Day 3 (D) : Early wake up for the Fluvial procession at Mactan Bridge. Roam through the slum area and visit Guitar Factory. Back to Cebu for street photography at Lapu lapu street. Overnight at Cebu

Day 4 () : Witness the Sinulog Parade for full day where Cebu city is on festival from morning to evening. Overnight at Cebu

Day 5 (L/D) : Relax the day with boat charter for island hopping at Lapu lapu. Stop for snorkelling at Cebu strait, and visit Caohagan island. Seafood dinner at floating restaurant. Overnight at Cebu

Day 6 (L) : Early wake up for ferry to Bohol island. Visit Baclayon Church, Chocolate Hill, Tarsier Wildlife Sanctuary, Bolo making industries, hanging Bridge. Back to Cebu in the evening. Overnight at Cebu   Day 7 : Check out and depart to Cebu Airport.

	Allan Lee, Accredited Instructor. A Commercial Photographer & P.A. Certified Trainer for Photography resulting from his Work Combination of Outdoor Media, Advertising Media, Photojournalist, Web Editor, Writer/ Contributor to Media Trade Magazines & Travel Publications. His work is regularly published by newspapers, magazines & online by various media. Allan’s reviews, photos & articles relating to Camera & Lenses have received attention & fine accolades from camera brands. Allan does a variety of photography work, from weddings to products for advertisement use, but prefers macro & infrared landscape photography when he is on leisure mode. Allan conducts photography classes on Macro, Studio Lights, Product Photography & Gear Maintenance regularly at various schools but prefers to call PSS “Home”.
	Alvinn Lim, Accredited Instructor. Alvinn Lim developed an interest in photography at a very young age. Starting with a simple manual 35mm SLR camera and a book on basic photography, he self-taught the basic techniques of photography through exploration and pure passion 20 years ago. After completing his national service, Alvinn entered the workforce as a full-time photographer. Having 16 years of photography experiences with several renowned companies specializing in different aspects of photography; Alvinn is well-established in this field. With his experience and expertise and his firm belief in having more room for creativity, he eventually started his own photography business “EYERED WORKS”. Alvinn Lim does mainly commercial, advertising and editorial work, which could be found in many leading publications.
	Goh Kim Hui, Accredited Instructor. Goh Kim Hui is a professional photographer specializes in Commercial Photography. With more than 30 years of experience, he has received recognition from various international bodies. In year 2000, he received the Honorary Excellent Distinction from the International Federation of Photographic Art for his outstanding contributions in Photography. His first solo exhibition “Sky is not a Limit” was held in year 2000 at Selegie Arts Centre, describing the 5 elements in the nature with the “Yin and Yang” philosophy. Some of his works were collected by overseas museum and private collectors. His works were exhibited and published in local and overseas media, many works had won awards in local and international competitions.
	Hui Man Yan, Accredited Instructor. Though more than qualified to turn professional years ago, Hui has chosen to remain in the amateur. His reason is that he gets greater satisfactions shooting subjects whom he likes rather than subjects which the client wants if he has to shoot for a living. And he claims that he is still “learning”, so he cannot consider professional. “I don’t want to be restricted by commercial considerations.” He believes to take a good picture, the camera is a helping tool, the man behind the camera is important. A photographer must learn all the time, and change his style in small ways from time to time, or his craft will stagnate. Not one to keep his trade secrets to himself, Hui immerses himself in educating the young minds of Singapore in photography. These days, Hui passes on his skills and knowledge to others and promotes photography as a hobby in club and school by giving talks and teaching. He has been teaching his popular Advanced Travel Photography course and An Eye for Creativity course at The Photographic Society of Singapore since 1998.
	Richard Seah, Accredited Instructor. Richard pursued photography since the mid-1970s, a major milestone came in November 2007 when he finally bought a digital camera, a Fujifilm S5 Pro that he still uses today. Richard’s signature style is “uptight” – short for “close-up / tight-cropping.” He shoots predominantly with an 80-400 zoom lens (previously 75-300), but is equally comfortable with wide, super-wide and fisheye lenses. Richard is known for his unconventional choice of subjects. The most unusual subject is hands and Richard has self-published a book titled Photographs of Hands. He has since shifted focus to the legs. In 2006, Richard was featured in Asian Photography magazine in an article headlined, Spiritual photographer – a reference to another of his focus areas, prayer. He has also done a lot of night, low light and stage photography. He is a regular shooter at The Esplanade Outdoor Theatre and Concourse and has self-published a book titled Song and Dance – Portraits from the Esplanade. Richard’s images tend towards abstraction and his compositions have been described as “daring” – as he is not one who is afraid of breaking rules. His current explorations include multiple exposures and blurs, as well as ultra-high key, almost pure white, imagery – achieved in camera and with processing software.
	Thomas Tham Joo Kit, Accredited Instructor. As a humanitarian, photographer and a teacher in photography, Thomas aims to bring about awareness and social responsibility in his photography works and present to the world. He believes that each of us can do our part in making this world a better place. Photography is a medium for Thomas to capture the moment of thoughts, action, emotional states and spiritual states of the subjects. Soulfulness is what Thomas looking for in each photo captured, whether it is reportage or for the purpose of art, he let the subjects’ ‘talk’ about their experience, concerns and freely expressing their emotional states. It is said that the eyes are the windows of our souls. And in the eyes of Thomas’, the truth is starkly revealed.

2013 Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A)

17th July 2013, Singapore – It gives me great pleasure to be given the opportunity to review the 2013 Art Series Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A). Way before this lens reached our shores, there’s already a few websites posting incredible reviews and raves about this lens. I was so looking forward to it and when the lens was issued to me last week, I brought it out for a shoot over 2 days and came back with astounding results.

For those new to this site, if you are looking for technical reviews, please pop over to other sites that give you very in-depth reviews on the lens itself, over here, we are only concerned about how does the lens performed, the built quality and everything layman.

First Impression – living up to the new product lines (Art, Contemporary & Sports) under Sigma’s Global Vision, this lens was made to impress. Made with the new Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) like its earlier brethrens, this is one mean lens. It feels solid to the hand and when I mount it on my Canon EOS 600D, the lens feels at home although I feel that the weight of the lens (810gm) had the camera front-heavy which might cause a little stress on the lens mount. But this is negligible since Canon’s lens mount are solid metal alloys that can withstand the use of heavy lenses.

The finishing on the lens barrel again did not disappoint. If you have read my earlier reviews on the new line of Sigma lenses, you will remember me making reference to Carl Zesis & Leica. The new Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 carries on the new design in line with the updated product identity. For the sake of direct comparison, the New Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 feels like an EF24-70mm F2.8L USM, just lighter and the size is very similar to the Canon EF35mm F1.4L USM. The smooth finishing, cool to the user’s touch and the ergonomics for handling are simply excellent and anyone who had touched it will want to use it. Personally, if blindfolded, I will imagine myself to be touching the Leica 75mm F/2 Summicron APSH – exaggerating? Not, certainly not. The actual size of the New Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 is 78mm diameter x 121mm length, not too big, not too small and will fit most camera bags.

Using it – on the field, the lens performed exceptionally well. The hurricane-fast focusing are spot on accurately for 99% of my shots thanks to the company’s proven Hypersonic Motor (HSM) which can be seen on most Sigma’s better or Pro lenses. The focusing is so quiet on the lens that at some moments, I thought I had switched the lens to Manual Focus only to realized that the lens had already locked its focus – amazing! The internal focusing system which contributed to the fast & silent focusing is another plus. This means lesser entry points for unwanted dusts and the use of adjustable filters will be an ease.

Internally, more surprises are in store. This 9-Blader APS-C Monster of a lens are made up of 17 elements in 12 groups, 5 SLD glass elements, 4 glass-molded aspherical elements to ensure that you get superb image from this lens across all focal length. Since the new Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 were made as a “DC” (DG for Full Frame), it has the same focal range equivalent of 27mm to 52.5mm (28.8mm to 56mm on Canon APSC Bodies) which is pretty much useable for lots of photographic applications. The constant F1.8 will behave like a F2.8 on Full Frame cameras due to the smaller sensors of the APSC bodies – but there isn’t much to complain either given that the New Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 is currently the world’s First & Only F1.8 Zoom lens. For the record, many manufacturers had once attempted to create such a lens but none succeeded. Sigma took the R&D all the way and successfully made the new 18-35mm F1.8 – consider it as a feat.

At F4, the lens still produce beautiful bokeh and the subject did not suffer any detail lost, do see the next photo with a tighter crop.

Amazing sharpness even after cropping 40% off the original photo. Can you imagine what kind of photo you might get if the aperture is stopped to F8?

At launch, the New Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A) will be produced in Canon EF-mount, Nikon F-mount & Sigma SA-mount. (with other mounts to be announced later) This is the 5th new lens announced by Sigma under the New Sigma Global Vision line after the mighty Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM (A), the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC OS HSM (C), the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM (S) & Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC HSM (A). Till date, all the new releases had been a winner in their respective classes & categories of DSLR lenses.

Buying the new Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A) is the equivalent of buying a few prime lenses. I will take cues from the focal length stops of 18mm, 20mm, 24mm, 28mm & 35mm – means if you buy the new Sigma 18-35mm F1.8, you are buying 5 x F1.8 primes lenses. Right, some of you Gear Heads will argue that prime lenses will still be sharper than a zoom lens – well, don’t speak too soon till you try out the lens. Sigma do not just throw any lens into the market, they made them.

11th July 2013, Singapore – ourshutterjourney.com recently ran a survey questionaire for a better understanding of the readers, subscribers, followers of this site (View Here). We were overwhelmed by the 1107 email entries (we were really expecting 500+) and it took 4 volunteers to sort out all the entries and answers over 2 days. While some entries gave us really interesting answers (that I almost fell of my chair), many took the effort to reply.

Photography Khaki Group is one group that aims to provide a platform for photographers at all levels, to display their works to share/learn/contribute and above all, to progress together in the art of photography. The group was founded by Alex and Anthony Lim, both competent photographers in their own rights.

Photography Khaki was setup with the goal of bringing people together, be it photographers, models, makeup artistes or even people who have not even picked up the hobby! The group wants a platform where everyone can freely share their services and learn from each other in a family-oriented style where there are no discrimination, no sarcasm and just pure love for the art of photography!

Photography Khaki excels in many areas of photography. Looking at the group’s FB page, there are so many different photos from different genres being posted each day – from macro photos, to landscape photos, to food photography & many others. And from the posted photos, the quality and standard of every photos shared are excellent!

The group had made significant impact to the members in many ways. With a group, members have a place where they can chat with the others members, post questions and read about tips and tricks that have been posted by other members – more of a community sharing. It does not end there, members have a platform where they can showcase their photos and receive critiques from other members, and from there, everyone improves along the way and strive (together) for greater heights in photography.

An Interview with the Founders of Photography Khaki Group

Ed: How does photography inspires the founders?

PK: Photography is an art form that inspires me to no end especially when I manage to capture that special moment and preserve that in history.

Ed: How does managing a photo group feels? Any ups & downs?

PK: Managing any groups is never easy, you will definitely encounter both ups and downs. But at the end of the day, when you see your group grow, when you see everyone working together to achieve a common dream, that, no matter how tough or how bad it was, it’s worth every while!

Ed: How frequently does the group meet up and is there other activity that had
been organized that is non-photography related? Like social events?

PK: We try to organize frequent meet ups between members in the form of outings, gatherings and photo shoots. While most of the events organized have been photography related. We still manage to bond rather well and from there grow further as a group. We will definitely want to organize social events and outings such as KTV sessions, makan sessions and such, so keep a look out for our event invite!

Ed: In your view, what is the most important element in photography?

PK: Light light light! This cannot be emphasized enough. Photography is all about capturing your subjects with light. Learn about the different natural lightings available. Mornings and early evenings are called the golden hours for photographers because the light provided by Mother Nature is perfect for capturing photos. Noon time typically provides very harsh lightings which will cause your photos to overexpose.

Ed: In the diversified and sometimes complicated circle of photography, have you met good people as well as bad people?

PK: There are all sorts of people in this complicated and more often than not, competitive environment. While good people are those who typically manage to share a bond with us and learn and grow together, people who have shown forms of bad attitude have been separated. PK: A group of passionate photographers aiming to grow together as one

Ed: Is there any Allied photography group that your group associates with?
Any rival groups?

PK: We firmly believe that making friends is more worthwhile than making enemies or rivals. Should anyone feel that we are a threat, we would gladly distance ourselves away from whoever uncomfortable with us! We want to be known as a gracious photographic society and we will work hard to ensure that this is realized!

Ed: Is there a person/ group that inspires your group?

PK: None in particular, but the group will appreciate anyone that can help each other without reservations and will inspires us, and teaches us. We believe that no matter what we do, we are here to learn.

Ed: What visions & dreams do you have for your photo group?
PK: We hope that one day, all photographic groups will come together as one, as friends and share what we have in common & even differences with each other!

Started photography in 2007 to help his brother (Anthony Lim), to take his wedding photos using the Canon S5IS.
Since then, Alex had ventured into portraitures, events, flower shots, family shoots, and travel photography and others!

Self taught, Alex bought his first DSLR, a Canon 5DMKIII and at the same time, started his photography Facebook page called Pimodi (Picture-Modifier) and also Photography Khaki Facebook Group to know more friends who share the passion of photography. Formed for about 6 months, Photography Khaki Facebook Group has grown from a few members to the current numbers of almost 1500 members. Alex hope that the group will continue to grow larger so that the group can have a larger member base and everyone can share, contribute and learn from each other.

Anthony first stepped into photography about one and a half years ago, influenced by a group of Nikon users. Landscape photography has always been his interest and he have spent countless hours shooting and learning the steps of post processing and perfecting his landscape photos.. Throughout his photographic journey, Anthony has learned and improved with the help of the group members and he hope to continuously improve and produce photos of different perspective of the place he calls home!

She started photography a few years back. Catherine calls photography “the stage” whereby she can share how photography allows her to capture every aspect of her learning journey in photography. Every photos shot by her simply reminds her of every minute scenes, small moments and experiences that people might have forgotten. Ghoom Monastery and Tibetan refugee camp

– Darjeeling tea plantation with spectacular views of the Mount Kanchenjunga, world 3rd highest mountain

– Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the 2nd railway declared as UNESCO World Heritage site

– Off beaten experience with pre WWII four wheel drive and trekking from Darjeeling to Sandakfu

– Visit Meghma villages, and run a minor charity program to the students

– Sandakfu at 3780m, the highest peak in the state of West Bengal. Four of five highest peaks in the world (Everest, Kanchendzonga, Lhotse and Makalu) can be seen.

Itinerary

Day 1 (D) : Depart from Changi Aiport, arrive New Delhi early in next morning. Connect with local flights to Bagdroga, transfer to Darjeeling, welcome dinner. Overnight at Darjeeling.

Day 2 (B) : Sunrise shot and whole day explore Darjeeling, include Ghoom Monastery, Tibetan refugee camp, tea plantation, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Overnight at Darjeeling.

Day 3 (B/L/D) : Drive to Maneybhanjang, a small village at the India-Nepal border. Start trekking to Meghma village, and run a small charity donation program for the school kids. Continue journey with four wheel drive to Tumling. Overnight at Tumling.

Day 4 (B/L/D) : Continue the four wheel drive with altitude increase by 1635m, with several photography stops. Overnight at Sandakfu.

Day 5 (B/L/D) : Explore Sandakfu and its surroundings with beautiful view of Kanchendzonga and Everest range. Overnight at Sandakfu.

Day 6 (B) : Heading downhill and drive to Mirik, visit Chitre and Samendu Lake. Overnight at Mirik.

Day 7 (B/L/D) : Visit Makaibari tea garden, tea factory. Overnight at Makaibari homestay.

Winter Wonderland Photography – Inner Mongolia and Bashang, China

– Winter landscape at Wulanbutong grassland

Itinerary

Day 1 (D) : Depart from Changi Aiport, arrive Beijing in the noon, drive (2 hour) to Miyun or Luanping county and overnight at the county.

Day 2 (B/L/D) : Drive to Bashang (6 hour) with stopover for scenery of winter grassland, shepherd return home, sunset. Overnight at Bashang.

ToyArt by the Bay Photo Competition WINNERS!

25th June 2013, Singapore – ourshutterjourney.com recently collaborated with Cathay Photo Store Pte Ltd for “ToyArt by the Bay” photo competition. We received a total of 69 entries from 26 participants out of 32 attendees. The judges commented: “The (photo) standard of this competition is very high and does not seems like an amateur photography group. Most of the photos are beyond semi-pro standard.”

Which is very true as I am one of the judges for the final judging held at Cathay Photo Store Pte Ltd. The entries are excellent and trust me, this is a hard competition to judge as every photo seems like a Winning photo! But reality is, we really have no choice but to go through the entries over and over again and through 2 rounds of eliminations before we are down to the last 18 photos for the 9 prizes! Featured Photography Group – West Shooterz

21st June 2013, Singapore – This is the 3^rd featured article from the special photography group series that we will be running for this month.
For this week, we are going west!! West Shooterz is the name!

West Shooterz is a pretty “new” photographic group in Singapore dedicated to all photography enthusiasts, mainly made up of people with a broad range of skills and varying knowledge levels. Ranging from the “keen to learn” novice, to the full-time professional, West Shooterz are united by their common love of photography. Founded in 2008 with a handful of founding members, today West Shooterz is a 370+ strong photography group. (Correct at press time)

Pioneered by a group of photographers, they are Mr Larry Haydn, Mr Peter Yeo, Mr Skyimage U’sov, Mr Jackie Num, Mr Michael Neo, Mr Alvin Gay, Miss Dayana Mohamad & Mr Patrick Tay.

West Shooterz was initially formed and named for a very simple but meaningful reason – the pioneering members are all residents from the constituencies in the west zone of Singapore, from Jurong, Clementi and Bukit Batok, and other western zones of Singapore.

The group never sticks to a specific genre, the group is always exploring and expanding the possibilities of photography at different levels.
That, in a way had inspired the members to move on from 1 genre to another and through the process, many had found their calling (to certain genres) and found their directions in the complicated world of photography. That does not end there. Members also find the sharing by the other members to be very helpful, that actually created a platform where members learn from another member – just like “community learning”.

Ed: How does photography inspires the founders?

WS: We get really inspired by seeing the works of others (members) and the team spirit that we had built along the way. It is great that we are all “like-minded” people and we all found each other at West Shooterz.

Ed: How does managing a photo group feels? Any ups & downs?

WS: Not exactly Ups or any Downs. Managing West Shooterz gives all of us a satisfaction – this feels better than monetory gains; especially with the people/photogs that we had met. Awesome bunch of people.

Ed: How frequently does the group meet up and is there other activity that had
been organized that is non-photography related? Like social events?

WS: We make an effort to meet up at least once a month to do some non-photography related outing such as TCSS and dinner.
And also, West Shooterz started a “tradition” that we have our Annual Re-union Dinner for all the members and their families just after every CNY.

Ed: In your view, what is the most important element in photography?

WS: In our views, we feel that the willingness to learn and explore beats every other factoring reasons to be an important element of photography. In short, the attitude.

Ed: In the diversified and sometimes complicated circle of photography, have you met good people as well as bad people?

WS: We had met tons of good people. So far, we were lucky enough to not meeting any BAD people.
