And I love the beauty of the city especially during twilights.

Ed: Oh wow! So, when you are contributing to Flickr, is there an objective that you were trying to achieve?
How: (Laughs) Believe it or not, I was using Flickr to the like of an online storage & doubling as a back up for my photos (objective). However, I discovered the joy of sharing my works with other photographers too through Flickr.

Picture: Fishing in Sri Lanka by Ng Hock How.

Ed: So, has Flickr met your needs & objective as an online photo sharing portal?
How: Definitely a 100% Yes from me.

Ed: Right. So what advice will you give to other budding photographers?
How: Keep shooting, shoot more, learn from mistakes and always look at other photographers’ work and use that as a benchmark for personal improvement.

Ed: Sound advice indeed! So will you continue to support Flickr? Will you recommend Flickr to your friends too?
How: Yes, Flickr is the most popular photo sharing site. Everyone should be introduced to Flickr.

Ed: Is there anything you would like to mention about Flickr?
How: The interface on the site can be better improved for easier access and the displayed photo seems to have a reduced quality when compared to the uploaded version.

Ed: I will feedback that to the guys at Getty Images.
Is there any famous last words for my readers?
How: Enjoy Shooting & Sharing!@

Ed: Thank you Hock How!

Total Production of NIKKOR Lenses for Nikon SLR Cameras Reaches Sixty-Five Million

October , 2011, TOKYO– Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce that total production of NIKKOR interchangeable lenses for Nikon SLR cameras reached sixty-five million at the beginning of October 2011.

In 1959, Nikon (then Nippon Kogaku K.K.) released its first SLR camera, the Nikon F. At the same time, Nikon also released its first NIKKOR interchangeable lenses for Nikon SLR cameras, among them the Nikkor-S Auto 5cm f/2. In the half century since, NIKKOR lenses have become the favorite lenses of a wide variety of users, and have been extremely well received by a great number of photo enthusiasts and professional photographers.

In March 2011, total production of NIKKOR lenses reached sixty million. Since then, Nikon has continued to expand the product lineup by releasing two new NIKKOR lenses for FX- and DX-format SLR cameras. The fact that NIKKOR continues to satisfy a wide variety of photographers is evidenced by production of an additional five million lenses in just half a year, bringing total production to sixty-five million.

NIKKOR lenses released since March 2011

AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G (released June 2011)
A fast, standard fixed focal length (prime) lens that produces bright images and offers beautiful blur characteristics and superior rendering performance with a focal length of 50 mm and fast maximum aperture of f/1.8. This lens is compatible with the FX format.

AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G (released August 2011)
A standard Micro-NIKKOR lens with a focal length of 40 mm and a maximum aperture of f/2.8. This lens enables extremely close-up shooting with a minimum focus distance of just 0.163 m and offers beautiful blur characteristics. It also offers a unique style when shooting portraits, landscapes and more. This lens is compatible with the DX format.

Announced worldwide on September 21, the Nikon 1 J1 and the Nikon 1 V1 are the first and second cameras in the Nikon 1, Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lenses, that utilize the new Nikon 1 lens mount system. The F-Mount NIKKOR lenses, with over half a century of history, can also be attached to the Nikon 1 J1 and the Nikon 1 V1 using the dedicated Mount Adapter FT1*. This enables users to enjoy tremendous variety in their imaging expression with the ability to select a lens best suited to the scene, subject, or their own creative intent from a broad lineup of standard and special-purpose NIKKOR lenses. Nikon will continue to expand its lineup of NIKKOR lenses utilizing optical technologies accumulated over its long history to offer increased convenience to users of Nikon cameras.

*Autofocus may not perform as expected in some situations or with some lenses. Restrictions apply to mounting and functionality with some lenses.

The NIKKOR brand

As the brand name for Nikon lenses, NIKKOR has become synonymous with high-performance, high-quality SLR lenses. The NIKKOR name comes from adding “R”—a common practice in the naming of photographic lenses at the time the name was established—to “Nikko”, the Romanized abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku K.K. In 1933, the large-format lens for aerial photography was released with the name Aero-Nikkor.

NIKKOR has always been ahead of the times. The OP Fisheye-Nikkor 10mm f/5.6 fisheye lens for SLR cameras, released in 1968, was the world’s first lens to incorporate aspherical lens elements. What’s more, NIKKOR lenses for the latest SLR cameras utilize a number of Nikon’s own cutting-edge technologies, including Nano Crystal Coat, which virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths.
The current lineup of more than sixty NIKKOR lenses for Nikon SLR cameras offers a rich variety of lenses, including fisheye lenses, super wide-angle to super telephoto lenses, micro lenses and PC-E lenses.

Canon celebrates production of 50 million EOS SLR cameras, 70 million EF interchangeable lenses

TOKYO, October 18, 2011—Canon Inc. and Canon Marketing Japan Inc. announced today the achievement of two major manufacturing milestones: combined production of film and digital EOS-series single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras surpassed the 50-million mark in September this year, and the EF series of interchangeable lenses is expected to reach the 70-million-unit milestone later this month.

50 million EOS digital SLR cameras

Production of Canon EOS SLR cameras first started in 1987 at Canon Inc.’s Fukushima Plant (now Fukushima Canon Inc.), and later moved to Oita Canon Inc. and Canon Inc., Taiwan; and most recently Nagasaki Canon Inc. in 2010. In 1997, the EOS series celebrated its 10-year anniversary in addition to the 10-millionth unit produced, and in 2003 passed the 20-million mark. Following the rapid spread of digital SLR cameras, Canon went on to reach 30-million units produced during the series’ 20-year anniversary in 2007, followed by the 40-million mark in May 2010. After a short one year and four months, the EOS series has now come to celebrate its 50-millionth camera produced.

The EOS series, which stands for “Electro Optical System” and also carries the name of the Greek goddess of the dawn, was first introduced in March 1987 as a new generation of AF SLR cameras that incorporate the world’s first electronic mount system, achieving complete electronic control not only between the lens and body but throughout the entire camera system.

With the key concepts of high speed and ease of use, EOS-series cameras, including the top-of-the-line EOS-1 professional model released in 1989 and the popular compact, lightweight EOS Kiss (EOS Rebel XS or EOS 500 in other regions) introduced in 1993, actively incorporate innovative technologies and have gained acceptance from a wide range of users. Following the introduction of the EOS D30 in 2000, when the spread of digital SLR cameras was in full swing, Canon developed such advanced technologies as its proprietary CMOS sensors and high-performance DIGIC digital image processors, as well as an extensive lineup of EF lenses in an effort to fulfill the company’s new key concepts of high speed, ease-of-use, and high image quality.

Currently, the company offers a broad product lineup that serves the needs of all levels of users, from entry-level enthusiasts to advanced amateurs and professionals. This lineup has further expanded with the addition of the new high-performance EOS-1D X, Canon’s new flagship digital SLR camera, scheduled to go on sale in late March 2012.

70 million EF lenses

Production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) film cameras first began in 1987 at the company’s Utsunomiya Plant, and has since expanded to a total of four manufacturing centers, including Canon Inc., Taiwan; Canon Opto (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.; and Oita Canon Inc. in southern Japan. Production of EF lenses surpassed the 10-million mark in 1995, doubling to 20-million units in 2001. After reaching the 30-million-unit milestone in 2006, Canon celebrated the production of its 40-millionth lens in April 2008. Owing to the rapid spread of the EOS Digital series of digital SLR cameras, production for Canon’s EF lenses then gained momentum to reach the 50-million-unit milestone in 2009, followed by the 60-million mark in January this year. And just nine months later, the EF series is expected to reach the 70-million mark in late October.

Canon’s EF lens series was first introduced together with the EOS SLR camera system in March 1987, and has over the years led the industry through the incorporation of a number of innovative technologies, including such world’s firsts*1 as the Ultrasonic Motor (USM) for use in lenses, Image Stabilizer (IS), Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) anti-reflection technology, and a multi-layered diffractive optical (DO) element.

Canon’s current EF-lens lineup, comprising 66 models,*2 ranges from super-wide-angle lenses to super-telephoto zoom lenses. The diverse lens selection includes an array of zoom lenses, Image Stabilizer-equipped lenses, large-diameter lenses, macro-lenses and TS-E lenses incorporating a special tilt-shift mechanism allowing manipulation of image perspective and distortion. This year, Canon released such EF lenses as the EF8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM—the world’s first*1 full fisheye zoom lens with angle-of-view coverage from 180-degree circular fisheye to 180-degree diagonal fisheye—and the EF300mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF400mm f/2.8L IS II USM telephoto lenses.

Canon will continue to refine its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technologies, striving to produce exceptional and reliable lenses and cameras that cater to the varying needs of photographers—from first-time users to advanced amateurs and professionals—while contributing to expanding the culture of photographic and video imaging.

The Tracking Focus feature lets users select a target object on screen and focus on it accurately, even if it is moving.

Additionally, manual focus is now possible during video shooting. Enthusiasts can also enjoy full control over creating the perfect video image with Program, Aperture/Shutter Priority and all-Manual modes (P/A/S/M) – just like the most advanced DSLR cameras. Stereo audio quality is improved, with revised circuitry that lowers noise levels, especially when shooting quiet scenes.

First introduced on the NEX-C3, Picture Effects enables easy “in camera” production of sophisticated artistic effects without the need for a PC or post-processing. The camera features 11 modes and 15 effects, including new HDR Painting, Soft Focus, Miniature and Rich-Tone Mono. A generous palette of other artistic imaging functions includes 3D Sweep Panorama™ mode, Soft Skin, Auto HDR, Handheld Twilight and Anti Motion Blur Modes.

The NEX-7 camera includes an integrated flash system and also features an Auto-lock Accessory Shoe for advanced shooting applications, both of which are firsts for Sony’s E-mount line of cameras. The shoe supports the full range of Alpha flashes and monitors, as well as adaptors to accommodate studio lighting.

The LCS-ELC7 soft carrying case combines a snug-fitting body case and leather lens jacket to help protect the body and lens from scratches and dust. It’s complemented by the STP-XH70 shoulder strap, made of the same material.

The new NEX-7 is compatible with Sony’s Memory Stick PRO-HG™ DUO HX series as well as Sony’s full line of SD memory cards.  Available in capacities up to 32 GB, both media enable necessary transfer speeds for stable and optimal performance of Sony’s hardware features, such as full HD movie shooting.

SONY’S LATEST a DSLR CAMERAS BRING NEW LEVELS OF SPEED, PERFORMANCE AND CREATIVITY TO PHOTO ENTHUSIASTS

α77 and α65 Models Expand Translucent Mirror Technology Line; Deliver 24.3 megapixels with up to 12- and 10- fps AF-enabled continuous shooting

Photo: Sony Alpha A65SAN DIEGO, Aug. 24, 2011 – Blazing speed, enhanced image quality, high resolution and incredible performance are just some of the features advanced amateurs and photo enthusiasts will find in Sony’s newest alpha cameras, models SLT-A77 (α77) and SLT-A65 (α65).Sony’s latest refinements to its Translucent Mirror Technology make these new cameras the fastest, most responsive interchangeable lens cameras in their class, as well as set new performance benchmarks that even professional DSLRs have yet to achieve.  The α77 and α65 both feature a newly developed Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor with 24.3 effective megapixel resolution, as well as the world’s first XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ viewfinder. The sensor teams with the next generation of Sony’s BIONZ® image processing engine to handle huge amounts of high speed data from the camera sensor, enabling unprecedented response times and flawless image quality with ultra-low noise when shooting still images or Full HD video.
Photo: Sony Alpha A65 (Back Panel)

“We feel that these cameras are not only a significant evolution of our breakthrough Translucent Mirror Technology,” said Mike Kahn, director of the alpha camera business group for Sony Electronics. “They’re also a revolution in terms of redefining how this unique technology can be put to use by enthusiasts.”

The much anticipated successor to Sony’s acclaimed α700 DSLR, the α77 boasts the world’s fastest continuous autofocus (AF) shooting performance (among DSLRs in Aug 2011), capturing a burst of full resolution, 24 megapixel images at 12 frames per second with full-time phase-detection AF. The α65 achieves a similarly impressive 10fps shooting speed.

Photo: Sony Alpha A77

Precision AF tracking of moving subjects is more precise with the α77 due to a new 19-point autofocus system with 11 cross sensors. The α65 boasts 15-point AF with three cross sensors. Tracking Focus maintains accurate focus lock on a moving subject – even if the target is momentarily obscured.  Additionally, a new electronic front shutter curtain achieves a minimum release time lag of approximately 50 milliseconds, comparable to much more expensive professional-class DSLRs.
The α77 and α65 further refine Sony’s acclaimed Fast Continuous AF Full HD Movie shooting, already featured on previous Sony Translucent Mirror cameras. Phase Detection maintains accurate focus during video shooting of portrait subjects, even when they’re moving at fast speeds.
Unprecedented image quality and creative options

A broad sensitivity range of ISO 100-16000 expands (α77 only) down to ISO 50. At the highest sensitivities, both cameras can freeze fast action or capture atmospheric low-noise shots without flash. Low ISO settings are ideal when used with a long exposure to create expressive shots, such as splashing water.
Both cameras showcase a remarkably crisp OLED Tru-Finder™ viewfinder, the world’s first of its kind. With a 2359k dot (XGA) resolution, this precision electronic viewfinder offers a bright, highly detailed, high contrast image with 100 percent frame coverage and a wide field of view comparable to the most advanced class optical viewfinders.

However, unlike optical viewfinders, users have expansive customization capabilities through the XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ viewfinder and can preview the effects of adjusting exposure, white balance and other settings in real-time. Photographers can also make fine focus adjustments via a zoomed-in portion of the image.
The Smart Teleconverter displays an enlarged central portion of the image sensor, allowing compositions to be displayed clearly on the OLED viewfinder and captured as 12 megapixel images with a digital zoom factor of 1.4x or 2x.

In another first for DSLR cameras, both new models can capture Full HD video at 60p (progressive) frame rates – incorporating the recently introduced AVCHD™ Progressive (Ver. 2.0) format.  Also, 24p shooting is available for capturing beautiful cinematic video footage.  Manual focusing and P/A/S/M exposure modes, familiar to creative filmmakers, also can provide enhanced control during video shooting.
Shooters can compose and review stills and video on the adjustable-angle three-inch Xtra Fine LCD™ display that offers high resolution (921k dot) and TruBlack™ technology for superb detail and contrast. As an extra refinement, the α77 introduces the world’s first three-way adjustable screen that tilts and pivots freely for effortless framing at any angle (α65: two-way adjust LCD).

Revised ergonomics on both cameras include a comfortably contoured new grip design and tactile new button layout for ‘eyes off’ operation while viewing via the high-resolution XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ viewfinder.
The α77 adds front and rear control dials for intuitive fingertip operation and a separate top-mounted LCD data display. The durable body features magnesium alloy panels for strength and lightness. Key controls are sealed against the effects of dust and moisture, complementing similar levels of protection offered by the new SAL1650 lens, VG-C77AM Vertical Grip for α77 and HVL-F43AM flash unit.
A new shutter unit on the α77 is tested up to 150,000 cycles and supports an ultra-fast minimum 1/8000 sec shutter speed (1/250 sec flash sync). On-board GPS allows automatic geo-tagging of photos and video clips with location data.
New DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM zoom lens and accessories

The growing range of compatible A-mount lenses for both cameras now includes the quiet, bright DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM standard zoom with 16mm wide angle coverage that’s ideal for both portrait and everyday shooting.
The high-performance lens features a dust- and moisture-resistant design, and offers a zoom range of approximately 3x range at constant wide F2.8 aperture. Optical performance is assured by aspherical glass and three ED (Extra Low Dispersion) lens elements to minimize aberration at all focal lengths. An internal Super Sonic wave Motor (SSM) drive enables fast, quiet autofocus.

An optional dust- and moisture-resistant VG-C77AM Vertical Grip for α77 assures comfortable handling in vertical shooting positions. It can house up to two NP-FM500H InfoLITHIUM® batteries, doubling shooting stamina up to approximately 1060 shots (via LCD monitor)/940 shots (via Tru-Finder™ viewfinder) when using Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media. Other new A-mount system accessories include a back pack (LCS-BP2), soft carrying cases (LCS-SC21 and LCS-SC8), LCD protectors and eyepiece cups.
The new α77 is compatible with Sony’s Memory Stick PRO-HG™ DUO HX series as well as Sony’s full line of SD memory cards.  Available in capacities up to 32 GB, both media enable necessary transfer speeds for stable and optimal performance of Sony’s hardware features, such as full HD movie shooting.

Pricing and Availability

The new α77 Translucent Mirror interchangeable lens camera will be available in a kit with the new SAL1650 f2.8 lens for about $2000, and offered as body-only for about $1400.  The SAL1650 lens will also be sold separately for about $700.
The new VG-C77AM vertical grip, designed for the α77 camera, will be available in October for about $300.
The new α65 Translucent Mirror interchangeable lens camera will be available in a kit with a standard 18-55mm lens (SAL1855) for about $1000, and offered as body-only for about $900.

Both the α77 and α65 cameras kits and the new SAL1650 lens will be available this October at Sony retail stores (www.store.sony.com) as well as other authorized retailers throughout the Sony dealer network.

HOYA Announce PRO1 Digital ND32 and ND64 Neutral Density Filters

THK Photo Product, Inc announces the new HOYA PRO1 Digital ND 32 and ND64 Neutral Density filter2.

The ND32 is a dark neutral density filter with a filter factor of 32, meaning there is 5-stop light loss. This is a great filter for slowing down shutter speeds to capture motion. An example: In daylight, maybe the slowest shutter speed possible without a filter could be 1/60 sec at F/22 By adding the HOYA PRO1 ND 32, a shutter speed of 1/2 sec would be possible.

The ND64 is a dark neutral density filter with a filter factor of 64, meaning there is 6-stop light loss. This is a great filter for slowing down shutter speeds to capture motion. An example: In daylight, maybe the slowest shutter speed possible without a filter could be 1/60 sec at F/22 By adding the HOYA PRO1 ND64, a shutter speed of 1 full second would be possible.

Another use of the ND32 and ND64 would be controlling depth of field. With these strong ND filters, a much wider aperture can be used. Wide apertures like F/1.4 and F1.8 create a very shallow depth of field and have the effect of isolating the subject from the background. Creative possibilities are endless with this type of filter.

The HOYA PRO1 Digital ND16 has all the features of the PRO1 Digital series such as DMC multi-coating to reduce reflections and a low profile filter frames for use un ultra-wide angle lenses.

Time’s Up for Nikon D3S, Move Aside for Canon EOS 1DX

Canon integrates 1D and 1Ds series to launch the EOS-1D X
– World’s fastest full-frame DSLR with new Dual DIGIC 5+ processor aims to conquer the professional market.

Singapore, 18 October, 2011 – Canon today announces the launch of the new EOS-1D X, the ultimate professional Digital SLR (DSLR) camera designed to support any photographic application and all shooting demands.

Technological evolution in the EOS-1D X takes a giant leap forward from the EOS-1Ds Mark III and EOS-1D Mark IV.  Marrying and improving on the class-leading features of its twin sources of inspiration, the EOS-1D X sports a full-frame 35mm 18.1-megapixel CMOS sensor with a shooting speed of up to 14 frames per second (fps), powered by the brand new Dual DIGIC 5+ image processor.

Developed based on careful research on the needs of professional photographers around the world, the EOS-1D X expands the realm of photographic possibilities by bringing high image quality and high continuous shooting speeds together, two crucial points of photography traditionally kept separate.

“For the longest time, professional photographers worked with two differently built cameras that emphasize individually on shooting speed or image quality,” said Andrew Koh, Senior Director and General Manager, Consumer Imaging and Information Group, CanonSingapore. “It has long been an ideal to have both speed and quality in a single form, and today Canon is proud to announce that with the launch of the EOS-1D X, we have finally realized this vision.”

Stunning Image Quality

The EOS-1D X’s new 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor has approximately 18.1 effective megapixels featuring a superior signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and a larger pixel size of 6.95μm square pixels, as compared to the EOS-1D Mark IV’s 5.7μm square pixels. The larger pixel and sensor size enhance light gathering efficiency and faithfully capture the mood of the original scene with minimal noise.

Seventeen times faster than the DIGIC 4 processor used in the current EOS series, the all-new Dual DIGIC 5+ processor in the EOS-1D X boasts ultra high speed processing to produce unprecedented image quality even at high ISO settings and shooting speeds.

Representing a two-stop improvement in noise reduction, images shot at ISO 51,200 using the EOS-1D X are comparable to ISO 12,800 images shot with the EOS-1D Mark IV. Standard ISO settings have increased by 2 stops, up to ISO 51,200, compared to ISO 12,800 with the EOS-1D Mark IV. This can be further expanded up to ISO 204,800. With such a wide range of ISO settings, professionals can now eliminate motion blur in almost any kind of situations and yet achieve ultra low noise quality.

Other improvements in the EOS

-1D X’s imaging capabilities include real-time chromatic aberration correction, in-camera RAW processing, lens distortion correction (using in-camera RAW processing) and multiple exposures.

Unprecedented High-speed Performance

The EOS-1D X offers instant response to match sports photographers’ reflexes with the minimum shutter-release lag reduced to 36 milliseconds (from 40 milliseconds in the EOS-1D Mark IV).

In the One-Shot AF and AI Servo AF modes, a maximum continuous shooting speed of 12fps is attainable with ISO speeds of 25,600 and below. Photographers also have the option to activate the super high-speed continuous shooting mode of 14fps.

The EOS-1D X also uses a new mirror mechanism, the Quad Active Mirror Stopper. Equipped with separate bounce lock mechanisms and double balancers, the mechanism reduces mirror bounce instantly, and enables a stable yet precise high-speed drive to ensure photographers will never miss any high-speed action.

Innovative AE/AF System

The EOS-1D X features a next-generation Auto Focus (AF) system, sporting a 61 point high-density reticular AF (41 cross-type points) that offers wide, auto focus coverage at high precision as well as enhanced subject tracking capability.

The EOS-1D Mark IV utilizes 39 f/2.8-sensitive cross-type sensors, which are only maximized to help the user achieve faster AF when lenses have an aperture of f/2.8 or brighter. This feature is enhanced in the EOS-1D X by utilizing 41 f/4.0-sensitive cross-type sensors. Professionals can now use f/4.0 lenses to achieve the same AF speed compared to an f/2.8 lens on the EOS-1D Mark IV.

This is also applicable even with an f/2.8 lens attached to a 1.4X extender (making an effective aperture value of f/4.0) – these 41 cross-type sensors will be usable as well. For f/2.8 lenses, there are 5 dual cross-type sensors in the centre that allow ultra high precision AF, exceeding previous EOS-1D series models. 21 cross-type sensors in the middle are f/5.6-sensitive, giving the EOS-1D X dramatically expanded focusing accuracy to support a larger range of f/4.0 and f/5.6 lenses.

At the heart of the new AF unit is the new EOS iSA (Intelligent Subject Analysis) System that employs a 100,000-pixel RGB Metering Sensor and AE-dedicated DIGIC 4 image processor. This innovation recognizes a subject’s color and face, in addition to movement, to make Intelligent Tracking and Recognition (iTR) possible, offering reliable and continuous tracking of the subject. These two technologies work in tandem to deliver better focusing capability in lower light.

Advanced EOS Movie

Already highly regarded for its high-quality images, low noise and cinematic look, EOS Movie technology takes another leap forward in the EOS-1D X. With the new Dual DIGIC 5+ processor, color artifacts and moiré that appear in scenes (with fine horizontal lines) are drastically reduced, producing industry-grade images with low noise, even at high ISO speeds.

New EOS Movie features in the EOS-1D X include SMTPE-compliant time code embedding, manually adjustable audio recording level settings and recording in P, Av, Tv and Manual modes. Immediate recording is also possible through the use of user-customizable function buttons on the EOS-1D X.

Users are also able to select between ALL-I and IPB compression methods to suit their preferred post-production workflows. ALL-I compression results in larger file sizes but is ideal for speedy conversion during the editing process as individual frames are not linked to each other. IPB compression not only offers higher compression for smaller file sizes, it also offers image quality similar to previous versions of EOS Movie.

To meet professional demand for long takes and synchronizing multiple videos, video file sizes that exceed 4GB (FAT specifications) are automatically split. A new file is automatically created while recording continues without any interruption.

Enhanced Reliability and Durability

The EOS-1D X uses a completely new shutter unit featuring carbon fibre shutter blades that are lightweight and more rigid, with a life-span of up to 400,000 cycles assured. Also new to the EOS-1D series is the electronic curtain shutter, for a quieter operation during live view shooting.

With a robust magnesium alloy body, the EOS-1D X features a dust-proof and drip-proof design to meet the high demands presented by the most grueling of shooting conditions. A new dust removal system, Ultra Wave Motion Cleaning, makes use of two vibrating elements in a carrier wave system to effectively remove small particles from the sensor.

Frequently used controls like control dials have also been redesigned with non-contact rotation detection systems to reduce wear and tear.

Wireless and GPS Accessories

Accompanying the EOS-1D X are two new accessories to further expand the professional EOS System: the WFT-E6 wireless file transmitter and GP-E1 GPS receiver.

For image transfers up to three times faster than conventional wireless methods, the EOS-1D X coupled with the WFT-E6 dedicated wireless file transmitter is compatible with wireless LAN IEEE802.11n.

The WFT-E6 is more compact and lightweight than the WFT-E2 II, while sporting dustproof and water resistance performance equivalent to the EOS-1D X. With the Wireless Time Syncing function, up to 10 units of EOS-1D X can be synced.

The GP-E1 is a compact GPS receiver that automatically adds location information to the EXIF data of images shot by the EOS-1D X. A dedicated map application will also ship with the GP-E1, allowing users to reference shooting locations with ease.

Price & Availability

Price and availability of the EOS-1D X will be announced at a later date.

Editor’s Note:
The new EOS 1Dx will lure Professionals who had jumped ship to Nikon for the Nikon D3S back to Canon.
From the press photos, the profile of the 1 series remains somewhat similar and when compared to the 1DMark IV, slight differences are noted on the button arrangement on the back and the front remains very much the same with the earlier models running in the Canon Professional line.

This long awaited release by Canon had long been predicted since Nikon had successfully combined high shutter speed with high resolution seen in the D3S. As expected, Canon had improved and “upgraded” the specifications to compete the Nikon monster with the new EOS 1DX – only better with faster speed, better resolution and more goodies packed into a shooting Goliath.

Having used the EOS 1Ds Mark III & a current owner of a EOS 1D Mark IV, I see the EOS 1DX as a “Super upgrade”.
As a professional, there were many times I needed both speed and resolution in my line of work, ended up lugging the EOS 1D Mark IV (for speed) together with another EOS5D MarkII (for resolution). The weight will eventually kill me.

With the new EOS 1DX offering me both speed & resolution, this camera is the best testimonial that Canon finally listens to its users – especially Professionals like us that has to use 2 cameras (FF + Cropped) at most times.

Wait, maybe we (the Professionals) might ended up with 02 x EOS 1DX. One for back up right? (*Just Kidding!)
Expect the new EOS 1Dx to be in the price range slightly higher than the 1Ds MarkIII. I am hoping Canon will not price it beyond SGD $15,000.00 (So that I can still buy 2 of these. )

Wishful Thinking. :)~

Development Background

As a manufacturer of optical devices, Nikon has long developed products equipped with innovative new features based on technologies originally cultivated decades ago for film cameras. The many cameras released by Nikon over the years have continuously expanded photographic possibilities. Even with the nearly complete transition to digital that we see today, Nikon has continued to expand its lineups of compact digital cameras and digital-SLR cameras. Nikon’s COOLPIX-series cameras are user friendly compact digital cameras, while the D-series line of digital-SLR cameras supports the needs of an incredibly wide variety of photographer, from the beginner to the professional. Nikon will celebrate its 95th anniversary next year, and is extremely proud of its record of having utilized its optical technologies in the development of many innovative products over nearly a century. So that we may continue our role as a leading company in the imaging industry in this age when digital technologies have become so common, Nikon looks forward to proposing new forms of imaging enjoyment and value over the next century as well. The first step in this process has been the development of a new type of camera that creates new imaging possibilities never before considered with conventional compact digital cameras or digital-SLR cameras.

Nikon 1 J1 / V1 Primary Features

  1. The world’s smallest and lightest*1 interchangeable lens digital cameras that propose new forms of imaging expressionFaster image processing and superior reproduction characteristics have been achieved for both still images and movies through the combination of the CMOS image sensor and image-processing engine, both developed by Nikon. The cameras are also equipped with Nikon’s newest lens mount system. Despite the new lens mount, the mount adapter enables the use of existing F-mount NIKKOR lenses*2 with the J1 and V1, for excellent compatibility with equipment users may already own.
    • Nikon 1 mount, Nikon’s new compact, high-performance lens mount systemThe Nikon 1 mount is the new lens mount system developed for compatibility with Nikon’s new imaging format. The new mount not only supports the dedicated 1 NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6, 1 NIKKOR VR 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6, 1 NIKKOR 10mm f/2.8 and 1 NIKKOR VR 10-100mm f/4.5-5.6 PD-ZOOM Nikon 1-mount interchangeable lenses, but also F-mount NIKKOR lenses*2, manufactured by Nikon for more than half a century, when the new FT1 mount adapter is used. This enables users to enjoy tremendous variety in their imaging expression with the ability to choose the lens best suited to the scene, subject, or their own creative intent from a broad lineup of standard and special-purpose lenses.
    • The world’s first*3 cameras to be equipped with a new super high-speed AF CMOS image sensor and offer focal plane phase detection AFThe new super high-speed AF CMOS sensor is a Nikon CX-format CMOS image sensor. With the new CX format, Nikon has added a new imaging format to its existing Nikon FX and DX formats for digital-SLR cameras. The J1 and V1 are the world’s first interchangeable lens digital cameras equipped with focal plane phase detection AF*3 for the world’s fastest autofocusing*4. They offer standard sensitivities of ISO 100 to 3200, with the ability to further increase sensitivity to an equivalent of ISO 6400 with a Hi 1 setting. • New EXPEED 3 image processing engineThe cameras are equipped with Nikon’s latest image-processing engine, EXPEED 3, which is based on EXPEED, Nikon’s exclusive comprehensive image-processing concept, and optimized for the Nikon 1 system for increased speed and performance.
  2. Simple operation with compact and lightweight bodies that make them perfect for everyday useThe J1 and V1 are compact and lightweight cameras that you can keep with you at all times, making them perfect not only for vacations and special events, but also for quick and easy capture of everyday scenes or unexpected episodes.
You can easily record photos or movies with four shooting modes (Motion Snapshot, Smart Photo Selector, Still image, Movie).
  3. A new advanced hybrid autofocus system that enables the world’s fastest autofocusing*1 with the world’s most focus points*2The advanced hybrid autofocus system combines phase detection AF, which enables faster focusing and superior subject tracking performance with moving subjects, with contrast-detect AF, which performs well in low-light conditions. This hybrid system ensures optimal focusing under a variety of shooting conditions.
As the world’s first*1 interchangeable lens cameras to implement focal plane phase detection AF, the J1 and V1 have achieved the high-speed autofocusing needed for certain capture of even the most unexpected photo opportunities. This enables certain capture of the perfect photo opportunities when shooting moving subjects and subjects such as children and pets whose movement is very difficult to predict.
What’s more, at 10 fps, the cameras also offer the world’s fastest continuous shooting rate*3 with AF tracking, and the world’s fastest high-speed continuous shooting rate*4 of 60 fps.
The J1 and V1 also boast the most focus points*2—73 with phase detection AF—available with any interchangeable lens digital camera currently available.

    • *1Among interchangeable lens digital cameras available as of September 21, 2011. Statement based on performance with shooting using the 1 NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 at the maximum wide-angle position with AF-area mode set to Single-point. Results based on Nikon test conditions.
    • *2Among interchangeable lens digital cameras available as of September 21, 2011. Refers to the number of phase detection AF points available for selection at an AF-area mode setting of Single-point. (Based on Nikon research.)
    • *3At shutter speeds of 1/60 s or faster and an aperture setting of f/5.6 or larger. Results based on Nikon test conditions as of September 21, 2011. (Based on Nikon research.)
    • *4The maximum number of shots per burst is 30 with the V1 and 12 with the J1. Maximum shooting rate when focus is locked with the first shot in a burst. Results based on Nikon test conditions as of September 21, 2011. (Based on Nikon research.)
  4. Motion Snapshot, imaging function that combines full-HD movie with a still image for more dramatic imaging expressionIn Motion Snapshot mode, simply pressing the shutter-release button records a still image and about a second of high-resolution movie footage beginning before and ending after the time the shutter-release button was pressed. Movies recorded in Motion Snapshot mode are played back in slow motion. With slow-motion playback at 0.4x normal playback speed of the movie and a still image, Motion Snapshot allows users to express impressive moments that show slight changes in expression, the rustling of tree leaves, or fluctuations in nature.Shooting/recording: Choose one of four themes (Beauty, Waves, Relaxation, Tenderness) prior to shooting. When the shutter-release button is pressed halfway, the camera begins recording movie footage to the memory buffer. When the shutter-release button is pressed the rest of the way down, a still image, along with about a second of movie footage beginning before and ending after the time the shutter-release button was pressed, are recorded to the memory card.Playback: After approximately 2.5 seconds of movie footage recorded in Motion Snapshot is played back in slow motion, the still image is displayed. Total movie/still image display lasts for 10 seconds, during which time the background music for the selected theme is played. The movie file and still image file recorded each time the shutter-release button is pressed in Motion Snapshot mode are stored as a set on the memory card. This fun new feature enables a new form of imaging expression that combines both still images and movie footage using conventional shooting operations.
  5. Smart Photo Selector for simple capture of the best shotWhen the shutter-release button is pressed halfway in Smart Photo Selector mode, the camera focuses and begins buffering images. When the shutter-release button is then pressed the rest of the way down, the camera compares shots recorded to the buffer both before and after the shutter-release button was pressed, and automatically selects five to record to the memory card. It also eliminates the need for capturing a large volume of shots with continuous shooting and the troublesome process of later manually selecting the best shot from a series.Shooting/recording:Rotate the mode dial to Smart Photo Selector mode. When the shutter-release button is pressed halfway, the camera focuses and begins recording images to the buffer memory. Up to 20 images can be saved in the buffer memory each time the shutter-release button is pressed (some before the shutter-release button is pressed, some after). Of the 20 buffered images, the camera automatically records the single best shot based on movement and composition, as well as four additional candidate images to the memory card.Playback: Users can choose a different “best shot” than that selected by the camera from the candidate images, and also delete unnecessary images.
  6. A simple, high-quality designThe concepts of simple, streamlined, fashionable and high-quality were adopted for design of both the Nikon 1 J1 and V1. The only decoration on these flat, smooth cameras is the Nikon 1 brand name and the J1 or V1 model name on the front of the cameras. Positioning of a rear grip ensures a firm hold on the camera without sacrificing its simple, flat shape.
What’s more, lenses are available in the same colors as the cameras* for an integrated appearance. The graphical user interface (GUI) adopted for monitor display is structured to be as simple and streamlined as the cameras themselves. Superfluous menus have been eliminated for an intuitive, easy-to-understand GUI design.
    • *Kit lenses only.
      • Air-gapless structure adopted for LCD monitor with wide viewing angleThe J1 is equipped with a 3.0-inch, approximately 460k-dot TFT LCD monitor with wide-viewing angle, and the V1 offers a 3.0-inch, approximately 921k-dot TFT LCD monitor with wide-viewing angle. The monitors built into both cameras utilize an air-gapless structure with which the protective glass and LCD panel are integrated for a thinner design and increased visibility outdoors, enabling users to enjoy more beautiful display of their photos and movies.
      • Short Movie Creator automatic movie editing software that is easy to use and can be launched independentlyThe Short Movie Creator software bundled with the cameras is an automatic movie editing application that is fun to use with still images and movies recorded with Nikon 1 cameras. It can be used to easily create original short movies with imaging effects (styles) and background music. Short movies created with Short Movie Creator can be saved to a memory card for viewing on the camera, or uploaded to online movie sharing sites such as YouTubeTM. In addition, collaboration with Nikon’s image transfer, browsing, editing and sharing software, ViewNX 2, enables easy organization and editing of still images and movies.
        • Short Movie Creator Primary Features
          • Easily create original short movies from still images and movies by simply selecting an imaging effect (style) and music. With a maximum playback time of 30 minutes, three options are available: Summarize to fit to music, Use all images and movies, Summarize to manual length.
          • Priority can be placed on the two seconds before and after a specific portion by simply selecting a “best scene”. A single movie file can be registered more than once for specification of additional best scenes.
          • Music files can also be edited so that only a specific portion is used.
          • The frame size and frame rate of short movies can be selected to suit the manner in which they will be used. Short movies can be saved to memory cards in a format that makes it possible to view them with the cameras.
          • Titles and credits can be added to movie files.*
            • *Windows version only.
      • Bright, high-contrast electronic viewfinder with a resolution of approximately 1440k-dot (V1 only)The V1 is equipped with a bright, high-contrast electronic viewfinder (EVF) with a resolution of approximately 1440k-dot (SVGA). It is extremely clear with a frame coverage of approximately 100%, and utilizes a color filter system that prevents color breakup that appears as a rainbow artifact due to the interaction between subject movement and the photographer’s eye, for faithful display of moving subjects.
      • Additional Features and Functions

        • Movie recording mode with 1920 x 1080/60i full-HD movie support for superior picture quality
        • Equipped with Nikon’s exclusive imaging system, Picture Control, which allows users to choose and adjust the way in which the camera processes photographs according to the type of scene or their own individual preference
        • Support for RAW (NEF) recording built in*1
        • Active D-Lighting, which adjusts exposure according to the scene to prevent loss of detail in highlights and shadows for images in which optimal contrast is preserved
        • Infrared receivers for remote control operation on the front and back*2 of the cameras enable wireless control over the shutter (optional ML-L3 wireless remote control supported)
        • Scene Auto Selector, with which the cameras automatically optimize settings according to the subject
        • Built-in dust reduction function*3

Canon U.S.A. Announces PowerShot S100 and PowerShot SX40 HS Models With New DIGIC 5 Image Processor Providing Enhanced Resolution and Faster Shooting Speeds

Featuring Full HD Video Recording, High-speed Burst HQ and Intelligent IS

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y.  – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announces the addition of two feature-packed digital cameras, the PowerShot S100 and PowerShot SX40 HS, to its award-winning lineup of point-and-shoot models. In addition to superb low-light performance and increased overall speed, these two cameras include a new DIGIC 5 image processor, HS SYSTEM, Full HD video capture, High-speed Burst HQ and Intelligent IS providing clearer, smoother looking images.

“Photo enthusiasts are always on the search for that next great camera to help them achieve the best results,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies and Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “The inclusion of the new DIGIC 5 image processor and Full HD recording capabilities on both new models will provide users with the tools needed to capture brilliant images and videos as they continue their photographic journey.”

A challenging task for the photographer on assignment or appointed family photographer is working under low-light conditions. Helping improve the quality of images from those situations is Canon’s HS SYSTEM, where the camera’s image processor and high-sensitivity image sensor work in tandem to enhance low-light image quality. With the PowerShot S100 and PowerShot SX40 HS, Canon has introduced a new DIGIC 5 image processor, maintaining the cameras’ superb low-light image quality while improving overall camera operation and color accuracy. The new image processor has improved noise reduction and advanced Multi-area White Balance optimizing color tones of both subject and background under multiple light sources.

High-speed, High-quality, High-performance

An added benefit of the DIGIC 5 image processor is the incorporation of the new High-speed Burst HQ1providing users with the ability to continuously capture a maximum of eight frames. This new feature will allow the story of a child scoring the winning goal on the soccer field or a marathon runner crossing the finish line to be told frame-by-frame through the eye of the photographer.

Intelligent IS

One of the most important innovations for a point-and-shoot camera has been Image Stabilization (IS) since it helps improve image quality by reducing camera blur for both images and videos. Canon has taken this technology one step further with the new Intelligent IS which automatically chooses from six different modes (Normal, Macro, Panning, Dynamic, Powered, Tripod) to optimize image stabilization and help achieve crisp, blur-free images for various shooting conditions.

It’s an HD World

When the time comes to share one of those “can’t miss” moments from a family day at the park or of a pride of lions on a safari expedition, the use of HD video is becoming more popular than ever. As a leader in HD video capture, Canon has incorporated Full HD recording (1920 x 1080) capabilities for both new models. Providing exceptional resolution for crystal clear HD video, both cameras have a dedicated movie record button in addition to having the ability to zoom while recording, further enhancing the overall user experience. An HDMI terminal output has also been included for easy sharing of videos with stereo sound on HD ready televisions

PowerShot S100 Digital Camera

Picture: S90 & S95 users can look forward to a new option for upgrading, now available in Silver too!

When the PowerShot S95 Digital camera was announced in 2010, it received critical praise for having an impressive feature set and superb low-light capabilities. Building upon the success of this model is the PowerShot S100, featuring a host of upgrades making it a must-have for any photo enthusiast. Featuring a 12.1-megapixel CMOS image sensor — part of the HS SYSTEM — this versatile camera has a 24-120mm wide angle lens with 5x optical zoom, GPS functionality and is capable of achieving improved low-light performance of up to ISO 6400. Additionally, the camera utilizes an f/2.0 lens increasing the camera’s low-light performance by allowing additional light to reach the sensor while creating a shallow depth-of-field for portraits with dynamic, soft backgrounds. The PowerShot S100 will also now be available in either black or silver. Other features of this camera include:

  • A large 3.0-inch wide LCD screen for easy viewing of those images and menu options.
  • GPS capabilities2 where satellites collect data of the latitude, longitude and altitude of an image’s location, which is then stored to the image’s EXIF data3. A map utility software is included with the camera to view the locations where images were captured. There’s also an internal GPS logger to track the day’s photographic route.
  • A full range of shooting and recording modes similar to those found in DSLR cameras including RAW + JPEG and a control ring on the front of the camera for quick, manual adjustment of key functions such as ISO, zoom and focus.
  • Compatibility with the HF-DC2 High-Power Flash, which is an optional flash accessory that operates wirelessly and increases the effective flash range up to approximately 30 feet.

The estimated selling price of the PowerShot S100 Digital camera is $429.99 and is scheduled to be available in early November.*

PowerShot SX40 HS

Picture: The Canon SX 40 HS will win fans with its “DSLR-ish” Look and the specs are value for money!

When visiting the local zoo or sitting in the stands of a youth football game, having a camera that has the flexibility to capture images at close-up and far-off distances is a necessity. Canon’s PowerShot SX40 HS is just the camera one would need to ensure those images are of high-quality. Other features include:

  • An incredible 35x optical zoom range (24mm-840mm) with image stabilizer and a 12.1-megapixel CMOS image sensor — part of the HS SYSTEM – the camera can capture low-light images of enhanced image quality up to ISO 3200.
  • A 2.7-inch wide vari-angle LCD has been included for easy viewing of images and menus from almost any angle.
  • Improved Smart AUTO settings to ensure the settings are intelligently selected based upon the cameras 32 predefined shooting situations.
  • The Zoom Framing Assist button, which helps the user steady the camera when tracking a moving subject at extreme telephoto settings keeping it in focus.

The estimated selling price of the PowerShot SX40 HS Digital camera is $429.99 and is scheduled to be available in late September.*

PENTAX OPTIO RZ18 FACT SHEET 18X optical zoom lens with 25mm wide-angle coverage to handle a variety of subjects and scenes
The Optio RZ18 features a high-performance 18X optical zoom lens covering focal lengths from 25mm wide angle to 450mm super-telephoto (in the 35mm format).  The extra-wide zoom range captures a wide range of subjects and scenes — from spectacular landscapes to fast-action sports events. It also offers high-quality macro shooting down to just four centimeters from the subject and a digital wide function for an ultra-wide-angle image (equivalent to an image taken with an approximately 19mm lens in the 35mm format) from two separate images.  An Intelligent Zoom function further extends the zoom range to approximately 130 times to cover the focal length of an approximately 3250mm super-telephoto lens (in the 35mm format).

Exceptional image quality assured by latest super-resolution technology
With 16 effective megapixels, a high-performance smc PENTAX zoom lens and the advanced image processing system — a system that uses the latest super-resolution technology to optimize image quality through meticulous section-by-section treatment of the captured image — the Optio RZ18 delivers well-defined, high-quality images with extra-fine resolution. Even when images are enlarged to large sizes, the user is assured of sharp, high-resolution prints with edge-to-edge sharpness.

Multiple Shake Reduction for sharp, blur-free images
With a sensor-shift Shake Reduction (SR) mechanism and Pixel Track SR, the Optio RZ18’s dual shake reduction effectively reduces camera shake to a minimum for more blur-free images even under shake-prone shooting conditions such as when using the telephoto lens or when shooting at sunset or in indoor scenes. Other SR options include traditional high ISO Digital SR and Movie SR for steady video recording.

Extra-large 3 inch LCD monitor
The Optio RZ18 features an HVGA high-resolution 3 inch color LCD monitor.  This extra-large monitor provides a clear view of images and menus so photographers easily may check captured images and menu settings. The Optio RZ18 also offers a setting to magnify the letters displayed, by which users can further enhance the legibility of the menus and the operability of the camera.

Auto Picture mode
The Optio RZ18 features the PENTAX-original Auto Picture mode, which automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode for a given subject or scene by accurately assessing various photographic conditions on and around the subject. This user-friendly mode selects one of 16 shooting modes (including Blue Sky, Sunset, Pet, and many more) and optimizes various camera settings (including sensitivity and shutter speed)
for better results with minimal effort.

Upgraded Pet mode for automatic detection of dog and cat faces
The Optio RZ18 features the latest version of the Pet mode, which comes in handy when taking pictures of dogs and cats. This unique mode not only detects the faces of dogs and cats with great accuracy, but it also gives priority to three pre-registered pet faces over unregistered ones, so that users can effortlessly focus on and expose for their own pets when in a group of pets.

High-quality HDTV movie recording
The Optio RZ18 captures beautiful, 720p high-definition-TV-quality movie clips (1280 x 720 pixels).* It also comes equipped with the sophisticated Movie Shake Reduction (SR) mode,** which automatically compensates camera shake during movie shooting with the help of exclusive software. With the Optio RZ18, everyone can enjoy high-quality movie shooting with minimal effort.
* When the Optio RZ18’s AV output terminal is used, movie clips are output as normal image-size data. If the user wishes to play back movie clips at high-definition TV proportions (1280 x 720 pixels), the data must be transferred to a personal computer for playback.
** When the Movie SR mode is selected, the angle of view becomes narrower than normal shooting.

Automatic face detection for beautiful, lively snapshots
The Optio RZ18 features the sophisticated Face Detection AF & AE function. This sophisticated feature instantly and accurately detects as many as 32 faces within the image field, then catches them in sharp focus and optimum exposure in a mere 0.03 seconds — even when some of the faces are tilted or turned away from the camera. To assist the photographer in capturing beautiful, lively snapshots, the Optio RZ18 also comes equipped with other user-friendly features, including:
•    Smile Capture mode that automatically releases the shutter the moment the camera detects the subject’s smile
•    Blink Detection function that warns the photographer when the subject’s eyes close at the time of shutter release.

Additional Features
•    Wireless remote-control shooting using an optional PENTAX infrared remote controllers
•    Burst shooting of up to 40 images, at a maximum speed of approximately 9 images per second
•    Digital filters, including Miniature, Toy Camera, and more to add creative visual effects
•    Choice of three image ratios (4:3, 16:9 and 1:1) to accommodate different shooting applications
