Ourshutterjourney.com Appreciation Giveaway Winners Announced!

17th August 2013, Singapore – Our Appreciation Giveaway is probably our best way to remind ourselves why ourshutterjourney.com was started in the first place. Started as a meeting place for photographers from all walks of life, the group had since bloomed into a full service portal serving photographers from every level, locally & internationally as a resource site, a buying guide, a layman review site, a news site for photography related news and much more. Supported by a comprehensive group of photographic dealers and camera brands, we hope to add value to you – as our reader, our member, our follower, our subscriber or our supporter – we will always be there for you!

Impacting people’s lives through photography is something which we are pretty proud of – at least to us, that is our little “recognition” that our effort had not gone to waste. Even if it is just one last person that still sticks with us, we will go on, and go on. For the 1st Giveaway, we had asked Everyone how ourshutterjourney.com had impacted their photography journey. At the tick of midnight (17th August 2013, 00.00hrs) we have a total of 43 entries, each sharing about their photography journey. Trust me, it is tough to choose the best one so I have decided to give 3 Cameras away instead of 1. Reading each and every story submitted, I cannot help but feeling very touched. It is like we had set out to achieve a goal and we had reached it. Thanks to Each & Every Single of You.

The below 3 Winning Submissions were selected from a total of 43 entries.

A Journey like No OtherKim Tan
Kim
Photo: Kim Tan (left) with her Friend Stella.

My photographic journey started with a road project by ourshutterjourney.com called “Project Smiles 100” back in 2010.
I was approached by Shutter Journey’s photographer, Allan Lee, to participate in that project. All I need to do was smile at his camera. I started thinking why he did that project for and when I realized he was trying to collect 100 Pairs of Smiles from Strangers – it roused my curiosity. I thought that was really meaningful as all he did was to make 100 pairs of random strangers smile! And it wasn’t even a paid project I later found out. All he wanted was to bring smiles to strangers that he don’t even know! And he succeeded with nothing but just his camera!

It did not end there. My photography journey continued when both me & my hubby decided to hire Shutter Journey’s photographers for our wedding day. It was then that I was officially introduced to the world from a different perspective.
By looking through a viewfinder, it enables me to look at things in details which, in our fast paced society have often overlooked. Recalling the first time I picked up my DSLR, it was both nightmarish and exciting at the same time as there was so much information to absorb & to learn. There are just so many things I wanted to capture with my camera. With the guidance from many members of the group, I have gained countless knowledge and had created many wonderful memories ever since. I love a good challenge, having a collector’s item rocks!

Editor: Kim, thank you for being such a good client, good student, good friend & a good supporter! Thank you for giving us more reasons to spur on in what we believe in.
Enjoy Your Pentax ESPIO 115M Gold Edition!

My Shutter Journey – Rain or Shine – Dyan Tjhia
Dyan
Picture: Dyan in Person.

I will always remember August 2012, as that was the very first time I heard about ourshutterjourney.com (then Shutter Journey Singapore) and I decided to join their zoo outing at that time. I am glad I made that decision till today. Since then, I have been a regular participant in almost all their outings and events. Why?
Through ourshutterjourney.com I’ve met lots of wonderful people which eventually became close friends and it’s really a great feeling to connect with like-minded people of the same interest. Joining ourshutterjourney.com has also allowed me to progress photography at a faster pace – especially through ourshutterjourney.com’s outings, which is organized regularly thus also encouraged me constantly to practice & shoot more. It also created a challenge to myself to capture better picture after picture.

I’m very thankful for the Founders of ourshutterjourney.com (Allan and Ling) who unselfishly dedicate their time, energy, and resources by organizing the outings and sharing their knowledge in photography freely among the group.

Rain or shine, thunderstorm or a scorching hot day, SJS outings are always fun. Whether it’s visiting new places together, learning something new together, meeting new friends together, or just sharing a good laugh together with familiar faces,
we always bring back with us a wonderful experience, a great photographic journey that are beyond words. I really love photography and I love film photography too!

Editor: Dyan, it is my honor to have a good apprentice & a great friend like you! Thank you for sharing and we hope that we can create more photographic memories for you through our events & programs.
Enjoy Your Pentax ESPIO 105S!

The Journey for Everyone – Ramesh Ramakrishnan
ram
Picture: Ramesh R.

Not exactly a regular, but I have had a few good journeys with ourshutterjourney.com’s organized walkabouts, talks and events. The few main reasons that I enjoy with this group are; it is a no-fuss, speak-direct and straight-shooting photography group. Another great point of the group has to be the leadership of the group seniors – excellent.

The Shutter Journey portal has many gear reviews, ideas and goodies for enthusiasts –  for young and old and the Editor/ Founder freely speaks his mind about alternate and chic brands and like all successful ventures, it is relentlessly pursuing to grow and build a happy shooting future without just sucking up to popular myths. As for the closing line, well I still shoot film these days and I am always a film aficionado (and don’t have a Pentax!) !

Editor: Ramesh, Thank you for your interesting note which summarized quite a few key elements of ourshutterjourney.com! Short & Sweet indeed! Thank you for your support!
Enjoy Your Pentax ESPIO 120SW!

Special Feature: Patrick Poh, Professional Underwater Photographer

Me
Photo: Patrick Poh, Professional Underwater Photographer & Owner of Express-Oh Photography.

7th August 2013, Singapore – While half the world’s photographers are shooting “regular commercial” assignments, there are other photographers that ventures to great heights or into the depths. And more often than not, the latter group are the very niche and specialized photographers that does what the majority of us (me included) will not even think of doing.

Among my circle of professional photographers, there’s a name that had somewhat became an “industry-household” name whenever underwater photography is mentioned. No, I am not talking about shooting corals out in the sea or hunting down rare marine fishes, I am referring to shooting underwater portraits. He is none other than Patrick Poh, a (really famous) professional underwater photographer. Since Patrick is my personal friend, I will not settle for anything if he refuses to be interviewed. As expected, I got my interview.

Tioman
Picture: Photo by Patrick Poh, shot at Tioman Island.

Patrick started photography at a rather young age. While his then teenage counterparts are painting the town red and hanging out in arcades, Patrick choses to explore photography. He started his illustrious career “playing” with SLRs between 1996 to 1999 and as a student then, film photography was considered too expensive for a school boy so he did not really take it seriously but more of just learning and experimenting.

His genre calling came when Patrick discovered that he has a penchant for water. He shoots near water and soon, underwater. The process of learning saw Patrick completely destroyed 3 SLRs in the saltiest of sea water. That didn’t stop him at all – 3 SLRs during those yesteryears costs a lot of money! He persevered on and finally when the digital era dawn upon Patrick, he is already a master in this craft.

Known for his artistic underwater portraits, Patrick creates beautiful unreal renditions of people in a formless environment. Similar to a weightless environment and with the invisible flow of underwater currents which is totally beyond his control, Patrick had made the “uncontrolled environment” seems like a directed open studio – in any water. Although Patrick also does a bit of other jobs like wedding-related assignments, conducts classes & shoot what most of us shoot – he does them well, as expected from an accomplished professional, although Patrick still prefers to be inside the water.

Singapore
Picture: Photo by Patrick Poh, shot in Singapore.

Before anyone of you starts to dump your equipment into the water, Patrick had shared with me that shooting underwater is easily a hundred times more difficult than a regular shoot on dry land. But why Patrick chose water? You see, he had done almost everything that a commercial photographer had done before – and the monotonous regularity of shooting angles, poses, lighting arrangements or even shooting locations got into him. He wants to continue creating exciting photos which is getting harder by the day as he had tried experimenting (almost) everything. In short, he got really bored and decided that regular photography jobs are not what he really wanted to specializes in.

In water, it’s a completely new environment. New inspirations, new challenges, new equipment and according to Patrick, it is also a relatively new industry. He calls it “unchartered territory” filled with surprises and possible dangers especially when shooting out in the open sea.

palawan
Picture: Photo by Patrick Poh, shot at Palawan, Philippines.

When asked about his source of inspirations, Patrick shared that he is a keen follower of Zena Holloway when he started shooting underwater. Zena is in fact, one of the top underwater photographer in the USA. He draws inspirations from Zena’s incredible works and he seeks to learn and improvised from there. As Patrick matures gradually in this area, he started to draw inspirations from the rain. When he told me this, I was puzzled but why the rain?

“Most of my inspirations came from the rain. Have you ever seen how light bends and those reflections on the window after and during the rain? I’d always imagined a little fairy swimming in those droplets.” said Patrick.

And of course, the equipment used for underwater photographer is far more complicated than what we use on land. Patricks uses mainly Ikelite housings and strobes and if you are seasoned photographer and know those brands, you can roughly guess what kind of costs we are talking about here.

A Canon user, Patrick shoots mainly with Canon’s 5D series cameras and an arsenal of Canon’s “L” lenses. But he shared that recently, he had started moving towards Sigma brand lenses for speed and sharpness.  Patrick used the “Price to Performance” ratio as a guide. The new Sigma lenses outperformed what he had been using in terms of speed, sharpness and in some cases colour. Patrick also added that for Sigma’s asking price for professional level of performance, deciding on which brand of lenses to invest becomes a “no brainer”.

“When shooting underwater, when the underwater current is in your favour, the pose is right, light is right, you need to have the right equipment to be able to capture that moment in the water as the very same moment will not happen again. Not in water. So speed is my main concern here, sharpness too is equally important, you cannot sharpen photos shot in the water like we did on land. Sigma’s recent releases (lenses) met my operational needs.” added Patrick.

When asked if he has any equipment on his wish list now, he shared that; “Technology for better pictures is always evolving. What is desired today will be superseded tomorrow.” That is wise and sound advice to many of us here.

Caspalay
Picture: Photo by Patrick Poh.

And there are more;

“Pictures speaks for itself. Basically it is just using the right equipment for me for the job. If the equipment does the job to my expectations, why not? It is not as if Sigma is a bad brand in itself either! I said Sigma because that is the only other 3rd party lens I have, the other being older mount Rollei and Vivitar which I use for film.”

OK, next my standard interview question, I asked Patrick if he is not a photographer, what would he be doing for a living. Without hesitation, he replied “Videographer”.
And before I round up the interview I got Patrick to share some tips for our readers & people who wish to explore into professional photography?

“Get the basics right first before even attempting to be ‘artistic’. Focus on base skill to form the proper foundation to understanding more advance techniques/terminologies and interpreting styles.”

– Any advice to beginners?

“Shoot and REVIEW more. Write a log or something WHY you like some of your photos and WHY you discard the others. Overtime, you will see your improvement. “

Behind the scenes

Thank you Patrick for granting me this interview and shareing with our readers your insights and tips.
Hope the readers can be inspired and picked up all your precious tips!

Special Feature: T.S. Sim, Pentax Professional Photographer

Me by Jimmy
Photo: TS Sim, Pentax Professional Photographer.

A couple of years ago, someone once said to me that trial & error can make or break a photographer’s career. Back then, I did not really understand what that means until many years later after I got much deeper into the photography industry and probably staying long enough to experience it myself. This is a learning path taken by many in the industry and some live by this mandate till today. I came to know one such professional photographer recently – a very successful one to be exact.

Master Sim Tiak Siew – better known as TS Sim by the photography industry and professional circle, is one such example. Master Sim started photography in 1995 upon his graduation from NAFA. It all happened when he was asked to do a makeover shoot for a hair salon. According to him, it did not require much skills from him then but rather, it gave him a new platform to communicate with people and by doing that, he built his confidence for the long photography career ahead in years to come. And through some trials & errors, he explored many shooting techniques and he even learned and gained a deep understanding of hair styling and makeup.

He left a year later and joined a publisher whom published Marie Claire, The Peak and few other magazines. Sim shared that since he never started in photography with any professional studio, operationally he faced tons of difficulties as he had to figure out (all by himself) – all the technical aspects of photography which he was never taught professionally by anyone. And as fate has it, it is also due to this very reason that everything that Sim learned, he learned it from all the mistakes he made through these “on-the-job-experimentations”.

“There is no better way to learn something than to learn through the mistakes you made”,
Sim added.

People - Chef Chris

When asked about his area of photography expertise, Sim shared that he does not specialize in any genre as an in-house photographer, Sim was required to shoot portraits, fashion, beauty, products, interior, food and even events! In short, everything! Sim stayed on in the publishing industry as an in-house photographer for a span of 8 years until he decided to start sim4nee photography in year 2003. He later shared with me about his love for shooting people – which explains why portraits and fashion is what Sim does these days.

Sim look for inspirations from everything around him. Culture, color, music, movie or even certain event (or rather story) would inspire him to transform his vision into a visual art.

A Nikon user by default (influenced by his brother who owns a Nikon FM2 then), he owns many other cameras including both digital and film format, from digital compacts to large format cameras. When asked if he has a dream camera that he wish to own one day, he admittedly shared that he is after the sexy Pentax 645D, a digital medium format camera. And he pick Pentax over other brands is because Pentax is within reach and it produces wonderful photos at a friendly price.

Sim is also a fan of Sigma brand lenses like the 50mm F1.4 that gained cult status across the world and this lens changed his perception of 3rd party brand lenses. He is also planning to purchase Sigma’s latest cult lens which is the new Art line 35mm F1.4. For high end compacts, Sim is in love with the Sigma DP Merrill Series cameras.

“The superior image produced by the DP Merrill series of cameras, I have never seen any like this or any other camera that can produce such amazing quality of images which is so full of details.”

Giving thanks to APD Singapore, this is how he got introduced and gotten to try out the Pentax digital system. Sim shared that all the Pentax cameras has one thing in common, That is, the way the Pentax sensor render skin tone. As a professional portrait photographer, this is also the very reason that helped Sim made up his mind to get a Pentax 645D (or upgraded version) in the near future.

On a lighter note, I asked Sim if he is not a professional photographer today, what will he be? With that signature poker face of his, he replied “Architect”.

Not letting him off easily, I ask him if he has any tips for our readers here. Here’s what Master Sim said;

“Take your time, experiment with different genres before you decide what to do, do not follow what seems to be money making genre, you have to be really happy with what you do, fantastic if you like what you do and making money at the same time. But if you just do it for money’s sake then like many other people say, you are just a camera man producing images with no soul – and you’d probably give up sooner than you think.”

test_DSC1186

“For beginners, experiment in different genres, but better join a lot of photography workshops if you can afford the time & money. There wasn’t any workshop available when I started photography but today is different, there will always be something for you to learn and shoot especially from the internet. Lastly, and the most important thing, shoot a shit load of photo!”

Thank you Master Sim for sharing so much with our readers! I am sure you will be a good source of inspirations to photographers from all levels. For the rest of you here reading this – you heard the man.

Special Feature: Michael Lee, Ricoh Professional Photographer

PB168372
Photo: Michael Lee, Ricoh Professional Photographer.

Every trip tells a story that one can only interpret. It’s your experience, your feelings, your individual understanding of a place, a country, the culture and everything in between. With travel, every other (frequent) traveler that I personally knew owns a camera. Some travels with a SGD $8K DSLR with an arsenal of lenses while some travels with digital compact cameras. The point here, some of them returned with excellent photos that retold the story and experience of the place they visited and on the other end, some came back with photos that I myself do not understand what were they shooting in the first place. Been there before? I am sure you did.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As a photography tech reviewer, I got to know Michael Lee recently during my area of work and Michael had just started his very own company xing-asia.com specializing in photography tours. What interest me to know Michael better is none other than his travel photos that will shame many so-called “Travel Photographers”. It was till much later that I came to know that he uses a Ricoh Compact which he used to produce those stunning photos. Spoken to him many times and found Michael to be a humble and down to earth type of person that you will love travelling with. With the first given opportunity, I managed to catch up with Michael over a coffee and have him share some inspirational tips with our readers here.

Michael started photography in the most unusual way (well at least when compared to most of us). First, He organized a trip to Nepal and next, he grouped together a motley crue of 10 complete strangers. A 12 days trip to Nepal happened and these 10 travel pals became lifetime friends after the journey together. This inspires Michael to expand the interests of travelling and photography and since then, Michael had left his footsteps in numerous countries in Asia (North Asia to South East Asia).

The burning passion & the travel bug in him had resulted in Michael making a career switch to becoming a full time professional travel photographer who not only conducts tours to exotic places, he makes every trip out to be a photography class while calling the world his classroom guiding the travelers with him on the finer tips of travel photography and street photography.

Needless to say, when I asked him which photography genre he specialize – his answers are almost taken for granted when he said “Street Photography & Travel Photography”.
I attributed that to Michael’s way of approaching street people. He likes to strike up conversations with strangers on the streets and listen to their stories. And from these conversations, he learned about the way of life of people from every country he visited.
This inspires Michael a lot – to do more, to talk more, to learn more. These stories are evident in the photos that Michael took.

P1020924-2

Michael uses both digital compacts & digital SLRs, but at most times, you will see him with his trusty Ricoh camera. Michael shared that a compact does reduce the unwanted stares from strangers when he travels and people will be less sensitive to smaller cameras. This helps him to get lots of soulful shots of strangers in the midst of their activities – all natural.  He also added that he has the Pentax 645D, a digital medium format camera on his wish list.

When asked why he loves Ricoh so much unlike the majority of the photographers on our island who swears by their Canons & Nikon – he replied;

“If you have not tried shooting with a Ricoh camera, you should. Ricoh cameras are well designed, a marvel piece of art that was designed by photographers for photographers.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I asked Michael on his views on 3rd party brand equipments and what he thinks about it. He shared 3rd party brand does not mean inferior, sometimes, it performs better and priced better too. He quoted Sigma as an excellent example of his believes. It is also not just about the equipment, what really matters to a travel photographer is the passion and how one uses his/her perspectives correctly to an identified subject. One should also respect the culture, the subject and the ambience-environment to create an outstanding image. These are beyond technical capabilities – instead, this is very individual and personal.

KEV_2967
Photo: Michael Lee in action.

When asked if he is not a professional travel photographer, what would he be?

Michael (smilingly) replied that he would probably be working in some MNCs and working hard to save up for yet another trip! Michael share some good tips for those who are planning to enter the industry with a DSLR,

“As a professional photographer, the priority is to make a living. It is different from shooting photos for leisure. Those entering the industry should have a solid business plan, ignore what the competition is doing, stay focus on building a distinct style and brand that will ensure competitive advantage over others.”

And to the beginners?

“Keep a camera with you at all time, you never know what might happen the next moment or who you might come face to face with. Keep shooting and constantly look for inspirations, force yourself to take some shots on a daily basis.”

Thank you Michael for your time and taking time out to share with our readers your insights and tips to travel photography.
Hope the readers can pick up key points and put it to practical use!

It has been our hope to develop the lens system that is genuinely photographer-centered, and you can enjoy it for a longer period of time. As an experienced lens manufacturer that has been creating a diverse range of interchangeable lenses, our desire and know-how is crystalized in this unique paid service, “Mount Conversion Service”*. With this service, the mount of your owned SIGMA lenses can be converted to another mount system, depending on the specification of camera bodies.

*This service will be available from 2nd September, 2013.

Interchangeable lens camera systems appear to be superior in offering photographers more options, allowing them to change lenses freely and have more flexible photographic expression. Nevertheless, each interchangeable lens is limited with the specification of different camera systems. In other words, you can’t use those lenses if you change it from one type to another.

Although lenses are the key devices to create photographic expression, it is a shame that there is no system that purely sets the standard based on the functions and individual qualities of interchangeable lenses.

In this circumstance, SIGMA is going to start the “Mount Conversion Service” from September 2nd, 2013. Our goal is to provide more freedom for photographers so that they can select new camera bodies without worrying about the conventional limitation around the mount system of cameras, and keep on using their current lenses by adjusting them to fit with a new mechanism.

For the details, please check our website (opens on August 1st, 2013)

**This “Mount Conversion Service” is different from a normal repair. In order to apply for the service, please contact your local authorized subsidiary / distributor of SIGMA.

APEC Photo Contest 2013: Call for Entries‏

1005607_553770431350317_174145505_n

30th July 2013, Singapore – APEC PHOTO CONTEST 2013 – CALL FOR ENTRIES

How do you see trade in your life?

Trade is often linked to complicated statistics, but it also touches lives in a more personal way. Through the annual APEC Photo Contest 2013, we invite you to show us how trade is reflected in the lives and people of the region.

As the premier trade and economic forum in the Asia-Pacific region, APEC facilitates trade, investment and economic integration among diverse economies. This process brings us the products we enjoy faster and more inexpensively, improves our livelihoods through new jobs, encourages green technologies for a sustainable future, and connects us seamlessly by air, land, sea and e-commerce.

Each year, APEC and its host economy select specific priorities to focus on. This year, Indonesia hosts APEC under the theme “Resilient Asia-Pacific, Engine of Global Growth”, which reflects the region’s dynamism and its ability to drive global economic recovery.

Now, we invite you to share your photographic interpretation of APEC Indonesia’s 2013 priorities:

1. SUSTAINING THE MOMENTUM TOWARD FREE AND OPEN TRADE BY 2020

In 1994, APEC’s Economic Leaders committed to opening up trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific by 2010 for developed economies and by 2020 for developing economies.

Today, that momentum continues as APEC keeps strengthening the trading system across economies and boosting reforms of institutional frameworks, regulations, and policies.  As tariffs come down, APEC is increasingly turning to behind-the-border barriers such as enhancing electronic processing of government permits or ensuring transparency in government regulations.

By improving the efficiency and economic performance of member economies, APEC helps to build a seamless regional economy that brings the benefits of trade to all.

2. MOVING TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT WITH EQUITY

Amidst the global financial crisis, APEC seeks to respond comprehensively to rising challenges with a growth strategy that is sustainable and inclusive.  Sustainable growth with equity is about quality growth – ensuring economic growth is relevant to vulnerable sectors in the economy, such as women and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

This entails enhancing SMEs’ global competitiveness through innovation and tapping women’s productivity in the economy, as well as working on ensuring financial inclusion. As part of this priority, APEC also supports green growth through the adoption of green technologies, promotes sustainable ocean development, while strengthening the supply and production of food and improving access to health services.

3. IMPROVING CONNECTIVITY

To increase output and productivity, APEC will pursue efforts to link existing growth centers and build new ones across the region. This means improving physical connectivity through the construction of infrastructure like ports, roads, transport networks, but also enhancing connectivity amongst government institutions and systems, as well as people-to-people connectivity.

APEC’s efforts will include the development of infrastructure, facilitation and promotion of infrastructure investment, including infrastructure for connectivity in the Pacific Ocean as a major link between economies in the region.

——————————————————-

Trade is often linked to complicated statistics, but it also touches lives in a more personal way.
Send us your photos interpreting APEC Indonesia 2013 priorities and win attractive prizes.

SPEAKERS PROFILE

Allan Lee, Accredited Instructor.

A Commercial Photographer & P.A. Certified Trainer for Photography resulting from his Work Combination of Outdoor Media, Advertising Media, Photojournalist, Web Editor, Writer/ Contributor to Media Trade Magazines & Travel Publications. His work is regularly published by newspapers, magazines & online by various media.

Allan’s reviews, photos & articles relating to Camera & Lenses have received attention & fine accolades from camera brands. Allan does a variety of photography work, from weddings to products for advertisement use, but prefers macro & infrared landscape photography when he is on leisure mode. Allan conducts photography classes on Macro, Studio Lights, Product Photography & Gear Maintenance regularly at various schools but prefers to call PSS “Home”.

Alvinn Lim, Accredited Instructor.

Alvinn Lim developed an interest in photography at a very young age. Starting with a simple manual 35mm SLR camera and a book on basic photography, he self-taught the basic techniques of photography through exploration and pure passion 20 years ago.

After completing his national service, Alvinn entered the workforce as a full-time photographer. Having 16 years of photography experiences with several renowned companies specializing in different aspects of photography; Alvinn is well-established in this field. With his experience and expertise and his firm belief in having more room for creativity, he eventually started his own photography business “EYERED WORKS”.

Alvinn Lim does mainly commercial, advertising and editorial work, which could be found in many leading publications.

Goh Kim Hui, Accredited Instructor.

Goh Kim Hui is a professional photographer specializes in Commercial Photography.

With more than 30 years of experience, he has received recognition from various international bodies. In year 2000, he received the Honorary Excellent Distinction from the International Federation of Photographic Art for his outstanding contributions in Photography.

His first solo exhibition “Sky is not a Limit” was held in year 2000 at Selegie Arts Centre, describing the 5 elements in the nature with the “Yin and Yang” philosophy. Some of his works were collected by overseas museum and private collectors.

His works were exhibited and published in local and overseas media, many works had won awards in local and international competitions.

Hui Man Yan, Accredited Instructor.

Though more than qualified to turn professional years ago, Hui has chosen to remain in the amateur. His reason is that he gets greater satisfactions shooting subjects whom he likes rather than subjects which the client wants if he has to shoot for a living. And he claims that he is still “learning”, so he cannot consider professional. “I don’t want to be restricted by commercial considerations.”

He believes to take a good picture, the camera is a helping tool, the man behind the camera is important. A photographer must learn all the time, and change his style in small ways from time to time, or his craft will stagnate.

Not one to keep his trade secrets to himself, Hui immerses himself in educating the young minds of Singapore in photography. These days, Hui passes on his skills and knowledge to others and promotes photography as a hobby in club and school by giving talks and teaching. He has been teaching his popular Advanced Travel Photography course and An Eye for Creativity course at The Photographic Society of Singapore since 1998.

Richard Seah, Accredited Instructor.

Richard pursued photography since the mid-1970s, a major milestone came in November 2007 when he finally bought a digital camera, a Fujifilm S5 Pro that he still uses today.

Richard’s signature style is “uptight” – short for “close-up / tight-cropping.”

He shoots predominantly with an 80-400 zoom lens (previously 75-300), but is equally comfortable with wide, super-wide and fisheye lenses.

Richard is known for his unconventional choice of subjects. The most unusual subject is hands and Richard has self-published a book titled Photographs of Hands. He has since shifted focus to the legs. In 2006, Richard was featured in Asian Photography magazine in an article headlined, Spiritual photographer – a reference to another of his focus areas, prayer.

He has also done a lot of night, low light and stage photography. He is a regular shooter at The Esplanade Outdoor Theatre and Concourse and has self-published a book titled Song and Dance – Portraits from the Esplanade.

Richard’s images tend towards abstraction and his compositions have been described as “daring” – as he is not one who is afraid of breaking rules.

His current explorations include multiple exposures and blurs, as well as ultra-high key, almost pure white, imagery – achieved in camera and with processing software.

Thomas Tham Joo Kit, Accredited Instructor.

As a humanitarian, photographer and a teacher in photography, Thomas aims to bring about awareness and social responsibility in his photography works and present to the world. He believes that each of us can do our part in making this world a better place.

Photography is a medium for Thomas to capture the moment of thoughts, action, emotional states and spiritual states of the subjects. Soulfulness is what Thomas looking for in each photo captured, whether it is reportage or for the purpose of art, he let the subjects’ ‘talk’ about their experience, concerns and freely expressing their emotional states. It is said that the eyes are the windows of our souls. And in the eyes of Thomas’, the truth is starkly revealed.

2013 Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A)

17th July 2013, Singapore – It gives me great pleasure to be given the opportunity to review the 2013 Art Series Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A). Way before this lens reached our shores, there’s already a few websites posting incredible reviews and raves about this lens. I was so looking forward to it and when the lens was issued to me last week, I brought it out for a shoot over 2 days and came back with astounding results.

For those new to this site, if you are looking for technical reviews, please pop over to other sites that give you very in-depth reviews on the lens itself, over here, we are only concerned about how does the lens performed, the built quality and everything layman.

ALN_7889
Picture: The NEW Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A) mounted on a Canon EOS 600D.

First Impression – living up to the new product lines (Art, Contemporary & Sports) under Sigma’s Global Vision, this lens was made to impress. Made with the new Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) like its earlier brethrens, this is one mean lens. It feels solid to the hand and when I mount it on my Canon EOS 600D, the lens feels at home although I feel that the weight of the lens (810gm) had the camera front-heavy which might cause a little stress on the lens mount. But this is negligible since Canon’s lens mount are solid metal alloys that can withstand the use of heavy lenses.

The finishing on the lens barrel again did not disappoint. If you have read my earlier reviews on the new line of Sigma lenses, you will remember me making reference to Carl Zesis & Leica. The new Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 carries on the new design in line with the updated product identity. For the sake of direct comparison, the New Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 feels like an EF24-70mm F2.8L USM, just lighter and the size is very similar to the Canon EF35mm F1.4L USM. The smooth finishing, cool to the user’s touch and the ergonomics for handling are simply excellent and anyone who had touched it will want to use it. Personally, if blindfolded, I will imagine myself to be touching the Leica 75mm F/2 Summicron APSH – exaggerating? Not, certainly not. The actual size of the New Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 is 78mm diameter x 121mm length, not too big, not too small and will fit most camera bags.

DSC_0064
Picture: Shooting with the NEW Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A) mounted on a Canon EOS 600D.

Using it – on the field, the lens performed exceptionally well. The hurricane-fast focusing are spot on accurately for 99% of my shots thanks to the company’s proven Hypersonic Motor (HSM) which can be seen on most Sigma’s better or Pro lenses. The focusing is so quiet on the lens that at some moments, I thought I had switched the lens to Manual Focus only to realized that the lens had already locked its focus – amazing! The internal focusing system which contributed to the fast & silent focusing is another plus. This means lesser entry points for unwanted dusts and the use of adjustable filters will be an ease.

ALN_7890
Picture: The NEW Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A) mounted on a Canon EOS 600D.

Internally, more surprises are in store. This 9-Blader APS-C Monster of a lens are made up of 17 elements in 12 groups, 5 SLD glass elements, 4 glass-molded aspherical elements to ensure that you get superb image from this lens across all focal length. Since the new Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 were made as a “DC” (DG for Full Frame), it has the same focal range equivalent of 27mm to 52.5mm (28.8mm to 56mm on Canon APSC Bodies) which is pretty much useable for lots of photographic applications. The constant F1.8 will behave like a F2.8 on Full Frame cameras due to the smaller sensors of the APSC bodies – but there isn’t much to complain either given that the New Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 is currently the world’s First & Only F1.8 Zoom lens. For the record, many manufacturers had once attempted to create such a lens but none succeeded. Sigma took the R&D all the way and successfully made the new 18-35mm F1.8 – consider it as a feat.

I will now let the photos do the talking, do check out the photos below taken over last weekend at varying apertures and under different lighting conditions.

At F4, the lens still produce beautiful bokeh and the subject did not suffer any detail lost, do see the next photo with a tighter crop.

Amazing sharpness even after cropping 40% off the original photo. Can you imagine what kind of photo you might get if the aperture is stopped to F8?

OK, next we have a few processed photos done with the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A).

IMG_0102
Above Picture: Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A) at F10

At launch, the New Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A) will be produced in Canon EF-mount, Nikon F-mount & Sigma SA-mount. (with other mounts to be announced later) This is the 5th new lens announced by Sigma under the New Sigma Global Vision line after the mighty Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM (A), the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC OS HSM (C), the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM (S) & Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC HSM (A). Till date, all the new releases had been a winner in their respective classes & categories of DSLR lenses.

Buying the new Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A) is the equivalent of buying a few prime lenses. I will take cues from the focal length stops of 18mm, 20mm, 24mm, 28mm & 35mm – means if you buy the new Sigma 18-35mm F1.8, you are buying 5 x F1.8 primes lenses. Right, some of you Gear Heads will argue that prime lenses will still be sharper than a zoom lens – well, don’t speak too soon till you try out the lens. Sigma do not just throw any lens into the market, they made them.

DSC_0068
Picture: Me posing with te NEW Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (A) mounted on a Canon EOS 600D.

Evidently, the new lens design, the new material, the new internal design for elements arrangement, the new firmwares – Sigma is telling photographers from all over the world something.

“Sigma is re-defining the benchmark of how professional lenses should be made today & the future. Every professional photographer should own a Sigma” – Allan LEE, Editor

Lucky Respondents! ourshutterjourney.com Year Awards 2012/2013

11th July 2013, Singapore – ourshutterjourney.com recently ran a survey questionaire for a better understanding of the readers, subscribers, followers of this site (View Here). We were overwhelmed by the 1107 email entries (we were really expecting 500+) and it took 4 volunteers to sort out all the entries and answers over 2 days. While some entries gave us really interesting answers (that I almost fell of my chair), many took the effort to reply.

From the entries, 2 Lucky Respondents were selected randomly by the Sponsors Audio & Photo Distributor (F.E.) Pte Ltd & Sigma Marketing Singapore Pte Ltd to win $100 NTUC Vouchers each.

The winners were invited to Sigma Marketing & APDS Office for a simple Prize Presentation:

– Mr. Eddie Seng
