Photographers Who Undercharged Others.

Hunger

To the REAL Professional Photographers:
Dear Brothers & Sisters, Sell your Standards and not your services. A Price war will not
do us any good or help the photography industry in any way. Our unique styles makes us
successful, our individual perspectives are loved by our customers so that they are willing
to pay us our fees. Each of us has bills to pay, gears to maintain and I know exactly how it
feels when you are 2 pay cheques from to living out on the street. Hang on there everyone.

To the “Professional” Photographers:
Dear Friends, it is fun and sometimes cool to make some extra cash with your top-of-the-line
camera & lenses. I am not discouraging you from learning or gaining more experiences by
taking on jobs & assignments, but please charge reasonably. If you are a super good
photographer and charges on $500 for a full day wedding assignment, what would the market
think of the Professional Photographers who charges $2,800 for the same job?

Go Figure everyone.

It Doesn’t Get Any TOUGHer Than This – Olympus TG-1

The Olympus TOUGH series is the company’s range of powerful compacts that are capable of withstanding the elements in the harshest of environment. As the series name “TOUGH” suggested, these cameras are designed for “abuse” as all TOUGH Series (TG) members are waterproof, freeze proof, knock proof & crush proof. At the top of the hierarchy sits theΒ  TG-1, the flagship, the toughest TOUGH by far.

The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS is super rugged, and the lens has the equivalent of 25-100mm (in 35mm format) and useable aperture of F2.0-4.9 – extremely good & sensible specifications for a wide variety of applications. Now, that is not all, the TG goes deeper into the water now and it submerges to 12m (40ft) and you can drop the TG-1 from about a 2 meters height and the camera will not break. And of course, if you decides to keep your TG-1 inside your freezer instead of your dry cabinet, you can do that too as the TG-1 is designed for sub zero temperature – best for snow environment too!

The TG-1 iHS is built around a 1/2.3″-type 12MP back-lit CMOS sensor and a TruePic VI processor to make the most of its output. With a camera like this, we wouldn’t want to review this camera in Singapore, instead, we decided that the TG-1 should go places – and it landed in China. Our travel Editor, Yu Ling were given the task of reviewing the Olympus TG-1 and put the camera through its paces. Yu Ling took the “Ancient Tea Horse Trail” (Lijiang to Shangri-la) 3300m above sea level, a windy, dusty, freezing cold ( -7 degrees) route that will put the TG-1’s capability to the test.

The Olympus TG-1 Experience: From Yu Ling
I find the Olympus TG-1 to be extremely reliable. It gives me certain edge over my DSLR as the zoom range of the TG-1 allows me lots of creativity uses and without having the need to change lenses. Li Jiang is very dusty with lots of fine sands in the air, I cannot imagine changing lenses often and having sands in my camera body.Β  The battery life lasted longer than I expected, cold temperature are the greatest enemy of battery, surprisingly the supplied battery lasted well way beyond my expectations. Color rendering is superb for a compact, all the photos here are un-edited except slight cropping and straightening, apart from that, what you see is what you get (i got). The sheer compact size, solid built TG-1 are really made for these things, for the worst of shooting conditions.

This is the first time that I will want to have this little cam in my camera bag whenever I go traveling again.

What I Like:
– Compact & Light (Compared to my DSLRs)
– Solid Build (can take real abuse)
– Nice Colors.
– ISO Handling is decent.
– Battery life.
– Ergonomics.
– Good useable focal range.
– Like the Super Macro Mode
– Nice Creative Filters (Cuisine Mode & Landscape Mode)

What I Dislike:
– Wider end of the focal range can be improved. Wider please.
– No Manual Model (Full control of Shutter Speed & Aperture)

Olympus E-PL5, the “Wonder Cam” (Featuring Edward Tian & Julian Tan)

The Olympus Pen E-PL5. Photo by Julian Tan.

Whilst the world are raving (& comparing) about the specifications of Olympus’s latest Pen, the M4/3 E-PL5,
I wanted to see real photos from real photographers and not looking at specifications or “File” photos.
I managed to laid my hands on the E-PL5 – courtesy of Olympus Imaging Singapore, but due to the recent busier
schedule with the season peaking with more assignments, I decided to approach two friends to help me out.

They are none other than Edward Tian (better known as Edward Adios) & Julian Tan who are both well articulated in various genres of photography. (Do a search on them on google and you will know what this pair of friends are capable of.) So I met up with both of them, passed them the E-PL5, and told them “use this to do what you usually do. send me some photos taken from this cam in 2 weeks.”Β  I waited in anticipation, and 2 weeks later, ………………….
(See Commentaries after the Photo Spread).

Works of Edward Tian (Edward Adios) using the Olympus E-PL5.

Enjoyed looking & Amazed by Edward’s works?
I sure do! Let’s see what Julian had returned with.

I am sure all of you will agree with me that the above works submitted by Edward Tian & Julian Tan are Excellent Pieces.

Looking at their photos, I am sure they put the E-PL5 through its pace and they certainly enjoyed the E-PL5.
However, nothing is perfect, here’s the Pros & Cons – as reported by the 2 photographers.

Words from Edward Tian

Picture: Edward Tian (Edward Adios)

The PROs:
– Good size & grip (*with the supplied grip attached)
– Easy to use dials
– In-camera HDR bracketing function
– Art & Scene filters
– i-Auto function really takes the pain off everything and produces quite good image

The CONs:
– WB can be a little unpredictable.
– Supplied lens not of good quality
– Short Battery life

Words from Julia Tan

Picture: Julian Tan

The PROs:
– Small and Compact.
– Very good for landscape photography
– Works well with 4/3 ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses.
– Very advanced Bracketing functions.
– iAuto works very well.
– Decent all-round kit lens
– Silent shutter
– Appeal to the ladies
– Touch-screen Functionality
– Fun Art Filters

The CONs:
– Auto white balance not as accurate as OM-D EM-5
– Low-Res rear LCD screen. (An issue when focusing in the dark, WB too orange)
– Grip not comfortable
– Kit lens does not have good macro magnification

———————————————————————————————————-
I hope everyone had a visual feast, the photos produced by the Olympus Pen E-PL5 by Edward Tian
& Julian Tan are of exceptional good quality. So it’s not the camera, it’s the person using it that really matters.

Note:
For the full specifications of the Olympus PEN E-PL5, please visit your local Olympus Imaging Website for more details and retail information.

Olympus OM-D EM-5 vs OM-D EM-5 Featuring Chester Chen

Two Photographers, Two OM-Ds, Two Visions.

Picture: Chester Chen (Left) & Allan Lee, Editor (Right) with their OM-Ds.

A beautiful embodiment of the β€œbest” of Olympus, the OM-D EM-5 is a new class of cameras on its own. Contrary to popular beliefs, the OM-D is not a continuation of the OM line (35mm SLR) which once rules the classic SLR world. The OM-D is a Micro Four Thirds, running alongside with the Pen Series, but targeting at a different crowd I would say. In my view, the Pen Series are great cameras targeting at the younger crowd who are trendy and artsy, but when OM-D was announced, I see it as a M43 for the serious enthusiasts. Why? The specs is so near to the Olympus Four Third Flagship E-5, its not too difficult to see it that the OM-D was made for bigger things.

When I received the review unit (pictured above) from Olympus Singapore, I was at a lost on how to review it. Given my style, I will not compare it with other maker’s M43 as each brand has its own following and selling points, but the OM-D is a different breed altogether. So after some careful consideration & planning, I decided to roped in another Professional Photographer to do a dual review, he is none other than Chester Chen, a renowned Professional Photographer in the local imaging circle – and he owns an OM-D too.

Picture: Blending into the crowd – Allan, Editor (Left) & Chester Chen (Right)

The planned review goes like this. We go out together, with our OM-Ds in our hands, to a single location and shoot using our own style – well that should be fun – especially with what we might produce as both of us are very different photographers. We ended up at Little India, most appropriately at this time of the year as Deepavali (The Festival of Lights) is around the corner. The theme? Street Photography.
Here’s what we got. (Commentaries after the photo spread)

Picture: “Gathered” by Allan Lee (Editor).

“Gathered” – Hordes of people gathered together having their little conversations & sharing of stories over
beer & snacks, this is a true gathering. Done with my own method of stitching for pano shots. – Allan Lee

Picture L-R: “Deepavali” & “HungryGoHere” by Chester Chen.

“Deepavali” (Above) & “Lightup” (2 jumps Below) – It quickly became dark and the celebratory decorations took to lighting up the street. – Chester
“HungryGoHere” – Some businesses who started working very early in the day were still at it whilst other more interested in the evening pub crawling patrons started to get customers and what better way than a real-life display of the dishes. – Chester

Picture L-R: “Coco-Licious” & “Color Order” by Allan Lee (Editor).

“Coco-Licious” – The coconut seems to be most popular drink at Little India’s Deepavali Bazaar. Every other
person taking a break by the road can be seen with 1 or sometimes 2 coconuts. This is enjoyed over a conversation
before moving off for more shopping. – Allan Lee.
“Color Order” – An Array of colored syrup drinks on sale adding to the atmospheric-ambience colors creating a happy &
refreshing mood. – Allan Lee.

Picture L-R: “Fence” , “GotNews-Paper” & “LeanOnMe” by Chester Chen.

“Fence” – I shot this twice but kept the one where I can see the fence. – Chester.
“LeanOnMe” – The subdued shadows from the indirect natural light caught my eye with this shot. And you can see the subtlety of the blues with the wall and his jeans. Then you get hit by the contrast of the red and white shirt. – Chester.

Picture L-R: “Ground Up” & “Drink Seller” by Allan Lee (Editor).

“Ground Up” – Using the tilt-able LCD screen on the OM-D, it allows me to do low-to-ground shots like these.
I love ground up perspectives. – Allan Lee.

Picture L-R: “Light-Up” & “Mosque & Moon” by Chester Chen.

“Mosque & Moon” – Multiple exposure shots was something I liked to try back in the day. Not many cameras incorporate this feature. The OM-D incorporated the feature and even though I love the feature but don’t feel it will give the desired results. – Chester.

Picture: “That Moment in Time” by Allan Lee (Editor).

“That Moment in Time” – Done with a tripod and having the lens zoomed to the telephoto end, I attempted this shot
with a slow shutter with the smallest aperture (F22) at 50mm (100mm). I am like some 20 metres away when I
took this shot. – Allan Lee

Picture L-R: “Toy People” & “Traffic” by Allan Lee (Editor).

Picture: “Rush” by Chester Chen.

β€œRush” – it was like the sea opened up and allowed all to find safe passage. A very slow shutter speed was used but I had with me a mono-pod so the photo came out better than not having the monopod. – Chester.

Picture: “Pandora Window” by Allan Lee (Editor).

Picture: “Triple-Take” by Chester Chen.

β€œTriple-Take” – Look once and curiosity gets the better of you. Why or what made these 3 guys get the exact same shirt and similar trousers. Note this was shot with the Art Bracket feature. – Chester.

Picture: “Stop” by Allan Lee (Editor).

Picture: “Sitting” by Chester Chen.

“Sitting” – I like to shoot my panoramas in portrait mode. This allows me to capture surrounding elements like the buildings because in this shot it allows me to show the scale and mass of the people gathered. You can use the panorama assist mode on the OM-D but I choose to use my own method because it will have to be stitched later in software. – Chester.

Picture: Chester Chen.

Chester: “I have been using the Olympus OM-D E-M5 for some time and the itch that got me interested in micro-fourthirds even longer. In a nutshell, shooting with the electronic viewfinder with manual focus lenses is a godsend. Hence, when I packed my bag for this Olympus shootout inside was a Nikon 28mm f/3.5, Zenit Helios 44M-7 58mm f/2.0, the 14-42 kit and the 40-150mm. Seems like a lot but when compared to my other full-frame setup it is at least half the weight and bulk.”

Picture: Allan Lee (Editor)

Allan: “The Touch Screen Focus is very useful in this instance as it complements the already pretty fast focusing and this ensures that I am ready to take a shot the way I want it within fractions of a second. The compact profile of the OM-D also makes it easier for me to navigate through the crowd without breaking anything. The issue lens 12-50mm (24-100mm) is very useful for this shoot as it allows me to cover a good focal range – just that this lens needs a little getting-used to, otherwise, it’s a pretty decent lens to go with the OM-D. “

Conclusions:
Chester: “The small diminutive size of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 does make it difficult for people with large hands and fingers. The ‘Play’ button in particular is not friendly. Other inconveniences are quickly put aside when you see the quality of the images. My shooting requirements don’t usually call for large prints so I can easily make use of the high ISO up-to 3200.

If you get tired of being Mr Professional shooting raw files in manual mode. The Olympus OM-D E-M5 gives you both options of shooting where you have full control or it can just as easily setup for full auto or semi-auto for a newbie.

The features I like and use regularly.

  • Built-in Image Stabiliser (because it makes using manual focus lenses easier)
  • Sensor (good light sensitivity and clean output up to 1600. With a little work and creativity ISO 3200 is also a good working .
  • Small easy to handle size and weight. It means I can early carry it in one hand on a wrist strap
  • Bracketing – you can bracket ISO, exposure, art filters, etcetera”

Allan: “I must say I am impressed by what the OM-D had produced in this review-outing. The colors are natural and rendered correctly (Auto WB) and there is little effort required handling the little, but solidly built OM-D. Ergonomics are well thought of and buttons are easy to find and access. Probably for my fat fingers, I find some of the button a tad too tiny, but that should not pose a problem to anyone with normal fingers.

I like the tilt-able LCD screen a lot as I am one of those β€œlow to ground” photographers that insists on having a foreground in my photos and this is a very useful feature. During the processing, I found that most of the photos are already nicely saturated (camera were set to Natural/Default for all settings) and all I need to do was to crop a bit and the photo is good to go.

On overall, the OM-D EM-5 is a nicely packaged monster. Everything is nicely sorted, the array of professional functions found in other high end cameras, the options of art filters, the magnesium alloy + weather proof body with touch screen LCD, the high frame per second, better ISO handling and very useable up to ISO 6400 (still clean), the break-neck speed of focusing and face detection, the attractive price and the lure of Zuiko lenses. Every professional photographer should have one OM-D EM-5 in their gear bag as a second camera or as a main camera.

Facebook Stunt for Sigma Lens Gets A Winner!

It all started out innocently as I wanted to find out how many of my peers uses Sigma lenses and their views on it. This is more of a consolidation exercise for information for this site ( for future uses and numbers can be very important.) As the Editor, I tested it out on my personal Facebook Wall. Here below is a screen shot of what I posted.

And when I saw the “LIKES” and Comments pouring in, I decided to test it further. Well reward systems works well in this country,
and I am ready to go all the way at this point and approach Sigma Marketing (Singapore) Pte Ltd for a lens if the below pulls off.

Then…………… my Faceboook Thread got shared over and over and comments flooded the status.

And what happened next is too easy to predict, somehow Sigma Marketing (Singapore) Pte Ltd
came to know about this little “Stunt” that is happening on my wall and they contacted me and told
me that they are keen to be “involved” in this. I made a little announcement here and this stunt went as
far as Australia, Canada, Malaysia & Indonesia as the hits begins to record visitations from these countries
leading to the article. The Site Traffic boomed to a record high of over 1250 hits in a mere 24 hours.

Today, a rep from Sigma Marketing (Singapore) Pte Ltd decided to select a “best comment” and a winner was selected.

This is like an impossible situation or mission at the start, but it ended up well as this
stunt had generated huge responses from existing Sigma users and even potential Sigma users.
It seems like Sigma has a great following after all. And I am glad to report that, my site had
many articles on Sigma Lenses & Cameras and that also adds up to a big traffic statistics being
generated.

L to R: Dr. Freddy Ng (President – Sigma Marketing (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Miss Tan Kim Peng (Prize Winner) & Mr. Allan Lee (Editor – SJS)

Lastly, I would like to Congratulate the Winner, Miss Tan Kim Peng (pictured above) for this Sigma Stunt by me, the crazy Editor for being
selected as the winner for a Brand New Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM lens Courtesy of Sigma Marketing (Singapore) Pte Ltd.

For those who did not win, fear not, who knows, I might be crazy enough to pull off another stunt in the near future?

Stay tuned to this site, Subscribed, RSS Feeds, etc.

The Olympus SZ-31MR Experience Featuring Wong Renhao

When Olympus launched the SZ-30MR, it took the world by surprise with its 24xZoom, being the first of its class in the world of high end digital compacts. But flaws were evident, like a low resolution LCD, bad ISO performance etc. The newly incarnation comes in the form of SZ-31MR. So does the replacement matches up to market standards?

The Editor caught up with one semi-professional photographer Wong Renhao recently and decided to pass the review unit from Olympus Singapore to him for a couple of days.

Photo by Wong Renhao using the SZ-31MR.

Editor: How was the Olympus SZ-31MR?

Wong: Excellent. Totally amazing!

Editor: Tell me more.

Wong: Well, first, the handling is pretty decent as the grip allows me to hold the camera firmly and prevent accidental falls and the layout of the buttons are sensible and easy to reach. I like the LCD screen too. It’s very bright and sharp.

Editor: What about the performance? Would you like to share?

Wong: As a DSLR user, I wouldn’t want to compare but looking at the SZ-31MR from a compact point of view, this little camera produces decent and clean photos. Especially when pushed to ISO1600. Personally I do not recommend pushing the ISO to 3200 though. The digital noise can be a little overbearing.

Photo by Wong Renhao using the SZ-31MR.

Editor: What about the focusing? Fast enough?

Wong: Definitely very fast for a compact!

Editor: Did you play with the video function too?

Wong: I did, but didn’t quite like it, this is personal though, I don’t really do video.

Editor: So what are the Key Pros & Cons of SZ-31MR from your experience?

Wong: Hmmm, let me start from the Pros then. First, I am (still) impressed with the super zoom of 24X, lens quality is excellent, the ability to shoot stills while recording a video and of course the ergonomics for handling. As for the Cons, I hope Olympus can improve on their ISO performance, and maybe use more metal in the next SZ instead of engineered plastic.

Editor: Did you use the Touch Screen function too?

Photo by Wong Renhao using the SZ-31MR.

Wong: I did, very useful especially when I needed a focus point and all I did was touch the area on the screen that I would like to focus and the camera just click. And the famed Super Macro Mode, that is very Olympus and still useful, in fact this is my most favorite function from Olympus compacts.

Editor: How will you use the SZ-31MR to complement your photography lifestyle?

Wong: The SZ-31MR will be excellent for me to carry around when I am not on assignments or when I doing leisure shooting at photography events. The light & compact profile is good for tucking away into my pocket and the super zoom serves a variety of shooting functions and this is simply a β€œno-brainer” compact that I would love to have it with me at most time. I also think that this will be a great cam for street photography.

Editor: Will you buy it? Recommend it to your photography peers?

Wong:Β  Why not? It’s Olympus. J

Editor: Thank you Wong.

Travel Photography – A Pink Journey

Travel in style on your next Photography trip!

Photography need not be boring although almost everything relating to your gear comes in black color.

I am departing for Thailand in 4 days for the 46th time and I have always travel to Thailand with different gears – every time.
This time, I rounded up a list of items that I am gearing up and might be of interest to you. Everything in Pink.

Camera: Pentax K-R Pink.

Pentax is famed for their bright and cheerful offerings for the K-2000/K-X/K-R range of DSLRs.
Light weight, compact and packed with semi-pro functions, all in a colorful shade of pink (and other colors),
This is the camera to bring to match your clothes and match the number 1 favourite color of the land of smiles.
Available on: www.ebay.com

Lens: Pentax DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6mm Kit Lens (Pink)

The matching colored Pentax kit lens that came with the body. At 18-55mm, it has the equivalent
focal range of 27mm to 82mm (in 35mm format.) which cover the essential wide angel for landscape & scenary to
the portrait range of 80mm best for street photography.
Available at: www.ebay.com

Flash: Holga 15B (Pink)

The Holga Flash is essentially a repainted Vivitar 150 Flash. Made for Film Rangefinders in the 1980s,
these units are obsolete as newer flash equipped with TTL functions replaces old manual ones. Holga
repainted these Vivitars to match the colorful range of Holga film toy cameras and well guys, it works
on DSLRs too. (Except Sony Alpha)
Available at: www.ebay.com.hk

Camera Bag: Golla ESTYLE (Pink)

With a Pink DSLR, Pink Lens & Pink Flash, a Pink Camera Bag completes the package.
The Golla ESTYLE comes in various colors and obviously I picked the pink one over here.
Featuring a 2 slot compartment, this bag is cool for 01 x camera with lens +01 lens + 01 flash.
Available at: www.sgcamerastore.com

A Lens Pouch: Keva Pink

This is actually a small camera bag for smaller compacts and digital cameras.
A quick peek inside reveals that this bag is suitable to double up as a lens pouch or an
accessories pouch to pair up the main camera bag. Since it’s pink, I pick it for both its
color & usefulness.
Available at: www.sgcamerastore.com

Batteries: Sanyo Eneloop (Baby Pink) & XXX Brand (Hot pink)
Now rechargeable batteries comes in various shades of pinks too.
Here we have a Sanyo Eneloop pack in Baby Pink and a “X” Brand in Hot Pink.
Always bring extra power especially during travel. Remember to pack your charger though.
Available at www.eneloop.com.sg (for sanyo)

Camera Strap: GOTO (Pink)

Goto produces tons of retro-style camera straps and accessories.
This leather strap is recently released in a mean hot pink. Well, it’s just perfect for
the pink camera & lens. Don’t youΒ think so?
Available at www.ebay.com.hk

Camera Gear: Triopo Carbon Fibre Travel Tripo (Pink)

Travelling light is common sense. Having a tripod that is tough, light and attractive
is a hard combination, but Triopo has the answer. A full carbon fibre tripod that
is reversed-folded for a smaller profile, super light and it comes in various shades
of metallic colors! It can converted into a monopod, a walking stick, and a low to
ground tripod in seconds.Β It is obvious I’ve gotten the Pink version here!
Available at www.sgcamerastore.com

Outdoor Gear: Pink Disney UmbrellaΒ
Since Thailand is either raining or sunny, it helps to have mobile shelter in the form of an umbrella
inside your camera bag. Just to complete the Pink Mission, I picked the Disney “Minnie” version, in
pink of course.
Available at: www.amazon.com

Outdoor Gear: Iconic Wet Bag (Pink)

Acting as a spare bag for the extra shopping or simply a bag that carries all your wet gear, this is an
unfold-when-needed bag that is useful and practical. When not in use, it can be easily tucked away
without compromising space in your luggage. You can even tug this inside your camera bag too!
Available at: www.qoo10.sg (previously known as GMarket)

Outdoor Gear: KOR Aura Water Bottle (Pink)

Water may not be available everywhere, anywhere, especially during travel and transiting
from provinces to provinces. So it is sensible to have drinking water with you wherever
you go. Now drink in style, in pink.
Available at www.korwater.com

Outdoor Gear: OFF Insect Repellent (Pink Top)

Travelling to Thailand, one can expect to find as many mosquitoes as you can find Taxis.
Bring along insect repellent spray like OFF will be a smart move. Be it in the city or out
in the rural province, this is insurance against many insects and the dreaded dengue fever.
Available at: www.amazon.com (or your friendly MaMak Shop)

Outdoor Gear: Foldable Fan (Pink)

Camera bags are as great when you have a foldable fan in it. In the super hot & humid climate of
Thailand,Β  a fan is very useful for instant gratification when You need a whiff of breeze, to cool off and
only possible when you have a foldable fan like this. I have it in Peranakan style, in Pink. πŸ™‚
Available at: Jonker Street, Malacca, Malaysia.

Outdoor Gear: iPhone Cover (Pink)

A Metal iPhone Cover in metallic Pink brings protectionΒ to your dearest apple in a stylish
pink and yet tough enough to withstand knocks from hawkers & taxi drivers who tries to
elbow you into their taxis. NeedΒ say more?
Available at http://www.ebay.com.hk

TravelΒ Gear: iPhone Charging & Date Cable (Pink)

OK,Β  this is insane as it gets. A hot pink iphone charging charging cable, to match the rest of the pink gear
as above. Well, this is not just a pink decor, it works like the white version that charges your iPhones and
transfers datas, just that it is Pink.

Travel Gear: Pink Hard Case Luggage Bag (X Brand)

Get one that is hard, study, expandable and can allows you to place your tripod inside for
airport check-ins. This one that I gotten allows 2 stage expansion and the size is just right
for my travel tripod with lots of spaces for personal effects and belongings.
Available at: Boon Lay Shopping Centre or Mustafa.

So am I ready for my 46th visit toΒ Thailand? I think I am. πŸ™‚

Olympus SZ-14 – The Sexy Super Zoom

The “SZ” in the Olympus’s SZ Series simply means “Super Zoom”. Living up to its claim, the SZ-14 boast a hefty zoom of 25-600mm (35mm Format equivalent). That is like having a modest wide angle lens through the focal range to a super tele-photo range in a super compact body, with built in Image Stabilization (IS) and packed with an array of filters (creative art filters) to allow creativity to be unleash even without the presence of a manual mode.

Too good to be true? Looking at the specifications sent to me by Olympus Singapore, it suggested a basic, no-frills travel camera. Well, to have a feel of how users from different categories will rate this camera, I rounded up a few photographers from different walks of life for a little “ground check” instead of me doing the review (again). I have been noted recently that I am very “pro-Olympus” these days ignoring releases from Nikon, Canon, Pentax & Sony. Well, to be really fair this time, I have to say, whenever a new camera is launched from Nikon, Canon, Pentax & Sony, even before I can get my hands on a review unit, many “reviews” would have been up and circulating – so there isn’t much need for me to write about these cameras/ lenses based on press releases – as I would rather do a run with them and post up my feedbacks. Wouldn’t you agree with me? πŸ™‚

So back to Olympus, and the SZ-14, so what users from different segment of the market have to say about the SZ-14?

Sheladina Joseph – Travel Photographer.

Editor: So how do you find the Olympus SZ-14?

Sheladina: I find the grip on the SZ-14 to be extremely well-thought off. Most compacts of this range are flat bodied and runs the risk of losing the camera to an unexpected fall. The design is friendly to most travelers and the weight is a bonus. I also find the longer zoom range to be extra useful especially when doing street photography during my travel. To capture street scenes without having to use large DSLR bodies & long lenses – which can be intimidating in certain countries that I travels to. So it is at times like this, a compact like the SZ-14 will be very very useful.

Tan Yoke Ling (Yu Ling) – Professional Photographer.

Editor: So how do you find the Olympus SZ-14?

Yu Ling: I find the colours to be comparable to some DSLRs. Rich and constrasty and the high resolution LCD does makes viewing images satisfying too. The SZ-14 will be a good addition to fellow professionals’ camera bags. It can be used as a back up when “everything fails” too. In the photography business, anything can happen when one least expected it, having the little SZ-14 in my gear bag will add as “insurance”. When I am not on assignment, the SZ-14 can be my carry-around camera too – for leisure or snapshots. The creative filters are fun to use too. πŸ™‚

Julia Chen – Photography Hobbyist & Enthusiast.

Editor: So how do you find the Olympus SZ-14?

Julia: This is a pretty basic camera. But it also promises lots of fun with its good focal range (25mm-600mm) and its creative offerings (Art Filters). This camera is light and compact and I can carry it with me anywhere I want, be it local or overseas. On days that I wish to give my DSLRs a break, the SZ-14 will be the perfect choice to bring it with me.
I like the “Super Macro” function a lot as it has the ability to get up (real) close to nature subjects will even shame some of the higher end prosumer compacts. And I love the sharpness of the photos from the SZ-14!

Editor: So how do you find the Olympus SZ-14?

Hazel: I am very new to photography having picked up the interest about a year ago. I uses a DSLR and I have learn to rely on its advanced functions. The SZ-14 opens up yet another possibility for my learning curve as when I am not on “technical Mode”, I would want a camera that can allow me to concentrate on framing my photos and work on composition. The SZ-14’s “idiot-proof” package is perfect for such needs. And I would also like to add that the layout is simple and easy to find what I need, the creative filters that allows me more room for creative work as well as the compact and light package that I can carry it wherever I go and I can shoot whenever I want.
