Which Camera Brand(s) Do You Own?
(Poll Below)
dd

23rd July 2014, Singapore – Most of the photographers that I know owns a couple of cameras as well as many lenses from various makers, sometimes from different brands, some from different eras.  It is pretty diversified when it comes to selecting a brand of camera. There are many deciding factors too when selecting a new cameras. From photo quality to user interface, from ISO performance to creative filters, from high resolution LCD screen to tilt-able screen, from price point to brand presence, the factors are far too many to mention.

Out of curiosity and taking this opportunity as part of a Readers’ Demographic update, we are conducting a simple poll here. Please kindly tick the brand(s) of camera(s) & lense (2nd Poll) that you currently own. Although there is no prize for polling, it will help me & my team in the long run to provide more relevant articles, resources and contents for your enjoyment & references.

Thank you.

The Ricoh GR – The Legacy Continues

The Ricoh GR – The Legacy Continues.
image
Photo: The Ricoh GR (left) and the Ricoh GRDIV (right)

18th July 2014, Singapore
– The Ricoh GR had been around for a while since its introduction to the market. From our understanding, the GR had done well in terms of sales locally and till this moment as I write, units of the GR are still being bought off the shelves. The Ricoh’s GR-Series compact cameras had been around since the good old days where film rules. Marketed and position as the company’s High-End compact cameras line, Ricoh GR-series cameras had been trusted by professional photographers all over the world till today. As the global digitalization evolves, the Ricoh GR Series had also updated what a modern professional compact camera should be. It was made not just to replace the previous model (Ricoh GR Digital IV or GRD4), the newly designed GR is a new camera altogether. The latest & current model – simply called the “GR” is the answer to this update.

Grhist
Photo: A Brief history of Ricoh GR models from 1996 till the previous model GRDIV before the GR made its debut in 2013.

The main reasons why professional photographers are buying the GR are pretty obvious. The GR comes with a 16.2mp APS-C sensor – the biggest sensor so far that Ricoh had ever placed in a compact camera, a newly designed prime lens that gives an effective focal range of 28mm wide, a bright aperture of F2.8 (I missed the F1.9 on the GRD4 though) & a new GR V-Processor as the sweetener for the GR package. To make the GR sweeter, the 3 inch 1.23 million dots LCD is using the same “WM” aka “WhiteMagic” technology as the Sony RX1/RX100.

R0000002

For the keen eye, one would have also noticed that Ricoh had added the TAv shooting mode (Time Aperture Value) to the GR which is pretty unique to Pentax cameras. Since both companies (Pentax & Ricoh) had merged, it’s great to see Pentax-ish factors finding their way into Ricoh cameras and I hope to see the same can be done to the Pentax products too.

As usual, I would like to disclaim myself that this is not a technical review site, we are really more keen on what kind of photo, colors & image quality that the GR can produce. If you are looking for in-depth specifications, please look elsewhere or at the provided links after the jump.
(PS: Hello to the people over at Dpreview forum, thanks for constantly sharing my reviews over the dpreview forums. I noted the comments from many dpreview users that this site is not a technical-review site. Yes, they are absolutely right. From day 1, I had positioned my humble website as the “user review site” and not a “technical site” and I hope this is the last time I had to disclaim myself. Keep sharing my articles anyway – love you all!)

R0000119
Recently when I was meeting up with the local distributor, I took the opportunity to loan the GR out for a weekend. I had own a few previous versions of the GR-Series cameras and admittedly, I had not really touch the new GR till this review. The GR was introduced for exactly a year now, and after using it over a weekend, it is easy to understand why professional photographers are buying the Ricoh GR as their travel or “Off-Day” compact. The GR was built on a solid magnesium alloy body, nice & large grip (a typical Ricoh design cue but useful anytime!), fits into most pockets, focus fast & accurately, produces images with excellent resolutions and a sensible button layout.

R0000131

All photos published along with this article were shot using the Ricoh GR on a one-day excursion to places of worships in Singapore. The photos were not edited except for straightening, slight cropping and added water-marks. You may wish to click on the photo to view at full size to check out the sharpness and the number of details captured within every shot.

Featured Merchant – Alan Photo Trading

Photo: Alan Photo Trading (Sim Lim Square).

15th July 2014, Singapore – Most photographers will know a couple of famous photography shops that are known to be reputable and trustworthy. This is important as photography equipment is not cheap and you need a good and well-stocked retailer to back you up especially if you are a professional and paying your bills from your shutter count. Today, I went on to find out more about one of the famous photographer store here in Singapore – they are none other than Alan Photo Trading.

Before we start, I would like to disclaim that although my name is Allan, I am not related to Alan Photo Trading in any way except that they are one of our Accredited Merchants for our members, subscribers and followers. 🙂

IMG-page1
Photo: Tom, Account Manager – Alan Photo Trading – Taken in 2005.

Alan Photo Trading was founded in 1987 by Mr. Alan Tan, their pioneer store was located at Sim Lim Square and it was a humble shop selling mainly films, film cameras & accessories. Since then, Alan Photo Trading had come a long way, and they had supported the photography trade through the digital revolution when digital formats were introduced towards the end of 1990s.

Today, Alan Photo Trading is one of the Top 5 Photography store in Singapore retailing with a full inventory of photography equipment that professional photographers trust and hobbyists love. Today Alan Photo Trading has 3 unique stores located at Sim Lim Square, Funan Digitalife Mall & Marina Bay Sands Shoppes and they have a separate administrative office & distribution centre at Waterloo Street.

So what are their secrets to success and sustainability? We caught up with the Alan Photo Trading’s Operation Manager John Chong and I managed to have a few words with him.

========================

Ed: John, can you please share with our readers the secret(s) to Alan Photo Trading’s success today?

John: Staff integrity, Honest trading & Friendship with every customer.

Ed: Can you elaborate on that?

John: Staff integrity is important, for a business to succeed, we must first work on our staff, impart ownership values, properly trained, knows the product that they are selling and must be able to handle all kinds of customer. And there must not be any internal competition, rather, the sales team works as a team, helping out one another whenever someone needed help.

Honest trading is important because at Alan Photo trading, we do not believe in doing one-off business and we are very careful with the guidelines & pricing given to us by brand owners – likewise with our customers when they make a purchase at our stores. The competition is tough in this industry, but we strongly believe in our products & our services so there is no need for us to do anything out of the ordinary. By being honest and transparent in our business operations, we are also protecting other like-minded fellow retailers, the brand owners and our customers too.

IMG_0002
Photo: Alan Photo Trading in the 1980s.
John: Friendship is when we place emphasis on developing long-term relationships with our customers over profit. In every business, profit is important, but relationship is even more important for a business to sustain & survive. We strive to develop this relationship with every customer that passed through our doors. What is a business without business-client relationships? When our customers become our friends, it means mutual trusts had developed and this is when we know that we had won our customers’ trust & heart.
This is sweet.

Ed: That is very interesting. Thank you for sharing!

Sigma DP2 Quattro – A New Breed

===================================

Rogue_FlashBender_Banner_SJS

===================================
Sigma DP2 Quattro – A New Breed
dp2Q-small- sigmaquat

6th July 2014, Vietnam/ Singapore – Sigma released the DP2 Quattro with much anticipation from the DP fans. (The DP 1 & DP3 Quattro will soon follow) The DP Series – favourably known for its high level of details and sharpness has definitely became a new breed with the Quattro guise. Completely redesigned, the DP2 is now much faster than its predecessors. The Foveon X3 CMOS sensor is also newly designed, but only better. Instead of 40mp, we get a 33 mp which is already very capable. The 30mm F2.8 fixed lens on the DP2 Quattro looks like the Sigma 30mm F1.4 DG HSM ART lens though.

At 30mm, the actual focal range is about 45mm on a 35mm format. The lens comes with a 9 blades aperture that uses light from F2.8 to F16 and at one push of the button the lens can be activated into a manual focusing lens. It has 8 elements in 6 groups and has a minimum focusing distance of 28cm, which is perfect for most close ups shots. The 30mm lens also accepts 58mm filters so using CPL or a regular UV is possible too.

The DP2 Quattro comes with a hotshoe that accepts Sigma proprietary flash guns however when I was reviewing this camera in Vietnam, I did not use any flash at all. The new Sigma DP2 Quattro ships with 02 battteries (BP-51) in the box with an extra battery pouch, strap, chargers & cables. Specs wise, the camera is considered very decent. ISO range is 100-6400 and I used100-800 only for this review trip and it has served me well. It has 9 focus points and 10 White balance modes, 11 Color modes (I like this) and the standard metering. Weight wise, its a mere 395gm without the battery, very good for walking the streets as the DP2 Quattro is light as compared to any DSLR.

As usual, I have to disclaim myself that this is not a technical site, so if you are looking for really in-depth review of the DP2 Quattro, do look elsewhere. We are more keen in sharing the real photos taken by the DP2 Quattro here. Check out the photos below.

All photos are un-edited straight from the camera except that I had straightened or cropped out as examples.

The DP2 Quattro is capable in doing closeup too. I did a 20% cropped for the above photo.

SDIM0169

At Ha Long Bay, sadly there was no nice sky due to the rain. But the DP2 was able to capture lots of details. View this photo in full size to see.

SDIM0216

Evening hues at Ha Long Bay. Noise are noticeable here at ISO 800, but still very much acceptable when viewing this photo as a whole.

SDIM0353
Photo: Shot by the new Sigma DP2 Quattro.
Did a little slow shutter at the street of Hanoi. The DP2 Quattro is a Street Photography Monster.

I do not know what you are probably thinking right now after viewing all the photos above. But I am very sure that you are impressed with the amount of details that was captured by the DP2 Quattro. Although many photographers will tell me that not everyone will scrutinize details like what I did, but I can tell you that many photographers crop their photos and with that, you cannot afford to have details lost in the process – wouldn’t you agree?

The sharpness of the DP2 Quattro is out of this world when compared to other high end compact cameras. Although the design does attracts more attention than it deserves, the DP2 is a new breed, a new look is definitely legit. And when compared to the previous versions of DP Series cameras, the new DP2 Quattro is much faster now – from starting up, to focusing, to recording well, at least this is something that makes the DP2 Quattro worth getting.

As my Vietnam trip comes to an end, my little love affair with the DP2 Quattro also ended.
This is a review unit from Sigma Singapore, hope to loan it again some day.

03rd July 2014, Singapore – A reader shared with us that there is a blog by the name of “Shutter Journeys” and we got curious and we went on to check out this blog. The blog is managed by a beautiful lady by the name of Donna who is based in Las Vegas, Nevada and she specializes in ” Travel, photography, art, writing, animals, nature, hiking, and any combination thereof.” as stated on her profile page.

You may wish to check out her blog too as we spotted lots of nice photos.
She has another site too with more photos.

Thanks to the unnamed reader for sharing with us about this site.
We used to call our group/ company with the below names;
1) Photo Journey
2) Shutter Journey Singapore
3) Singapore Shutter Journey
4) Ourphotojourney

However, we have finally decided & registered the name “Ourshutterjourney” earlier this year (2014) with the governing authorities as the main operating name & brand. The activity group is still called “Shutter Journey (Singapore) Photography Group” which the words “Shutter Journey” is non-exclusive to our group/ company/ brand. So if you spotted another site/ blog/ group bearing a similar name, please do not be alarmed.

Meantime, do check out Donna’s photos on her sites.

Canon EOS 1200D – Basic Just Got Better

===================================

Canon EOS 1200D – Basic Just Got Better
photo 2
Editor Allan Lee at work with the Canon EOS 1200D.
Behind-the-scene photo by Vince Tan.

02nd July 2014, Singapore – It seems like only yesterday when we last reviewed a “4-digit-model” EOS. I remembered the attention Canon received when they first announced the EOS 1000D back in June 2008 and subsequently replaced with the mightier EOS 1100D on February 2011. You may wish to check out my review here when I put the EOS 1000D & EOS 1100D side by side to trip elsewhere. So Canon took 2.5 years to replace the 1000D and 3.5 years to replace the 1100D. As anticipated by Canon fans, the 1200D finally came.

I managed to loan out the Canon EOS 1200D with the assigned kit lens (EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM II) for a weekend and I decided to bring it out to Pulau Ubin (an “old town village island in Singapore”). Before I proceed, once again I would like to stress that this is not a technical site so if you are looking 101% tech specifications of the EOS 1200D please visit elsewhere. We are really more keen on how the camera  performed and the photos it produces.
* All photos featured on this article are non-edited except straightening, cropping and slight effects added for presentation.

IMG_1263Photo: Shot with the Canon EOS 1200D from the bump boat as we approached the island jetty. Added the fake miniature look for the fun of it.

The Canon EOS 1200D sits right below the super cute & tiny EOS 100D in the Canon EOS product line so we guessed that the 1200D is targeting upgraders from prosumers that uses high-end digital compacts or even mirrorless cameras. It is also great for beginners, students or the no-fuss travelers who wish to shoot quality photos without all the “complications” in a regular mainstream DSLR. The 1200D promises fun too as it comes default with an array of creative filters for the added fun and expands the creativity of the user.

IMG_1276Photo: Shot with the Canon EOS 1200D near the shore beside the island jetty.
The 18 megapixel APS-C (1.6x crop) EOS 1200D uses the older Digic 4 image processor but it is not a problem at all. Digic 4 IP were once legends and performed in models like the flagship 1D MarkIV, 5D MarkII, 7D, 50D and were also used in many Rebels (xxxD) models. Although we are not into video, but it is good to know that the 1200D supports full HD Video shooting and it has a manual override which is seldom seen in entry-level DSLRs.

IMG_1339Photo: Shot with the Canon EOS 1200D, a monitor in the shade.

The handling of the Canon EOS 1200D is pretty decent. The right-hand grip is pretty deep and that ensures big-handed users (like me) are able to hold the camera comfortably. Buttons are easy to find & operate and the menus are typically-Canon so it is really easy to use. The 1200D’s compact size feels like a slightly bigger prosumer digital compact but certainly much more purposeful, when used with the supplied kit lens, we find that the weight balance is slightly more skewed towards the camera back rather than center. In this case, it is acceptable since the 1200D body is light to start with (435gm).

IMG_1348Photo: Shot with the Canon EOS 1200D, colorful mud crabs.

IMG_1370Photo: Shot with the Canon EOS 1200D, mangrove at low tide.

IMG_1405Photo: Shot with the Canon EOS 1200D, a lone large bird hunting at low tide.

IMG_1435
Photo: Shot with the Canon EOS 1200D, doing a little close-up since most kits lens has good magnification ratios .

As the owner & a professional user of several Canon bodies across the product range, I will describe the Canon EOS 1200D as a sensible upgrade from the EOS 1100D. I must highlight that one of the biggest improvement of the 1200D is the exterior fit and finishing. It has a closer finishing to the higher end models like EOS 700D/70D where the surface is “texturized” and it has a proper rubberized grip as well. One of the biggest & common complaints about the 1100D/1000D was the “cheap and plasticky” feel. The 1200D is a lot better for this, and it feels more much premium now (although the full HD Video was awesome but I don’t do video) I was really looking for more surprises when I received the 1200D but I was probably looking at the wrong place – don’t get me wrong – the 1200D does its job well and effortlessly and it will be the perfect camera for those upgrading from prosumers digital compact cameras. I can’t really find any fault with the Canon EOS 1200D although I tried to.

As evil as I can be when scrutinizing entry-level DSLRs, the Canon EOS 1200D passed my little personal test.
Ed.

Special Thanks to Canon Singapore & Canon EOS World for the Canon 1200D.

Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art Magic – Part II
This lens is so magical that we have to do a part II – Featuring Jino Lee.

Jino-01

01st July 2014, Singapore – Following our first review of the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM ART, we are no doubt impressed with “Everything Sigma”. From the lens build to the image quality, there is certainly no reason not to get the New 50mm from Sigma. Although we are sold on buying Sigma’s New 50mm, we just want to be sure and have another professional photographer to confirm our findings before we make the purchase. The editorial team decided that we should pass the lens to Jino Lee whom we recently interviewed for a featured article. Every photo you see on this article were shot by Jino Lee using the New Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lens with a Canon DSLR.

Jino is known for his excellent “street sense” mainly due to his strength in travel photography and street photography. Having a 50mm lens in his hands allows him to look & frame subjects easily as 50mm is the “unofficial street lens” which Jino is very familiar at this focal range.

Jino-03

“The new Sigma 50mm is well-designed and well built. I agreed with the Editor AL that this lens feels much more expensive than it really is. It is good to know that this is not just purely cosmetic as the lens produces excellent photos with lots of colors & details which is very essential for most travel or street photography. The images are sharp and contrasts are well balanced – and there are barely any visible distortion at all – making this lens an excellent standard lens for most prime lens users.” – Jino Lee

Jino-04

You heard the man. Indeed, Sigma’s latest offerings are already on news headlines since the “Global Vision” revamp of the company. A few earlier releases has already bagged awards if you know which other Art, Sports or Contemporary lenses I am talking about.

Hope all of you enjoyed Jino’s review photos featured here using the New Sigma 50mm ART. Since a photo speaks a thousand words, I will leave you to the millions with Jino’s photos.

My Lowepro Diary Part 6 – The Inverse 200 AW

My Lowepro Diary Part 6 – The Inverse 200 AW
– When Mobility Meets Practicality

image
Picture: The compact & superbly built Lowepro Inverse 200AW.

27th June 2014, Singapore – Before I start this really short article – I would like to apologize for the bad quality photos on this article as I was trying out the camera from an “X” mobile phone. The camera on this phone seems like it will not make the user very happy. Anyway, back to the article. Recently I was preparing for a trip and someone close to me asked me this question: “Is there a compact camera bag that I can have it on my waist + sling when I need it, and it must carry 4 prime lenses, 1 camera body, 1 flash and along with other knick-knacks for a short trip?”.

So off we went to Cathay Photo and check out the full Lowepro range. After sharing our requirements (by repeating the same question above) with the customers service person, we were presented with the Lowepro Inverse 200AW.
For the sake of this article, the below photo was shot without the DSLR body – the center compartment was meant to have the camera body mounted with the lens (shown in photo) and have the camera “faced down”.

image2

The Lowepro Inverse 200AW looks compact from the outside but it is certainly “roomy” on the inside. From the above, you can see that everything just sits perfectly fine. With some clever configuration of the paddings, the Inverse 200AW can be modified to fit most gears. The above gears that I packed for the trip is considered “somewhat Heavy Duty” by some photographers already, then again, the Inverse 200 AW swallowed everything with some space to spare.

image5

The bag top cover (top photo) were made with thick paddings (that further proves that the Inverse can be used in any orientation) and houses the usual memory card pockets & spare battery pocket. In front of the bag (if you are carrying on waist mode), there is a pocket with zipper (below photo) that I can put small little stuff like my cell phone, passport, keys etc. There are 2 other smaller clips to hold this front “pouch” together. Behind/below this pouch, the weather cover is carefully tucked away below. Very thoughtful design.

image6 image7

If you decided that you are not going to sling the bag with the supplied strap – but want to have the Inverse 200AW becomes a waist bag, just pull out the waist hoist from the back of the back. The thick & fully adjustable padded belt comes with a large snap-on buckle and quick and easy operation.

image8

I am so very sure that I am going to have fun with the Lowepro Inverse 200AW.
Get yours too.

Nikon D810 – Best of Both Worlds
Nikon_D810_D810_ambience_2-578-80
New 36.3-megapixel Nikon D810 Boasts the Versatility and Performance for Stunning Shots

*Taken from the official press release from Nikon Singapore. Editor’s Note after the jump.

27th June 2014, Singapore – Nikon Singapore Pte Ltd is pleased to announce the launch of the new D810, a full-frame digital SLR camera designed to enable photographers the opportunity to unleash their potential and produce extremely high-definition, high-quality images and video. The D810 offers the ability to record stunning Full HD video, while a 36.3-megapixel sensor and wide ISO range combine to offer unrivalled images rich in tone and definition. The D810 delivers shots that put the camera in a class of its own, while offering outstanding versatility to enable it to excel in a wide range of environments and situations.

The D810 puts incredible power and flexibility in the hands of videographers, recording Full HD 1080p movies at 60 frames per second (fps). It features top-notch image quality, and is designed to meet the needs of photography enthusiasts and professionals alike who demand a DSLR that delivers the ultimate blend of clarity, sharpness, and rich colours for any shot. The new model features a 36.3-megapixel sensor and an ISO range of 64 to 12800, giving the camera the capacity to maximise the full potential of Nikon’s wide range of NIKKOR lenses.

“The new Nikon D810 builds on the performance of the acclaimed D800 in producing breath-taking images,” said Garland Mak, Deputy General Manager of International Marketing Division Imaging Group, Nikon Singapore Pte Ltd. “The raw power of the D810 maintains the integrity of every frame, blending incredible picture quality with the ability to capture clear Full HD video, while giving professionals complete creative control over the image. Its high megapixel count and wide ISO range ensure rich and sharp images regardless of shooting conditions.”

The full-frame D810 is a step up from the successful D800, boasting an effective pixel count of 36.3 million, enabling images to be enlarged without degrading quality. The image sensor is designed without an optical low-pass filter to ensure images appear sharp while retaining rich tonality. It also packs the power of the EXPEED 4 image-processing engine that delivers high-speed processing with a wide range of ISO sensitivities ranging from 64 to 12800. This can be decreased to Lo 1 (ISO 32 equivalent), or increased up to Hi 2 (ISO 51200 equivalent), to offer further creative control for shooting in less-than-optimal conditions.

intro

D810 Primary Features

1. High-definition, high-quality video

• Clear and accurate recording: The D810 features support for recording of 1080/60p Full HD videos. Optimized data processing designed to make use of the 36.3 effective megapixels provides rich, detailed video with smooth exposure alteration, even when brightness changes. The readout method of the image sensor has been further optimized to produce higher-definition images with a sense of depth. The D810 is designed to make the most of

the range of high-quality NIKKOR lenses, opening up the possibilities of creative expression for movie makers. HDMI output can be used to simultaneously record directly to an external recorder, providing an additional level of flexibility and smooth transition of tonality.

• Metering and control to deliver clear and balanced shots: Centre-weighted and highlight-weighted metering enable the shooter to achieve stable, accurate metering under both changing light conditions or fixed lighting as on a stage or studio. The highlight mode detects the brightest areas of the scene and automatically determines an appropriate exposure. It’s also possible to automatically adjust ISO sensitivity to ensure appropriate exposure while shutter speed and aperture are fixed. A new Highlight Display feature automatically identifies and indicates areas that are likely to appear blown-out, prompting the videographer to adjust settings to achieve a better exposure.

• Dual-format recording: The D810 features support for two recording formats:

full-frame- and cropped-format. The full-frame format provides outstanding results for movies filmed with a shallow depth of field, while the cropped-format recording offers an angle with a closer reach to the subject. These two angles of view can be achieved with a single lens, which enhances production efficiency.

• Improved audio that eliminates noise: A built-in stereo microphone is included that effectively minimises wind noise. Frequency response can be set between a wide range for atmospheric sounds or voice to highlight dialogue.

2. Unrivalled image quality in Nikon’s range

• 36.3-megapixel image sensor for rich tonality: The D810 includes a 36.3 megapixel image sensor designed without an optical low-pass filter to ensure images maintain rich tonality in any lighting conditions. The ISO sensitivity ranges from ISO 64 to 12800 and can be decreased to Lo 1 (ISO 32 equivalent), or increased up to Hi 2 (ISO 51200 equivalent) to suit any environment.

• EXPEED 4 image-processing engine delivers unrivaled quality and performance: The EXPEED 4 image-processing engine provides a number of enhancements that boost image quality over its predecessor. Enhancements include improved noise reduction performance at high sensitivities, as well as upgraded depth and clarity in gradation rendering – thanks to a new “Clarity”*1 option in Picture Control. Higher accuracy of automatic white balance and an increased number of continuous shots combine to enable

the D810 to shine in terms of picture quality and performance. In addition, the adoption of a new CMOS sensor with the EXPEED 4 delivers high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 5 fps in full-frame format and approximately 7 fps*2 in cropped-format, making captures of a broader range for

both still and moving subjects possible. *1 Can be applied only to still images.

*2 When powered by the AC Adapter EH-5b or the Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D12 with batteries other than the Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL15.

• Advanced creativity with Picture Control: The D810 also includes Nikon’s sophisticated image creation system, providing the photographer with creative control and quick access to a range of image adjustments directly through the camera menu.

Nikon-D810-camera

3. Reliability and versatility

• Quick and accurate autofocus: An improved, 51-point autofocus (AF) system provides the highest accuracy in the history of Nikon DSLRs with extremely quick and accurate focus acquisition. A new “group-area AF” mode helps avoid unintentional background focusing when shooting moving subjects.

• Reduced vibration for clearer images: The D810 includes an electronic front-curtain shutter, which effectively reduces internal mechanical vibration. When the electronic front-curtain shutter is enabled instead of the

mechanical shutter during mirror-up, the camera’s image sensor acts as a front curtain of the focal-plane shutter and this provides stability and minimal blur – particularly when shooting long exposures at night.

• Accurate color for perfect shot composition: An optical viewfinder with 100 percent frame coverage enhances light transmission ratio and coloration, enabling the photographer to clearly and accurately line up their shots. A new prism coating offers a clear, bright view of the subject. The D810 also includes an Organic EL display element, which provides a clear display of the indicator in the viewfinder, even when shooting outdoors. Monitor color balance can be customized according to user’s taste and environment.

4. Robust Form and Function

• Superb operability for perfect composition: The D810 includes an i button that provides direct access to various functions according to shooting situations, enabling the photographer to quickly set up for a shot. A “split-screen display zoom” function enlarges two points on the same horizontal line simultaneously to confirm that an image is accurately level, which is especially useful for architectural shots of buildings and bridges or landscapes with a horizon.

• Unlimited shots on the same frame: An unlimited number of high-quality JPEG images can be shot continuously, which helps produce beautiful light trails when shooting at night. When using the CH or CL release mode with a shutter speed slower than 4 seconds, the duration of continuous shooting can be extended indefinitely, provided memory card capacity and battery charge are not exhausted.

• Superior dust-prevention and durability: The D810 features a robust, weather-resistant design that offers a comprehensive seal against dust and water droplets. A newly-designed, highly accurate and durable shutter has been tested for 200,000 cycles with the unit actually loaded on the camera, providing years of trouble-free image capture.

5. High-performance NIKKOR lenses

• The perfect complement: The D810 has been designed to operate effectively with NIKKOR lenses to maximise the impact of the high pixel count to produce stunning still images and movies. The superb optical performance offered by the wide variety of lenses provides the shooter with the capability to capitalise on the performance of the camera.

* Except where noted, all specifications provided apply to use at an ambient temperature of 23°C (± 3°C) with a fully charged battery, in ac cordance with Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) standards.

Price and Availability

The Nikon D810 will be available at Authorised Nikon Dealers around late July 2014.

Tamron 16-300mm Benchmarking Super Zooms

Tamron 16-300mm Benchmarking Super Zooms
– The NEW 18.9X Super Zoom 16-300mm F/3.5-6.3 DiII VC PZD lens!
– Featuring Guest Reviewers Trisha Lim & Genevieve Tan!

Photography by Vince Tan.

15th June 2014, Singapore – Tamron’s release of the (B016) 16-3oomm F/3.5-6.3 DiII VC PZD lens shocked the industry. Why so? Typically most APS-C DSLR comes with a kit lens that starts from a focal range of “18mm”, which translate into a focal range of 27mm (for most APS-C DSLRs except Canon is about 29mm) on a  full frame 35mm format. This is considered as the “standard wide” angle. Anything below 18mm will be sold as a premium lens as it means wider angle and any mm lesser (wider) is worth paying for.

Tamron recently redefines the industry benchmark with its latest release of the 16-300mm F/3.5-6.3 DiII VC PZD. Starting from an Ultra Wide angle of 16mm to a generous 300mm telephoto range, this super lens effectively gives the user a full frame equivalent of 24-450mm (25.6-480mm on Canon APS-C). In digital language, this is 18.8X Zoom – a first in the industry and a first in the history of photography lenses.

photo
Picture: the New Tamron 16-300mm in both Canon & Nikon mount.

The new 16-300mm lens includes premium aspherical elements plus Tamron decided to add newly developed glass – with multiple layers of coating to produce clear, sharp images while maintaining the overall compact dimensions. If the sweeteners ain’t enough, you will be pleased to know that – to design a real All-in-One lens, the lens had been engineered to do close ups (close to macro) at 1:2.9 (at 39 cm) for the magnification ratio. In the past, most super telephoto zooms suffers from the lack of close minimum focusing distance. This is indeed a challenge that Tamron had geniusly overcome – way ahead of other manufacturers.

DSC_0072
Picture: See how 2mm can make a difference to your photos.

The other sweeties worth mentioning is the company’s proven VC (Vibration Compensation) system which is an image stabilization system that allows more focusing accuracy and the PZD focusing motor (Piezo Drive) which allows blazing fast focusing and at a near total-silence operation. Size wise, the new 16-300mm is not huge (about 10cm long), in fact it is considered compact in my view. The moisture-resistant construction and design of the lens affirms users that the 16-300mm is truly the all-purpose lens for both indoor & outdoor use. The lens build is of excellent & high quality materials, the barrel finish feels expensive and the rubber zoom rings feels good to the touch and the lens zooms and focus smoothly – it actually feels closer to the more premium lens that other brands offers. Tamron fans will also notice that the gold-brass ring on the lens had been replaced with a sophisticated looking tungsten silver ring which exudes a classier feel now.

16mm 35mm 50mm 70mm 100mm 200mm
300mm

It is not “all show” with “no substance” inside the lens. This 7-Blader (aperture) with a  ø67 front filter thread has 16 elements in 12 groups including 3 molded Aspherical elements, 2 LD elements (Low Dispersion) & Tamron’s proven UXR (Ultra-Extra Refractive Index) glass, the 16-300mm means serious business. Aberrations are corrected to a minimum and the company’s MLC (multi-layer coating) cuts CA & flare while letting the user produces high quality images.

As mentioned many times, I would like to remind everyone that this site is not a technical site (which many users in dpreview claimed so 🙂 ), we are more keen to show the real photos produced from the lens or equipment that we reviewed to our readers rather than just share everything technical. So to achieve the “Users’ Reviews” – this round, I decided that instead of me doing the usual stuff, I’ve invited 2 other photographers to take the new Tamron 16-3oomm F/3.5-6.3 DiII VC PZD lens out for a walk.

Let’s check out their photos below.
Note: Please note that Genevieve was issued the 16-300mm with a Canon EOS1200D + her own Canon EOS M adapted to EF Mount and Trisha was issued the 16-300mm with a Nikon D5200.

Both our guest reviewers put the 16-3oomm F/3.5-6.3 DiII VC PZD through its paces and limits. As we can see from the above photos (which is cropped & adjusted for horizon ONLY) shot using the new 16-3oomm F/3.5-6.3 DiII VC PZD, we noted the incredibly sharp photos and the images were contrasty and full of details. Let’s hear what the guests reviewers have to say about this wonder lens.

DSC_0184-2

Genevieve Tan: I was very impressed with the all-in-one capabilities built into this lens. The lens is light and its pretty easy to carry around. As for the image quality, I have no complaint at all as I am getting sharp and nice photos even when I zoomed to the 300mm end. The close focusing distance is another bonus if I decide to shoot something small and relatively near, this lens is able to produce what I envision, in almost every possible situation. It’s a solid lens.

DSC_0157-2

Trisha Lim: Similar to Genevieve, I like the lens as it is very light and compact. The lens build was of very high quality and it feels nothing near to the older Tamrons – only better. I like the focusing speed which is very fast and quiet. This set up is good for most travel applications as well as the occasional wildlife photos. The ergonomics of the lens switches layout are sensible and easy to use. Highly recommended for travel photographers to get this lens.

DSC_0145-2

OK everyone, you’ve heard from the ladies. Sounds like a great lens right? So WHO exactly should buy this lens?
The focal range of 16-300mm seems to be targeting travel photographers who wish to bring minimal gears for traveling and that reduces the chances of changing lenses & risking dusts from entering the camera. This lens is also suitable for those who wish to have versatility from the wider than regular kits lenses to a far zoom of 300mm, yet wanted a fast focusing and quiet lens that produces good quality images. Importantly all APS-C users who wish to upgrade their kit lens to more sensible & affordable lens, this is the lens to purchase.

5 Types of Photography Clients from Hell

fired

11th June 2014, Singapore – As a photographer, we all have our shares of meeting crazy people in the industry. Although we have a fair share of insane photographers, more often than not, it is the clients that really makes us wonder if we had made a bad career choice.

===================================

#01 The Stingy-Scheming Client
I am sure all of you had encounter such a client. They will call you, request a quotation, then revert to say that your fees are steep. Then they start questioning you how you came up to that price and what are the things included in the price and they will ask you to justify before asking for another 50% off your quotation.

There was once I received a call from a “huge F&B chain” requesting for a quotation for shooting up their new menu. After I worked out the sums, I sent the proposal over and almost immediately, I received a call from the marketing person who requested the quotation. As expected, I got questioned like what do I meant by “Setting Up”, “Studio Lights” and “Food Make-Up” – after I explained everything, she asked for a discount.

just-say-no

Since she claimed that she was introduced to me by one of my student, I gave her a 15% off my fees but she still complained that I am expensive. Not wanting to lose the business, we both agreed at a final discount of 25%. So the day came, after I set up my equipment, the client came to my working table and ask me if I can reduce my fees further by another 10%. I kept my composure although I am exploding with anger inside me, I had spent time transporting my mobile studio to the restaurant, I had spent close to an hour to set up all the studio lights and table setting and here, the client is asking for another 10% off (means total 35% off). Reluctantly, I told the client this is not right but since I am here, I will do it.

After shooting like 2 hours, the client came to me to inform me that their management can only pay me if I can lower my fees by another 5%. I calmly told the client to come closer to my camera so that I can show my LCD screen to the client. I demonstrated what the “FORMAT” button can do. I packed my things and left. I didn’t get my payment of course, and the client didn’t get the photos too.

===================================

#02 The Fault-Picker Client
This is the type of client that most of us avoided like plague. Everything seems alright & smooth from the quotation stage till the final execution. However, the fault-picker will strike when your photos are submitted. Alicia 32, a professional events photographer recently met such a client. Before the event, she had even asked the client to email her the event brief and she had read through every details and taking note of the series of events that were going to take place. She even noted the VIPs, sequence of events and time flow. When she showed up at the event, she even went to the client and checked if there was anything else that she needs to take note of. After that, Alicia went on auto-pilot like any other event photographers.

After the event ended, she edited the photos and sent to the client. Then Alicia received a call from the client and complaining that her photos were terrible. The client further insulted that her photography standard & skill were not worth what they paid for. Client went on to complain that the photos were too dark, angles were shot wrongly, and even claimed that Alicia had missed out on the important things like some fringe activities that were going on at the same time. The client claimed that their company wasn’t happy and felt that Alicia had not done her job well. In short, every possible fault was picked by the client.

Alicia explained to the client that those fringe activities were not stated in the brief and she was not informed at the scene by the client. Further to that, those photo comments about her work were subjective and very personal. But the client turned nasty and threatened to publicize her bad experience with Alicia’s service. Photography being a reputation business, Alicia (painfully) decided that her reputation is not worth tarnishing for the fees that she had charged so she decided to refund the payment in full.

Bad-Clietns-924x1024

Hilarion Goh, a professional photographer also had a similar experience. He had done a shoot which his client rushed him for the photos. He rendered express service at his own expenses and delivered the photos in double quick time. But the client started finding fault claiming that Hilarion was not following their art direction and the photos was not exactly what they wanted. But soon, it was clear that, what this client wanted was to get a huge discount or even get away with a free photo shoot.

Hilarion decided not to give in to their claims and after all the exchanges, the client refused to pay him and worse, they took his ideas and engaged a cheaper photographer to do the same job. And the photos turned out to be very similar to what Hilarion had initially shot. Hilarion further advised all photographers not to submit your assignment to your client until payment is received – urgent or not regardless.

===================================

#03 The Cheap-Negotiator Client

Wilson Wong, professional photographer, also shared with us about his experience about another type of client which we all also hated. These clients are usually nice people who employed the soft approach – but equally irritating. Wilson shared his experience of a client who told him “We really like your photos but you know we can get similar services at half your rate so why don’t you reconsider?”

Nice try indeed, I am sure all of us have heard this too many times.

Abby Chin, a wedding photographer, has met her share of such clients. She met a couple to discuss a wedding shoot last year and after presenting her portfolio to the couple, the couple asked her “Your photos were awesome, but we are sure there are many photographers like you who charge a much lower price, can you give us more discounts?” Abby smiled at the couple and passed the couple a string which she carries in her bag. The puzzled couple asked her what was the string for – which Abby calmly replied “fly kite”.

Well, a good note to learn from Abby, we should all carry some strings with us when we meet clients.

Personally, I had encountered such a client. Below is the un-edited email message sent to me by this client.

“Dear Allan,
Thank you for your quotation. We have heard about you from many sources and we are very sure that we are engaging the right person for this assignment. Looking at your portfolio, your works are everywhere from buses to menu cards and we are very impressed by your standard. Looking at your quotation which is very reasonable for a 4 hour event, my company can certainly pay you your fees. But we are at the situation where most of our budget had gone into the event planning and we are left with a humble sum of $250.00 and we hope you will kindly consider taking up this offer.”

For those who are reading this, my initial quote was $2500.00.
I followed up with this client as below.

“Dear Client,
Thank you for the nice words and sweet encouragements. I am sure you have spent a big part of your event budget planning on an awesome and unforgettable event. I am very certain that your can surely pay my fees too. However, I am in the situation where I have quoted you in all fairness and meeting your requirements – but $250 is not something that you even offer to a photographer. May I interest you to let my photography students do the job instead? They just graduated from my Basic Photography Class and I am sure they will appreciate the exposure that you will be giving them. I will split your $250 equally among the 5 senior citizens, how about that?”

===================================

#04 The Photo-Magician Client
Photoshop and many other photo-editing software can do wonders to a photo. But one thing that all photographers knows is editing can never make a blur photo sharp neither it can make an ugly person beautiful. Wilson Wong shared that he encountered clients that asked him if he can Photoshop “in such a way that the subject can turn around”. In case you are lost, what Wilson’s client meant was – you shoot a person from the back, then use Photoshop to make the person turn around and face the camera. Atrocious right? Another of his client said this “I heard Photoshop can do miracles…can you do one for me?” which, from what we understand, Wilson was lost for words.

Abby told me that another of her client emailed a blur photo to her and offered her $500 to make the photo sharp. She tried explaining to the client that technically it is not possible to which her client retorted “Photoshop can do anything”. Contrary to popular beliefs, that is really not possible.

f

I had a client who refused to pay my fees and went on to do a company event shoot by himself with a DSLR. After the event, he called and asked me how much I usually charge for editing photos. Out of courtesy, I told him that I will only edit my own photos – no matter how he begged me. You all know why? This “genius” shot the whole company event in Black & White as he does not knows how to switch back to color mode. Apparently this fool had went around & show off his camera at the event and someone – possibly a colleague – had fumbled with the menu controls and passed the camera back to him without telling him.

Then he presumed that by shooting in Black & White, I have the ability to Photoshop back the original colors – I know most of you are laughing now – so am I.

===================================

#05 The Gear Head Client
With more & more people dabbling into photography these days, many people out there owns a DSLR with a couple of lenses and who seems to know a lot about photography equipment. Wilson has a client who asked why isn’t him shooting with a Leica while Alicia has a client who insisted she use a Canon DSLR instead of a Nikon to shoot her party. Does the brand matters? I am sure 9,999,999 photographers out there will tell you skill & perspective is above the brand of the camera, but then again, we have clients who knew “a little too much” & started to pass amateurish judgmental views on the equipment we use.

In fact, the silliest question that a client will ask you during a pre-shoot discussion will be “Which brand of camera do you use?”. Does it even mean anything at all? When client asked me this, usually I will ask back “Which brand do you prefer? I have everything”. (Disclaimer: Not showing off here but I maintain a few systems due to my photography classes).

===================================

In brief;-

There are certainly more types of “Clients from Hell” out there – many which are equally irritating, rude, scheming and even cheat photographers. However, we are lucky (too) that there is the other 50% of clients who are absolutely sweet and awesome. Due to time constraints, we decided to publish the above 5 – being the most common of all cases. Do leave a comments & share with us more below if you have encountered a Client from Hell.

What Goes On Behind-the-Scene for a Gear Review?

What Goes On Behind-the-Scene for a Gear Review?

05th June 2014, Singapore – As a photographer, I am sure many of you would have read equipment reviews all over the internet. While some of you read reviews before a purchase decision, there are some who are wondering how reviews are done and what exactly went on behind the scene. Most photography review sites has their own distinctive style so as to create their niche and we are no exception. Famed for our “user-friendly” reviews with real and unedited photos, and sometimes pushing the equipment to the limits, we are more interested in how the equipment performed and what kind of images it produces rather than how many frames per seconds or how big the aperture is.

From learning about the equipment that we are about to review to planning where to go, what to test and how to test the equipment correctly are vital as it will affect the overall presentation of the article which the world will somehow find their way to it. Not to forget the weather plays an important part too if the review is to be conducted outdoor.

So complicated? Actually it is and it is also not.

MINOX DCC 5.1 The “Digital M3”

Photo: Tour participants at Sekinchan, Malaysia trying out & posing with the MINOX DCC 5.1

04th June 2014, Singapore – Following the recent announcements about Ourshutterjourney LLP’s appointment as the exclusive wholesaler of MINOX Digital Miniature Cameras by Schmidt Marketing (Singapore) Pte Ltd, many people asked if the little MINOX can even function or perform like a camera at all. Well, MINOX Miniatures are REAL cameras, just that these are licensed replicas to the likes of Leica M3 or the Rolleiflex TLR. You can check out the specs over here.

Since pictures says a thousand words, we decided to pass a demo unit of the MINOX DCC 5.1 – the Leica M3 replica – to one of our partner Xing Asia to use & test out the camera. So last week, Xing Asia brought a group to Sekinchan in West Malaysia for a photography tour and the little MINOX was passed around to everyone in the group to use and resulted in the photo set below. Nevermind who shot which photos, it’s a collective effort from everyone in the tour group.

My beautiful picture My beautiful picture My beautiful picture My beautiful picture My beautiful picture My beautiful picture My beautiful picture My beautiful picture

From the photos, I am sure many of you will be convinced by now that the MINOX DCC 5.1 is not just a toy replica, it’s a real & fully functional digital camera that despite being small, it works & its performance does not disappoints.
Best of all, the “C” in the product code “DCC” actually means CLASSIC. And the full code says “Digital Classic Camera”. Understand now? 🙂

Thank you Xing Asia for helping us to review the MINOX!

For the rest of you, so where to buy?
Here.

Till we return with the review on the mini Rolleiflex, meantime just pop over to our FB Page and “LIKE” the page!
