The Chaplin’s – Making Photography Delicious!

IMG-20130930-WA0010

14th October 2013, Singapore – As photographers, we take pleasure in shooting things revolving our life while finding new perspectives to everyday items. Food is one such favourite subject. I am sure you have seen tons of food photos shared on social media platforms, and I am very certain that you have friends that shot their every meal like a ritual before even consuming them. Never mind if the food turns lukewarm, these friends will tell you, “shoot first, eat later” – sounds familiar to you?

Recently, I came to know a few photography students of mine who loves to shoot delicious looking cakes & pastries. They will buy cakes & pastries and gather at someone’s home, then set up lights and shoot whatever they had bought. And after they have gotten their shots, they threw everything away. I was pretty shocked when I came to know about this. I questioned if there is the need to waste food for the sake of photography, then the students (mostly females) shared with me that they are watching their weight. I am totally lost for words.

Now, how about able to shoot some really delicious treats and you can indulge healthily without guilt after shooting?

IMG-20130930-WA0014

I came to know about The Chaplin’s recently through my peers. I was at a function, and the host offered me a slice of banana cake. On first look, the slice of banana cake looks like an ordinary banana cake and without much thought, I took a bite and I was totally mesmerized by it. The tasty texture, the moist balance and the fragrance seems to explode in my mouth. This little slice of delight is simply perfect. I can’t seem to have enough and before I knew it, I had down 3 slices within minutes.

IMG-20130930-WA0016
Photo: Sweet Potato Pandan Cake. A True Evolution of Tradition Meets Fusion.

This got me curious, I decided to check out the other offerings by The Chaplin’s and I found out that they bake a variety of cakes. I am not exactly a fan of fusion-evolved food but I decided to try out their Sweet Potato Panda Cake. I like pandan cakes & I love sweet potato, but having these 2 together seems odd as I prefer my sweet potato to be swimming in a sugary clear broth.

When the cake gets delivered, I decided to slice up the cake and took a few shots. The contrasting colours of pandan green against bits of orange-colored sweet potato with a nice browny outer soft crust seems like a perfect cake to shoot. And the taste? All I can say is, the Chef had found the perfect balance of having the sweet potato “embedded” in a nice pandan chiffon that surprises the pickiest of taste buds. Yes you heard me, every bite is a surprise. I later found out that The Chaplin’s cakes are healthy treats as they do not use preservatives & they watch the sugar level closely to create delicious healthy cakes.

IMG-20130930-WA0013

I am a photographer & tech reviewer, not a food journalist so do not expect a professional food review on The Chaplin’s from me. However, I would like to share that your next food photography session can now be more meaningful with cakes from The Chaplin’s and there is no need to throw the cakes away after shooting, you can eat it and you will enjoy it.

Ordering details are found below.

Pentax K-3 – A New Marvel

K3

08th October 2013, Singapore – Pentax announce the long-awaited (or should I say anticipated) successor for the K-5/ K-5II series DSLRs. Pentax, famed for their feature-packed DSLRs & reasonable asking price, the new K-3 is no exception. The new Pentax K-3 however was designed and built for a more purposeful objective – Field Use. Taking performance cues from the earlier models, the K-3 inherited all the good stuff like rugged design, full weather sealing, high performance processors and excellent image quality – and more. The K-3’s specifications will shame many other DSLRs in the same class & similar price bracket.

Since “Field Use” was the key objective for the new Pentax K-3, this APS-C DSLR is designed for photographers who does lots of outdoor work and in various climates. Best for the photographer who shoot sports, nature (macro & birding) & events!

Let’s take a quick look at some of the key specifications!

k31

NEW
– New 24mp CMOS Sensor (APS-C)
– New Image Processor (Prime III Engine)
– 27 AF Points (Measured)
– New AF module (Safox 11)
– 8.3 frame per second (fps)
– Dual SD Card slots
– Full Magnesium Body (not alloy)
– Lots of new operation buttons
– 86K RGB Metering Sensor (about 86.4 metering zones)

K32

Retained
Other Key Specifications retained from past successful models
– ISO 51200
– 1/8000 high speed shutter
– Full weather sealing
– 100% view on Viewfinder
– Interval Shooting (but upped to 2000 shots)
– Art Filters (more added)
– Shutter life (improved to 200,000 shots)

k34

From our understanding, the new Pentax K-3 is a totally New camera packed with all the latest technology in digital imaging while retaining all the know-hows and trusted advantages from its older siblings. As mentioned earlier, the specifications on the new Pentax K-3 had surpassed many cameras from other brands of the same class, but at the same price bracket. This is once again very “Pentax”, always giving much more than the competition but asking for a reasonable price and leaving the consumers to decide if they want a “brand” on their hands or a camera that gives them the ability to produce excellent high quality images at a similar price. The K-3 is a True Marvel.

The new Pentax K-3 will be marketed to enthusiasts & amateurs, looking at the overall package, we are very sure many professionals will take interest in this little APS-C monster of some sort. If you are looking for more information about the new Pentax K-3, do visit the “regular tech sites”, this is only an announcement. I will be back with an official review once the local agent send me the review unit.

Stay tuned.

ASIA’S EOS YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER AWARD 2013 ATTRACTS MORE THAN 3,500 ENTRIES FROM SINGAPORE

Indonesian and Malaysia take top honours in highly competitive regional field

17th September 2013, Singapore – The inaugural EOS Young Photographer Award contest was a resounding success, attracting more than 27,000 entries from around Asia, with 3,565 Singaporeans among those vying for the grand prize: An all-expenses paid National Geographic Photography Workshop in the US, plus a Canon EOS 60D DSLR camera with EF-S18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS II Lens.

Themed “A Celebration of Colour”, the EOS Young Photographer Award 2013 was open to aspiring photographers aged 13 to 25, and jointly organised by National Geographic Channel and Canon Singapore Pte Ltd.

Of the thousands of hopefuls – from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand, Hanggi Tyo, 21, from Indonesia emerged as the champion, walking away with the coveted first prize, with her entry, “My Full Colourful Smile”, a photograph taken at the Jember Fashion Carnival Show in Jakarta in December last year.

Tyo’s shot, which depicts a smiling young woman clad in a vibrantly colourful costume, garnered much praise from the judging panel, which included National Geographic photographer, Gabby Salazar.

First runner up was Malaysian Chan Zhi Ying, 22, who walked away with a Canon EOS 650D with EF-S18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS II Lens for her submission entitled “Happy in Red”. The photograph depicts a child splashing in a tub of water while having her bath, conveying a feeling of unbridled happiness and carefree delight.

Twenty-one-year-old Geovani Orlando from Indonesia also impressed the judges with his photo submission, “Paju Jawi From Ranah Minang”, earning him the title of second runner up and a Canon EOS 1100D with EF-S18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS II Lens.

According to Simeon Dawes, SVP Advertising Sales & Partnership of FOX One Stop Media, “Our main intention in organising this competition together with Canon Singapore, was to inspire young people across Asia to take an interest and discover more about the creative art and science of photography, as well as to provide a platform for aspiring photographers to pursue their love and passion for photography.”

He added: “As a channel that inspires people through our work and programmes, we look to nurture talents in the field of creativity – people who will share the same vision of wanting to bring people together and bridging cultures. They say a picture speaks a thousand words. Photographs transcend all cultural, language, background barriers – the same way we aspire to reach out and make a positive difference in the communities in which we operate. In this regard, we are glad to have found a partner in Canon who also share the same vision about nurturing talent hence this initiative turned out to be such a success.”

“We are pleased to have had the opportunity to be a part of this competition, which presents an ideal platform to showcase the best, most colourful and creative photography talents in the region. This type of contest is in line with Canon’s aim to promote the Photography Culture in the Southeast Asian region,” said Mr Hideaki Nishimura, Senior-Director & General Manager, ICP Business Division, Canon Singapore Pte Ltd.

In addition to the three main prizes, the contest also awarded bi-weekly winners for the colour-themed Voter’s Choice Award, held between April 9 to June 3, with an 8GB EOS Memory Drive and National Geographic Channel X Morn Creations Limited Version Shark Backpack each.

Meanwhile, the Grand Voter’s Choice, which was tracked from the beginning of the campaign, was awarded to Saidkhsan from Indonesia. He took home an EOS Camera Bag and National Geographic Photo Book for his submission entitled “Love Story”, depicting two entwined butterflies on a vine.

Other noteworthy entries highlighted by the judges were “Panorama de Shah Mosque” by Shaharyar Hyder, “The Longest Sock” by Firman Maulana, and “Three Yellow Guards” by Danniel Partogi.

Following the overwhelming response and success of this inaugural event, both organisers are now looking forward to kicking-off another photo contest in October 2013. More details will be released nearer the launch date.

Pentax K-50 Meaner than Before

16th September 2013, Singapore – Pentax’s latest release, the K-50 may come as a surprise to many since its predecessor the K-30 was launched barely a year ago. Looking at the specs, it is 90% similar to the K-30 but with a few important tweaks and added improvements & options. On first look, the K-50 had a more purposeful look now as compared to the tougher-looking K-30. The K-30 had won many fans for its prosumer specifications and an entry-level asking price and the K-50 seems to have up the ante against the competition now.

P9140001
Photo: The New Pentax K-50. Shedded the Rugged look from the K-30 but still as mean.

To start, the K-50 had taken the Q Series route by offering buyers 100 colors as a made-to-order option and this, till today, is very Pentax. Remember what the media were speculating when the first white colored K-2000 DSLR was launched? When the White K-X came with more colors and subsequently the K-R, more Pentax were sold in many parts of the world than some other brands! When K-30 arrived with its Prosumer Specs, clearly a winner was on Pentax’s plate and now – the K-50.

P9140002
Photo: The DAL18-55mm Weather Sealed kit lens now comes in matching colors.

For technical in-depth review, please try the internet, here, we are more interested to show you what we have shot from this camera. We took the K-50 out for a night walk this round.

IMGP0743 IMGP0735 IMGP0736 IMGP0737 IMGP0738

In conclusion, the K-50 is clearly the next winner from Pentax. As a Pentax collector (I have a black, blue, red, pink, white & yellow Pentax bodies), I was happy to see the front and rear dial carried over from the K-30 which most basic level DSLRs from other brands do not have.

1003050_10201554281277096_415653840_n
Photo: My Pentax K Mount Collection.

The handling is very similar and it is goody grippy although personally I still prefers the “raw” look on the K-30. Picture quality is way too good to even put it into words comparing the K-50 with older Pentax bodies or cameras of similar price range from other brands.  I can go on forever how good the K-50 is but I will suggest for readers to drop by their dealers and test out the camera yourself. Touching, Using, is Believing.

Olympus EPL-6 – Fast & Quality Photos

15th September 2013, Singapore – Olympus’s latest Pen Lite, the EPL-6 has hit the shelves for a little while since its launch.
Hence by now, there are already tons of reviews available online from the usual review sites & from end users. We decided to have a go and check out the EPL-6 and a review was planned.  Olympus claimed that picture quality from the EPL-6 is equivalent to its more powerful OM-D and it comes with a super Fast AF system so that users can now use the Lite for High-speed focusing and other goodies like built-in time lapse video, interval shooting, 12 Art filters etc.

IMGP0747
Photo: the Olympus EPL-6, probably the only sign that this is the latest model.

Touch AF is available on the EPL-6 allowing users to touch, instant focus and shoot in a fraction of a second – when put to actual use, this is one of the fastest focusing system in the market right now. The 16 megapixel sensor promises “OM-D-ish” superb picture quality. On first look, the EPL-6 looks similar to its predecessor, handling wise, it feels comfortable and ergonomics are well sorted. (i have large hands). 🙂

IMGP0745
Photo: the Olympus EPL-6, attractive little package.

Key Functions:

As usual, we are not going in depth like other “technical heavy” sites. Rather we chose to test out the EPL-6 for a night out – something different from our past Olympus reviews where we usually tested the cams in the day. Below are the photos taken directly from the Olympus EPL-6 with mild editing like cropping, level adjustments and watermarks, everything else is what we got from the camera. Check out the photos below and decide for yourself.

P9140011 P9140012 P9140017 P9140001
P9140002
P9140008

I took a shot from really far and see the following crops – amazingly the EPL-6 performs superbly well at low light and still produce sharp photo!

P9140003 P9140003a P9140003b P9140003c

In conclusion, the Olympus EPL-6 performs excellently well at night! Although I personally felt that the grip can be a little more beefy for a more confident hold, the photos made it up with good noise handling (Most of the photos above were shot at ISO3200 & Above) and the AF, if Olympus calls it fast, I will call it super fast! The touch focus allows accurate focus every time without missing a single shot and the swivel-LCD screen simply completes the EPL-6 package. If a camera performed this well at night, I bet the EPL-6 is a monster-in-disguise by day.

Ed.

Thank you Olympus Imaging Singapore for letting us have the EPL-6 for this weekend!

Erich’s Wuerstelstand – Photographers Alert!

16th September 2013, Singapore – Remember the Sausage stall run by an Austrian Chef along the street at Chinatown? I am sure many of you had bought sausages from this stall when out shooting at Chinatown while doing street photography or shooting there during the festive seasons like CNY or Mid-Autumn festival. Well, you know what? the owner had given up the stall by the road and opted for a stall inside a coffee shop just 100 meters away from the original roadside stall.

10 Tips for Facebook Photographers

7th September 2013, Singapore – Just a little note for Facebook Based Photographers. Consolidated from various forums and websites. I believe there are some truth in the points mentioned below, then again, everyone is different and subjected to various situations as well as individuals.

facebook_like_button_big1

1) When You Post a Photo, Don’t Expect “Likes”.
Many photographers today had developed the addiction to “Likes”. It is as if every time a photo is uploaded, the photographer expects to get instant attention from peers. This corrupts the purpose of posting. Most photographers are encouraged to share their photos so that other more experienced photographers will help to comment and critique so that you know where you can further improve on. Facebook is a platform for sharing, not for collecting “Likes”. Given the traffic on Facebook, many friends may miss your posting too, if they are your friends, they will pop over to your wall to check out your latest offerings. So don’t ask me why I never Like your Facebook Album.

2) Like the Photos, Like the Album
Many times when a photographer uploaded an album, there will be “Likes” on the Album as a whole and not the photos. Chances are, your peers saw your album on the live feed and they simply “Like” without even viewing a single photo in the album. To some, this is just a way of saying “Noted” or simply being cordial without really giving a damn what kind of photos are really inside the album. If you have no time to view a person’s photo, do not “like” the album until you find some time to browse through the photos.
Even if you are doing this as an encouragement to the photographer, in the long run, this is an insult rather than encouragement. So be genuine, be real, like the photos before you hit the “Like” button on the Album – If the photos really commands a “Like” in the first place.

3) Leaves Comments Objectively
Comments on any photo posted serves as an important lesson for many budding photographers. So critique the photo objectively so that the receiving person will take note of the mistake(s) committed and avoid heading down the same line again. Remember, most photographers has pride, this is something that you, me & professional photographers will understand. So use your words sensibly and watch out for the soft spot of a photographer. Here’s an example; “You should have corrected your horizon axis before you edit other aspect of the photo.” Such direct comments are easily understood by the receiving person but as easily misunderstood as insult. Personally, I will send a private message to the person and uses the exact same words as above and the effects are dramatically & positively different.

4) Ask Permission
Photos are owned by the respective photographers. If you wish to use anyone’s photo for any use – be it personal, charity, porn or commercial, it is common sense to first ask for the permission to use a photo by someone else. In another scenario, if a photographer friend can’t seem to understand what were you trying to share, you saved the photo & edited for the person and reposted the edited photo and tag the person – never do this unless this is done in private. This usually hurts the photographer although with good intentions, we are handling humans here, no matter how humble a person is, there will always be pride. First ask for permission privately if you can show the person by editing his/her photo, if the person agrees to let you do, then do it and share it privately with the person. The person will be very appreciative of your sharing and teachings this way.

5) Do Not Compare
I have came across many instances where photographers were comparing photos of other photographers taken in a similar fashion or at a similar location. My advice is, do not compare. As photographers, by comparing, someone has to be better than the other and in this sense, if you are on the comparison table, how will you feel you are of the lower rating? Everyone has a certain understanding or rating, but there is no need to publicly air it. Even comparisons can be really unfair when photography is the subject. 2 photographers may have visited the same location during a different time of the day, different season of the year, using different equipments, etc. So how does that make a fair comparison? Take reference from other photographers, not comparisons.

6) Be Humble
Never boast your achievements on Facebook. Everyone was once a beginner. But there are many routes to becoming a semi-pro or a professional photographer. Do not be overly boastful of your achievements online because likely another photographer will overtake you in no time. Such is the harsh reality of this industry. Instead, learn to be humble, keep learning and talk to people from all levels in the industry to understand more, learn more and make many friends. Always be prepared to listen to new ideas, new shooting techniques, be prepared to adapt to new systems, new regulations & new platform. This way, eating the humble pie is the real short cut to becoming a professional photographer. Being boastful will likely ends you up in 2 situations – 1) Your constant boasting are the map to success for others which many of your peers will adapt to your success plan and made your plan as their success plan too. There is no secret, you boasted all out yourself on Facebook right? 2) You may gain fans now at the peak of your fame, once your 15 minutes of fame is over, you are next to nothing and you get forgotten faster than people can remember you. Don’t be a Facebook hero, be a humble photographer.

7) Gear Heads
As a professional photographer, gears & equipment are our working tools. This is especially important to us because our livelihood depended on these gears and good gears are not cheap. At most times, the professionals don’t even want to let you know what they are using for their commercial assignments. On Facebook, it is a different world,  there will always be gear heads among your peers that are more interested in what you are using rather than what you are shooting, asking about views on certain equipments all day without really buying, or keep asking questions that are calculated and designed in such a way that they can carry on the conversation with many opportunity to talk about their prized & latest equipment. Avoid online conversations or Facebook threads with such a person before it gets ugly, gear is important, but not everything, skill is. If you are a seasoned photographer and mature enough, you understand this, Gear talks are for beginners to learn, for amateurs to show off, for semi-pros to find out the market rate and an entertainment for the professionals. This is my personal view so don’t flame me.

8) Photo QC
Not every photo shot by you must be uploaded to Facebook. This is especially for those who believe in uploading everything from their memory card in whole. Take a moment and go through the photos and delete those photos that are blur, wrongly exposed, no storyline, no meaning or simply snapshots that are not worth a 2nd look. By posting everything, you are just opening up yourself for target practice. People may (will) judge you for the “poor standards” based on the bad photos although there may be as many good photos too. Clicking on photos on Facebook can be irritating if after 20 clicks, you are still seeing the same subject in the same frame – you know what I mean.

9) Fan Wars
Now, every online discussion-enabled sites like forums has such a war broke out at least once or every now & then. The constant bragging of your base system brand on Facebook is not going to help you become friends with photographers who are using a different system as you. Take a moment and ponder, will anyone spent thousands of dollars only to complain that their system sucks? Likely they will be defending their choice of system fiercely with another person who invested in a different system and this eventually erupts to an online war. Friends & Fans will start taking sides and this goes on forever, fun? I call this childish. Every system has its Pros & Cons, and within systems, there are high-end range-topping models, mid-rangers and entry-level models. In the photography world, you get what you paid for. It’s just that simple. So the next time you want to post something about your system, think again, is it necessary?

When-You-Check-In-on-Facebook

10) Facebook Check-Ins
As a photography instructor, I check-in on Facebook at every class location to allow my students to locate me or to notify them that I’ve already reached. Other times, it is also for my fellow photographers to know my location so in case of emergency, it will be easy to pin-point my exact location should evacuation or medical help is required. But most of my fellow photographers know that I do not check-in on Facebook when I am doing commercial assignments. Why? For a simple reason, I do not see the need to tell people or announce to the world (at least your Facebook friends) you have been given a job. So it is not too difficult for anyone to just browse a photographer’s Facebook Wall and sum up how miserable it is to have just “3 jobs per month”. From my understanding, real photographers are a pretty secretive lot (me included), they do not really want others to know how many jobs they are doing (or earning). And this is pretty much the standard protocols among the pros. Disagree if you wish, at least the fellow pros around me are living by this mandate.

Facebook or any other online media is a Double-edged sword. You can make it work for you as well as kill yourself. If you are a complain King or Queen, it is normal for one to post rants about a bad day on their Facebook wall status – But do watch what you are ranting about. The online world is a very small and connected dimension. Everyone seems to know everyone and to make contact, it is just a click away.
