Designed for Full-Frame cameras, the Tokina AT-X 17-35mm F/4 give photographers a new wide-angle option. With a focal length of 17mm at the wide side the lens yields a spectacular 103.9 degree field of view which is great for shooting in tight situations or for taking in wide expanses of space.

This compact wide-angle zoom has a bright constant F/4 aperture make viewing and auto focus possible in lower light situations but still maintaining a reasonable size and weight.

Two Super-Low Dispersion glass elements and one aspheric glass allow the proprietary optical design to achieve excellent contrast and sharpness as well as controlling chromatic aberration.

Tokina’s exclusive One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows the photographer to switch between AF and MF simply by snapping the focus ring forward for AF
and back toward the lens mount for manual focusing. Additionally the mechanics have been designed for better seals around moving parts making the lens more water-resistant* than lenses of the past. The lens is also designed to stand up to the rigors of daily use by photographers in a wide variety of shooting conditions and environments.

Time’s Up for Nikon D3S, Move Aside for Canon EOS 1DX

Canon integrates 1D and 1Ds series to launch the EOS-1D X
– World’s fastest full-frame DSLR with new Dual DIGIC 5+ processor aims to conquer the professional market.

Singapore, 18 October, 2011 – Canon today announces the launch of the new EOS-1D X, the ultimate professional Digital SLR (DSLR) camera designed to support any photographic application and all shooting demands.

Technological evolution in the EOS-1D X takes a giant leap forward from the EOS-1Ds Mark III and EOS-1D Mark IV.  Marrying and improving on the class-leading features of its twin sources of inspiration, the EOS-1D X sports a full-frame 35mm 18.1-megapixel CMOS sensor with a shooting speed of up to 14 frames per second (fps), powered by the brand new Dual DIGIC 5+ image processor.

Developed based on careful research on the needs of professional photographers around the world, the EOS-1D X expands the realm of photographic possibilities by bringing high image quality and high continuous shooting speeds together, two crucial points of photography traditionally kept separate.

“For the longest time, professional photographers worked with two differently built cameras that emphasize individually on shooting speed or image quality,” said Andrew Koh, Senior Director and General Manager, Consumer Imaging and Information Group, CanonSingapore. “It has long been an ideal to have both speed and quality in a single form, and today Canon is proud to announce that with the launch of the EOS-1D X, we have finally realized this vision.”

Stunning Image Quality

The EOS-1D X’s new 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor has approximately 18.1 effective megapixels featuring a superior signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and a larger pixel size of 6.95μm square pixels, as compared to the EOS-1D Mark IV’s 5.7μm square pixels. The larger pixel and sensor size enhance light gathering efficiency and faithfully capture the mood of the original scene with minimal noise.

Seventeen times faster than the DIGIC 4 processor used in the current EOS series, the all-new Dual DIGIC 5+ processor in the EOS-1D X boasts ultra high speed processing to produce unprecedented image quality even at high ISO settings and shooting speeds.

Representing a two-stop improvement in noise reduction, images shot at ISO 51,200 using the EOS-1D X are comparable to ISO 12,800 images shot with the EOS-1D Mark IV. Standard ISO settings have increased by 2 stops, up to ISO 51,200, compared to ISO 12,800 with the EOS-1D Mark IV. This can be further expanded up to ISO 204,800. With such a wide range of ISO settings, professionals can now eliminate motion blur in almost any kind of situations and yet achieve ultra low noise quality.

Other improvements in the EOS

-1D X’s imaging capabilities include real-time chromatic aberration correction, in-camera RAW processing, lens distortion correction (using in-camera RAW processing) and multiple exposures.

Unprecedented High-speed Performance

The EOS-1D X offers instant response to match sports photographers’ reflexes with the minimum shutter-release lag reduced to 36 milliseconds (from 40 milliseconds in the EOS-1D Mark IV).

In the One-Shot AF and AI Servo AF modes, a maximum continuous shooting speed of 12fps is attainable with ISO speeds of 25,600 and below. Photographers also have the option to activate the super high-speed continuous shooting mode of 14fps.

The EOS-1D X also uses a new mirror mechanism, the Quad Active Mirror Stopper. Equipped with separate bounce lock mechanisms and double balancers, the mechanism reduces mirror bounce instantly, and enables a stable yet precise high-speed drive to ensure photographers will never miss any high-speed action.

Innovative AE/AF System

The EOS-1D X features a next-generation Auto Focus (AF) system, sporting a 61 point high-density reticular AF (41 cross-type points) that offers wide, auto focus coverage at high precision as well as enhanced subject tracking capability.

The EOS-1D Mark IV utilizes 39 f/2.8-sensitive cross-type sensors, which are only maximized to help the user achieve faster AF when lenses have an aperture of f/2.8 or brighter. This feature is enhanced in the EOS-1D X by utilizing 41 f/4.0-sensitive cross-type sensors. Professionals can now use f/4.0 lenses to achieve the same AF speed compared to an f/2.8 lens on the EOS-1D Mark IV.

This is also applicable even with an f/2.8 lens attached to a 1.4X extender (making an effective aperture value of f/4.0) – these 41 cross-type sensors will be usable as well. For f/2.8 lenses, there are 5 dual cross-type sensors in the centre that allow ultra high precision AF, exceeding previous EOS-1D series models. 21 cross-type sensors in the middle are f/5.6-sensitive, giving the EOS-1D X dramatically expanded focusing accuracy to support a larger range of f/4.0 and f/5.6 lenses.

At the heart of the new AF unit is the new EOS iSA (Intelligent Subject Analysis) System that employs a 100,000-pixel RGB Metering Sensor and AE-dedicated DIGIC 4 image processor. This innovation recognizes a subject’s color and face, in addition to movement, to make Intelligent Tracking and Recognition (iTR) possible, offering reliable and continuous tracking of the subject. These two technologies work in tandem to deliver better focusing capability in lower light.

Advanced EOS Movie

Already highly regarded for its high-quality images, low noise and cinematic look, EOS Movie technology takes another leap forward in the EOS-1D X. With the new Dual DIGIC 5+ processor, color artifacts and moiré that appear in scenes (with fine horizontal lines) are drastically reduced, producing industry-grade images with low noise, even at high ISO speeds.

New EOS Movie features in the EOS-1D X include SMTPE-compliant time code embedding, manually adjustable audio recording level settings and recording in P, Av, Tv and Manual modes. Immediate recording is also possible through the use of user-customizable function buttons on the EOS-1D X.

Users are also able to select between ALL-I and IPB compression methods to suit their preferred post-production workflows. ALL-I compression results in larger file sizes but is ideal for speedy conversion during the editing process as individual frames are not linked to each other. IPB compression not only offers higher compression for smaller file sizes, it also offers image quality similar to previous versions of EOS Movie.

To meet professional demand for long takes and synchronizing multiple videos, video file sizes that exceed 4GB (FAT specifications) are automatically split. A new file is automatically created while recording continues without any interruption.

Enhanced Reliability and Durability

The EOS-1D X uses a completely new shutter unit featuring carbon fibre shutter blades that are lightweight and more rigid, with a life-span of up to 400,000 cycles assured. Also new to the EOS-1D series is the electronic curtain shutter, for a quieter operation during live view shooting.

With a robust magnesium alloy body, the EOS-1D X features a dust-proof and drip-proof design to meet the high demands presented by the most grueling of shooting conditions. A new dust removal system, Ultra Wave Motion Cleaning, makes use of two vibrating elements in a carrier wave system to effectively remove small particles from the sensor.

Frequently used controls like control dials have also been redesigned with non-contact rotation detection systems to reduce wear and tear.

Wireless and GPS Accessories

Accompanying the EOS-1D X are two new accessories to further expand the professional EOS System: the WFT-E6 wireless file transmitter and GP-E1 GPS receiver.

For image transfers up to three times faster than conventional wireless methods, the EOS-1D X coupled with the WFT-E6 dedicated wireless file transmitter is compatible with wireless LAN IEEE802.11n.

The WFT-E6 is more compact and lightweight than the WFT-E2 II, while sporting dustproof and water resistance performance equivalent to the EOS-1D X. With the Wireless Time Syncing function, up to 10 units of EOS-1D X can be synced.

The GP-E1 is a compact GPS receiver that automatically adds location information to the EXIF data of images shot by the EOS-1D X. A dedicated map application will also ship with the GP-E1, allowing users to reference shooting locations with ease.

Editor’s Note:
The new EOS 1Dx will lure Professionals who had jumped ship to Nikon for the Nikon D3S back to Canon.
From the press photos, the profile of the 1 series remains somewhat similar and when compared to the 1DMark IV, slight differences are noted on the button arrangement on the back and the front remains very much the same with the earlier models running in the Canon Professional line. 

This long awaited release by Canon had long been predicted since Nikon had successfully combined high shutter speed with high resolution seen in the D3S. As expected, Canon had improved and “upgraded” the specifications to compete the Nikon monster with the new EOS 1DX – only better with faster speed, better resolution and more goodies packed into a shooting Goliath.

Having used the EOS 1Ds Mark III & a current owner of a EOS 1D Mark IV, I see the EOS 1DX as a “Super upgrade”.
As a professional, there were many times I needed both speed and resolution in my line of work, ended up lugging the EOS 1D Mark IV (for speed) together with another EOS5D MarkII (for resolution). The weight will eventually kill me.

With the new EOS 1DX offering me both speed & resolution, this camera is the best testimonial that Canon finally listens to its users – especially Professionals like us that has to use 2 cameras (FF + Cropped) at most times.

Wait, maybe we (the Professionals) might ended up with 02 x EOS 1DX. One for back up right? (*Just Kidding!)
Expect the new EOS 1Dx to be in the price range slightly higher than the 1Ds MarkIII. I am hoping Canon will not price it beyond SGD $15,000.00 (So that I can still buy 2 of these. )

    What’s more, at 10 fps, the cameras also offer the world’s fastest continuous shooting rate*3 with AF tracking, and the world’s fastest high-speed continuous shooting rate*4 of 60 fps.
    The J1 and V1 also boast the most focus points*2—73 with phase detection AF—available with any interchangeable lens digital camera currently available.

It also eliminates the need for capturing a large volume of shots with continuous shooting and the troublesome process of later manually selecting the best shot from a series.Shooting/recording:Rotate the mode dial to Smart Photo Selector mode. When the shutter-release button is pressed halfway, the camera focuses and begins recording images to the buffer memory. Up to 20 images can be saved in the buffer memory each time the shutter-release button is pressed (some before the shutter-release button is pressed, some after). Of the 20 buffered images, the camera automatically records the single best shot based on movement and composition, as well as four additional candidate images to the memory card.Playback: Users can choose a different “best shot” than that selected by the camera from the candidate images, and also delete unnecessary images.
  6. A simple, high-quality designThe concepts of simple, streamlined, fashionable and high-quality were adopted for design of both the Nikon 1 J1 and V1. The only decoration on these flat, smooth cameras is the Nikon 1 brand name and the J1 or V1 model name on the front of the cameras. Positioning of a rear grip ensures a firm hold on the camera without sacrificing its simple, flat shape.
    What’s more, lenses are available in the same colors as the cameras* for an integrated appearance. The graphical user interface (GUI) adopted for monitor display is structured to be as simple and streamlined as the cameras themselves. Superfluous menus have been eliminated for an intuitive, easy-to-understand GUI design.

Ricoh Establishes PENTAX RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD.

Tokyo, October 1, 2011–Ricoh Company, Ltd. (President & CEO: Shiro Kondo; hereinafter referred to as “Ricoh”) announces the establishment of PENTAX RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. as its wholly owned subsidiary on October 1, 2011.

Earlier, HOYA Corporation (President & CEO: Hiroshi Suzuki; hereinafter referred to as “HOYA”) transferred the PENTAX Imaging Systems Business to PENTAX Imaging Corporation, a newly established subsidiary of HOYA, through an absorption-type split (spin off) and business transfer. Ricoh has acquired all shares outstanding in PENTAX Imaging Corporation, as of today, completing the transaction. Ricoh also changed the name of the company at the same time.

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y.  – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announces the addition of two feature-packed digital cameras, the PowerShot S100 and PowerShot SX40 HS, to its award-winning lineup of point-and-shoot models. In addition to superb low-light performance and increased overall speed, these two cameras include a new DIGIC 5 image processor, HS SYSTEM, Full HD video capture, High-speed Burst HQ and Intelligent IS providing clearer, smoother looking images.

A challenging task for the photographer on assignment or appointed family photographer is working under low-light conditions. Helping improve the quality of images from those situations is Canon’s HS SYSTEM, where the camera’s image processor and high-sensitivity image sensor work in tandem to enhance low-light image quality. With the PowerShot S100 and PowerShot SX40 HS, Canon has introduced a new DIGIC 5 image processor, maintaining the cameras’ superb low-light image quality while improving overall camera operation and color accuracy. The new image processor has improved noise reduction and advanced Multi-area White Balance optimizing color tones of both subject and background under multiple light sources.

High-speed, High-quality, High-performance

An added benefit of the DIGIC 5 image processor is the incorporation of the new High-speed Burst HQ1providing users with the ability to continuously capture a maximum of eight frames. This new feature will allow the story of a child scoring the winning goal on the soccer field or a marathon runner crossing the finish line to be told frame-by-frame through the eye of the photographer.

Intelligent IS

One of the most important innovations for a point-and-shoot camera has been Image Stabilization (IS) since it helps improve image quality by reducing camera blur for both images and videos. Canon has taken this technology one step further with the new Intelligent IS which automatically chooses from six different modes (Normal, Macro, Panning, Dynamic, Powered, Tripod) to optimize image stabilization and help achieve crisp, blur-free images for various shooting conditions.

When the time comes to share one of those “can’t miss” moments from a family day at the park or of a pride of lions on a safari expedition, the use of HD video is becoming more popular than ever. As a leader in HD video capture, Canon has incorporated Full HD recording (1920 x 1080) capabilities for both new models. PowerShot S100 Digital Camera

When the PowerShot S95 Digital camera was announced in 2010, it received critical praise for having an impressive feature set and superb low-light capabilities. Building upon the success of this model is the PowerShot S100, featuring a host of upgrades making it a must-have for any photo enthusiast. Featuring a 12.1-megapixel CMOS image sensor — part of the HS SYSTEM — this versatile camera has a 24-120mm wide angle lens with 5x optical zoom, GPS functionality and is capable of achieving improved low-light performance of up to ISO 6400. Additionally, the camera utilizes an f/2.0 lens increasing the camera’s low-light performance by allowing additional light to reach the sensor while creating a shallow depth-of-field for portraits with dynamic, soft backgrounds.   • Compatibility with the HF-DC2 High-Power Flash, which is an optional flash accessory that operates wirelessly and increases the effective flash range up to approximately 30 feet.

The Optio RZ18 features a high-performance 18X optical zoom lens covering focal lengths from 25mm wide angle to 450mm super-telephoto (in the 35mm format).  The extra-wide zoom range captures a wide range of subjects and scenes — from spectacular landscapes to fast-action sports events. Increase Camera Intelligence

Helping to capture blur-free images and video, Canon introduces the new Intelligent IS system in these PowerShot models. Many novice photographers are intimidated when adjusting camera settings. Determining the right moment to “freeze” what you are shooting can be difficult in action scenes. The Canon HF-DC2 High-Power Flash

To further enhance the built-in flash of the PowerShot lineup, Canon has developed the HF-DC2 High-Power Flash , which increases the effective flash range up to approximately 30 feet and supports 24mm wide-angle shooting with the wide-panel attachment. The HF-DC2 automatically fires in-sync with the camera’s built-in flash and operates wirelessly to capture subjects at twice the range of the camera’s built-in flash. The HF-DC2 includes a mounting bracket that attaches to the camera, but it can also be hand-held or mounted on a tripod. The HF-DC2 High-Power Flash is scheduled to be available in December for an estimated retail price of $149.99.

Three Canon products win esteemed EISA awards in Europe

Three Canon products were recognized with prestigious product awards by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA), composed of 50 special interest magazines from 19 European countries focusing on such categories as photography, audio, video and mobile devices. The Canon EOS 600D (Canon Rebel T3i in the Americas and EOS Kiss X5 in Japan) digital SLR camera earned European Camera 2011-2012 honors, the Canon EF70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto lens was crowned European Professional Lens 2011-2012, and the Canon LEGRIA HF M41 (VIXIA HF M41 and iVIS HF M41) was named European Camcorder 2011-2012.

First launched in 1982, EISA awards are presented to products released in Europe within the past 12 months and deemed representative of their product category by a judging panel composed of editors of EISA-affiliated magazines specializing in that product division. Marking its 30th year, EISA has recognized a wide range of Canon products and technologies, including the company’s digital cameras, digital camcorders and inkjet printers. Canon took home its first EISA award in 1984 with the T70 SLR camera, and has since been honored with a total of 52 EISA awards spanning 26 years.

Canon EOS 600D: European Camera 2011-2012


Noted for its “very strong” set of features and customizable functions, the 18.0-megapixel Canon EOS 600D was recognized by the EISA jury for its “excellent” resolution and low-noise performance, making the camera an “extremely desirable model” for entry-level users. Canon EF70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM: European Professional Lens 2011-2012


Acclaimed as an “amazing telephoto lens,” the EF70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM was awarded for its “high image quality” performance, “extremely durable” construction, and “surprisingly compact” design. According to EISA judges, the cost-effective lens “sets a new standard” for this popular zoom range thanks to its professional-level Auto Focus and Image Stabilizer functions, and performs “very well even at its widest aperture.”

Canon LEGRIA HF M41: European Camcorder 2011-2012

The compact LEGRIA HF M41, lauded as “useful for shooting high-quality videos under practically all conditions,” comes equipped with an “easy-to-use menu system” and “as many automatic and manual functions [users] could wish for.” The high-end camcorder was awarded for its “extremely fast” auto-focus performance and “extremely good” picture quality, and earned praise from the EISA jury for its “exceptionally low level of noise, even in poor light.”

In addition to the EISA award, the EOS 600D was named “Best DSLR Entry Level in 2011” by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) in April of this year.*

Getty Images’ 27Letters is a dedicated website for creatives that showcases the visual trends that are currently setting the global visual conversation. Collated alphabetically and updated every few days, 27Letters was first launched in 2010. The initiative features insights into the most used, referenced and talked-about visual trends in the media space, from over 250 influential media sites and opinion-forming blogs, providing “bite-sized” reports on the latest visual content.

P is for Preppy: It’s hard to imagine at this moment in time, but next year we will be swimming in Preppy. Baz Luhrmann’s version of The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and a voiceover by Tobey Maguire, will launch 1920s fashions. An early twist on this is Masaya Kuroki’s Spring 2012 collection for French label Maison Kitsune. Better dig out that boater and blazer.

U is for Ultra-Man: Masculinity in advertising gets evermore magnified in Old Spice’s face-off between Isaiah Mustafa and Fabio. These cartoon versions of maleness, trading mock-insults, has reeled in viewing numbers via Twitter questions from users. There’s a lot of mock-heroic “hyper-masculinity” around in ads at the moment. It gives licence to a certain amount of vanity. Expect more exploration of imagery around masculinity.

W is for Wonder: As the Atlantis completed its final mission, the Big Picture ran this visual homage to the last space flight. This image of the International Space Station and Atlantis (the Russian Soyuz is docked on the left) with the earth in the background, captures the sense of technological endeavour and the scale of human achievement. Space imagery will still tug emotional strings around wonder.

Editor’s Note
This consumer targeted lens is in its 2nd incarnation since the previous version. Although it is expected that Professionals will shun this lens opting for the better built “L” brethens to the likes of  EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM II or the long serving EF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS USM, this EF-S 55-250mm is really targeting at beginners who wish to have access to super telephoto range without breaking their bank. As the competition heats up with replacement lens models, Canon had updated their “Kit Lens” with the new EF-S18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II and had given a better quality lens with good image quality recently, this EF-S55-250mm will be the “Partner lens” that was expected to be updated. And Canon did just as expected.

The EF-S 55-250mm has the 35mm equivalent range of 88-400mm on a typical Canon APS-C (1.6 crop). This is value for money in any sense. I am unable to comment on the image quality and handling at press time as I have not personally tried the lens, but based on the specs, asking price and expected improvement, I am sure this another Fantastic Plastic.

Will be back with a review if I manage to lay my hands on one of this. 🙂

Sigma Launch 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 DG HSM II

Following the recent update by competitor Tokina with their ATX12-24mm F4 PRO Mark II, Sigma had just launched a new lens unit into this segment with it’s new Mark II of 12-24mm with HSM. I am sure landscape photographers will not be bothered with the aperture as most of them are shooting in the region of F8 & beyond. Meanwhile, let’s hope Tamron is working hard on their offering for the same range too. See below for the specs for the new Sigma 12-24mm – the Ultra Wide Angle Zoom lens.

NEW “Hoodless” Tokina AT-X 107 NH

The Tokina AT-X 107 NH is a fish-eye lens that gives the digital photographer an approximate 180° field of view with dramatic curvature of field or “fish-eye” effect. The AT-X 107 NH only differs from the AT-X 107 DX in that the built-in hood as been removed allowing for a wider image area and more coverage on full-frame sensor (FX) cameras.*

The front element of the AT-X 107 DX has a newly formulated WR or “Water Repellent” optical coating on the glass. This new coating makes marks such as spots left by water or finger-prints much easier to clean than standard multi-coating. With the built-in hood removed the lens also fits in a wider variety of underwater housings.

The rear optical group of the lens contains 1 SD (Super-Low Dispersion) glass element to reduce the number of elements (pieces of glass) in the optical design in order to make the lens more compact, light-weight and faster focusing.

*Full corner to corner image can be achieved on an FX camera between approx. 14.5-17MM depending on the camera model, at 10-14MM there is a semi-circular view.

Eternity at a Moment – The Vision of 60 Photographers.

In commemoration of the 60th year anniversary of the company‘s establishment, Tamron will begin showing works of 60 photographers on August 30, on a special website made for the anniversary project

The 60 photographers used 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD (Model B008) to capture how they perceive “Eternity at a Moment”, at this point in time.

In October 2011 Tamron will also hold an photo exhibition bringing works by the 60 photographers together under one roof.

Tamron is pleased to showcase each of the interpretations of “Eternity at a Moment” by these 60 photographers.
