li Jiang is very dusty with lots of fine sands in the air, I cannot imagine changing lenses often and having sands in my camera body. The battery life lasted longer than I expected, cold temperature are the greatest enemy of battery, surprisingly the supplied battery lasted well way beyond my expectations. Color rendering is superb for a compact, all the photos here are un-edited except slight cropping and straightening, apart from that, what you see is what you get (i got). The sheer compact size, solid built TG-1 are really made for these things, for the worst of shooting conditions.
This is the first time that I will want to have this little cam in my camera bag whenever I go traveling again.
What I Like:
– Compact & Light (Compared to my DSLRs)
– Solid Build (can take real abuse)
– Nice Colors.
– ISO Handling is decent.
– Battery life.
– Ergonomics.
– Good useable focal range.
– Like the Super Macro Mode
– Nice Creative Filters (Cuisine Mode & Landscape Mode)
What I Dislike:
– Wider end of the focal range can be improved. Wider please.
– No Manual Model (Full control of Shutter Speed & Aperture)

The Olympus Pen E-PL5. Photo by Julian Tan.
Whilst the world are raving (& comparing) about the specifications of Olympus’s latest Pen, the M4/3 E-PL5,
I wanted to see real photos from real photographers and not looking at specifications or “File” photos.
I managed to laid my hands on the E-PL5 – courtesy of Olympus Imaging Singapore, but due to the recent busier
schedule with the season peaking with more assignments, I decided to approach two friends to help me out.
They are none other than Edward Tian (better known as Edward Adios) & Julian Tan who are both well articulated in various genres of photography. (Do a search on them on google and you will know what this pair of friends are capable of.) So I met up with both of them, passed them the E-PL5, and told them “use this to do what you usually do. send me some photos taken from this cam in 2 weeks.” I waited in anticipation, and 2 weeks later, ………………….
(See Commentaries after the Photo Spread).
Works of Edward Tian (Edward Adios) using the Olympus E-PL5.

Enjoyed looking & Amazed by Edward’s works?
I sure do! Let’s see what Julian had returned with.

I am sure all of you will agree with me that the above works submitted by Edward Tian & Julian Tan are Excellent Pieces.
Looking at their photos, I am sure they put the E-PL5 through its pace and they certainly enjoyed the E-PL5.
However, nothing is perfect, here’s the Pros & Cons – as reported by the 2 photographers.
Words from Edward Tian –

Picture: Edward Tian (Edward Adios)
The PROs:
– Good size & grip (*with the supplied grip attached)
– Easy to use dials
– In-camera HDR bracketing function
– Art & Scene filters
– i-Auto function really takes the pain off everything and produces quite good image
The CONs:
– WB can be a little unpredictable.
– Supplied lens not of good quality
– Short Battery life
Words from Julia Tan –

Picture: Julian Tan
The PROs:
– Small and Compact.
– Very good for landscape photography
– Works well with 4/3 ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses.
– Very advanced Bracketing functions.
– iAuto works very well.
– Decent all-round kit lens
– Silent shutter
– Appeal to the ladies
– Touch-screen Functionality
– Fun Art Filters
The CONs:
– Auto white balance not as accurate as OM-D EM-5
– Low-Res rear LCD screen. (An issue when focusing in the dark, WB too orange)
– Grip not comfortable
– Kit lens does not have good macro magnification
———————————————————————————————————-
I hope everyone had a visual feast, the photos produced by the Olympus Pen E-PL5 by Edward Tian
& Julian Tan are of exceptional good quality. So it’s not the camera, it’s the person using it that really matters.

Two Photographers, Two OM-Ds, Two Visions.

Picture: Chester Chen (Left) & Allan Lee, Editor (Right) with their OM-Ds.
A beautiful embodiment of the “best” of Olympus, the OM-D EM-5 is a new class of cameras on its own. Contrary to popular beliefs, the OM-D is not a continuation of the OM line (35mm SLR) which once rules the classic SLR world. The OM-D is a Micro Four Thirds, running alongside with the Pen Series, but targeting at a different crowd I would say. In my view, the Pen Series are great cameras targeting at the younger crowd who are trendy and artsy, but when OM-D was announced, I see it as a M43 for the serious enthusiasts. Why? The specs is so near to the Olympus Four Third Flagship E-5, its not too difficult to see it that the OM-D was made for bigger things.
When I received the review unit (pictured above) from Olympus Singapore, I was at a lost on how to review it. Given my style, I will not compare it with other maker’s M43 as each brand has its own following and selling points, but the OM-D is a different breed altogether. So after some careful consideration & planning, I decided to roped in another Professional Photographer to do a dual review, he is none other than Chester Chen, a renowned Professional Photographer in the local imaging circle – and he owns an OM-D too.

Picture: Blending into the crowd – Allan, Editor (Left) & Chester Chen (Right)
The planned review goes like this. We go out together, with our OM-Ds in our hands, to a single location and shoot using our own style – well that should be fun – especially with what we might produce as both of us are very different photographers. We ended up at Little India, most appropriately at this time of the year as Deepavali (The Festival of Lights) is around the corner. The theme? Street Photography.
Here’s what we got. (Commentaries after the photo spread)

Picture: “Gathered” by Allan Lee (Editor).
“Gathered” – Hordes of people gathered together having their little conversations & sharing of stories over
beer & snacks, this is a true gathering. Done with my own method of stitching for pano shots. – Allan Lee

Picture L-R: “Deepavali” & “HungryGoHere” by Chester Chen.
“Deepavali” (Above) & “Lightup” (2 jumps Below) – It quickly became dark and the celebratory decorations took to lighting up the street. – Chester
“HungryGoHere” – Some businesses who started working very early in the day were still at it whilst other more interested in the evening pub crawling patrons started to get customers and what better way than a real-life display of the dishes. – Chester

Picture L-R: “Coco-Licious” & “Color Order” by Allan Lee (Editor).
“Coco-Licious” – The coconut seems to be most popular drink at Little India’s Deepavali Bazaar. Every other
person taking a break by the road can be seen with 1 or sometimes 2 coconuts. This is enjoyed over a conversation
before moving off for more shopping. – Allan Lee.
“Color Order” – An Array of colored syrup drinks on sale adding to the atmospheric-ambience colors creating a happy &
refreshing mood. – Allan Lee.

Picture L-R: “Fence” , “GotNews-Paper” & “LeanOnMe” by Chester Chen.
“Fence” – I shot this twice but kept the one where I can see the fence. – Chester.
“LeanOnMe” – The subdued shadows from the indirect natural light caught my eye with this shot. And you can see the subtlety of the blues with the wall and his jeans. Then you get hit by the contrast of the red and white shirt. – Chester.

Picture L-R: “Ground Up” & “Drink Seller” by Allan Lee (Editor).
“Ground Up” – Using the tilt-able LCD screen on the OM-D, it allows me to do low-to-ground shots like these.
I love ground up perspectives. – Allan Lee.

Picture L-R: “Light-Up” & “Mosque & Moon” by Chester Chen.
“Mosque & Moon” – Multiple exposure shots was something I liked to try back in the day. Not many cameras incorporate this feature. The OM-D incorporated the feature and even though I love the feature but don’t feel it will give the desired results. – Chester.

Picture: “That Moment in Time” by Allan Lee (Editor).
“That Moment in Time” – Done with a tripod and having the lens zoomed to the telephoto end, I attempted this shot
with a slow shutter with the smallest aperture (F22) at 50mm (100mm). I am like some 20 metres away when I
took this shot. – Allan Lee

Picture L-R: “Toy People” & “Traffic” by Allan Lee (Editor).

Picture: “Rush” by Chester Chen.
“Rush” – it was like the sea opened up and allowed all to find safe passage. A very slow shutter speed was used but I had with me a mono-pod so the photo came out better than not having the monopod. – Chester.

Picture: “Pandora Window” by Allan Lee (Editor).

Picture: “Triple-Take” by Chester Chen.
“Triple-Take” – Look once and curiosity gets the better of you. Why or what made these 3 guys get the exact same shirt and similar trousers. Note this was shot with the Art Bracket feature. – Chester.

Picture: “Stop” by Allan Lee (Editor).

Picture: “Sitting” by Chester Chen.
“Sitting” – I like to shoot my panoramas in portrait mode. This allows me to capture surrounding elements like the buildings because in this shot it allows me to show the scale and mass of the people gathered. You can use the panorama assist mode on the OM-D but I choose to use my own method because it will have to be stitched later in software. – Chester.
Chester: “I have been using the Olympus OM-D E-M5 for some time and the itch that got me interested in micro-fourthirds even longer. In a nutshell, shooting with the electronic viewfinder with manual focus lenses is a godsend. Hence, when I packed my bag for this Olympus shootout inside was a Nikon 28mm f/3.5, Zenit Helios 44M-7 58mm f/2.0, the 14-42 kit and the 40-150mm. Seems like a lot but when compared to my other full-frame setup it is at least half the weight and bulk.”
Allan: “The Touch Screen Focus is very useful in this instance as it complements the already pretty fast focusing and this ensures that I am ready to take a shot the way I want it within fractions of a second. The compact profile of the OM-D also makes it easier for me to navigate through the crowd without breaking anything. The issue lens 12-50mm (24-100mm) is very useful for this shoot as it allows me to cover a good focal range – just that this lens needs a little getting-used to, otherwise, it’s a pretty decent lens to go with the OM-D. “
Conclusions:
Chester: “The small diminutive size of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 does make it difficult for people with large hands and fingers. The ‘Play’ button in particular is not friendly. Other inconveniences are quickly put aside when you see the quality of the images. My shooting requirements don’t usually call for large prints so I can easily make use of the high ISO up-to 3200.
If you get tired of being Mr Professional shooting raw files in manual mode. The Olympus OM-D E-M5 gives you both options of shooting where you have full control or it can just as easily setup for full auto or semi-auto for a newbie.
The features I like and use regularly.
Allan: “I must say I am impressed by what the OM-D had produced in this review-outing. The colors are natural and rendered correctly (Auto WB) and there is little effort required handling the little, but solidly built OM-D. Ergonomics are well thought of and buttons are easy to find and access. Probably for my fat fingers, I find some of the button a tad too tiny, but that should not pose a problem to anyone with normal fingers.
I like the tilt-able LCD screen a lot as I am one of those “low to ground” photographers that insists on having a foreground in my photos and this is a very useful feature. During the processing, I found that most of the photos are already nicely saturated (camera were set to Natural/Default for all settings) and all I need to do was to crop a bit and the photo is good to go.
On overall, the OM-D EM-5 is a nicely packaged monster. Everything is nicely sorted, the array of professional functions found in other high end cameras, the options of art filters, the magnesium alloy + weather proof body with touch screen LCD, the high frame per second, better ISO handling and very useable up to ISO 6400 (still clean), the break-neck speed of focusing and face detection, the attractive price and the lure of Zuiko lenses. Every professional photographer should have one OM-D EM-5 in their gear bag as a second camera or as a main camera.”

It all started out innocently as I wanted to find out how many of my peers uses Sigma lenses and their views on it. This is more of a consolidation exercise for information for this site ( for future uses and numbers can be very important.) As the Editor, I tested it out on my personal Facebook Wall. Here below is a screen shot of what I posted.
And when I saw the “LIKES” and Comments pouring in, I decided to test it further. Well reward systems works well in this country,
and I am ready to go all the way at this point and approach Sigma Marketing (Singapore) Pte Ltd for a lens if the below pulls off.
Then…………… my Faceboook Thread got shared over and over and comments flooded the status.
And what happened next is too easy to predict, somehow Sigma Marketing (Singapore) Pte Ltd
came to know about this little “Stunt” that is happening on my wall and they contacted me and told
me that they are keen to be “involved” in this. I made a little announcement here and this stunt went as
far as Australia, Canada, Malaysia & Indonesia as the hits begins to record visitations from these countries
leading to the article. The Site Traffic boomed to a record high of over 1250 hits in a mere 24 hours.
Today, a rep from Sigma Marketing (Singapore) Pte Ltd decided to select a “best comment” and a winner was selected.
This is like an impossible situation or mission at the start, but it ended up well as this
stunt had generated huge responses from existing Sigma users and even potential Sigma users.
It seems like Sigma has a great following after all. And I am glad to report that, my site had
many articles on Sigma Lenses & Cameras and that also adds up to a big traffic statistics being
generated.

L to R: Dr. Freddy Ng (President – Sigma Marketing (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Miss Tan Kim Peng (Prize Winner) & Mr. Allan Lee (Editor – SJS)
Lastly, I would like to Congratulate the Winner, Miss Tan Kim Peng (pictured above) for this Sigma Stunt by me, the crazy Editor for being
selected as the winner for a Brand New Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM lens Courtesy of Sigma Marketing (Singapore) Pte Ltd.
For those who did not win, fear not, who knows, I might be crazy enough to pull off another stunt in the near future?

Mad Photographer. Crazy Editor.
When Olympus launched the SZ-30MR, it took the world by surprise with its 24xZoom, being the first of its class in the world of high end digital compacts. But flaws were evident, like a low resolution LCD, bad ISO performance etc. The newly incarnation comes in the form of SZ-31MR. So does the replacement matches up to market standards?
The Editor caught up with one semi-professional photographer Wong Renhao recently and decided to pass the review unit from Olympus Singapore to him for a couple of days.

Photo by Wong Renhao using the SZ-31MR.
Editor: How was the Olympus SZ-31MR?
Wong: Excellent. Totally amazing!
Editor: Tell me more.
Wong: Well, first, the handling is pretty decent as the grip allows me to hold the camera firmly and prevent accidental falls and the layout of the buttons are sensible and easy to reach. I like the LCD screen too. It’s very bright and sharp.
Editor: What about the performance? Would you like to share?
Wong: As a DSLR user, I wouldn’t want to compare but looking at the SZ-31MR from a compact point of view, this little camera produces decent and clean photos. Especially when pushed to ISO1600. Personally I do not recommend pushing the ISO to 3200 though. The digital noise can be a little overbearing.

Photo by Wong Renhao using the SZ-31MR.
Editor: What about the focusing? Fast enough?
Wong: Definitely very fast for a compact!
Editor: Did you play with the video function too?
Wong: I did, but didn’t quite like it, this is personal though, I don’t really do video.
Editor: So what are the Key Pros & Cons of SZ-31MR from your experience?
Wong: Hmmm, let me start from the Pros then. First, I am (still) impressed with the super zoom of 24X, lens quality is excellent, the ability to shoot stills while recording a video and of course the ergonomics for handling. As for the Cons, I hope Olympus can improve on their ISO performance, and maybe use more metal in the next SZ instead of engineered plastic.
Editor: Did you use the Touch Screen function too?

Photo by Wong Renhao using the SZ-31MR.
Wong: I did, very useful especially when I needed a focus point and all I did was touch the area on the screen that I would like to focus and the camera just click. And the famed Super Macro Mode, that is very Olympus and still useful, in fact this is my most favorite function from Olympus compacts.
Editor: How will you use the SZ-31MR to complement your photography lifestyle?
Wong: The SZ-31MR will be excellent for me to carry around when I am not on assignments or when I doing leisure shooting at photography events. The light & compact profile is good for tucking away into my pocket and the super zoom serves a variety of shooting functions and this is simply a “no-brainer” compact that I would love to have it with me at most time. I also think that this will be a great cam for street photography.
Editor: Will you buy it? Recommend it to your photography peers?

Wong: Why not? It’s Olympus. J
Editor: Thank you Wong.

Travel in style on your next Photography trip!
Photography need not be boring although almost everything relating to your gear comes in black color.
I am departing for Thailand in 4 days for the 46th time and I have always travel to Thailand with different gears – every time.
This time, I rounded up a list of items that I am gearing up and might be of interest to you. Everything in Pink.
Camera: Pentax K-R Pink.

Pentax is famed for their bright and cheerful offerings for the K-2000/K-X/K-R range of DSLRs.
Light weight, compact and packed with semi-pro functions, all in a colorful shade of pink (and other colors),
This is the camera to bring to match your clothes and match the number 1 favourite color of the land of smiles.
Available on: www.ebay.com
Lens: Pentax DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6mm Kit Lens (Pink)

The matching colored Pentax kit lens that came with the body. At 18-55mm, it has the equivalent
focal range of 27mm to 82mm (in 35mm format.) which cover the essential wide angel for landscape & scenary to
the portrait range of 80mm best for street photography.
Available at: www.ebay.com
Flash: Holga 15B (Pink)

The Holga Flash is essentially a repainted Vivitar 150 Flash. Made for Film Rangefinders in the 1980s,
these units are obsolete as newer flash equipped with TTL functions replaces old manual ones. Holga
repainted these Vivitars to match the colorful range of Holga film toy cameras and well guys, it works
on DSLRs too. (Except Sony Alpha)
Available at: www.ebay.com.hk
Camera Bag: Golla ESTYLE (Pink)

With a Pink DSLR, Pink Lens & Pink Flash, a Pink Camera Bag completes the package.
The Golla ESTYLE comes in various colors and obviously I picked the pink one over here.
Featuring a 2 slot compartment, this bag is cool for 01 x camera with lens +01 lens + 01 flash.
Available at: www.sgcamerastore.com
A Lens Pouch: Keva Pink

This is actually a small camera bag for smaller compacts and digital cameras.
A quick peek inside reveals that this bag is suitable to double up as a lens pouch or an
accessories pouch to pair up the main camera bag. Since it’s pink, I pick it for both its
color & usefulness.
Available at: www.sgcamerastore.com
Batteries: Sanyo Eneloop (Baby Pink) & XXX Brand (Hot pink)
Now rechargeable batteries comes in various shades of pinks too.
Here we have a Sanyo Eneloop pack in Baby Pink and a “X” Brand in Hot Pink.
Always bring extra power especially during travel. Remember to pack your charger though.
Available at www.eneloop.com.sg (for sanyo)
Camera Strap: GOTO (Pink)

Goto produces tons of retro-style camera straps and accessories.
This leather strap is recently released in a mean hot pink. Well, it’s just perfect for
the pink camera & lens. Don’t you think so?
Available at www.ebay.com.hk
Camera Gear: Triopo Carbon Fibre Travel Tripo (Pink)

Travelling light is common sense. Having a tripod that is tough, light and attractive
is a hard combination, but Triopo has the answer. A full carbon fibre tripod that
is reversed-folded for a smaller profile, super light and it comes in various shades
of metallic colors! It can converted into a monopod, a walking stick, and a low to
ground tripod in seconds. It is obvious I’ve gotten the Pink version here!
Available at www.sgcamerastore.com
Outdoor Gear: Pink Disney Umbrella
Since Thailand is either raining or sunny, it helps to have mobile shelter in the form of an umbrella
inside your camera bag. Just to complete the Pink Mission, I picked the Disney “Minnie” version, in
pink of course.
Available at: www.amazon.com
Outdoor Gear: Iconic Wet Bag (Pink)

Acting as a spare bag for the extra shopping or simply a bag that carries all your wet gear, this is an
unfold-when-needed bag that is useful and practical. When not in use, it can be easily tucked away
without compromising space in your luggage. You can even tug this inside your camera bag too!
Available at: www.qoo10.sg (previously known as GMarket)
Outdoor Gear: KOR Aura Water Bottle (Pink)

Water may not be available everywhere, anywhere, especially during travel and transiting
from provinces to provinces. So it is sensible to have drinking water with you wherever
you go. Now drink in style, in pink.
Available at www.korwater.com
Outdoor Gear: OFF Insect Repellent (Pink Top)

Travelling to Thailand, one can expect to find as many mosquitoes as you can find Taxis.
Bring along insect repellent spray like OFF will be a smart move. Be it in the city or out
in the rural province, this is insurance against many insects and the dreaded dengue fever.
Available at: www.amazon.com (or your friendly MaMak Shop)
Outdoor Gear: Foldable Fan (Pink)

Camera bags are as great when you have a foldable fan in it. In the super hot & humid climate of
Thailand, a fan is very useful for instant gratification when You need a whiff of breeze, to cool off and
only possible when you have a foldable fan like this. I have it in Peranakan style, in Pink. 🙂
Available at: Jonker Street, Malacca, Malaysia.
Outdoor Gear: iPhone Cover (Pink)

A Metal iPhone Cover in metallic Pink brings protection to your dearest apple in a stylish
pink and yet tough enough to withstand knocks from hawkers & taxi drivers who tries to
elbow you into their taxis. Need say more?
Available at http://www.ebay.com.hk
Travel Gear: iPhone Charging & Date Cable (Pink)

OK, this is insane as it gets. A hot pink iphone charging charging cable, to match the rest of the pink gear
as above. Well, this is not just a pink decor, it works like the white version that charges your iPhones and
transfers datas, just that it is Pink.
Travel Gear: Pink Hard Case Luggage Bag (X Brand)

Get one that is hard, study, expandable and can allows you to place your tripod inside for
airport check-ins. This one that I gotten allows 2 stage expansion and the size is just right
for my travel tripod with lots of spaces for personal effects and belongings.
Available at: Boon Lay Shopping Centre or Mustafa.
So am I ready for my 46th visit to Thailand? I think I am. 🙂

The “SZ” in the Olympus’s SZ Series simply means “Super Zoom”. Living up to its claim, the SZ-14 boast a hefty zoom of 25-600mm (35mm Format equivalent). That is like having a modest wide angle lens through the focal range to a super tele-photo range in a super compact body, with built in Image Stabilization (IS) and packed with an array of filters (creative art filters) to allow creativity to be unleash even without the presence of a manual mode.
Too good to be true? Looking at the specifications sent to me by Olympus Singapore, it suggested a basic, no-frills travel camera. Well, to have a feel of how users from different categories will rate this camera, I rounded up a few photographers from different walks of life for a little “ground check” instead of me doing the review (again). I have been noted recently that I am very “pro-Olympus” these days ignoring releases from Nikon, Canon, Pentax & Sony. Well, to be really fair this time, I have to say, whenever a new camera is launched from Nikon, Canon, Pentax & Sony, even before I can get my hands on a review unit, many “reviews” would have been up and circulating – so there isn’t much need for me to write about these cameras/ lenses based on press releases – as I would rather do a run with them and post up my feedbacks. Wouldn’t you agree with me? 🙂
So back to Olympus, and the SZ-14, so what users from different segment of the market have to say about the SZ-14?
Sheladina Joseph – Travel Photographer.

Editor: So how do you find the Olympus SZ-14?
Sheladina: I find the grip on the SZ-14 to be extremely well-thought off. Most compacts of this range are flat bodied and runs the risk of losing the camera to an unexpected fall. The design is friendly to most travelers and the weight is a bonus. I also find the longer zoom range to be extra useful especially when doing street photography during my travel. To capture street scenes without having to use large DSLR bodies & long lenses – which can be intimidating in certain countries that I travels to. So it is at times like this, a compact like the SZ-14 will be very very useful.
Tan Yoke Ling (Yu Ling) – Professional Photographer.

Editor: So how do you find the Olympus SZ-14?
Yu Ling: I find the colours to be comparable to some DSLRs. Rich and constrasty and the high resolution LCD does makes viewing images satisfying too. The SZ-14 will be a good addition to fellow professionals’ camera bags. It can be used as a back up when “everything fails” too. In the photography business, anything can happen when one least expected it, having the little SZ-14 in my gear bag will add as “insurance”. When I am not on assignment, the SZ-14 can be my carry-around camera too – for leisure or snapshots. The creative filters are fun to use too. 🙂
Julia Chen – Photography Hobbyist & Enthusiast.

Editor: So how do you find the Olympus SZ-14?
Julia: This is a pretty basic camera. But it also promises lots of fun with its good focal range (25mm-600mm) and its creative offerings (Art Filters). This camera is light and compact and I can carry it with me anywhere I want, be it local or overseas. On days that I wish to give my DSLRs a break, the SZ-14 will be the perfect choice to bring it with me.
I like the “Super Macro” function a lot as it has the ability to get up (real) close to nature subjects will even shame some of the higher end prosumer compacts. And I love the sharpness of the photos from the SZ-14!
Hazel Q.M. – Photography Beginner.

Editor: So how do you find the Olympus SZ-14?
Hazel: I am very new to photography having picked up the interest about a year ago. I uses a DSLR and I have learn to rely on its advanced functions. The SZ-14 opens up yet another possibility for my learning curve as when I am not on “technical Mode”, I would want a camera that can allow me to concentrate on framing my photos and work on composition. The SZ-14’s “idiot-proof” package is perfect for such needs. And I would also like to add that the layout is simple and easy to find what I need, the creative filters that allows me more room for creative work as well as the compact and light package that I can carry it wherever I go and I can shoot whenever I want.
Key Features of Olympus SZ-14

Creativity & Flexibility
Other key features

– Compliant with Micro Four Thirds System Standard
– A 1X* Macro Lens with Excellent Imaging Performance and
– Dust and Splash proofing

Olympus Imaging Singapore is pleased to announce the upcoming release of the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f2.8 Macro, an interchangeable lens that conforms to the Micro Four Thirds System standard.
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f2.8 Macro is a single focal length macro lens equivalent to a 120mm lens for 35mm cameras. Featuring a closest focusing distance of 19 cm, excellent close-up capability with 1X* magnification, and dust and splash proof construction, this lens is ideal for macro shooting under a wide range of conditions, including in the rain or near the water, as well as being useful in other applications such as landscape and portrait shooting.
To ensure the best possible imaging quality, this lens incorporates 13 lens elements in 10 groups with extensive use of special glass materials such as ED (Extra-low Dispersion), HR (High Refractive index) and E-HR (Extra-High Refractive index) elements to completely eliminate the chromatic aberrations that can be noticeable with telephoto macro lenses. From the far view to the macro domain and from the image center to the periphery, this optical design achieves consistently clear, sharp, high-contrast imaging performance.
For fast, quiet autofocusing, the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f2.8 Macro incorporates Olympus’ exclusive MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism, which is based on a floating-type inner focusing system with three drive systems. With no change in the overall lens length during autofocusing, the camera can be held securely to remain stable throughout. Other features such as focus limit switching and a shooting distance/magnification indicator window enhance macro shooting control and precision.
Main Features:
1. Excellent imaging performance with high resolution and contrast, as well as high close-up shooting capability with 1X* magnification
2. MSC mechanism for fast, quiet autofocusing
3. Dust and splash proof construction for secure shooting under poor conditions, as well as enhanced control with focus limit switch and indicator window
Main Feature Details
1. Excellent imaging performance with high resolution and contrast, as well as close-up shooting capability with 1X* magnification
1-1. 1X* macro lens with high resolution and contrast
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f2.8 Macro is a single focal length, telephoto macro lens boasting excellent close-up shooting performance with a closest focusing distance of 19 cm and 1X* shooting magnification.
To ensure high imaging performance throughout the shooting range from the far view to life-size macro shooting, this lens incorporates a floating-type inner autofocusing system with three drive systems. To eliminate the chromatic aberrations typically noticeable with telephoto macro lenses, ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and HR (High Refractive index) elements are employed in the fixed groups, while HR and E-HR (Extra-High Refractive index) elements are employed in the focusing groups. This optical design makes it possible to achieve sharp imaging performance while maintaining high resolution and contrast from infinity to the closest focusing distance and from the image center to the peripheries.
1-2. Clear circular defocusing with little vignetting in the macro domain
To obtain true circular defocusing, it is necessary to use a circular aperture diaphragm and minimise vignetting. Vignetting is a phenomenon that sometimes occurs when the light is incident obliquely to the optical axis. As a result, defocusing in the image periphery becomes elliptical like a rugby ball, or polygonal rather than circular, depending on the extent to which the light rays in the image periphery are limited by the diameters of lens elements before and after the aperture.
This lens directs the light rays to the peripheral areas to minimise vignetting and obtain circular defocusing, particularly in the macro domain. The lens optics is designed to eliminate double-line defocusing, which results in the blurred area being contoured with dual lines or edges being coloured due to chromatic aberrations.
1-3. ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating
To thoroughly eliminate ghosts and flare which are normally very hard to prevent, the lens surfaces are treated with Olympus-original ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating which cuts the reflection of wavelengths between 450 and 650 nm in half. The result is clear image performance with a true-to-life sense of transparency and depth even under unfavorable conditions such as backlit shooting. The ZERO coating technology was derived from the thin film control technology Olympus developed for multi-layer film deposition technology in the field of microscopy. Another advantage of this advanced technology is resistance to scratching and degradation thanks to the high film strength made possible by vacuum deposition.
Thanks to the optimised layout of the lens groups behind the aperture and the effect of the ZERO coating, this lens also reduces spot flare (a phenomenon that tends to occur when shooting a scene with dark centre and bright periphery using a stopped-down aperture, in which flares shaped like aperture blades are imaged in the frame).
2. MSC mechanism for fast, quiet autofocusing
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f2.8 Macro incorporates the MSC (Movie and Still Compatible) mechanism, an advanced optical design technology developed for fast, quiet focusing using a small number of lightweight lens elements. Instead of using gears that produce operating noise, this mechanism drives the focusing lens directly using a metallic shaft and feed screw finished with precision in the sub-micrometric order.
The MSC mechanism is based on a floating type inner focusing system that adjusts focusing by optimised control of three drive systems. The result is fast, quiet and smooth autofocusing operation that ensures comfortable and stress-free shooting of both still photos and movies.
Moreover, because the overall length of the lens does not change during focusing, the camera can be held more securely, ensuring greater stability – something that is especially important in macro shooting.
3. Dust and splash proof construction for secure shooting even under poor conditions, as well as enhanced control using the focus limit switch and indicator window
3-1. Dust and splash proof construction
The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f2.8 Macro features the same dust and splash proof construction already proven on the SHG (Super High Grade) and HG (High Grade) OLYMPUS ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses. Thanks to an extensive use of ring-shaped seals in key locations throughout the lens, this design effectively prevents dust and splashes from penetrating the inside of the lens.
When combined with the OM-D E-M5 camera, which also features dust and splash proof construction, this lens lets the user concentrate on taking photographs or shooting movies without worrying about protecting the camera, even under unfavorable conditions such as rainy weather or by the water.
3-2. Focus limit switch
The focus limit switch sets the focusing range to enable faster focusing. Three modes, including close-up (focusing distance between 19 and 40 cm), normal (focusing distance from 19 cm to infinity) and far view (focusing distance from 40 cm to infinity) are available, as well as a 1:1 mode that shifts focusing to 1:1 with one-touch operation. The ability to simply set the mode according to the application makes it easy for users to shoot comfortably and quickly with various shooting styles and at various distances.
3-3. Shooting distance/magnification indicator window
A window to indicate shooting distance and magnification is provided on the lens body, significantly improving visibility and operability when shooting with a predetermined focusing distance and magnification, particularly when setting the distance for manual focusing.
3-4. Comfortable macro shooting with manual focusing
A working distance of 82 mm is secured for 1X shooting, enabling macro shooting with a natural feeling of distance from the subject. When the 1:1 mode is selected and the camera is moved back and forth, the closest focusing distance is determined instantaneously so the user need not be concerned and will not be confused over the subject distance.
With its smaller diameter, this lens makes it easier to enjoy handheld macro shooting and when combined with the OM-D E-M5 camera, it provides maximum stability thanks to a powerful 5-axis image stabilisation mechanism that can correct translational blur (shift blur) during macro shooting.
* Equivalent to 2X magnification of 35mm cameras
Other Features
Fixed barrel length thanks to the inner-focus design
Magnification preset at 1:1, 1:4 and 1:8
Small and light body weighing 185g
Beautiful bokeh at corners
No spot flares
Optional Accessories
The LH-49 is a sliding lens hood designed exclusively for the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f2.8 Macro. In addition to effective blocking of harmful light rays, this hood can be safely stored without detaching it from the lens. This not only eliminates the hassle of attaching and detaching the hood before/after every shooting session but also provides effective protection for the lens body. The hood also makes rotation of the polarisation filter easier.
The hood position can be adjusted during macro shooting by sliding it, making it possible to avoid capturing the shade of the hood in the image, as well as to adjust the amount of light on the subject.

The back-illuminated CMOS sensor was newly developed to take advantage of the bright f2.5 setting at the telephoto end of the lens. The 1/1.7 type sensor is larger than the sensors of most compact digital cameras, providing an advantage in image quality. At the same time, a larger size sensor would make it difficult to design a bright, high-performance lens. Hence, the current size is the best possible match.
The operability was also designed with care and precision. The world’s first hybrid control ring allows users to switch operating styles and functions to match their control preference. Users can assign function selection depending on their desired operating preferences. The “digital” operation provides a solid click on controls, whereas the “analogue” operation offers a smooth feeling on controls.
Basic operations and settings, starting with touch controls and Live Guide, as well as the refined UI are the same as those used on OLYMPUS PEN and OM-D E-M5 cameras.
In addition, as users can change the angle of the 3.0 type 920,000 dot rear monitor, keeping an eye on the subject from a low angle or high angle is a cinch.
Metal materials are used for the strong and sharp form of the top cover, plus the mode dial is cut from metal, giving the controls a solid feel.
For a sure grip, a removable grip is included as a standard feature. With an optimised control button layout, the STYLUS XZ-2 brings a comfortable feel to camera operations.
Main Features

Hybrid Control Ring
The hybrid control ring allows users to switch the control style and functions, as well as switching between the analogue and digital ring for the dial around the lens. When the lever next to the lens is placed downward, the ring around the lens switches to analogue control, allowing users to use it as a focus or zoom ring. If the lever is placed at an angle, the ring around the lens switches to digital control, allowing users to change exposure-related settings quickly and easily. This feature will allow users to fine-tune the focus in macro, select a composition when shooting, and set the exposure, all without taking their eyes off the subject.
Touch AF Shutter
The Touch AF Shutter function allows users to instantly select the subject they want to focus on simply by touching the screen. With the OLYMPUS OM-D E-M5 world’s fastest AF and an inductive electrostatic type touch screen, users can instantly select just the subject they want to focus on and activate the shutter, easily adjust Live Guide settings, select the AF location, enlarge images in playback, and browse images.
28mm-112mm Focal Length (conversion) f1.8-2.5 i.ZUIKO LENS
The lens on the STYLUS XZ-2 is a 4x optical zoom that covers a focal range from 28-112mm (35mm film equivalent). The maximum aperture of the lens at wide-angle is a bright f1.8, but the telephoto end also boasts a very bright f/2.5.
The lens fulfills the same quality standards as an SLR ZUIKO DIGITAL interchangeable lens with even, sharp depiction capability as well as reduced ghosting and lens flares in images.
The DSA (Dual Super Aspherical) lens boasts a high refractive index and powerful aberration cancellation capabilities in a single lens. Each HD (high refractive index, high dispersion) lens and each super HR (super high refractive index) lens contributes to a high refractive index, reduced number of lenses and shorter lens length. The EDA (Extra-low Dispersion Aspherical) lens prevents chromatic aberration at the telephoto end. This lens is a combination of Olympus’ superb lens technology and the spare-no-expense design process when it comes to using the same materials as on Olympus SLR lenses, resulting in an extremely bright and high image quality lens.
The “i” in i.ZUIKO stands for “eye” and “integrate”.
iHS Technology – iHS Technology is included from 2012 Spring and Summer models. iHS stands for “intelligence”, “high-speed”, and “high-sensitivity”.
With a 12.0 megapixel, back-illuminated CMOS sensor, and the TruePic VI image processing engine established with the OLYMPUS PEN, this camera achieves high-sensitivity, low noise, and a high-speed AF. Even in backlit, or nighttime scenes, the camera can beautifully capture images, just as they are seen by the human eye. With HDR backlit correction, the camera captures multiple images at different exposures and automatically merges them into a single image with a single shot. With Super Resolution technology, users can zoom up to 8x with minimal image degradation. As an added facet of Intelligence technology, iAUTO can automatically detect up to 30 different scenes.
Art Filter
By using the same imaging engine as the OLYMPUS PEN, the popular Art Filter is available on this model. With 11 Art Filters and 5 Art Effects, users can easily bring their artistic visions to life.
DUAL IS Image Stabilisation
DUAL IS is an image stabilisation that uses digital SLR algorithms and counteracts the direction of camera shake by moving the CMOS sensor via a shift-type image stabilisation mechanism. By using this function in combination with high-sensitivity shooting, camera shake and subject blur is effectively reduced, providing double image stabilisation.
Full High-Definition Movies (MOV/H.264)
With a 1920 x 1080 High-definition size and MOV/H.264 movie compression for excellent compatibility with computers, beautiful movies can be shot even longer. With a dedicated movie button, starting and stopping movies is easy with a single touch. The STYLUS XZ-2 is also equipped with Multi-Motion Movie IS image stabilisation. This function corrects for the common gradual camera shake that occurs when shooting on the move, allowing users to enjoy more stable and higher quality movies.
Smartphone Application: OLYMPUS Image Share
With the iPhone and Android compatible smartphone application OLYMPUS Image Share (to be released on September 2012, and the Toshiba FlashAir SDHC card with an internal wireless LAN, uploading images to social networking services is easier than ever before. Using the smartphone connection function included on the STYLUS XZ-2 to set up a FlashAir card makes Wi-Fi connection simple. With the OLYMPUS Image Share application, users can easily load images onto a smartphone via a thumbnail index, add Art Filters on a smartphone, and share images on various social networking services.
A one-time password can also be issued for connecting to multiple smartphones simultaneously to share images with friends and family.
SNS Upload Function
This function satisfies the demand of users who want to upload still images to social networking sites, such as Facebook and Flickr.
By adding images for sharing to an upload list on the camera, they can easily be uploaded to the desired social networking service.
To upload images, users simply add recorded images to a list on the camera, and then upload them to a computer. Images added to a list can be searched with a single touch and then easily uploaded. (It is necessary to preinstall the included software, OLYMPUS Viewer2, on a computer.)
Eye-Fi Support
Eye-Fi cards are SDHC memory cards that contain an internal wireless LAN. Images can be wirelessly uploaded to picture services such as [ib on the net], online photo albums, and computers.

OLYMPUS PEN Lite E-PL5 Micro Four Thirds System Camera

Olympus Imaging Singapore is pleased to introduce a new PEN Lite series camera that conforms to the Micro Four Thirds System standard – the OLYMPUS PEN Lite E-PL5, designed for users who take pleasure in active photography.
Main Features:
The mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera market pioneered by Olympus with the PEN series is fast expanding in Japan and Asia where mirrorless cameras now account for 50% of the interchangeable lens camera market, as well as in Europe and the United States of America.*1
Following up on the success of the OLYMPUS PEN Lite E-PL3, which was praised by critics for its combination of high functionality and ease of use in a stylish, ultra-compact body, Olympus has refined and improved on its formula with the new OLYMPUS PEN Lite E-PL5.
Like its predecessor E-PL3, the E-PL5 is designed for people who want to enjoy the pleasures of high-end photography without crimping their lifestyle. At the same time, the E-PL5 boasts some pretty significant improvements in image quality, functionality and ease of use.
The E-PL5 takes its imaging cues from Olympus’ top-of-the-line flagship model, the OLYMPUS OM-D E-M5, by incorporating the same 16.05-megapixel Live MOS Sensor and TruePic VI image processing engine that have made the image quality and sensitivity of the OM-D E-M5 the unmatched standard for Micro Four Thirds system cameras. For style and design, the E-PL5 looks to the OLYMPUS PEN E-P3 for its convenient, stylish, and very functional detachable grip. Finally, from the E-PL3, it inherits the swiveling monitor that enables monitoring during self-portrait shooting with a greatly expanded swiveling range. In the E-PL5, Olympus has brought together the best from its entire lineup, refined and improved them, and combined them all in a compact, lightweight body.
Exciting new features include the Touch AF Shutter function, which lets the user take a picture simply by touching the Live View screen. In combination with the FAST AF system that made the OM-D E-M5 the world’s fastest autofocusing camera*2, digital photographers can now capture precisely the image they want at precisely the moment they want it. With instantaneous focusing and a capacitive touchscreen panel that reacts immediately to the lightest touch, the camera will not shake at the moment the shutter is released, assuring maximum clarity and stability. Incredibly effective with moving subjects, the Touch AF Shutter will make new ways of shooting possible, taking the creative power and excitement of photography to a whole new level.
The Art Filters that have been one of the most defining characteristics of Olympus system cameras have also improved. Offering a total of twelve filter effects, including the new Water Colour plus supporting functions like Variations, Art Effects and the new Monochrome effect, the E-PL5 gives users the opportunity to express their own unique perspective, bringing their vision to life with brilliant, easy-to-use effects.
Much more than just an incremental upgrade, the E-PL5 truly fulfills the PEN concept of functional beauty, evolving the system to a new level of maturity with comprehensive advances in all elements, including image quality, functionality and operability. With the E-PL5, Olympus has created a Micro Four Thirds system camera that consolidates the digital photography revolution, setting a new standard for a new age.
With the introduction of the E-PL5, Olympus has made it clear that the Micro Four Thirds system is here to stay. And, of course, Olympus remains committed to advancing the evolution of the system in the future with to create and expand into new markets.
Other Features:
The CS-38B is a genuine leather body jacket designed exclusively for the OLYMPUS PEN Lite E-PL5. It protects the sensitive parts of the camera body without detracting from its design. In addition to the practical aspect of camera body protection, the body jacket’s genuine leather and rugged construction combine casual, contemporary styling with the rugged elegance of traditional craftsmanship. That stylish appearance is enhanced by a choice of four colours for easy coordination with the CSS-S109LLII Leather Shoulder Strap,
A recessed mounting screw ensures that the bottom of the jacket is flat, providing maximum stability when the camera is set down and enhancing its sleek looks. A tripod can be attached without removing the jacket, and, of course, shooting and playback is possible while viewing the rear-panel LCD without taking the camera out of the body jacket.

The OLYMPUS PEN Lite E-PL5 employs the same interchangeable grip design first made popular by the OLYMPUS PEN E-P3. Available in three patterns, the MCG-3PR Camera Grip makes it easy to accessorise with style. The matching LC-37PR Lens Cap, available in the same three patterns, lets the user create a colour-coordinated combination that enhances the system’s sense of integration.
The Dot, Hounds tooth Check, and Stripe patterns are inspired by popular and traditional fabrics that are always in style. Wrapping the entire camera with a unique, integrated image, they allow the user to enjoy the satisfaction and pride of ownership that customisation entails. The camera grip can also be used with the PEN E-P3.
1.1 The BCL-1580 is a lens that is so thin – just 9mm thick – that it can easily be mistaken for a camera-mount body cap. With three glass lens elements in three groups, it can be used as a wide-angle lens equivalent with a single focal length of 30mm (35mm camera equivalent). In addition to daily use as a “pan-focus” lens featuring a wide angle, fixed f8 aperture and shallow depth of field, it is compatible with manual focusing using a lever and capable of close-up shooting as close as 30 cm.
1.2 A lens-protection barrier is provided so the lens can be mounted permanently on the camera and even put in a pocket together with the camera. Serving as a body cap when carrying the camera and as a pan-focus snapshot lens when taking pictures, this lens is the ideal choice for everyday shooting.
The PT-EP10 is a genuine underwater case designed exclusively for use with the OLYMPUS PEN Lite E-PL5, making it possible to create a reliable underwater photography system*3 capable of withstanding depths up to 45 metres.
Included with the PT-EP10 underwater case is a large diffuser that allows it to be used in combination with the removable flash (provided with the camera body). The provided flash features wireless flash control capability so the UFL-2 Underwater Flash can be fired from the camera.
The lens port integrated with the case can accept the PTWC-01 Underwater Wide Conversion Lens or PTMC-01 Underwater Macro Conversion Lens for easy wide-angle or macro underwater shooting.
To enable easy shooting of underwater pictures with vivid colors, the underwater white balance control function incorporated in the OLYMPUS PEN Lite E-PL5 detects and corrects underwater colour tones that can vary depending on factors such as water depth, weather and seawater condition. Underwater images with almost no blue colour cast can be captured even when shooting movies.
*Lenses compatible with this underwater case include the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 II, M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 IIR, M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f2.8 Macro, M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 45mm f1.8 and M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 75mm f1.8
The PPZR-EP03 Focus Gear is designed for use with the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f2.8 Macro lens. When attached to the lens, this gear enables manual focusing during underwater shooting. In addition to the PT-EP10, the PPZR-EP03 Focus Gear can also be used with other Underwater Cases: the PT-EP01 (for OLYMPUS PEN Lite E-PL1) and PT-E08 (for OLYMPUS OM-D E-M5).
